My family was visiting nearby Blue Mountain for a ski trip and wanted some sushi after skiing. I checked on Yelp and found this restaurant. It's quaint and cute. Has dim lighting in the dining area with upstairs and downstairs seating. There seemed to be regulars here. Everything started off well, we ordered a tempura appetizer that was pretty good with light batter. Sadly that was the extent of the good experience. After receiving the appetizer it took about 40 minutes to receive our main course sushi entrees. Aside from an apology there wasn't anything offered or comped for the long wait. All the sushi entrees we ordered were mediocre sadly. The quality of fish wasn't high. Unfortunately this is one of the few sushi restaurants in the area so I think that's why it has higher reviews. Service was just okay too. Based on this and the sushi quality I wouldn't recommend. read more

Not sure how this place has 4 stars honestly. The place itself is a converted old house, so it is very cozy on the inside. The parking can get busy since most people come here in groups from the beaches or Blue Mountain, so plan ahead. We came early so we got a spot no problem. Vegetable gyoza was pretty standard, its fried well. The ippai combo did not seem to have fresh salmon or tuna. Some of the other white fishes were great but the salmon and tuna, including the spicy salmon roll was not to my standard from what I see in Toronto. The udon soup was tasty, but not a lot of ingredients. The cabbage and carrot are barely boiled soft, and the chicken looks like its from frozen, just thrown in. We didnt have a soy sauce bottle on our table so I looked around to see if I could grab one from an empty table- the one next to ours had fruit flies surrounding the bottle..... there were also fruit flies I had to constantly swat away during our meal. On the plus side, the servers were nice and attentive. And the prices are cheap compared to the Village. Overall wouldn't come here again and wouldn't recommend anyone going either. read more

Was in the area for work and decided to give The Hungry Sumo a try based on the reviews. Arrived before the dinner hour and as such the restaurant was sparsely seated. The wait staff was very helpful in choosing my selections and worked with me on a particular aversion I have to Escolar (Butterfish). Ordered the 13 pc chef's selection sashimi and a premium dynamite roll. Both selections were quite good and well presented. Price point is in line with other a-la-carte sushi restaurants and as I'm a big fan of sashimi I have to curb my appetite :-) read more

We were in search for Japanese food while visiting Blue Mountain. The Hungry Sumo was about at 10 mins drive from the resort. The restaurant is actually in a house. Pretty unique. A bit old and run down and not as modern but it's clean enough. Parking was tough when we got there someone left but not a lot of parking spots in the back. There was 12 of us so they gave us a private room in the upper floor of this house. Note there's a 18% gratuity charge automatically when it's 10 guests or more. I gave this restaurant a 3 stars since some of the dishes were bit that great but a couple they were good. There were a few dishes to definitely avoid. The assortment of tempura is great, fresh and crispy. But when we ordered a second order of just shrimp tempura which was more expensive the shrimps came out so small. Not worth it. Stick with the assorted tempura. The sushi boat for $69 was not worth it. The portion was small. The yaki udon chicken was ok. The portion was small for $23!! With small pieces is chicken. The teriyaki steak was the worst dish, do not get this dish. It was like a stir fry sliced beef as per picture attached. It was NOT steak and for $25?? Not worth the price. The gyoza and age dashi tofu were good. I think only the fried items came out decent. I think the food was overpriced and not the best quality. I will probably not come back. read more

Surprised how busy it was on a Wednesday night at 5:30. Figure it's a good sign. Lucked into this finding on Google. It's a Japanese/Korean combo restaurant. All the basics were delicious- miso soup, salad, sashimi (very fresh). The aburi was surprisingly good. I only like those at Miku but this place gives it a run for the money. They even have albacore tuna and taste fresh and amazing. The restaurant is in a small house on the main street so not too many tables. The stuff is super friendly. They are short handed but very pleasant and even apologized in a advance. The rest of the main meal we ordered Korean dishes. Done to perfection. "I had the pleasure of dining at the Hungry Sumo in Collingwood and it was a wonderful experience. The restaurant had a cozy feel to it, with enough tables to entertain a good crowd without feeling overcrowded. It looks like an old converted home, which adds to the cozy atmosphere. The staff were professional and courteous, which added to the overall experience. The upstairs washroom was also a nice touch, as it provided a bit of privacy away from the hustle and bustle of the main dining area. I highly recommend the Hungry Sumo. I was visiting family in Collingwood and we decided on this place. It's in a converted older house, so very cool to start with. The staff was friendly and sat us quickly even though we had no reservations. We ordered soups, salads and different rolls. Coming from Los Angeles where there is good sushi places on what seems like every corner - This place was delicious!!!! I mean, spot on. Fresh fish and just really tasted good. So good in fact we came back the very same week! As we enjoyed our food a couple next to us started complaining because from what I could understand- the chef didn't make the sushi like they did where they came from - I think he said somewhere in the US. He proceeded to explain to the server how it should be made!!! LMAO!! Like 'bro, really?' The chef was kind enough to make him a roll like he imagined it should be...but this guy should be embarrassed- how you gonna come into a restaurant and tell the chef how he or she should make their food??? All the servers and the manager were kind of scrambling to ensure he enjoyed his experience but in the end the guy was just a dummy. Very mediocre sushi but I guess sushi standards are a bit lower when you're out of GTA. Rice was cold and a bit dry, the nigiri sushi was on the smaller side. You know those places that cheap out on the fish but give you lots of rice? Well here they don't give you that much rice either and the fish was on the thin side. The rolls were also cut very unevenly (some pieces were larger than others). The avocado (in the dynamite roll) also felt unripe. Prices aren't cheap too for the quality of food you're getting. We always pop by this place when we're in town visiting family and really enjoy their house salad, the spinach gomaae, the tempura, inari rice pouches, vegetarian roll and the Maki Set combo. If you're in Collingwood this place is a must! Tip: If you're in a rush, maybe try something else. This place is intimate and it's sushi so it's all handmade to order. Solid 3.5 from me. We were in the area on Valentine's Day and came here because of the highly complimentary reviews. I like the design of the restaurant, the interior feels like a cozy and welcoming home. The servers are very attentive and present. However, the food could've been better. We ordered the Sunomono salad, age dash tofu, Japanese style fried rice w/ chicken, and the seafood yaki udon. The Sunomono salad was ok but had less than I was expecting for a nearly $10 salad.The sauce the age dash tofu came with was like a bland dark soy sauce(that they call tempura sauce) which didn't suit the tofu as much as the thick sweet and savory sauce I was accustomed to. The Japanese style fried rice tasted ok but barely had any chicken and wasn't salty enough for me. I added some soy sauce, but I was disappointed it was dark soy sauce instead of the light seafood soy sauce I was used to in Japanese restaurants. Meanwhile, my boyfriend's seafood yaki udon was too salty for him, so my solution was to mix my fried rice in his udon sauce. Overall, great decor, service, and plating. Excellent service and food! The Japanese - Korean fusion has a lot of great food choices. We ordered sushi and Bento box and we were pleasantly impressed with the presentation and especially the taste of the food. Our palate were completely satisfied. Sushi was very fresh and was freshly prepared and the UNAGI BBQ was the bomb!!! We ordered more of those. The server was very nice and pleasant and they accommodated a party of 11 when I made the reservations on the last minute. Thank you, Hungry Sumo! The 4-star rank goes to the sushi and rolls there. It's very fresh and tasted great! The bulgogi dinner and the bibimbap were not that good (probably we're not quite hungry anymore after the sushi so got more picky). Personally, the bibimbap had too much rice and the veggies/rice ratio was not good. The bulgogi dinner had lots of veggies which was awesome, but it's really oily to me. The taste was not bad, it's just too oily to us. It's a nice restaurant overall! read more

Stopped here for lunch while in Collingwood, and was happy with the nice ambiance, service, and food! I ordered the yaki udon, and they were kind enough to substitute tofu for meat in my dish. The noodles were presented very nicely, and tasted better than many udon dishes I've had elsewhere. The portion size was also huge, and I was pretty full at the end of my meal! Don't go here if you are a Hungry Sumo! Food was small portions spread out thinly on a plate. My seafood yaki udon was okay. Way too many onions, sauce was like runny like soup and having noodles this way was terrible as much of the liquid splashed all over the plate and on my shirt! You get 2 small shrimps, 3 calamari rings and 1 mussel, loads of onions, about 5 slivers of zucchini, 2 slivers of carrots and some udon for $16.95! Ouch! After a rough day of spa-ing at Blue mountain, my friends and I were hungry but we wanted something a little different than the Boston Pizza and Pizzaville's in the area. One of my friend's recommended this place and I'm glad she did. It's a tiny place that FILLS UP QUICK! It's located in a converted house and the parking lot is tiny. Side parking is at an angle and there are a few spots at the back. We ordered a variety of items - seaweed salad; aga dashu tofu (deep fried tofu) - this one I was not a fan of - no flavor IMO; couple orders of the butterfish; kamikaze rolls (spicy tuna with tempura bits); spicy crispy BB salmon rolls; the chapche dinner (sweet potato noodles with beef/veggies) and the CJ rolls (deep fried asparagus, cucumber with sprinkles of crunchy potatoes and garlic like sauce). With the exception of the tofu, everything was delicious! I would definitely come back here every time I am up in Collingwood. The food was fresh, the service was fabulous. Stopped by on the way home from blue Mountains. Rave reviews from my friends so we had to check it out. We were greeted instantly by happy and smiley staff and seated right away. The friendliness was common throughout our entire stay. It was definitely a pleasant, happy place. Not knowing if there was an upstairs area, the place is on the smaller side so I'd recommend making reservations if you can. It was nice and decently quiet, not too loud. We ordered a few soups which were good. I got a miso soup which was the exact same miso soup you get at the other 9 million sushi places in Canada. Same goes for the seaweed salad. They all must have the exact same supplier. He must be rolling in the dough! Our rolls were excellent. Tasty and incredibly fresh tasting. The one downside is that they were on the smaller side. I'd call them petite rolls. I definitely, unfortunately left hungry. I guess that would be expected based on their name! Although I'm far from a sumo wrestler. Surprisingly, it was also on the more expensive side too. All in all, I'd come back in a heart beat, since good quality sushi is hard to find but I'm not sure if I'd order more to fill my appetite since it wasn't so wallet friendly. read more

Based off of previous experiences looking for food in "resort/tourist" areas, expectations were running low. So after reading a handful of reviews for The Hungry Sumo, I was hopeful but not convinced that we would be in for a good meal. However, we were happily surprised. Upon entering the house-turned-restaurant, the main floor was bustling with energy and full of customers. After a brief 5 minute wait, we were brought upstairs to a quieter and more private dining area with booth seating. All throughout the night, the wait staff were friendly, funny and very thoughtful. Service was also efficient especially considering we were upstairs away from the main dining room. We had the teriyaki chicken/beef on a sizzling hot plate (it was very obviously sizzling upon arrival). Although the portion size seemed smaller upon first glance, it was fresh and satisfying enough to warrant the price. A previous reviewer mentioned that it was on par with some Japanese restaurants in Toronto and I am inclined to echo the sentiment - expect to spend about $15-$25/pp after tax for your meal here. read more

Came here after a night in blue mountain. It's a nice little restaurant in collingwood. We ordered the dolsot bibimbap, bulgogi and some sushi. I love me some good bibimbap and this was pretty good! The vegetables they put were nicely cooked and the egg on top was perfect! The red pepper sauce was a littlw bland, but I'm also used to a spicier gochujang. The sushi was my favourite! Wish I could give a 0 star! Safety hazard!! Ordered the most expensive sushi combo and was a piece of metal bristle in the salad - if swollen it's guaranteed an ER visit. Complained to the restaurant and after many emails back and forth, they reluctantly agreed to compensate me for a weird number $22.6, while we spent over $140 with tips, as a "good faith" - they implied they didn't fully trust that the metal bristle was there even with the picture! Aka, I could be conning them! Very insulting! You should not use those metal ball to clean your dishes to start with! Huge safety hazard!! Me and my boyfriend were craving for some sushi when we were up in Collingwood during the weekend. The Hungry Sumo was only 1 km away from our hotel so we decided to try it out based on the 2 good reviews on Yelp. The Hungry Sumo is a restaurant in a house....something I've never seen before. Service from the server was pretty decent during our entire stay. However, our orders took a while to arrive. We ordered an order of salmon sashimi, the green dragon roll, the spider roll, and the spicy salmon roll. The salmon sashimi didn't taste fresh and it tasted as if it was in the fridge for a while. The rolls were pretty good though. I've been to so many sushi restaurants in Mississauga that The Hungry Sumo doesn't even stand up to the rest. read more

Tonight was our first, and last, visit to The Hungry Sumo. Celebrating two family birthdays, we had seen the positive reviews and hoped for an evening of good sushi. It's a Sunday night, so there were only 6 or 7 tables occupied. The friendly waiter took our order and brought us our drinks and miso soup. An hour and twenty minutes later, we still hadn't received any food, not even the endamame we'd ordered. Or anything else. When we went and found our waiter, it quickly became apparent that, despite the small number of diners in the restaurant, they'd completely forgotten our order. Not good enough. We left. We ordered takeout on Christmas Eve. Sushi was tasty and plentiful. We also ordered 2 Bulgogi dinners and a spicy chicken dinner. The dinners were disappointing , for $20 it consisted mainly of onions, with a few pieces of protein and a broccoli or two thrown in. When we attempted to speak to the managers about this, we were told that was the portion size. My husband had to go to McDonald's for extra food as he was still hungry ! The only credit they could offer was the 10% gratuity they asked us for. I was shocked at the suggestion ! They refused to do anything else for us. Would not recommend this restaurant . Definitely not recommend to anyone. Not terrible service but not friendly and nice either. I got two dishes, both have chicken, and they both were dry like cardboard, terrible thick sauce that did not stick to the chicken. Miso soup, no onion, no tofu, very bland tasting. Metal chopsticks they gave me, instead of bamboo or wooden chopsticks like other tables. The eggs with veggie was extremely horrible that I couldn't finish it. So simple food and took long time for them to prepare it. I would give zero star if yelp allows. Definitely never come back. read more
