This place is amazing, I've only had drinks there but the atmosphere is incredible. Old time bar seats that fold out from the bar, inexpensive drinks and meals. The meals are prepped upstairs and then sent to the bar on a dumb waiter. Upstairs there is a set your own pin bowling alley that costs $15 for up to 10 people for an hour. During Covid, I learned of Rohman's and their incredibly old, set-your-own-pins and return-your-own-ball second floor bowling alley. As a hardcore bowling enthusiast, this pilgrimage was long overdue, so my girlfriend and I made a stop in Shohola on the way to my cousins wedding. This bar is super old-school. We are talking dust-on the walls rustic in the most kitschy and classic way. This place is so old that the bar stools are hinged to the bar and drop down upon use, the cigarette machine is well over 50 years old, it is heated with a pot belly stove, and there is one television which is grossly out of place but nice to see. Frankly, There is so much history within these walls that there are photo albums for visitors to enjoy and learn from, not to mention local regulars and staff who are willing to tell you anything about this place. Let's talk about the service. Everyone who works here is incredibly nice and focused on guest experience, mixed with a tint of Mountain style Poconos hospitality. Regulars and tourists (like us) all get treated the same - as if we have been coming here for decades. What we loved the most was that this place, old as it is, uses a hand-pulley dumb waiter system to raise and lower food and dirty dishes to and from the kitchen. It is LOUD and it is perfect because I wouldn't have expected anything else from a place like this. Amazing. Let's talk about the food: mixed bag to be honest here. My girlfriend ordered a chicken BLT which was massive in portion, bacon cooked perfectly and not too crisp, chicken grilled nicely, fresh veggies, and served with delicious fries. I ordered a hot dog which took well over 20 minutes longer than the chicken BLT, was served on an ice-cold hoagie roll, and tasted like stale bologna, so I managed only two bites. The relish on the dog however was delicious and zesty and I put some of it on the chicken my girlfriend did not eat and was more than satisfied. I will say that the staff, realizing I was not happy with the wait or the hot dog, was solid to remove it from our bill, so props for great service. Now to the bowling, which is on the second floor. I don't think one can bowl in an older, less technological bowling alley anywhere in North America. The balls are from the 1960s and earlier - hard rubber with conventional grip. The lanes are hardwood (formerly lacquered) with no oil or aiming arrows. The pins are mixed - some hard rock maple from the mid 20th century, and some new ones to replace the old and broken sticks. The photos of this room do it justice and We felt transported back to yesteryear for an hour. I managed to bowl a 146, which, with no modern pin deck, bouncing the pins into each other, I was glad to achieve. My girlfriend bowled impressively too, and both of us thoroughly enjoyed the act of removing dead wood, returning the balls via the ball return, and resetting pins for each other. Spoiler: this will work up a heavy sweat, but man was it worth it! Bowling costs $15/hr and is added to your bar tab - a solid value. Overall this was a fantastic afternoon, and we decided we will definitely do this again on our next trip through here. Food was the only reason this wasn't five stars but if the food is better next time we will absolutely move this up to top tier. This gets a solid recommendation for sure! read more

You can't make this up. Deliverance on the Delaware River in Pa. Near the NY border. Old and dusty legendary pub that has a few old fashioned, still used bowling lanes where you must manually pick up and reset the pins. Cool bar stools that tuck into the bar and rotate out. Really a place to stop in for a visit before it is nolonger exhists.. I worked nearby in Lackawaxen in the late 80's and we used to drive on a dark, deserted road for a few miles and end up here to shoot pool and unwind. We have friends who come here every winter for the Olympics aka Man Weekend, which I hear is out of control. A banjo less man continued to wave at me as I pulled away and drove off. read more

So I may have ended up at Rohman's Inn and Pub for a different reason than most. My boyfriend and I didn't just happen upon it. We actually came across a review online and went, "One of the oldest dive bars? Let's do it." So we jumped into our car, decided on a Pennsylvania day trip, and drove over to Shohola to check this place out. Rohman's Inn and Pub is quite a place. We drove through a lot of winding roads to finally find it, only to park right next to the railroad tracks and convince each other that we needed to head inside. From the outside, it definitely looks like a dive bar - and like a place where there are a lot of regulars, which I'm pretty sure is true. However, we were pleasantly surprised when we walked inside. There is a pool table, some seating, an arcade game or two, the bar, and an old coal stove. We decided to sit on the end of the bar, where the bar stools actually rotate in and out. When you need it, you pull it out, and you can just rotate it back in when you're done which helps create more space at the bar. You can definitely tell the age from the place but it had a homey feel. Although many of the patrons seemed to know each other, they were still pleasant and polite to myself and my boyfriend and struck up a conversation. My boyfriend chose to drink beer while I tried out a gin and tonic. The gin and tonic was well-balanced and not overpowering at all. There was a funny sign on the wall that was definitely a conversation piece; in fact, the entire quirky, old, interesting nature of this place is a conversation piece. My boyfriend and I each had two drinks and a shot; our total bill came to just $17!! We didn't get to go up and look at the old-fashioned bowling lanes but they do sound quite fun. While the drive to Shohola isn't something that I'd be willing to do constantly, I may find myself driving back another weekend for a cool getaway and some great drinks. Definitely worth a stop in for any of you adventurous travelers and drinkers out there. read more

Sometimes the dirt doesn't wash off. In the case of Rohman's Inn, a relic from pre-Civil War times, the dirt is over 160 years old. It served as a hub in days of yore, first as a town meeting, even before Shohola became a town, and then as a watering hole for visitors from NYC who were dropped off via the Eerie-Lackawanna train. We were basically the only patrons in this definition of a dive in Shohola, PA, straddling the border between this state and NY. (If you've hit NY, you've gone too far.) Two inches thick of dust (read: dead skin) cloaked the countertops and walls (okay I am absolutely exaggerating, but for story's sake... .) My jaw dropped when I found out the price of my tasty gin and tonic: $2.50. The decor was a mix of old and new. Pool tables and a rather impressive TV are juxtaposed next to vintage signs such as "Everybody can bring happiness into this room, some by coming in, other's by going out." Jukebox upstairs and down. An interesting feature is the swath of military and servicemen patches proudly displayed along the back bar. Like you can tell the age of a tree by counting its rings, you can tell the age of the patch by the dust and soot. Best part of all? The bowling alley on the second floor. Four lanes of duckpin bowling, must have been forty or so heavy cannon-ball-bowling bowls (one with about 20 fingerholes)... and you better believe you have to restock your own pins and roll back your own balls by shimmying down the gutters. Keep your own score. A place I won't soon forget. Finding it was like writing the start of your own horror movie, but the sheer awesomeness of this place outweighs the sketch. read more

Ok.... this place is pretty cool mainly because of its history, location and uniqueness. Located across from RR Tracks, you enter the a door that hardly looks like and entrance to a bar. Once inside you see it is clearly a dive bar. What a shame! So many cool things inside. This place could be a gold mine if just a bit was put into it. Tablecloths, arrange the dining area tables nicely, some ambiance. The bartender was nice, informative and attentive. Beers were on the pricey side for the type of place it is. All aside, it's worth a go to for a drink and a look at the binder filled history of the building and locale. I almost hate to review this place because my experience was so perfect and I hate to give away my secret awesome bars! Yes, I would call it a dive bar, but one of the highest order. The drinks are cheap and the bartender is super friendly. There is as other's have said a four lane, manual reset-pin bowling alley on the second floor. Also on the second floor is an awesome dining room. There is nothing divey about the dining room at all. It is a clean and well kept restaurant with excellent food. I had a steak and it was just right with fresh veggies and mushrooms. The service was great up there as well. I stumbled on this place when looking for things to do while riding my motorcycle up around the Hawk's Nest. If you are into real relics with heart and soul visit this place, I know I will certainly be back if I am within 50 miles. read more

Someone told us about this place while we were parked with our bikes along rt. 97. So, when it was time to get a bite to eat, instead of going to Cedar Rapids we went to find Rohman's. There were a bunch of bikes parked among the few cars, and a tired dog curled under a table that some patrons were seated at outside. So, in we went and it hits you right away, This is an authentic hole-in-the-wall place. Friendly locals and service. Since it was lunch time, I ordered a cheeseburger and fries along with a drought beer.I ordered it cooked medium and it came out perfectly. A decent size burger with lettuce; tomato; onions (on request); and a side of mayonnaise. The fries were fresh and crisp. I will certainly be back again during the fall. read more

GREAT MEMORIES!!!! An absolutely wonderful place! I worked there in the summers of 1958 and 1959 when I was in high school. Art Rohman still owned the place and tended bar seven days a week. I used to set up pins in the bowling alley when there were bowlers. My mother and grandmother knew Rohmans probably for about fifty years back then. Wonderful people to work for and with. Art Rohman must have been in his seventies at the time and a font of history. He provided us free lunch, although he did not serve food to the public then. The hotel had stopped functioning as a hotel by then. Mr. Rohman lived in one of the rooms as did one of his bartenders.His nephew Nick lived in the house left of the front of the hotel and worked as a bartender. Before I arrived, Mr. Rohman had had his own barber living in the hotel. When that was discontinued, he would drive across to Barryville to go to Trevor's barbershop (on River Road) who was also the Justice of the Peace. That and going to funerals were the only time he left the building. He never waited at Trevors. John Trevor used to ask the person whose hair was being cut to leave the chair so that Mr. Rohman could get his shave. Sometimes there were three or four people waiting for a haircut. Mr. Rohman always paid for the haircuts of those he cut in front of. I do remember the great baseball pitcher Smoky Joe Wood coming in periodically for a case of beer which I would carry out for him. There was also the mail car on the train which went around 4:00 every afternoon. A six pack (cost a dollar then) was run out to the mailcar every day. They never tipped. Sundays were a spectacle. PA. had Blue Laws which prohibited bars from being open on Sundays. Rohman's was exempt. The Catholic Church was a few hundred yards away. When service let out, most of the attendees walked down the street and into Rohman's. On that day Mr. Rohman was known as Father Rohman. I was told that Rohman's was open all through prohibition. Politicians then were no different than today, although it was probably cheaper to bribe them. The boarding house trade was going strong back in the 1950s. There were many in the area. Pre-lunch cocktails were a regular routine for the boarders. I used to bus tables and restock the bar (only fresh fruit in all the drinks). At around 11:30 AM the place would fill with boarders. I would guess that there were more than 100 patrons crowding the place. Then it would empty as they went back for lunch (12:30 I think). Kids were welcome. My parents used to take me there when I had to stand on a chair to play one of the two pinball machines. Rohman would often come over and throw a bunch of nickels onto the machine for us kids to use for additional games. Nighttimes were crazy. Whatever the capacity of the bar, you couldn't get another person or table into the barroom. There were five bartenders on at night and often the customers were five deep at the bar. Friday nights were the worst. Husbands used to come up from the city on the train after work and walk right across the tracks into Rohman's to join their wives. Busing tables was difficult because you couldn't navigate around the room. There were three doors across the front (railroad side). To get to the other end of the bar I would go out the nearest door, walk to the farthest door and re-enter there. Getting back with a tray full of glasses and ashtrays retraced the route. A great place! I am tempted to come up from NC to revisit the old times. The name I use is a pseudonym. Stopped by on Saturday for the very first time while taking a quick break from our 35th anniversary canoe trip. Been around forever and looks it, never closed during prohibition, original fold down bar stools, 2nd floor bowling (have to set the pins yourself), bikers at any given moments, drinking outside, right next to the train tracks (might even see a train if you drink long enough, drink too much and you might end up under one) big, buxom milkfed bartenders (at least the last time I went) if you're into that kind of thing, which I am. This place is awesome! It is from pre-civl war times. It is old and smelly but that is kind of the appeal. The beers are super cheap and I hear they have good food, although I didn't try any. You can go upstairs and check out the old bowling alley as well! We went on a slow night but they were having beer olympics the next day and have karoake at night and it gets packed out! Had the best times at Rohman's in our 70'S camping days at Shohola Campground. Saturday night was the best with the local people and the staff from the surrounding Summer Camps. Went back around 2006 and it was like being in a time warp. You can't repeat history but memories are forever. Loved Rohman's. Walked over from Barryville, NY. Train tracks run right in front of the place, and it sits on a bluff overlooking the river. Me, my husband, a few locals were only drinkers early evening Easter Sundy. Place is heated by a coal stove that looks like it dates to the 1800s. Bar stools are curved pieces of iron topped with wooden discs that fold under the bar (not super comfortable, but super-old). Very nice barkeep handed us a scrap book upon finding out we'd never been before. I love this kind of local history - so it was cool to see photos of the place in its heyday, read a few of the many articles that have been written about Rohman's over the years, and look at copies of pages from the guest register when it was a grand hotel - guests included Charles Lindbergh and Clara Bow. We also got a tour of upstairs self-set bowling alley - a must -see. Our five drinks cost $10 (bartender bought us the last one). Definitely a great spot to visit if you are in the upper Delaware valley. Kitchen wasn't open, so can't comment on the food. read more
