Agree with some of the recent reviews. This is a pricey haircut which im willing to pay to help style and shape my wavey hair. I expressed the last couple times I am trying to grow my hair out to make the most of my hair type. At my most recent appointment, I made repeat comments along the lines of "im just looking for a trim to clean it up while i'm letting it grow out" and the stylist chopped off most of my curls in a weird way making it hard to style and losing my progress. At a salon of this price point how often to I have to say "when" as they're cutting and clipping away? Also agree w recent post, styling products were Walmart quality. Save your money and support other salons, i'll be putting my hat on and looking elsewhere. read more

Horrible experience all throughout, and I would think twice about coming to this place. I went to get my haircut with Evelyn, and she completely ignored my instructions despite me being careful to check up with her. I asked for a (very) low fade with a reference and a picture, and I walked out with a clear high fade (if it can even be called a fade) in a way that I can't honestly understand. Reference picture and result, both of myself, are attached below. I voiced my concerns to her immediately at the moment and just like my haircut, she also ignored that and basically told me that it doesn't look too bad and it is what it is. I paid the nearly $70 for this. The owner tried to be helpful after I left and told me she would offer a refund through the phone. That was 4 whole months ago, and she still has not followed through to add more insult to injury and frustration. I absolute hate writing a bad review for any business, but this is just ridiculous. read more

I didn't really like my haircut I got here. I have curly hair. I met with Evelyn. She was really nice and I loved the experience, but I didn't like the cut. I asked her to give me input on what she think would look best, and the haircut she gave me looked similar to what I would get at a cheaper chain salon. I recognize there's only so many ways to do men's haircuts, but curly hair requires a bit more attention and I left with a blob on top that I couldn't style well. The putty used was not much different than what I was using at home from Walmart, which I'm not happy with and expressed I was having trouble styling my hair with basic men's putty/cream products. I immediately put a hat on when I got home. I was hoping that when I ask for the stylist to recommend a cut for me, they would give a practical suggestion that fits my head shape and looks nice. I felt like I might've needed to grow out my hair but we chopped all my curls off and I just didn't like it. I came to iMALE knowing it was a little pricey hoping for a more consultative and personalized experience. I think I could get the same haircut for cheaper. I'm going to keep looking for a salon that will provide a more personal approach with better recommendations on styling. If you already know what you want, I think Evelyn and the team would do a fantastic job. But if you're not sure what you want and are hoping they can give you that new years boost / transformation, look elsewhere. read more

Second visit to this salon for me. Best haircuts I have had in years and years. Fabulous pampering before and after cut. From hand massages - scalp massage - facial scrub - hot towel wraps and masks. Have had Noreli the first time and requested her the second visit. She is very very good. She must have made notes on my first cut and then reviewed for my second as she recalled it all. Not a cheap place - but you get what you pay for. And a great experience and haircut is worth it. They even offer a free "line up" in between cuts. Nice online booking system as well. I just moved to Chicago, and I'm picky about my hair. After having the same person cut it for the past 4 years I was really nervous to have to find someone new. But after looking around on Yelp and some other sites I decided to try iMale after finding quite a few stellar reviews. I had my first haircut there today with Cali, and I can honestly say, hands-down, this is the best haircut I have ever had in my life. The shop is clean, staff is friendly and attentive, and the perks that come with haircut including the hot face towel and the hand massage are great. That little extra really went a long way to make the experience memorable. Cali, the stylist, was incredible. I briefly described how I wanted it cut and when she explained back to me what she was planning it was spot on. I'm usually a little shy and don't talk much when getting my hair cut, but she made me feel comfortable from the second I sat down and had me laughing and chatting with her the entire time. Just an impeccable experience from start to finish. Edit: Just went for the second time and it was equally as awesome as the first time. Yes, they are a bit pricey ($55 for haircut), but not only do you get a good haircut, they wash your hair and hand massages! I'm moving out of Chicago, and iMale is going to be one of the places I'll miss. Rachel cut my hair for two years and could not have done a better job. She guided me through the process of growing it out and walked me through styling it during that process. Thanks to her, I never had an awkward phase between hair styles. Once we got it to the length I wanted, she kept my hair well-maintained. Even in the week before I was due for another cut, my hair was easy to style and held up well throughout the day. A haircut costs more than it would at a barber, but you also get a lot more, including shampoo and conditioning before and after your cut, a mini-facial and paraffin wax treatment for your hands. It's a great experience. The staff will ask you if you want additional services or products, but they're never too aggressive about up-selling you. Highly recommended. read more

I've been seeing Jamie for some time now and it's nice to walk into a place of business where you are recognized and appreciated as a customer. Jamie is talented so with very little guidance she'll have you looking great and on your way. In addition to a basic haircut, you get a hand massage, a hot towel with some moisturizer on your face and a scalp massage along with your hair wash. It's very, very relaxing and is a total stress reliever. I often get the upgrade which is a facial and while I've not had one before coming here, I can tell you that it's a great experience. If you've not had one, I strongly recommend it. These two ladies are masters of their craft and the environment is totally geared towards men. Comfortable chairs, ESPN on the flatscreens, modern (but not loud or obnoxious) music, hardwood floors and exposed brick. I've never had a complaint about my service here whether it has been nails, hair or a facial. The staff is always very friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable. I really look forward to going and getting a break from my day. Melinda and her business partner Jamie recently took over this location and have renamed it iMale. They've kept the basic layout of the space the same from the previous salon but have made great updates throughout making it feel like a brand new salon by refinishing the floors, adding new TVs, new lighting and so much more. They've implemented a rewards and referral program to actually reward you for your patronage. It says a lot that I've had the same stylist for over 2 years. I used to bounce around, just finding someone that can fit my schedule or even cut my hair at home in the bathtub. This place has a great vibe, very comfortable and Jamie is simply awesome. It's nice to be a regular and have some friendly banter the way through. She's great at offering suggestions of what to do if you want to change things up and the amenities you get with a hair cut are really nice. I always go for the upgraded facial, which is always a nice way to relax and chill out for a second in the middle of or after a hard day of work. I chose iMale because of the Yelp reviews. Back home I had been going to the same guy for years, so finding a new place had me worried. I left iMale impressed. Cool atmosphere with sports on every TV and a good mix of Zeppelin and the Black Keys playing. I got a pretty good cut and for the paraffin, mini-facial and hot towel, I don't think $43 is pricey. I recently moved to Boston after having lived in Chicago for 3 years and saying goodbye to iMale was among the top reasons this move was so difficult. They're the best at male hair fashion and while they're not cheap ($48-$49 from 2015-2018), I know guys getting $200 haircuts that aren't noticeably better than mine. Appointment handling is super punctual and I worked with 3 different stylists (Whitney, Sandra and Cassie) and loved them all. Super friendly and competent. If you're a guy in and around downtown Chicago, don't go anywhere else. Tried 3 places in and around Boston and haven't found even a close replacement yet. (Somebody help!) read more

I had a really bad experience with a big chain franchise place, so I wanted to find a high quality place downtown near where I live. iMale fit the bill perfectly. It is located on Ontario, over by the on-ramp to the Kennedy, but there is street parking on both sides of the street, and I have always found spaces nearby. The space is small, but efficiently used. It is basically a spa for guys... ESPN on overhead HD TVs, comfy chairs by the sinks for the shampooing where they also give facials and hand massage as part of the whole deal (or can be upgraded). The other nice perk is that one can stop in between visits for a "touch up," included in the base price. I was randomly assigned to Danielle W. and it was fortuitous. She has been a great stylist that I have seen for over a year. She always does a terrific job and has given me good advice for my hair. I plan to keep going back. The second cut was ok, however, my third cut was bad and I realized that they actually cut my ear and it was bleeding when I got back home. I have a high pain threshold, I didn't think it was bleeding until my couch had a blood stain. Haircutter didn't say a thing or even apologized. EDIT: Owner of the place called and apologized.
