This place is authentic and reminds me of the nice Japanese restaurants in Hawaii that I grew up with. The food is fresh and everything you order is tasty. The sushi was very fresh but the bentos have my heart. I got the makunouchi bento A which came with katsu, teriyaki chicken, mixed tempura, sashimi and rolls. It had so much food that I had a whole meal for the next day. The only downside is that service can take a while but that was no problem for us since we were hanging out as a group. Little piece of Japan lives here. Such a great place fore some authentic japanese cuisine. This is the type of food you'd find in the smaller towns of japan. Mostly the same but somehow cozier. The staff are so kind. If you want to come here on the weekday there is typically no wait in till about 6:30. But in the weekend it's pretty busy. You have to be there right when they open. For this 1/2 Japanese woman, I say it's the best Japanese restaurant around! Chicken katsu is made with breast meat. Tonkatsu is made with pork loin. My mom, who was born and raised in Japan, and 100% Japanese, likes their nabeyaki udon. My husband and son like their sashimi. Daughter likes their curry. This restaurant is always packed - both lunch and dinner. You might miss this little place in the Safeway plaza near Taco Bell and Dotty's. Don't be fooled by the mediocre outside because when you go in, you'll feel like you've stepped into an authentic place complete with japanese decor. Service is so-so and can be a little slow. They're not rude or anything, just don't seem to have any pep to their step. Have patience, your food will be worth the wait. FIRST: Hours are wrong. I have tried to submit a photo to Yelp to have them correct it but they seem to not care. The restaurant closes promptly in the 8 o'clock hour. OK with that out of the way. The restaurant feels like you've stepped into a new world. They have no windows open to the shopping plaza, so the rice paper and wood light fixtures, sushi bar, and overall vibe make you feel almost like you've stepped into a family living room. The same people appear to have run this restaurant for many years. They have two lines of business - a fully featured Japanese menu, including daily specials then also a sushi menu that you use a pen and piece of paper provided at each table to order a number of rolls from. My dining companion usually orders off the regular menu and I usually order sushi. The sushi is OK, it doesn't "WOW!" me but it has always filled me up and been tasty, especially at the prices they charge. My partner's full dinner feels like a real bargain coming with a surimi salad (cucumbers, rice noodles, rice vinegar, sesame seed) and miso soup along with the main entree. This place is worth a try if you're in the mood for a family run Japanese restaurant with consistency over the years. My grandpa and his siblings who grew up in Japan had an affinity for Ikenohana's intimate style of home cooking, authentic flavors, the friendly faces of the staff who we knew for decades, and the warm sake. It's authentic Japanese home style cooking that's hard to replicate. They really should bottle and sell it! We typically go for their cooked fare. Their sushi bar has one or two chefs, and it's good but we tend to stick to the classics and haven't really ordered any speciality rolls. Over the years, the secret got out and lines form at the doors before opening, and the phone lines stay busy so it's tricky to even order take-out without a wait. As our family grew (15+ ppl) it became harder to have dinners altogether here because they just can't handle that volume and the service can be a bit slow - it's great for tables of 2 or 4, possibly up to 6. I will admit the quality has also faltered just a bit, and possibly due to the increase in grocery prices but it's still very good...for example, in the past, the sunomono used to come with small shrimp, and they used to give you miso soup and salad even with take-out. You'll typically spend $20+ per person in most cases, especially for dinner, and it's worth it, but if you opt for just an udon or donburi it's actually pretty cost efficient. Ikenohana was always a childhood favorite of mine so I thought I would bring my son here for date night. We arrived around 5:30 on a weekday and it was only about half full. I was happy to see that the menu was the same as when I was a kid and we both ordered my go to, Bento A. It includes a perfect mix with tempura, sashimi, chicken teriyaki, tonkatsu and tuna/cucumber maki. Everything is cooked perfectly with the tempura light and crispy, the teriyaki tender and the tonkatsu juicy with a crunchy exterior. Service was quick and friendly and our included salads and soup arrived quickly. The portion was filling and satisfying. Although it was my first time visiting, it felt familiar because of the cozy vibes of the classic/vintage Japanese decor. They have an extensive menu but we settled on Chicken Karaage to share and a Sushi Deluxe plate for myself. The karaage was light and crispy. The chicken was juicy and had a lot of flavor from the marinade. Like a traditional karaage, no sauce is necessary, just a touch of freshly squeezed lemon juice is all you need to elevate the flavor. The sushi was great too! The fish was very fresh and the sushi rice was seasoned pretty well (I prefer a bit more rice vinegar, but it was still good). This is a small and authentic-looking Japanese restaurant nestled in a plaza. The curry is a must order! My friend had the curry rice and I had the curry udon, both were so much better than Glico cubes! They were both thick, creamy, and filled with good flavors. The suki udon had so many flavors inside that we couldn't tell if we liked it or not. Ikenohana probably isn't known for sushi as there wasn't much variety in the rolls--definitely catered towards more of a western audience. Authenticious japanese food in the greater Portland area! The bento box is well worth your trip. You will enjoy a diverse group of wonderful food items from rice, fish, rolls, fried veggies/shrimp, and terriyaki chicken. Seriously, this place will blow your tastebuds out the water. Furthermore, the decor in the restaurant gives the vibe that you are entering into a portal like through the wardrobe in Narnia into a little japanese restaurant. THEREFORE, some people have commented about service. I think we need to accommodate the cultural diversity and recognize that what is deemed proper and respectful can be different. For example, some asian cultures don't want to bother the customer, so that he or she can enjoy the experience and meal. Recognizing some of these differences can help you enjoy this wonderful establishment. Chicken karaage was wonderfully crispy. I didn't have the ramen, but some of the kids in the party ate some.
