    Premium Dynamite roll
    Ray B.

Was in the area for work and decided to give The Hungry Sumo a try based on the reviews. Arrived before the dinner hour and as such the restaurant was sparsely seated. The wait staff was very helpful in choosing my selections and worked with me on a particular aversion I have to Escolar (Butterfish). Ordered the 13 pc chef's selection sashimi and a premium dynamite roll. Both selections were quite good and well presented. Price point is in line with other a-la-carte sushi restaurants and as I'm a big fan of sashimi I have to curb my appetite :-)

We were in search for Japanese food while visiting Blue Mountain. The Hungry Sumo was about at 10 mins drive from the resort. The restaurant is actually in a house. Pretty unique. A bit old and run down and not as modern but it's clean enough. Parking was tough when we got there someone left but not a lot of parking spots in the back. There was 12 of us so they gave us a private room in the upper floor of this house. Note there's a 18% gratuity charge automatically when it's 10 guests or more. I gave this restaurant a 3 stars since some of the dishes were bit that great but a couple they were good. There were a few dishes to definitely avoid. The assortment of tempura is great, fresh and crispy. But when we ordered a second order of just shrimp tempura which was more expensive the shrimps came out so small. Not worth it. Stick with the assorted tempura. The sushi boat for $69 was not worth it. The portion was small. The yaki udon chicken was ok. The portion was small for $23!! With small pieces is chicken. The teriyaki steak was the worst dish, do not get this dish. It was like a stir fry sliced beef as per picture attached. It was NOT steak and for $25?? Not worth the price. The gyoza and age dashi tofu were good. I think only the fried items came out decent. I think the food was overpriced and not the best quality. I will probably not come back.

We ordered the chicken yaki udon and chicken donburi. Both were tasty however the chicken was overcooked and dry on both dishes. However, the other ingredients and sauce were good. The restaurant is clean and is in a house. Service was friendly. Price is a bit higher than average but that was expected for a touristy place. Free parking behind the restaurant.

Surprised how busy it was on a Wednesday night at 5:30. Figure it's a good sign. Lucked into this finding on Google. It's a Japanese/Korean combo restaurant. All the basics were delicious- miso soup, salad, sashimi (very fresh). The aburi was surprisingly good. I only like those at Miku but this place gives it a run for the money. They even have albacore tuna and taste fresh and amazing. The restaurant is in a small house on the main street so not too many tables. The stuff is super friendly. They are short handed but very pleasant and even apologized in a advance. The rest of the main meal we ordered Korean dishes. Done to perfection. We came back one more time as we were heading out to go home. Thanks chef!

"I had the pleasure of dining at the Hungry Sumo in Collingwood and it was a wonderful experience. The restaurant had a cozy feel to it, with enough tables to entertain a good crowd without feeling overcrowded. It looks like an old converted home, which adds to the cozy atmosphere. The staff were professional and courteous, which added to the overall experience. The upstairs washroom was also a nice touch, as it provided a bit of privacy away from the hustle and bustle of the main dining area. I highly recommend the Hungry Sumo. It's a great spot for a night out with friends or a romantic dinner for two. The cozy atmosphere, great food, and friendly staff make it a top-notch dining destination in Collingwood. Today since it was Mother's Day they included a free desert for all the mothers in the restaurant, was delicious

Fresh sashimi. Ton options for rolls. Also a few Korean cuisine and they looked pretty good. It was more of fusion bar style ambiance but dish was authentic. Staffs are super friendly! Patio area in the back and parking spaces.

The only picture I took! Too hungry! Small house salad up close and spinach gomaae in the background.

This place is so cute and the staff are super friendly. Great for a bite after skiing or any time really. We always pop by this place when we're in town visiting family and really enjoy their house salad, the spinach gomaae, the tempura, inari rice pouches, vegetarian roll and the Maki Set combo. If you're in Collingwood this place is a must! Tip: If you're in a rush, maybe try something else. This place is intimate and it's sushi so it's all handmade to order. Translation--it can be a bit slow sometimes when they're busy. The food is still worth it though!!

Japanese Style Fried Rice w/ chicken (but not much of it)

Solid 3.5 from me. We were in the area on Valentine's Day and came here because of the highly complimentary reviews. I like the design of the restaurant, the interior feels like a cozy and welcoming home. The servers are very attentive and present. However, the food could've been better. We ordered the Sunomono salad, age dash tofu, Japanese style fried rice w/ chicken, and the seafood yaki udon. The Sunomono salad was ok but had less than I was expecting for a nearly $10 salad. The sauce the age dash tofu came with was like a bland dark soy sauce(that they call tempura sauce) which didn't suit the tofu as much as the thick sweet and savory sauce I was accustomed to. The Japanese style fried rice tasted ok but barely had any chicken and wasn't salty enough for me. I added some soy sauce, but I was disappointed it was dark soy sauce instead of the light seafood soy sauce I was used to in Japanese restaurants. Meanwhile, my boyfriend's seafood yaki udon was too salty for him, so my solution was to mix my fried rice in his udon sauce. Overall, great decor, service, and plating. Slightly below average food compared to every other Japanese place I've been.

The 4-star rank goes to the sushi and rolls there. It's very fresh and tasted great! The bulgogi dinner and the bibimbap were not that good (probably we're not quite hungry anymore after the sushi so got more picky). Personally, the bibimbap had too much rice and the veggies/rice ratio was not good. The bulgogi dinner had lots of veggies which was awesome, but it's really oily to me. The taste was not bad, it's just too oily to us. It's a nice restaurant overall!

This is my first time been Colington. We had have lunch combo. It's was really tasty. Seshimi, salad and kampura are fresh and good. Plus, their service is good. I like them. I definitely will come back if I back this town next time. The bill was $57(after tax, not included tip)

It's our first time here at Tian Ya BBQ which is a decent Korean-style AYCE BBQ restaurant in Barrie. We usually go to ones in Markham and/or North York. Their fried spring rolls and scallops (4/5) were delicious with a good crisp on the outside, giving you a crunch with every bite. The spring rolls could use some more filling. The Volcano Roll was enjoyable (3.5/5). We liked how they had fried batter on the outside to elevate the texture of the dish. The cream cheese was a delight. The portions were big. The actual Korean-style BBQ was okay (3/5). The kimchi was a bit salty for us. We were hoping it would have more of the tangy, fermented taste to it as well. We liked that it was crunchy and tasted fresh. Their lettuce was also fresh. They did use iceberg lettuce instead of romaine which was different from what we regularly have at other places. We had pork, beef, beef short ribs and squid for grilling. Both the pork and beef were thinly sliced and tender. The beef short ribs were marinated well. Maybe a bit more sesame oil, garlic and ginger to the marinade mixture would really help bring out the sweetness and the umami of the meat. The cuts were okay; the meats could have been balanced with some fat/marbling to keep them juicy. We were also looking to have some ssamjang (fermented soybean paste) and sesame oil with salt to go with the meat. Overall, an okay place to go for AYCE Korean BBQ in Barrie.

For a group of three, we went with budaejjigae (army stew), which is good for two to four people. The server seemed surprised that we weren't ordering more. If the menu lists that it can feed four people, it seemed like plenty for us, and we aren't big eaters. We received four side dishes -- cucumbers, radishes, nappa cabbage kimchi, and one we weren't familiar with. We asked the server what it was, and he said the name, but we still didn't know what it was. I asked him to repeat it, and he appeared quite annoyed that he had to say it more than once. The army stew wasn't cooking once the server had set it down on the table. It looked like the butane gas canister was empty. We used the call button to call the server back, since he was nowhere to be found. The army stew had luncheon meat, sausage, beans, zucchini, kappa cabbage, tofu, rice cakes, instant ramen, and a slice of American cheese. It was delicious.  Overall, the food is good, but the service is quite lacking. We felt like we were bothering the server by inquiring about the side dish, asking for extra chopsticks, and requiring another gas canister.

There were lots of vegetarian and vegan options, such as the Steamed Vegetable Dumplings, Vegetables Bibimbap, Mushrooms Bibimbap, Vegetables Udon, Vegetables Fried Rice, Kimchi Pancake, Soondubu-jjigae (Soft Tofu Stew) in different variations, and more. The menu was pretty extensive, covering the most typical Korean dishes from the stews and grilled items, to a few Korean-Chinese dishes (such as Jajangmyeon) and everything in between. Steamed Vegetables Dumplings were quite small individually, but came in a sizeable portion. I liked the green onion garnish. Taste-wise, they were alright. Vegetables Bibimbap was excellent - good amount of mixed vegetables (spinach, zucchini, mushrooms, carrot strips, lettuce, bean sprouts) and the fried egg was perfectly crispy on the outer edges, with a still gooey and runny yolk. Grilled Croaker was also decent. It had a lot of small bones as it was a whole fish. It came served with purple rice, and we chose to add on extra lettuce. Seafood Knife Cut Noodles came in a big portion - with lots of slippery, thick udon noodles, pieces of seafood (mussels, clams, squid, shrimps, octopus), and a little big of vegetables (zucchini, carrot, onion). They came in a nice seafood-infused broth - perfect for a cold winter day. I'd come again for the variety of menu items they offer (especially the wide selection of vegetarian options), satisfying tastes, and great & efficient service.
