    The size of one piece of the overcooked soggy "gyozas" - more like a gyoza cut in half.

    Just heard about this place today and was excited to try.. ended up being so disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful there is at least one Japanese restaurant in Vancouver that's 100% gluten free.. but the quality/portion/price ratio is just sooooo out of whack here that I honestly can't give a higher rating. We ordered quite a few things for a party of two, here's a summary: - Pork gyoza: 5 pc for $8.95. Sure, it's pricey but whatever.. not like I can eat gyoza anywhere else. When it came, I was honestly a bit indignant. The "5 pc" was more like 5 pieces of half-sized gyozas, the skin was soggy and it was completely overcooked. - Dynamite roll: $7.75 for the smallest dynamite roll I've seen, and on top of that the rice did not have any rice vinegar taste in it. Just like regular rice. - Chicken kaarage $10.75: I didn't think you can mess up chicken kaarage, but they actually managed to. The chicken was clearly under marinated to the point there was no flavour - no soy sauce, no ginger, nothing. AND they didn't even salt it. I had to ask for extra salt just to make it palatable. Also the skin was soggy and not crispy.. and somehow it was overcooked??? - Chicken teriyaki don $14.95: Portion was actually ok, it was just chicken and mushroom on a lot of plain white rice. Still dry and overcooked, and a bit bland. On par with food court teriyaki maybe. - Power bowl sushi $18.95: Tiny portions for the price, but hubby enjoyed it for what it was. Overall if this was just a normal Japanese restaurant this would be a 0-1 star in my books, but it's 100% GF.. which buys the extra star. The whole ordeal cost $76... Still, at least it has inspired me to buy an airfryer for kaarage and tempura and to and make my own gyozas. I won't be visiting again.

    First time having gluten free sushi, and agreeing with the other yelpers, you'd never know it was gluten free. With that said, did I like it, yes. Was I blown away, no. Would I come back, it's a possibility. Tip: I suggest spending your dinner inside the restaurant. The patio isn't the best option on a nice sunny day due to the frequent bus stops right at front. BEEP BEEP BEEP SHHHSSSH.

    was a bit hesitant because of all the wishy washy reviews but we went at lunchtime and it was spectacular. I have MCAS, severe gluten, dairy, egg, and bean allergy. Surprisingly eating in Vancouver has been difficult, going to places that are dedicated gluten free and having staff act like i'm crazy when i ask about allergens. I called ahead of time at Iki and let them know of my allergies ahead of time when making a reservation, and upon arriving i didn't even need to repeat myself and he remembered everything. they were so caring and diligent and let us know of everything we would need to know. i've never felt so comfortable eating somewhere with allergies. People were complaining about portion sizes and prices, but i did not find them unreasonable. they were japanese portions and prices to fit the allergy accommodation. All of the food was incredibly fresh. As for the service, they clearly don't have a massive number of staff. I felt very VERY attended to and whenever we needed something we got it. I understand if there might be a lack of attentiveness when the restaurant is completely full, but with the small number of staff you can't expect them to be able to be that attentive when they are tending to so many people. the service we had was wonderful. if you have celiac or any severe allergies, this is the place to go.

    The restaurant is conveniently located outside a 99 bus stop and is quite close to UBC. I've personally always had bad experiences with gluten free food due to it tasting "off", however this was not the case with this restaurant! Everything tasted just like how a non-gluten free sushi place would taste like, which really surprised me. The food was overall very well made and well presented. The sashimi garnered comments such as tasting fresh and possibly free range wild salmon as the color was a vibrant red. The servers were very accommodating and checked up on us a few times due to allergen concerns. Overall, for the price (~$140 total) I would say it's worth it (considering that gluten free foods are typically more expensive and has a different taste to the original; also can get brown rice at no additional cost).

    Came here for a late lunch bento and WHAT A DEAL. Seriously. I think my vegetarian bento box was $8 and it came with so many components I couldn't possibly eat them all! I sure tried, though. Fresh edamame, excellent tempura with unusual veg choices like broccoli and eggplant (great), a delicious salad, yummy rolls, and the best tofu teriyaki I've ever had - they used a reasonably firm tofu, grilled it, added some shiitake mushrooms, and served it all with fluffy rice and a great teriyaki sauce. I was very impressed with the value for my money, and the service was also excellent. I tipped 30% and it still felt like a super deal. Also, even though they closed while I was in there (last customer of the lunch service), I didn't feel pressured to leave at all.

    We went on a Sunday at noon and it wasn't very busy, so the service was great, very attentive. As a celiac I was very excited to try the tempura and the gyoza. The tempura was great, even my partner (who is not celiac) thought it was better than regular tempura. The gyoza was admittedly small (it looks less like dumpling and more like.... A flattened roll of gyoza that's been cut into bite sized pieces), but in my opinion it had more pork filling than normal gyozas. I got a tuna roll, and it was so fresh and delicious. My partner, who is very particular about the freshness of seafood, enjoyed the tuna roll, which is unheard of from him. We also got a miso soup (i didn't try this, but my partner enjoyed it; it had more veggies than the usual seaweed), 2 cups of green tea, agedashi tofu (yummy) and a dynamite roll. The total came to $68, not including tip, which is pretty steep. I won't come here often, but it's a nice treat every once in a while. It was also nice to have gluten free soy sauce available! One thing, i wish they had squid kara-age on their menu!

    Saturday 1 pm Thursday I came around 7:30 pm and there was a line to get in.. it's a small restaurant.. could fit approx. 50 people. So.. I came back today to try it out for lunch.. and I'm glad I did. In this laid back atmosphere the service was very polite, relaxed, and as the lounge jazz and folk music played my wait a pleasurable one. I ordered the Power bowl. Plated quite modern and neatly done, a row of each raw tuna, raw salmon, avocado, cucumber, seaweed, edamame, radish, ginger and wasabi lays on top slightly sweet brown rice. It comes with a large spoon.. for people like me I guess who want to mash and mix it all up. I uploaded a picture of my mélange half way through eating. Wonderful! Overall the food is fresh, well priced for large portions, and it has many healthful (brown rice), vegetarian and vegan options. My bill was $11.50 for my bowl and green tea. I left feeling satisfied!

    My visit was awhile ago but I was generally impressed with the food and the service. My friends and I tried the Negitoro Roll, Rainbow Roll and Volcano Roll. We also got brown rice for all the rolls at no additional cost which I think was my favourite part! The rice didn't make it mushy, all were well formed with very fresh fish and tasted great. No complaints about the price either as it was reasonable with the quality of food we received.

I enjoyed a premium sake flight (which was fine...just fine), an old fashioned served with the perfect accompanying dark chocolate, and a good amount of sushi including their signature aburi style sushi in flight form and nigiri tuna flight (bluefin, chutoro, otoro). After visiting Japan last December, I'm a bit of an otoro snob but I have to hand it to them, all three of these cuts were perfect. The accompanying rice, perfection. The quality of the fish, divine. The view was the cherry on top of this experience. This will certainly be a spot I revisit next time I'm in Vancouver.

If you're wanting an upscale experience (and portion) of good quality food or wanting to impress other parties, then this is a nice spot. For regular eats, it's a bit too luxurious to be a casual thing in my opinion. The ambiance is nice and calm. They have a patio, which has a meh view overlooking the harbor, but beware of a breezy day. It will catch a bit of a wind tunnel. They have heaters and blankets but the heaters don't really reach unless you're sitting next to it.

But in other parts of the world the meal is what's important and so is a quick turn around. Guu with Garlic reminded me a lot of the Izakaya restaurants I found under the train lines of Tokyo in many ways, including the amount of time it felt right to stay. The food came out quick, the servers took orders quicker, and the alcohol came out chilled and as nice contrast to the hot food. Looking around and you see the hand written menu on blackboard surfaces on the walls and this feeling of authenticity. The heat of the flames from the kitchen can be felt and seen if you sit at the bar. And the flavors just hit all the right notes. Starting with appetizers, a section izakayas shine at, the first dish we got was their scallop and mayo pizza. With a crispy crunch on the bottom and crust, this reminds you of the flavors of a baked volcano roll or scallop roll you can find in almost any North American sushi restaurant. Just like that dish, it's important to eat it while it's still hot so it doesn't get gross and 느끼 에. Then came the yellowtail tuna "tempura" pieces. Thick pieces of yellowtail tuna flash fried for just the right crisp on the outside with slight pink of the fish inside. It is meaty without being oily or fatty. Great bite. The beef tongue after was interesting. From the color of the sauce it accompanies it you would think it would be heavy in flavor but it is actually light and citrusy. A good cut into the richer tones of the beef tongue. The yaki udon was one of the best I ever had. It was smokey without being overpowering. The beef was thin and tender and balanced well with the mushrooms it also came with. The udon noodles stayed bouncy and chewy which I didn't expect from being grilled. Very tasty and highly recommend this dish. For our final bite we shared a hot stone bowl of their pork and cabbage rice. With the hot stone bowl constantly cooking even after this dish arrived it was imperative to stir the ingredients together constantly for the first two minutes. It allowed for the runny egg to meld with the rice and the crispy texture of some ingredients was a nice bonus. All in all, I loved eating here and if my appetite was bigger I would've tried more on their menu. A solid place to eat with a great atmosphere, if you're looking for delicious food that won't take too much of your time but still lingers in your memories you have to check out Guu with Garlic.

But since they serve it in a broth, it does get soggy really quick. Still good, but after a few minutes its just soggy. The broth is nice with rice; comforting kind of meal. The unlimited rice/soup/cabbage is just icing on the cake. My dining partner had the Kake udon (pretty good, noodles good texture and slightly smaller strands than most places) and Menchi Cheese side - basically a pork meatball with cheese and deep fried katsu-style, served with katsu sauce. This was excellent. My original review still stands. Excellent katsu, plus they have the consistency and reliability. $28-30/meal and its plenty of food for 1, especially with unlimited cabbage/rice/soup. Restaurant is nice and comfortable, good spacing and not cramped. Easy recommend. 5/5.

Okeya Kyujiro is a Michelin one-star theatrical omakase restaurant, and when they say theatrical, they mean it! From the moment you're welcomed by smiling ushers in kimono to the closing tea ceremony, every movement feels intentional, precise, and elevated. The ambiance is serene and anticipatory. At the start, guests sit in silence as a black screen conceals the chefs. You see their shadows moving behind it. A bell rings, the screen lifts, and the performance begins. Dinner is a 25+ course experience priced at $325 per person. It's undeniably a splurge, but for a milestone celebration, it feels justified. The menu is seafood-forward, with many ingredients flown in from Japan. Each ingredient is presented before preparation, then carefully assembled and served directly from chef to guest. Courses arrive one by one, never rushed. The service team moves seamlessly in the background, refilling water and attending to drinks (available as an add-on) without disrupting the flow. The finale is a matcha ceremony, whisked in front of you with the same quiet precision that defines the evening. When the final sip is taken, the bell chimes once more, the chefs and staff bow, and the screens close. It was a beautifully choreographed dining experience, perfect for marking a special moment, and one I'd gladly return to for the next celebration.

I prefer a more intimidate and interactive style of omakase where you can talk with the chefs. This lunch also felt a little fast in terms of progression of the meal. Some of the dishes were very tasty while others didn't wow us. With drinks, we were quite full despite some reviews saying portion is on the smaller size. Our total was around $500 with drinks for 2 people. A really good experience for omakase, especially if you are looking for a unique experience though not my favourite one I've tried.

I noted how small this place was, and crowded, with the tables close together and a long bar with a counter and barstools there (also close together). Our reserved table was right by the front door - literally, - so every time the door opened, we got a gust of cold air (and it was a cold February night when we were there). I kept my coat on. Truth be known, I was not very comfortable. Also, it was loud. Very loud. I like how the staff shout Japanese greetings to diners whenever they enter but between the frequent shouts and the sheer volume of chatter from all the diners, all sitting close together in close proximity, it was kinda hard to hear what my friends were saying during our dinner. That said, the environment was super vibrant and, again, my friends said this was very typical of an Izakaya in Japan. Food-wise, I have no idea what my friends ordered. The menu was primarily available by way of a QR code and I had no idea what the dishes were, so I deferred to my friends' knowledge. But I can attest that all the dishes were DELICIOUS. We had some sort of Japanese street food "pancakes" (they were wonderful). We had some sort of stirfry beef with noodles (amazing). We had two types of sashimi (omg both were so fresh and so so good!). We had a few other dishes that I can't recall, but I remember I loved them. So.... the food here was GREAT. Service was also attentive which I hadn't expected, being as busy as the restaurant was. I really liked this place but I'll probably go back in the summertime when the weather is nicer as I was cold there, and I'd dine at an off-time, when the volume wasn't so loud. (I'm too old for the loudness!).

The toro was rich and smooth, the scallop was buttery, and the truffle lobster added a nice depth without overpowering the roll. Pickup was quick and seamless, and the food was packaged well for eating on the go before a flight. Portions are standard, but the flavor and quality are absolutely the highlight here. If you care more about how sushi tastes than flashy extras, Hello Nori is a great choice. Would happily come back next time.
