Stopping by here with two of my kids after a day of tubing on the Delaware River, we ordered the sicilian pizza and were instantly amazed at how delicious it was. The ratio of sauce to cheese was perfection, with the sauce offering a robust tomato flavor without the sweetness of commercially produced versions. The crust was perfect: not too thick (or doughy) and not too thin (or wimpy). We ate our fill and marveled at how it hit the spot and made it a point to come back the next time we were in the area. Situated on Route 97, the ambiance of trees in full bloom could hardly have been nicer. The service wasn't the fastest, but it was definitely worth the wait. We'll be back! read more

Unfortunately our meal was terrible. Pizza was undercooked, meatballs meh. The worst was the chicken wings, dry, you know how it gets wooden, at least day old. The main room is spacious and the outdoor seating nice. Not busy for an end of summer Friday night. Waitress attitude and scowl tantamount to our feeling of unease. Yet another crap dining experience in the Poconos. The person who opens a decent restaurant in this area will become a millionaire. The fam ended up here last night after our initial dining plans didn't work out. First thing you notice is chaos: there's a ton of people waiting in the front area for to-go pizzas. After we managed to mosey into the dining space there is one--ONE--waitress for the entire restaurant who is serving, bussing, running, etc. Her greeting to us was "No menu. Only pizzas." We're like OK, OK, no problem, and then ten seconds after she flies away, she comes back to serve the table next to us calamari, soup, and what looked to be stuffed mushrooms. ???!?!?????!?!!?? When she comes to take our order, we ask about the radical non-pizza dishes going out and she clarifies that we can get apps. Fine. So we order calamari and a pizza. The calamari is not as bad as we expected but it had a strong fish smell and we do not even want to think of what frozen food giant it came from. The pizza took FOREVER to come out, like close to 45 minutes, and let us assure you that it was not worth the wait. It was bland, chalky, and overly doughy with canned mushrooms and suspicious sausage. We all ate it like a bunch of backwood fatties since we were hungry, but it did not feel good afterward. Not sure why this place was the hottest spot in town on a Friday night, but we're guessing that it has something to do with it being the only spot in town. Call us city snobs, no problem, but there was absolutely NOTHING positive to say about "Il Castello" (LOL, more like castle of pizza hell!). read more

Pizza places usually make good cheesesteaks. The one I had here was one of the best cheesesteaks I've ever had in my life... and it was huge. I ate the whole thing and barely touched my cheese fries because I was stuffed! I'll have to go back and try the pizza some time, if I'm not at the cardiologist haha. read more

Kids ordered pizza, which was alright, nothing so special about it. My husband and I shared Clam Marinara, the portion was huge (typical American style), the Clam was sandy and chewy, the sauce was made with canned tomatoes and fried garlic, nothing to rave about. But what made us write this review is the Tiramisu. Because we have had fake Tiramisu from many places, so we asked if it is made with real ladies fingers and made sure it is not sponge cake. The waitress, with her strong Italian accent said definitely lady fingers, it is made in the house, with real Mascarpone cheese. The moment she walked to our table with Tiramisu approaching, I could see clearly it is the yellow sponge cake staring at me. I had a bite to see if it is even real mascarpone. Nothing about this dessert is Tiramisu, no coffee taste. Just another chocolate/vanilla sponge cake. Then the waitress came with the check, we asked her again and she said it is lady fingers. She even asked her brother, owner of the restaurant, he yelled out from the back yes it is. We felt very disappointed, they didn't have to lie. We didn't want to argue about this in front of our children. No integrity. Service was ok, the waitresses looked burnt out, she walked like a zombie when she came to our table. Ambiance was ok. Just moved nearby from Brooklyn NY this is the best pizza I have found just as good as NYC pizza. The calamari and sauce is delicious the calzones are very good . Not sure if it was an off night for this restaurant. But everything but the salad bar was gross. I got eggplant Parmesan and it tasted old and really disgusting. Kids got penne vodka which had big pieces of bacon or ham in it in the sauce with mushy penne. Another kid got fried vegetables app, it was disgusting fried a few times which made a bunch of the veggies black. My husband got a chicken ceaser wrap which had tomato and stringy bacon that was the complete opposite of crispy. The service was slow slow slow. And waitress not very friendly. She didn't ask us how anything was and didn't mention anything when all The dishes were pretty full as she was handing us the check. I ordered eggplant rollatini and it came with pasta, salad, and humongous Italian bread. The rollatini was good, included spinach which I like. As soon I got there to pick up, the food was ready. The service was excellent and super friendly. I appreciate that the food serve through the window to maintain social distancing, and only two people at the time can be in the pick up area. For people not familiar with the westernmost end of Sullivan county, Barryville is halfway between Port Jervis and Callicoon. There are numerous small towns along the Upper Delaware river. Barryville is an odd one. Located at an important intersection of Route 97 and Route 55, and at a bridge connecting PA and NY, Barryville flanks both sides of Route 97, lacking the traditional downtown or town square so prevalent in Catskill communities. Because of that, it's hard to get a bead on the town's spirit, which is there, but you have to know where to go. It is small by even Sullivan county standards, but has become a hotbed of activity for second homeowners, artists and patrons of the arts from northern NJ and NYC. Il Castello is not going to set the world on fire for its cuisine, but it provides a sorely needed dining option in an area where not only are places few and far between, they are also usually pretty mediocre. Traditional red-sauce Italian specialties are offered alongside pretty darn good pizza, which they churn out like speed demons on weekends. Whatever you do, don't come on Friday night when you get up here for the weekend. It's one of the few affordable, tasty and casual restaurants in the area, and people line up three deep at the counter to place takeout orders or to pick up the ones they phoned in. There are bears up here...no, they don't deliver. The calzones are particularly good, with most eggplant dishes up there as well. Pizza is hot, fresh and very well done. They are great at accomodating kids, and have a huge beer selection with some nice surprises. Steamed broccoli comes with a ton of garlic. Yum. I want to emphasize the remoteness of this location. This is the country. Not the suburbs. The country. The fact that a pizzeria of this caliber exists here at all, much less is this good, is a real blessing. read more

We quickly forgot about our dilemma - stuck in a cell reception void in the darkened woods - after entering the aromatic surroundings. For a group of 9 guys hungry after a full day of camping and tubing at nearby Kitattiny campgrounds, we decided to stop by this place for dinner on a Sunday around 5 o'clock. It started to get busy only halfway through our meal, but the atmosphere was very calm and the decor was rustic Italian. We ordered appetizers (four orders of garlic knots, fried jalapeno cheese ravioli, calamari, and a large salad) and three large pizzas (pesto, grandma, and buffalo chicken), and everything was delicious. The garlic knots were decent and I didn't try the salad. The calamari seemed a little tough, and the fried jalapeno ravioli, as good as it sounded, was a little underwhelming (more like breaded and fried cheese ravioli with some jalapeno bits in them). However, the pizzas were delicious. The buffalo chicken pizza came out first, and we each devoured a slice (for those of you counting at home, one person was a vegetarian so it was exactly 8 slices for 8 people). There were little pools of buffalo chicken oil that weren't overly greasy at all, it just enhanced the flavors. The pesto pizza could have had more veggies but the bread tasted of the perfect amount of butter. Lastly, the grandma pizza (contains anchovies) had just enough toppings not to be too salty (as anchovies can do). This place was as good as it gets! Barryville is not a hot bed of culinary options, to say the least. We came into town to go camping and were soon amazed by the fact that the local grocery store closed at 7pm and we had brought no food for dinner. We followed the smell of delicious pizza and found this place. There were several carry out specials and we chose one with wings/pizza to take back to our campsite. There seemed to be a steady stream of people who were also ordering pizza that night, so it seems to be a local favorite. After waiting about 15 minutes, our pizzas were finally ready. We got one large cheese, one large pepperoni, 20 wings, and a soda for just under $40, not too bad. I only tasted the pepperoni pizza, which was quite large and very heavy with toppings. It was pretty much your average pizza. However, it was good and hit the spot after a day of traveling to get to this location. read more
