I'm not sure how this place got a Michelin star. I'll give it to them that the service and the presentation of the food were top notch and what you would expect of a Michelin restaurant, but none of that matters if the food doesn't knock your socks off. I was kind of leary about coming here, because going against Yelp usually doesn't end well and I didn't find the menu to be that impressive from looking online. Well, chalk up another one for Yelp over the Michelin guide. We decided to go with the ala carte menu over the tasting menu. I had the Zuppasciutta (fish soup) while my wife had the Artichoke Carousel. I was expecting to actually have a whole soup, but what I got instead was 1 small piece of white fish cut up into 7 smaller pieces, 1 shrimp, a couple of clams, and a couple of mussels served on a decorated plate with a few spoonfuls of broth over it...and that cost €40. When the server brought over the small pot full of broth and started spooning it out, I thought "Oh, this is a very inefficient but nice way to serve me my soup", and I was incredulous when he stopped after a few spoonfuls of broth. Hoping that dessert would save the evening, I got the smoked chocolate with whisky ice cream while my wife got the "carbonara". The chocolate was a very well-constructed dessert that looked like a cigar in an ash tray, but the flavor just wasn't there. The dessert carbonara was actually pretty good. One thing to point out for anyone coming here, they ask for tip on the bill at the end. We didn't quite know what to do with that, because you don't tip in Europe, and they're the first place we dined at that asked for a tip. So, we weren't sure if their waiters were somehow getting paid differently where they worked for tips or if they were just asking for something extra. Either way, we didn't and we weren't sure if we were jerks for not tipping or if we just declined to pay unnecessary extra money. It was a downer ending to an already disappointing meal. read more

I am shocked by some of these negative reviews. What a fantastic experience. We did the tasting menu with all nine courses as we couldn't pick any that seemed we didn't want to try. Every course was stunning.. Favorites included the watermelon carpaccio which shockingly mimics a beef carpaccio and the chef uses mushrooms to create the same umami flavor. The creativity was incredible, with each dish having some amount of whimsy whether in plating or in service. Service was great and attentive. The ambience is beautiful inside, a bit tough to find from the outside but well worth the trek and find. read more

I had not read Yelp reviews and probably would have avoided booking since so many seem to be negative. I'm glad we didn't read them however, because we totally thought this restaurant was terrific, and in every way deserving of it's Michelin star. We had the smallest (5 course) à la carte and ordered 3 wines by the glass. Posted some picks of our courses, which as you can see are artfully presented. The portions are small. so the 7 or 9 course would be good. Only thing: both of us had to order the same dishes.. ie, we had to both choose the same 5. Not sure (I presume) that same rule would apply if you had more diners. Anyhow, we thought it was great. read more

Unfortunately I have to agree with the majority of the reviews here. The ambience, presentation, and wine are A+, but there are some shortcomings with the food. Primarily, while this place markets their vegetarian options, they didn't really pull it off. The very first dish of the tasting was a soup served in an oyster shell. I'm not sure which vegetarians they think enjoy eating out of animal carcasses, but I am not one of them. They also served me a meat dish before swapping plates, and later in the meal apologized and said there was a "problem" when I mentioned that my soup tasted of crab. The coconut milk tasted like it was simmered with crab shells or had crab broth added. Their reaction led me to believe I was correct, but I didn't ask for or receive confirmation that I had eaten crab. My partner had the omnivorous menu and enjoyed it more, although I don't think they were blown away either. Not a terrible place, but not worth €500 for two people. read more

*Beware, got sick after eating at this restaurant* I don't even know where to start. I have no idea how this place got a Michelin star. From the moment we walked in, we were surprised that this place was empty. That should have been our first clue. There were two other tables with diners besides us the entire night. The waiter gave us attitude about ordering anything off the ala carte menu instead of the tasting menu and made us very uncomfortable. My husband ordered a beer, which was brought to him in a dirty glass with lipstick still on the rim. When I brought this to the waiters attention, he said "I don't see anything". He resentfully brought us a new glass. Next, there were little flies buzzing around our table the entire dinner! One landed in my husband's beer, but of course at that point we were too nervous to say anything based on previous reactions. I will say one positive thing, the food was presented beautifully. I really wished our experience matched that. The taste was just OK. Not bad necessarily, but not Michelin star good. My husband also pre-paid a 15 euro extra charge for them to bring us a special dessert for our anniversary, they never did. We said something to the waiter, and he told us he will bring it out and refund our 15 euros. Well, that never happened. To make matters even worse, both of our stomachs started to feel sick a few hours after leaving the restaurant and returning to our hotel. I won't get into details but we got food poisoning. I contacted the restaurant and let them know for the safety of others. Not only did they shame us and call us liars, they made rude comments about how unfortunate it was to have us as guests. The manager blamed us for things that never happened. It was horrifying that a place would make customers feel this way. I politely asked for a refund. However, the manager just stopped responding to me. I must inform others of our experience of this place and how sick we got after, and let the public know about the danger of this food. If I would have seen a review like this, I would not have came here and ruined our anniversary dinner (plus the next few days of our trip). I am sure they will respond to this post and say more condescending untrue things to try and defend themselves, it's just too bad this couldn't have been handled privately via email. The food, the people and even the patrons make this place an amazing experience! We loved it so much that we came back the next night and saw two other couples there from the night before too! The mussels soup and caprise salad were amazing. In fact everything we ordered was superb. And the chef and his wife are so sweet that even tho their English isn't very strong, who cared? Whooooooah! Il Convivio Troiani served me my best meal in Rome on my last visit, bar none! Set in a beautiful space, the entrance to Il Convivio Troiani is secretive, almost clubby: you ring the doorbell to the left, the door opens, you are greeted to a warm space populated with professional wait staff. First, I loved loved the rooms, the layout, the whimsical yet artistic potato chip tree served at the table. The ingredients are source identified and organic. There is a seriousness to the staff here that may appear brusque, trust me it's just Rome. What followed next was a runway of dishes .....genius course after artful course, wine pairings selected by an able specialist, to the aged Barolo they paired with the boar in chocolate course, some courses assembled table side....2die4!!. The dishes were progressive in flavor and awesomely presented to the diner....you realize later only a skilled artist can muster this feat. You sigh each time a plate came. Impressed, dreaming about the wines, the squab liver in a cherry, the unforgettable squab consomme, the desserts, the fish course, the amuse, the house breadsticks, all sourced.........everything, haha! A fitting last meal in Rome, Il Convivio Troiani was top notch in both service and food. We ordered a la carte and were very pleased with our choices: octopus to start, then three pastas (amatriciana, egg spaghetti with prawn, and a porcini tagliatelle), the lamb and the pigeon, and finished with tiramisu (what else?). The egg spaghetti with prawns was divine - both a work of art to the eyes as well as to the taste buds. My boyfriend kept saying how if pigeons tasted this good, he was going to start trapping them in NYC. We also really appreciated the little complimentary courses of 'fake' food - the chia seed imitation caviar was very clever, as was the savory macaron and the pre-dessert. Quite simply, this has to be one of the top two meal experiences in my life! The restaurant was attentive from the moment they accepted my reservation. I received an email asking for confirmation 24 hours in advance and to provide a phone number. They also asked if we had any allergies or food restrictions. Upon asking, I was told the dress code is business casual. We were about 20 minutes early for our reservation and did not realize we were supposed to ring the doorbell to gain entry. A staff member had come out to take a phone call, and left the door partly open. Oops, our mistake! We were led into the art room, which had only paintings on the wall. The service was attentive but not intrusive throughout the evening. We only had to say once that we did not drink alcohol and it wasn't an issue. If he was disappointed, like about every other place we've eaten in Rome has been, our waiter did not show it. We never had to fill our water glass with the sparkling water we drank all night. We started with a "painting" of crispy flat bread since we were in the art room, complete with paint brushes and wonderful flavors in orange (tomato), green (spirolina), and brown (olives). It was fun AND delicious. The fresh bread that came with the meal was wonderful too. The evening played out like a symphony. The waiter's recommendations on the menu were spot on, and he delighted in the various choices we made. Each course was presented in a precise manner with full explanation of all the ingredients. There were even palate cleansers and an amuse bouche which looked like a macaroon but wasn't, and it was filled with foie gras and pistachios. All delicious. There was even a point where we had fake caviar make out of chia seeds! Clever and yummy! Throughout the meal, the chef kept surprising us with flavor combinations that I would never have thought would go together but did. Our appetizer course was Eel and Pan fried octopus. The octopus was paired with a faux mayonnaise, green beans and green apple. Faux because no eggs were used; mustard was the base with raspberry! Simply divine! The eel was also delicious... better than I thought eel could ever taste. Pasta course came with house made spaghetti with tiger shrimp, shallot and zucchini flower. The pasta was green (spirulina) and orange (turmeric!). I personally ordered the "Ajo e ojo" which was spaghetti with prawns, lemon, aged Parmesan and fresh mint. SO GOOD!!! Main course was Grey Rabbit and Pigeon. The pigeon reminded me of duck and tasted similar. The various preparations of parts of the pigeon were clever and tasty. This dish also contained the one thing I didn't care for: pigeon liver pate inside a cherry. Beautiful presentation but the cherry taste was lost but the overwhelming and somewhat gamey taste of the pigeon liver pate. The rest of the dish was quite good, and I loved the cherry sauce so much I could have licked the pan it was served in had no one been watching. The rabbit was quite good, and the black truffle shavings were a perfect touch. For dessert, we shared a strawberry sorbet with meringue, freeze dried strawberries and mint. It was a perfect end to a perfect meal, along with the coffee. We even got to greet the sous chef! No detail was unattended in this meal. The service was impeccable without being stiff and too formal. It was worth every penny we spent. Everyone should treat themselves to a Michelin Star restaurant experience at least once, and if you do, Il Convivo Troiani is the place you should do it when in Rome. read more

The presentation is amazing. And the service is unmatched. From the moment I emailed them for a reservation to my arrival to the entire dining experience is top notch. Sadly, the food is nowhere near the service. Not sure how they earn their Michelin star but I did the nine course meal and wine parings and it fell very short. The wine however, they were all amazing. Some of the best wines I've ever had. But the food itself was borderline disgusting. I really hate to say it. All the food I tried was cold. And I mean the center of the shrimp I ate was frozen. I also was wondering why the shrimp was so small, instead of it being prawns or a colossal shrimp? Very odd choice. I even had lamb tortellini and the lamb was virtually frozen. Maybe this was an off day and the stove tops were working but everything was cold. The flavors in theory was great. But the execution and preparation was dull. They did send over a few glasses of champagne and the chef came out and we spoke for a bit. I did however lie and said I enjoyed the food. He was such a sweet man and everyone was so nice I didn't want to be honest. All in all I wouldn't return. But I'm sure they have better days. Finally a great meal in Rome. This place has lived up to its reputation. The service and food was top notch. Probably the best service I have had at any restaurant. The chef and owner personally comes and greets each guest at your table. The creative dishes are amazing. The only reason why I didn't give it five stars is the ambiance could be a little better. White walls with bright lights and a big candle, which is useless. They should dim the lights a little so you actually see the candles. However, this is a great place to have a top notch fine dining meal. read more

Asked if it was 95$ per person or for the table and waiter said it was for the table which was two of us and it ended up being per person after I even asked three times. He encouraged me to do the 95$ tasting menu as well. For a Michelin star this was the worst meal on my trip. The reviews are older and everything on the menu is from 2021. Besides the octopus which is from 2009 and was amazing, showing that this new menu for 2021 did not cut it. read more

Were here last night and it was so bad we left halfway through the meal - AND THEY STILL CHARGEd US FOR THE WHoLE THING (374 euros). Not gracious at all. All the waiters seemed a little scared of someone. I have been to many top restaurants. This was a very bad experience ! Italian food at any random trattoria will be good, cooked with heart. The food here was pretentious, oversalted, in an unpleasant vinegar sauce, tune portions.... not good at all. The atmosphere was cold and very oppressive. Waiting for courses was very boring. While I was in Italy, I had the pleasure to visit multiple Michelin Star restaurants in the course of 2 weeks. Il Convivio Troiani was my favorite Michelin Star restaurant for dinner. Reserving my seat at the restaurant was easy. Also, the interior design and the room temperature was great. Waiters seem to be catering to the customers well. Let's get on to the food. I just want to know note that I went into with an open mind with no expectations. I had the multiple set course meal, but I opted out from the wine pairing, rather I chose the wine I wanted to drink. I just didn't want to be told that's the only wine I could drink for each meal, and I knew generally what I needed to go well with the food I was getting. Luckily, the menu provided me with what I was going to get in the set course menu, rather than getting the "surprise, this is what you're going to eat right now." Pasta was a little dry for me, but Chef Troiani's interpretation of seafood pasta was a seafood flakes or powder infused with olive oil and other ingredients. When I read seafood, I was expecting something more bulky, but it was in a powder form. I feel this is what gave me the impression that it was little dry. Similar to another Michelin Star restaurant I went to earlier in the week, Chef Troiani had 4 bite size samples on a small log. I enjoyed this quietly, and the small pieces had so much flavor and multiple angles of profile going at once. I had the combinations of sweet, fruity, salty, savory, etc. from different ingredients such as pork, truffle, apple, radish, pasta, etc. Red prawn dish was balanced well with the peach and coconut. Raw red mullet was good and a little bit of Japanese influence to it. The greens were fresh, and the crispy skin provided balance of texture for the raw fish. Another interesting dish was the concord grapes with corn salad. Cinta sense pig was basically a crsipy pork belly with mustard and fig. It was great and just what I was looking for after all the small bites. However, I believe the highlight of the entire set was the dessert. Specifically, the green tea sorbet with peach, cannoli, chocolate, candied leaf, and gold flakes. This was by far my favorite dessert. There were other dishes that came with the set course meal, but I don't feel like typing all of it cause it's too much. Overall for two people, we spent about 400 Euro. read more

After eating mediocre Italian food for 3 days, and yes you can definitely have mediocre to poor Italian food even in Rome, I had to find something to counter balance the parade of over salted but bland tourist traps I was unfortunately subjected to. After trying to get a table the other Michelin rated restaurants who were booked already I was able to be seated here without munch trouble. Both my wife and I opted for the tasting menu 125/each but just one wine pairing to share 95. We had an early flight the next day and would have been under the table if we did the full pairing each. Half is definitely the way to go. Our first course was a white shrimp fried with a tomatoe sorbet to cleanse the pallet. Very tastey with the right amount of oceanic aromas but not over powering. One misstep in my opinion was that there were a few fried potato strips which were soggy not crisp. The next few courses were spot on. The prawn two ways were fantastic with the fried head an equal match to the cooked prawn in coconut broth. The broth almost reminded me of Thai food. Very well executed. The pasta dish was also great with bits of fish and olives. I'm not normally an olive fan but this dish balances the saltiness of the olive very well with the other ingredients. The next course was a fish purée sandwich with some type of cracker and a dark sauce that looked like chocolate but was savory. Good and interesting but I think I would have preferred the fish itself. But this I'll admit is probably a personal preference thing. Finally there was a mini course of various pork preparations before the main pork shoulder. The pork shoulder was cooked well and seasoned to perfection. It was served with figs and mustard. A bit dull after the other creative dishes but still excellent. This brings me then the only true misstep of the evening. The mini course with several pork preparations and in particular the pork belly. Don't get me wrong the belly was great. However the choice of putting a small piece of raw red onion on top was too much. When I had my piece it was just too overpowering and overwhelmed the pork belly. This contrasted with the liver which had a piece of pickled onion on top only makes this error more self evident. Dessert was good with three small portions and came with a refreshing Mellon cream thing that was fantastically refreshing after the pork belly. There were several other mini bites through out the meal but they were not very memorable. Wine parings were good but nothing spectacular. They do have an extensive wine list though. The staff were very attentive and our server spoke English very well. The kitchen also seemed very accommodating as a couple seated next to us had all kind of food allergies which the kitchen worked around. So what's the final verdict? To compare this place to a tourist trap would be unfair, so I have to compare it to its peers. Having dined at other Michelin 3 star establishments you can see moments of pure brilliance and skill at il convivio, but there are also some glaring misteps. For these missteps I have to get the place a 4/5 overall rating. You will have a fantastic meal for sure but you may feel you paid just a little too much maybe by about 20 euros/person. read more

I am a foodie from NYC. I have lived in NYC for 20 years so I know food and I know service! This place has NEITHER of these components.....I arrive and am seated at my table. The place is lovely rather plain but simple. I was expecting a wonderful experience. I was offered a glass of wine and was told they only had ONE type of white by the glass......okay I was a sport and went along with it. I was offered the menu...the prices were high but to be expected. I asked if they had half bottles and was told they only has a few so I decided to take a peek at the wine list just to see. Massimo the owner comes over and gives me the wine list with the comment "we have only the finest wines in Rome". The half bottles were ALL around 255 euro's......REALLY. Okay so I go to the wines by the glass and I ask Massimo to help me choose....out of the wines that they have I ask what characteristics he likes of 2 the pinot as well as the merlot......he says one is fruity one is not as he is pointing. I POLITELY ask to have a taste of each so that I may choose. Massimo was RUDE and then some....he acted like a child that was just told he needed to go to his room for acting out.......stomps off to get the wine............comes back and I am thinking to myself.....this man owns this establishment? ODD behavior.......okay so I taste the wine......the merlot which is what I wanted to SO CORKED THAT HELLEN KELLER CAN SEE THAT IT IS CORKED! I POLITELY say I would love the merlot but I believe that the bottle might be a bit off (cough not a bit way off).....he turns looks heavily irritated and grabs a glass so he tastes it.......says NO its just a RARE vintage (WITH FLAIR!) At this point I am not going to spend money at a place that the owner is so vulgar and rude.....I was so embarrassed for him. So I just got the pinot which to be very honest it was NOT even WORTH drinking....I at this point just want to cancel my dinner because of the lack of service and attitude...ESPECIALLY from the OWNER of the establishment! My fish arrives and I just thought I will eat then go.......my fish was SO over cooked that I felt like donating it to the national hockey league......I now realize this restaurant is NOT meant for high ratings.........If I were someone who LOVES food I would STRONGLY suggest going to another restaurant INSTEAD of this one. SAVE YOUR EURO'S!!!!!!!!!!!!! And Massimo its time to retire when your attitude is as poor as yours! read more

My granddaughters wanted us to go to someplace really nice......this nicely fit the bill. We had a bit of trouble finding it as it is a little out of the way.....when we got there and rand the bell, it was the beginning of a wonderful experience. Everyone had spectacular and creative meals. I know the menu changes, but the crab soup with a coconut milk base was tremendous!! My wife had a lamb dish cooked four different styles that was amazing. The chef came out and warmly greeted us.....we loved it! read more
