I took a Concealed Carry Class many years ago from a different facility/instructor. I haven't been shooting for quite a while, so I decided to take the class again as a refresher. Thankfully, I chose Pistol Safety Academy. The thing I remember most about the first class I took in 2000, was how incredibly difficult it was to stay awake during the classroom portion. I couldn't imagine how the instructor could have made it any more of a snoozer! I was really dreading sitting through that part yet again. But I was pleasantly surprised at how Ed made the classroom portion informative but definitely NOT boring! His classroom portion was interesting, entertaining, and interactive. Not only did I re-learn things I had forgotten, but I also learned important facts that I was never even taught at the other facility! Once you're on the firing range, safety takes top priority. Before any shots are fired, Ed works with each participant to answer any and all questions. His goal is to ensure that everyone understands what they will be doing once he begins giving commands, and that they are comfortable with their weapon. I really can't say enough good things about Ed, from his great personality to his knowledge of guns and gun laws. If you are planning to take any of the classes that Pistol Safety Academy offers, do yourself a favor and call Ed first. After speaking with him, you will not want to take your classes anywhere else!!

I don't know who told this guy he knows anything about firearms...but I'm glad they told him (if he…read moredidn't already know) because he is EXTREMELY knowledgeable. I've taken a 'concealed carry class' before...so i understand most of the concepts and standards. Yet, its amazing how a very experienced and skilled individual can shed new light on even the basics. Jason did that! He gave the facts on legality and what kind of behavior is expected of someone who expects to have the privilege of carrying a concealed pistol, but he also gave life to the discussion by providing details on much more including things like the difference between 'single action' and 'double action' revolvers. Yah, its not like it's a secret, but thanks to Jason...there are a few more knowledgeable people about to enter the guild of CCW protectors here in NC. Of course there's a practical portion of the class with target shooting. And once again, i feel like Jason went above and beyond either his instruction. He actually EDUCATED us about how to hold our firearms and how to squeeze the trigger in order to shoot accurately. He cares enough to train people well, and anyone would appreciate that. There are a LOT of options when looking for this mandatory class, but I'm glad i chose to spend my money with Liberty Defense.

For a total of 12 hours, it seemed like no time at all because the instructors made it so enjoyable. The classes were excellent. These guys have many years of experience between them all, and it shows. In the classroom, they allowed us to take time and ask questions. Ultimately, there weren't many questions because they were so thorough. They put a premium on safety. Especially on the range, where they had about 7 or 8 range officers there to assist and to ensure that everyone was safe. Overall, this was an excellent experience and I would recommend FTA to anyone looking to get their Concealed Carry instruction here in North Carolina.

The instructors engaged the class and the time flew by even when presenting the dryest of material. They emphasize safety, make sure you know how the laws apply to you, and teach you with real-world examples. The range time was handled safety first and everyone had appropriate instruction to ensure they were comfortable with their weapon. There were a couple of people who had problems with their weapons and the instructors were helpful and patient with them. FTA really cares about their students! Not only do you get fantastic instruction when you sign up, they care about you longterm too. If you want a refresher, the law changes, or you'd like more range time you are welcome to return free of charge. Don't get taken in by the cheap online courses. You won't learn what you need to know or be prepared to defend yourself.

Firearms Training By Elrod

I really want to give this class a good review because the people that ran it (Charles "Chuck"…read moreElrod and his wife Peggy) seemed to be pretty nice people overall. However, when trying to think of positive things to write about, few if any existed. To start with, the room where the class is held is a show room for a kitchen remodeling place. It's very hard to find, extremely small, and after spending 8 hours in those god awfully uncomfortable chairs I would have been all too happy to use them for target practice. As for the class itself, Chuck spends half the morning telling colorful stories about his glory days a military sniper and the other half not-so-subtly trying to sell the class various accessories from his gun shop. Then, we take a 20 minute drive to a make shift gun range located behind some random person's home in the woods where Chuck does his best impression of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman from "Full Metal Jacket." He doesn't foster a very comfortable atmosphere, especially for those that may have had less experience with firearms. I know all this was in the name of safety, but Chuck could really dial down the intensity. After getting back to the class, we then sat through another four hours of Peggy reading verbatim NC statutes about gun legislation with little to no elaboration other than citing news stories, the majority of which are not set in North Carolina. Bottom line, if you're looking for a course to take to get your concealed carry permit, there are other classes in the area that are cheaper and I don't think its possible for them to be less educational. Best of all, they come without Chuck's testosterone laden drill sergeant act.

I was so excited about enrolling in the class that was going to allow me to apply for my CCW…read morepermit. But my excitement was quickly and thoroughly dashed upon stepping into the loading dock section of Agri-Supply in Garner, NC where this class was held. I was greeted with "Yes, sir can I help you?" The problem with that is I am a female. Yes I have short hair and yes, I had a hat on, but I am definitely not a boy. The man who greeted me was Charles "Chuck" Elrod, the instructor, and I knew I was in for a very long day. (According to him, my short hair confused him.) Then I was told that my ammunition was unsatisfactory (still don't know why) and had to purchase another box from HIS gun shop. This experience was not getting any better. So I proceeded to enter the "classroom", which was a space slightly bigger than my bedroom closet, and was told not to adjust the air conditioner because it could go out at any time. The first words that came to mind were "rinky-dink operation." The class was scheduled to begin at 8:00AM, but by the time "Chuck" got around to mentioning anything about our gun training it was 9:15AM. Prior to this, our class of 19 people were talking among ourselves and listening to Chuck drone on and on about his life, what a great gunsmith he thinks he is and (the thing that pissed me off the most) his personal political views. When we finally got to the range (and I use that term loosely), Chuck was the drill sergeant from hell almost to the point of being abusive, especially to the participants who may not have that much experience with shooting. If it wasn't for his son Dustin, I would have left and never looked back. Dustin is very nice, patient and a wonderful teacher. Too bad he wasn't teaching the whole class. When we returned from the range, Chuck's wife Peggy took over for the legal portion of the class. Once again, personal views, especially political, were lectured to us in between reading articles and NC statutes. She told us exactly what to highlight in our hand-out she provided to us (supposed to be a manual according to their emails and website) and referred to herself in the third person most of the time. In conclusion, find another class to take in the area, and there are many, to avoid all the items mentioned above and hopefully you will receive a better educational experience than the one I had. You would be hard pressed to find another class with less pertinent information than this one.
