Favorite meal in Rome. I love the Trastavere area, lively, local and diverse. The service was my fave pretty much the entire time in Rome, he was a young guy but so so so nice and warm. By this point in our trip we've gotten decent in ordering food in Italian so he was impressed and super friendly, even taught me how to pronounce one word properly which I really appreciated. I tried to express my appreciation in my limited vocab but our meal was peppered with a lot of exaggerated gestures, hand motions and big smiles on both ends, and this to me was the height of Italian warmth and welcome. The food was incredible, we ordered a half liter of red, fried zucchini blossoms to share, cacio e pepe, Amatrciana pasta with tiramisu to boot. The fried zucchini blossoms I've had before but never like this, usually just cream filled but this actually had a bit of anchovy flavor to it which was interesting. The cacio e pepe was incredibly simple but rich a nice complement to the Amatriciana which cut the richness with the acidity of the tomato sauce. The bacon was insanely crunchy in the pasta too which added another dimension in the dish, we had Amatriciana pasta nonstop in Rome but Il Duca's was the absolute best. The tiramisu was also incredible, incomparable to what I've had in the US, so rich and creamy with a ton of dark depth with the espresso. This was single handedly my favorite meal over the entire two weeks in Italy and will always be a cherished memory. Avoid at all cost! My wife purse was stolen and the fun sucks. The food was cold and absolutely tasted like dirty sand. You've got to run from this place never go here your purse will get stolen. You will get pickpocketed and you might have food poisoning. read more

We wanted something basic for dinner, on the last night in Rome on the first leg of my trip. We tried to hit this place that always seemed to have empty tables, but all of the tables were prenoted. We kept on walking up this small street in Trastevere that we hadn't been before, and it was busy on a Fri night. We ran into (The Duke) totally by chance, bc we saw empty tables inside: We were glad we did. For our primo, we shared a raw artichoke heart salad. For our secondi, ITC had the spaghetti guanciale (no pic), and I had the griglia mixta. Lastly, for our dolce we had a fruity dessert. First of all, the raw artichoke was a nice change of pace vs all the fried carciofi we had been eating. It had a nice texture, and the sweetness of the artichoke contrasted nicely w/ the light, slightly tart dressing. ITC really enjoyed her spaghetti bc it had the pork cheek. I had a bite and thought it was better vs the amatriciana she had in Tivoli. The small amount of guanciale was perfectly balanced against the al dente noodles. Thirdly, my dish of grilled meats was about as Roman as you are going to get. The meats were simply seasoned w/ sale & pepe, and came with a lemon to contrast the savoriness of the meat. There was no side, and I didn't eat the bread like most of the trip, bc I didn't want to waste room. Lastly, the light, fruity dessert was a good way to finish a savory meal. Regarding the ambiance, its rustic in here. Many of the patrons were locals, but there were at some Am tourists wearing workout shorts, T shirts and basketball shoes. By the looks of their bodies, their shoes have never touched a court - Ride da Solo (LOL). The service was good, not great. ITC felt our waiter was a little inattentive, even by Italian standards. BTW, tipping is optional in most of Europe. There is no line for a manchia (gratuity) on the check. However, most waiters/waitresses appreciate a €5 or €10 note, depending upon the size of the check. I highly recommend ID if you are looking for rustic Italian food, on a small street in Trastevere that only has foot traffic. GET THE RAVIOLI, just do it. Trust me. Favorite pasta in Italy. Bolognese was so-so. Fried zucchini were amazing. Stuffed with cheese. Delicious. Tiramisu was very very good as well! The artichoke salad wasn't my favorite, but after a week of eating straight cream, pasta, and meat, it was a welcome change. We were definitely the only Americans in the restaurant, but the waitress was great and we were able to converse enough to order which was perfect! OK spot. Waiter didn't speak much English so it was hard to communicate and ask for recommendations. A lot of options on the menu. We made RSVP and waited like 7 mins little before getting seated. The restaurant was packed though. Service was quite hit we did spend 2 hrs there. Started off with the fried artichoke. I didn't see the hype people are talking about here. I've seen other places that had a better presentation of this. I got the shrimp risotto which was good. The shrimp were small ones and there was only like 4 in a big plate. Husband got the meat lasagna which come in a big hefty amount. By this time we were fully already. But prior to this we ordered a porterhouse steak. It was huge! Wasn't that great, parts of it was way too chewy even those the meat was medium rare. Not sure if its because of the steak cut itself. Wine was the best part of the meal but we didn't know there's different sizes and ordered a big bottle! Had to down it LOL! House wine comes in a small Quart milk-like glass container. Rating 4.3 While shopping at Salvatore Ferragamo, one of the assistants there suggested Il Duca as a great local spot for good Italian food. I was a little skeptical at first because she wasn't originally from Italy, but boy am I glad I listened to her. Il Duca is located in the Travestere district which is a network of alleyways filled with restaurants, bars, shops, and homes. The food at Il Duca is LEGIT. If you want authentic Italian food, I highly recommend this place. I had THE BEST lasagna of my life here. Their house red wine is also VERY good (get the whole bottle for 10 Euros). Their artichoke was delicious and I liked the bruchetta. Okay why the 4 stars instead of a 5? I felt that the desserts could have been a bit better. They weren't bad by any means, but they didn't impress me like the rest of their food did. Also they gave us cold bread which didn't really do much to impress me. Out of all the little restaurants in this area of Trastevere, this place takes the trophy for me. It was recommended by one of my friends who is a locale of Italy. At first this place was hard to find since it's location on yelp did not match its actual geographical location, but I made a change to the map (awaiting moderator check). We showed up at 7pm on a weekday. Our first interaction with the staff was fantastic! They were really friendly and spoke some English. They sat us inside but right on a door so we had a perfect view of the street. We were promptly given water and bread. We ordered the lasagna and ravioli with spinach, ricotta and truffle sauce. The ravioli was definitely the better of the two but they were equally amazing. If you're in the area you must stop by this place, it's not busy, the staff is great and the food is even better! read more

Found this place for a late night dinner upon our arrival in Rome - within walking distance to our place! We were seated right away outside which was wonderful to enjoy the weather, and soak up the atmosphere as the area is pretty lively (but not too much so to overshadow dinner). Antipasto appetizer was wonderful, but the highlight is the pasta! Writing this after spending more than a week in Italy with my parents. We stayed three days in Italy, and ate mostly around the Termini Station, close to our hotel. We headed out for the Trastevere area, by recommendation of the hotel manager, to look for Da Tony restaurant. Da Tony was closed that night we learned from the incredibly nice host of the nearby Il Duca. We got a table inside. Service was attentive and friendly, they spoke perfect English. We had the chicken, the ravoli, and the beef (I'm going to take an educated guess and say it was braciole). Beautifully cooked and the lively street music only added to the charm. I decided to eat here after reading the menu from outside as I was staying a block away. Best choice ever! For starters we shared Fried Zucchini Blossom (stuffed with mozzarella & Sardine), friend cod & the fried artichoke. All were good but the fried zucchini blossom shined. Main courses were the Carbonara, a beef dish with mashed potatoes and a pasta with meat sauce. The Carbonara was among the best things I have ever tasted and the first REAL Carbonara I have ever eaten. We started off with the antipasto, which was simple yet boring. Also started with the bruschetta, with such flavorful tomatoes and it was quite delicious. How about an English review, eh? Definitely not listed in the "how to budget meals during your semester abroad" but absolutely worth a try. What Il Duca is known for is its steaks, and boy are they out of this world. Bite after bite just melts in your mouth and the whole A1 craving that you had before when you first smelled the steak has vanished. I am trying to remember what else I ate that night. Most likely your typical bruschetta con pomodori (tomatoes) and I am thinking a pasta dish as well. I think I had the carbonara that night, a typical roman plate made from eggs, cream and pecorino/parmigiano cheese. I have no idea when I will be back in Trastevere, but I will come back here when I return. read more

We just finished our meal here. The food and wine were delicious and excellent. The service, on the other hand, was a very strange and unpleasant experience. While everything was delivered and picked up in a timely manner - our server was extremely rude. After we filled up too quickly to finish what food we had coming, we asked for the remaining item to be packaged up to take home. He had the nerve to ask if we couldn't afford it. We had already ordered a bottle of wine on his recommendation alone, not even consulting the menu for a price - so confusing why he thought we would then back out of something we ordered off the menu, well aware of the price. The whole time, he acted like we were an after thought or trouble, while lavishing attention to the every whim of the table next to us (also Americans). I'm there to spend money. I would have stayed for dessert and after dinner drinks if he had not been so rude. After traveling through Europe for the last week and a half - this is the first absolutely negative experience I have had. Lastly - I work in the service industry at home and absolutely am usually more than understanding of personality differences, bad days, etc. But asking if we were changing our order because we can't afford it is inexcusably rude. read more

This restaurant is beyond amazing !! My boyfriend and I are traveling from the US and we stayed in Rome a couple of days. Our AirBNB host suggested we tried il Duca and we were beyond satisfied. The ambiance was perfect, not too loud, not too quiet. The restaurant was decorated soo nice- it looked very authentic italian. We made reservations and we were seated immediately. The server recommended great wine paired with the dishes we ordered and it was exactly what we wanted. We ordered the carbonara- which was the BEST we've had in Italy! We also ordered the Ravioli stuffed with spinach in a truffle sauce- and that was mouth watering! For main course we had the oxtail and the veal with potatoes and ham! Both were also great! Food in restaurant is ok but if the restaurant is busy they will actively urge you to leave by asking you to take the bill frequently and removing any items from your table not in use. The service was excellent! Every server was friendly, and Leonardo was so patient while we were ordering in our beginning Italian. The food was wonderful; I had the stuffed pasta with ricotta and spinach in a butter sage sauce with pecorino cheese. My boyfriend had the filet medium rare, which had a gorgeous salty crust. The star of the meal for me were the roasted potatoes with rosemary... Just indescribably good. The house wine is nice and just 9 euros per bottle. We had the chocolate mousse and cream caramel for dessert... Both just lovely. The chocolate mousse was rich but light. We are only in Rome for 4 nights and are already planning to come back. We tried several restaurants in the Trastevere area during our vacation in Rome and the food here was OK.

We had just left Il Duca. The food was very tasty, but the service was terrible. We were a table of 4, 3 Caucasians and 1 Asian...me. We had very good antipasta: lardo di Colonnata, artichoke, and bruschetta. Next, they brought out my porcini soup with the other's main courses, which they should not have. We finished this off and was waiting for my main course of seafood risotto. Well, we waited 20 minutes and no risotto. I asked the waiter about my risotto and he said it was coming right away. Another 15 minutes went by and no risotto. So, not being in the mood to eat while everyone else was going to sit there watching me eat my risotto, I asked for the check...at which time my risotto suddenly appeared within 30 seconds. Because I had been waiting so long for the dish and that it appears so quickly, it showed that they were ignoring me. So, I refused to accept the dish and asked for the check. If you want good tasting food, go here. But if you want good service, don't go to this restaurant. I would've given this restaurant a 1 star except that the food was tasty that bumped it up to 2 stars. read more

I went her with the girlfriend and her kids in 2006. We had rented an apartment in the same street. It was a Friday night and it was busy, but Trastevere is the local's part of Rome, so if it's busy, it's good. Luckily, as I'd thrown in a bit of Italian, and they love kids, we got a table. The family were knocked out having some real pasta. We started with prosecco for the adults, and everyone stole bits of my dessert, pannacotta...so I ordered a full round. I loved it. This place was recommended by our concierge over at bed and breakfast we are staying the night. The night started out well, we got to seat in the garden patio and it cute. Our Waiter was very nice and funny, but everything he recommended was against our taste. Grilled lam chops were skinny and over done, pasta was fatty and over salted, my wife's ravioli tasted really good, I guess it is home made. When we were ready for Desert our waiter was no where to be found and waited over an hr begging to get our check, I would come back to the area to check out other restaurants, looks like there is a lively night life as well, oh well maybe next time. read more
