Let the customer pick up the materials, put it together... Might even look into buying one of their very nice looking kitchen sets... Quick update - I just saw another guy mention that the cafe has free childcare. Man, what a cool policy to have! I don't have kids, but I appreciate the nod nonetheless. You know these guys are Scandinavian when they treat kids like anything other than a death sentence to your social life. ---- So OK, you know that IKEA has swell furniture. They've got furniture for every budget, they can make your kitchen into a gleaming retro-European bistro, they could absolutely lay waste to your paycheck every month for a year if you let them, What I want to talk about is the cafe - the meatballs are dynamite, and for a furniture store cafeteria the coffee is surprisingly on point. First, the place is poorly organized and the entire time i was there it felt like i was a rat trying to escape the maze. After, finally finding the things i needed i proceeded to head downstairs, where you are expected to pick out the products individually. **note that not all the items/item number is attached to the thing you want to purchase. for example: if you are buying a bed, it tells you where to find the head board and pieces for the bed, but does not inform you will you need to purchase wooden planks for your bed as well. The customer service there is Horrendous! anytime i asked for help they customer rep seemed annoyed with me and was extremely uninformative. I made the BIGGEST mistake of setting up for home delivery and assembly because i did not have the car capacity to bring it home myself. it has now been 3 WEEKS since i was suppose to have my stuff delivered and it was suppose to arrive today between 1-5pm and it is now 6pm, with no delivery. i have been on hold for about 2 hours now trying to get ahold of someone who can assist me and have spoken to 3 different people who apparently don't have the authority to assist me. IKEA IS AN ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE, i high recommend anyone and everyone to purchase their furniture a discount stores or honestly anywhere else but here. As my friend and I turned off of the expressway and I saw Ikea sitting high and mighty in the distance, I let out a little "ahhhh" like an angel's choir. Except my voice sounds nothing like an angel's choir. We had planned to get there right at 10 to hopefully avoid the weekend crowds, but since there was zero traffic we ended up getting there at 930. No worries, the cafe was open... which actually meant the entire 3rd floor was open, which meant we could start shopping early. (Side note - I think everyone in Illinois had the same idea, because the parking lot and cafe were packed at 930. So plan ahead.) We came here with a mission, and we quickly found everything on our lists... and as always, a little more. We were in and out in less than an hour, which is probably my fastest Ikea trip ever. So everything was going smoothly - too smoothly. We found everything right away, what we wanted was actually in stock.... Too good to be true. And of course, as we approached the registers... my five star experience was losing stars. Aside from the self checkout lanes (which are a nice addition), they had ONE checkout lane open. ONE. The line was oh so long. Grrr. But it ended up moving quickly, and just as we reached the counter they opened up another lane. Um, I know I haven't been to Ikea in years, but when did they get rid of their plastic bags? Now you are pretty much forced into buying their reusable bags, and sure, they're only 60 cents, but I will never use this hideous and huge blue bag so I was slightly annoyed by this. Other than those two things, the experience here was pretty stellar. The furniture looks a lot less cheap than it used to, and this makes me happy since I could not afford the coordinating pieces for my bed that I bought elsewhere, so I saved some major cash on a chest of drawers and a nightstand that I actually like better. Ikea makes me crazy!!! I love it. I hate it. I love it. I hate it. You get my drift right? Huge parking lot and I can never remember where I parked. I always go to the third floor first and work my way down, but this can literally take forever on a Saturday. Which, of course, is when I go because I need the time to work through their maze. Their calorie laden food smells so good, but I mainly stay away from the carby goodness. Staff members are pretty hard to come by at this location. I think they too are lost in the maze that is Ikea. The prices can be unbeatable. Not on everything, but on a lot of items. Quality is hit or miss. Just because it's $1 doesn't mean that you need it or that it will not break as soon as you get it home. The carts have their own escalator. That's just too cool and I had to mention it! Love it or hate it, it's our Schaumburg Ikea and I'm grateful to be able to find just the right toilet brush, picture frame or Swedish meatball when I need it. read more

Came here on a Thursday and gave out a "woo-hoo" for not being crowded. Then I realized they are only open till 8 pm during the week. Boo-hoo an hour is not enough to shop for all the random crap that we need for our new crib. Come on people, it's the suburbs, is it too much to ask for to be open til 9? I was really dumbfounded when I stepped into this location. There are windows? They have light shining in indicating how much of your light/life you've wasted while in the store? What? The windows make it feel slightly less harrowing of an adventure. However, it still has the wonderful ikea maze that you could ever want. This location seems to run out of things (that I want) more than the Bolingbrook location, because I think this one is slightly more popular. Sorry, Bolingbrook. The parking lot wasn't as convenient as other ikeas I have been to, but ugh parking sucks always. read more

What I do love about this place is that you can very very very inexpensivly redo a whole room in your house at little cost. The picture frames and prints that you can find here the throw pillows, accent furniture and little candel holders, flowers vases pottery, rugs. Make it a whole day here take it all in, look at everything get your own ideas to start poppin out. Drop the kids off in the play room while you shop and concentrate. Take a 30 minute break have lunch relax, And start all over again !!!! Make your way down to the bottom floor. Dont forget to grab a bag of the MEATBALLS !!!!! read more

Since being introduced to Ikea several years ago I've always been somewhat of a fan. So naturally, when I was moving cross-city and into a space twice what I had before, Ikea was my go-to to furnish my place on a budget. This particular location is really weirdly laid out. I'm used to the stores that are two-level, show room and cafe upstairs, market items and warehouse downstairs. This store is a weird mish-mash of everything together and the warehouse somewhere on the bottom floor. I had several items that needed to be ordered via associate, and she was nothing but helpful through that process. Managing all of our items was a little tough but we pulled it off, and pushed on over to the pick up and delivery counter to not only arrange for the pickup of our "see associate items" but also to arrange for home delivery. $59 to Oak Park, same day, 5-9pm window (they arrived around 7:45). Delivery guys were nice guys, made sure to take good care hauling our Swedish goods up three flights of stairs, and even searched the truck when a small package of hinges was missing. Now this is where Ikea impressed me. It was stressed to me several times that if anything was damaged or missing I'd need to call the store to let them know. Before I even got the chance the next day, an associate had called me to let me know they were Fedexing me the missing hinges. Spot on! Great experience overall. And thanks to some ingenuity and creativity on my part, we have an apartment full of furniture bought at Ikea but doesn't look very Ikea. read more

I just had visited the store last week and wasn't impressed with the inventory. The store makes alot of money from cheap imported goods probably bought at a fraction of its price. Now thats why they can afford to have this gigantic store with a humungus parking lot . By the way , good luck finding your car....... I feel the store uses alot of misleading advertisement. I was looking to buy a bed and if you look up the pricing on the internet. They will reveal a price but not the full price for all of those accessories needed for the bed. They will just list all of the price seperately so it can confuse you into thinking you are buying something very cheap when it all adds up to like 600-800. Now I can go into the city at Cooks Brothers in the ghetto and get a full bedroom set for like 350.00. Okay , why would I pay for a less quality bed for 700 when I can just get a quality one for a little more. The material is cheap and it looks like it can break. read more

I have a love/hate relationship with Ikea. I love some of their items but I have meandering their store and going in circles. Also they have a children's play are. You can drop off your potty trained child and they can play in their "Enchanted Forest." This is all well and good if you don't have a strict, mean and uncaring woman running the counter while your daughter has no shoes on meets the height requirement line, right on the nose. Although my daughter's head is right at the line I was told she couldn't play there because she wasn't higher than the line. Maybe 1980's style hair is in order. My daughter meets the height requirement (is dead center of the line) but her head doesn't extend 1/4 inch above it and she is potty trained. After debating the height requirement I wandered Ikea for an hour with friends and none of us bought anything. I will not be back to this location. Obviously their rules are open to interpretation by the person running the child care area. Not only was my child upset because she was looking forward to playing there she moped around the rest of the store. Later we went to Crate and Barrel and bought some quality items for close to $200. Definitely one of the better Ikeas. It's three stories and filled with stuff. Some of the people seem worse than usual, but the selection and layout more than make up for it. Plus, the hotdogs afterwards were fantastic, but you probably knew that already. read more

Overwhelming, underwhelming, confusing, but not confusing? Haha at makes no sense, but, let me explain. First it took a train and bus + short walk to get here from downtown Chicago. When we walked in we were hungry and wanted some food. There was a lot of signs, but, they made almost no sense. It probably took us 15 minutes to find the food. First we wandered and then found the sign to the downstairs place and market. You'd think food. No. Hotdogs, soft serve ice cream, and drinks + a random tiny selection of Swedish market items....not a sandwich or chicken strips. We were directed to the third floor. Finally found the food! Obviously not a huge selection, but, that's fine. I got chicken strips and fries and my sig-o got the buffalo chicken wrap. Mine was hot and typical quality I'd expect. His was cold, the wrap chewy, and lacked flavor. We wandered around the store and saw interesting stuff, but, it too much stuff sometimes. So many things to see, but, hard to find specific items. Never really found the bathroom tub thing I was interested in seeing and took a while to find the shoe storage. Was excited to see the rugs in person. I am happy I got to see some of the stuff in person so when I'm ready to decorate our new house I know if I am interested in IKEA stuff. I'd suggest better signage, not more....just better. Better food quality - they say since you toss your own trash (which I don't mind doing) this helps keep the costs down and helps let the cook focus on cooking. I disagree with that as the prices are not very cheap and the food is passing in quality. Overall, not impressed considering how amazing I heard it was. read more

I went here for the first time yesterday and let me tell you... no other store has ever been this crazy busy!! Definitely would not recommend coming on a Saturday afternoon that's for sure. However, it was worth the trip in the end. The store is laid out very well, otherwise it would be easy to get confused. You can also look online before hand and create a shopping list. Had to stop for their famous meatballs and yes, it was amazing - so I bought a frozen bag of them to take home. They also have awesome cinnamon buns so I recommend buying those during your trip. IKEA has a little of everything. Furniture, bedding, pillows & covers, glassware, plants... the list just keeps growing. You will most definitely need a cart and make sure to bring your own bags with you in the car. Speaking of cars - you can't bring your cart out into the parking lot. So you really need to go to IKEA with someone or when you don't need a cart (ha!). There's a "loading area" for everyone to park and load up their cars. I haven't bought furniture from here yet, but I have friends who have and have had no complaints other than it taking awhile to put together. read more

Ikea, how I love you and loathe you... If you are looking for sturdy and reliable furniture- keep on walking. If you want kinda cool looking disposable (cheap) pieces or accents- this is your place. We have furnished a large part of our apartment with Ikea, only because we don't want to lug a lot of furniture with us when we move. Ikea is great to live with, but easy to give away or donate. Bookshelves, TV table, stools and dressers are great items to get there. We saved more of our budget for a sturdy futon, mattress and chairs. The materials are particle board, dowels and screws. I will also take this opportunity to say that Swedish engineers are sadists and possibly slightly retarded. It is a real pain to put some of these items together (and I am construction savy). I have to say this is the best layout of all the Ikeas I have been to. It is not as maze like and feels a bit more airy then most. No matter when you go, it seems to always be busy- but weekends are the worst. read more

Having heard about their signature Swedish dishes and impeccable interior design, my girlfriend and I had wanted to come to IKEA for a long time. We were pleased to discover that we didn't need a reservation, and could just come and be served at any time. I have to admit that when we first walked in, we were both somewhat lost. To get to the restaurant, we first had to go through a furniture store! Now, I have to admit that despite being reasonably well-travelled, I have never been to Sweden, so I am unfamiliar with the way restaurants operate there, but I can say with certainty that no restaurant I have dined at ever made me get to my table through stacks of lamps, desks, and kitchenware. There was even an area with a large number of beds of every size, which I suppose would be useful should you wish to take a nap in the middle of your meal (not that I ever have, but one must imagine it's useful to have that option). It seems one could spend their entire day at this place and not even get to their table! When we finally got to the actual restaurant, we were somewhat underwhelmed by its size compared to the 'furniture store' we had to go through. But there were enough tables for us to sit comfortably, so I cannot complain about a lack of space. Mind you, I was surprised that the restaurant is self-serve, but I suppose that's how they do it in Sweden, and I wouldn't want to impose my standards on a piece of foreign culture. It was easy enough to get the food ourselves, and seeing the options right in front of us helped orient ourselves in an unfamiliar cuisine. First things first: the food is tremendously cheap. I was blown away by how little we spent on our combined dinner (less than fifteen dollars on three courses, coffee, and dessert)! I must say I am puzzled as to why this restaurant has a two dollar sign rating here on Yelp, because it was much easier on our wallets than even the most budget places here in Chicago, let alone finer foreign establishments as I understand IKEA to be. I was disappointed to see no wine list, nor did I see signs that this restaurant was BYOB, so, unfortunately, my girlfriend and I could not try Swedish wine to go with my lingonberry meatballs and her white bean soup and macaroni and cheese. But as to the food itself, I have to say that it was rather tasty -- although my meatballs did have the impression of having come from a bag and not being made fresh at the restaurant. However, I doubt that a restaurant with the reputation of IKEA would risk serving its patrons with anything other than fresh ingredients, so I'm sure it's just my taste palate's lack of familiarity with Swedish cuisine. In terms of decor, the interior was fairly minimalistic. There were photographs of Swedish architecture on the wall, which may have been for sale, but I didn't see a price. All in all, I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who is in the neighbourhood and would like a (very!) inexpensive taste of Swedish cuisine and doesn't mind the unusual experience of having to get to their dinner through a dozen decorative rooms filled with furniture. read more

Wow! Where to start. My daughter is moving back home and wanted an Ikea bed so we took a drive the Schaumburg, Il store. It's 80 miles from our house in Milwaukee, but it seemed like it would be a nice drive and a way to spend some time together. We arrived at the Schaumburg store and the adventure began. The place was an absolute zoo. Not only was it incredibly crowded, but the layout of the store is a like a rat maze. You have to essentially walk around a circular floor through all the displays to find anything. We eventually found the bed my daughter wanted and of course it was out of stock, even though their website said it was in stock. Some what disappointed, my daughter picked out another bed that was in stock. Now to actually get the bed we had to go to their basement (dungeon?) warehouse and pull the stuff ourselves. We already knew that the foundation slats were out of stock (how do you run out of the foundations when you have hundreds of beds in stock?), so we worked our way through the crowds, found the correct aisle and pulled the both the boxes just like the info sheet said; box 1 of 2 and box 2 of 2. We proceeded to the check out which is an adventure in itself with aisles clogged with stock on display and tons of people. The line of course was ridiculously long even though most of the checkouts were open. I discovered the reason for this was that the checkers at Ikea are so incredibly slow that they could double as manikins. Once out of the checkout, we head for the car, but wait! You can't take the carts out of the loading area which is a jammed mess. Another half hour of screwing around and we are able to load our purchase and finally leave. We make our way back to Milwaukee and unload the bed. I've assembled tons of furniture like this over the years so I'm not too concerned about putting it together. I unbox everything and check it against the inventory. Everything is accounted for and I start putting the bed together. Takes about 40 minutes and I get to the last page of instructions and it says to put the midbeam support in place. Wait minute? There is no midbeam support on the parts list and no midbeam support in the box. WTF? I check the Ikea's website and can't find a midbeam support listed. I look at the product page and see it listed as a part but it's not on the actual parts list. I look at their FAQ's and find this: "Q: I don't have the middle support of my bed. Was it missing from the package? A: Most IKEA beds require the SKORVA midbeam. This article is purchased separately from your bed frame and is communicated in the store on the price tag and product banners. You will not find this article separately on our website. Please return to your local IKEA store to purchase this item." Except of course this wasn't on the product sheet or any banners. I tried contacting Ikea customer support, but after an hour on hold gave up for the night. I searched the internet to see if I could find this support somewhere online and what I discovered was hundreds of posts going back to 2007 from people that had that same problem and apparently Ikea's customer support is useless. After this experience I can't see the appeal of Ikea. Cheaply made products at a cheap price, but an absolutely lousy shopping experience. read more

I like both Ikea locations that we go to one in Schaumburg is great! The customer service is pretty friendly. I prefer the Boilingbrooks layout more but Schaumburg one the one most convenient at the time and it works. We had to buy some kitchen items, and I wanted my lingon berries and I got it so I was happy shopper. My mom found herself a lamp shade for $3 how sweet is that? It's worth getting the family member card deals. I love Ikea bc the whole family enjoys shopping there and eating some affordable cafeteria food. read more

I guess IKEA thinks that since it is big, anything flies! Their delivery is simply inefficient, and if you call IKEA with issues regarding delivery, they conveniently wash their hands off saying that it is by a vendor company! Our delivery was confirmed for Monday morning; we kept waiting and when we called were told truck broke down so Wednesday morning, postponed to Thursday morning and then Thursday afternoon, still waiting! So 3 days in a single work week affected, no responsibility taken by either IKEA or delivery vendor. Another package from IKEA arrived by FEDEX, and when I opened it, the pieces were just strewn loose and the packaging was fully damaged! read more

I am convinced that the IKEA is Swedish for "you are trapped". Because the layout of this store can have you going in circles and can make you feel like you are getting trapped in a hive of bees if you're not careful. But if you know exactly what you want to get (online research is immensely helpful) just follow the map to your section destination and you are set. Be careful not to get swayed by the colorful kitchen towels or wall of kitchen accessories because that will suck you in the hive for sure. Don't say I didn't warn you. Weekends are for amateurs. Usually filled with IKEA virgins so you're going to get tons of families, slow-movers, ooh-ers and aah-ers. Not that it's a bad thing to go browsing, but IKEA, only having these huge shopping store meccas in certain areas will bring in crowds of people on their days off when they can make the drive in from wherever. So if weekends are the only days you can go and you consider yourself no-nonsense like me, just know that you will be driven crazy. That being said, I love IKEA products. Yes, some pieces are quite cheap and you'll probably need to replace them in a few years. But there are so many cute and fun things for the home that don't have to be expensive to be useful. I love their baskets (totally upcycled an old wooden bar set up into an entertainment center and used the baskets), love their frames (easy decor pieces) and I love the kids toys (great things to keep on hand for rewards). Over Christmas, their red and silver lanterns looked great on our table and mantles. Yes, lots of decor and storage ideas can come to life in IKEA. Oh and 75-cent bottomless coffee in their cafeteria? Super nice for a pick-me-up before heading into the hive. read more

There was a time in my life when all of my furniture was Ikea. Then I moved and found out, this stuff does not travel well. But what do you expect from a $25 bookcase? For what it is, inexpensive sleek furniture with a short life-span, it is great. But it's time for me to move on from assembly required to something a little nicer. I still shop here for some items - picture frames, guest bedroom bedding, bathroom garbage cans, dishware and patio furntiture are all a great value. I found a great, well made 8x10 area rug for a mere $17 and a sturdy side table for only $12. But other items are too expensive for the poor quality (I'm looking at you, couches!). I no longer come here with the intention of furnishing an entire room, but for a few accents, odds and ends, there are many deals to be found. read more

I had heard great things about IKEA from so many people that perhaps it hyped my expectations. We decided to make a bad decision and go on Labor Day weekend, I say this because we had to wait in a line for 20 minutes just to enter the parking lot and I guess this is not normal. Inside is impressive but hard to take in all the scenery with the 12 bazillion people that were there (ok, I exaggerated a bit but it was packed). With the crowds it was very hard to see much of anything. While going through the bedding area I was put off by the beds that were messed up and literally looked like someone slept in them all night, every single one of them was like this. Didn't look appealing at all. Comforters on the walls that hang so you can see them all had dirty bottoms from the mass amount of hands touching them. Each one of them was brown along the bottom from dirty hands - ISH! Checked out the cafeteria but didn't bother to order. Nothing exception for food choices and so crowded you could not move. Reminded me of school lunch, busy, loud and a couple of choices. I was excited however that I was able to find a product that I had been looking for, for years. Now I know if I need a replacement, I will order it online and save myself the headache. Checkout - lines are long and crazy. Waited 30 minutes to check out and my first item that rung up was incorrect to only find out that the price was wrong on the shelf, nice. They would not give for that price and I thought that was pretty odd and poor customer service. Can say I've been there done that but do not believe I will be back. read more

I can't understand for the life of me how this place has become a hot spot for tourists. I mean, you're coming from god-knows-where and you're going to a store in the suburbs that sells stuff you can't fit in your luggage. But I digress. I have been a fan of Ikea for many years and even though there are some things I don't like about it, I keep going back. It's like an abusive relationship! So, the things I like, super cheap, fairly stylish furniture and other household items. I particularyl love their bed linens and kitchen goods. They have a wide selections of most household items and some of them are really really reasonable. This is definately the place to go if you are on a budget or feel like changing your decor without paying through the a$$. However, there are some down sides to Ikea: 1 It gets ridiculously busy (especially on weekends) so parking can be a nightmare, finding a cart can be a nightmare and check out is horrendous. Definately go during the day during the week if you can! 2 You now have to pay for carrier bags! WTF? 3 I hate the way you cannot take your cart back to your car. The whole leaving your cart full of loot while you trek the 8 miles to the outer limits of the parking lot is somewhat unnerving. If I were a bad person I'd hang around there and steal other people's paid for goodies!! 4 Some of the items are ridiculously cheap, they look like it and last accordingly. 5 On the other hand some of the items are over priced. Their couches etc are just as expensive as Wickes or Harlem - without the guarantee or financing So, Ikea - it is what it is. A great place to go for certain items. read more

Time and time again I am drawn back to this Ikea and there is good reason for it. The store here is great - it's huge, multiple stories, and has lots of cool shortcuts including an "inner circle". Each of the upper floors are circular and there is a smaller inner circle lane available to cut from on department to the next. The folks are always friendly and seem to know their product really well, or if they don't, will get you to someone immediately. Add this to the great deals, selection, and incredibly customer friendly return/exchange policy and it's an easy choice for me to keep coming back. Some advice for city folk - you can catch the Blue line to Rosemont (~35 mins), then there is a Northwest Suburban express bus that leaves from the station non-stop to Schaumburg mall in 20 minutes, getting you right up the street from Ikea. If you're efficient you can make it to the mall in an hour from downtown and from there either walk or take a short $4-5 rideshare. read more

Strictly on home delivery, and not on swedish meatballs. The meatballs and their lunch is delicious. But they are the "comcast" of furniture stores. I cannot BELIEVE how they run their customer service!! YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS.. once you LEAVE THAT STORE, NEVER NEVER NEVER will you be able to talk to anyone in that store or anywhere in the company by phone again! We place a large furniture order for delivery. Then needed to postpone- there is nowhere to do so! Then needed to reorder- forget it! Then were overcharged- on what they call Pick Fees, which is a fee they suck out of you for "picking" the merchandise off the shelves, and multiple delivery fees. The setup fees are fair, I understand it. But they add on all kinds of costs. BUT YOU CANT CALL ANYONE!! EVER!! FOR ANY REASON!! If you are the type of person, like me, that cannot STAND struggling to find someone to talk to, this is your NIGHTMARE. NO ONE I REPEAT NO ONE CAN BE REACHED BY PHONE. It is endless recordings. Long lines, confusing layout. I have been shopping at this Ikea since it opened, and every trip is worse than the one before. Household decor items are clever and fun, linens are are great, furniture design/quality for the price is good. However, the store layout is claustrophobic, the sound level approaches painful, customer service is almost nonexistent and checkout time ranges from 20-45 minutes. Ordering on line is a good option... except that quality is unpredictable, best to see items in person, since returning anything is a nightmare. Huge, HUGE, YUUUGE fan of IKEA. We've purchased many items over the years, from food to housewares to furniture. Ten years ago we turned our smallest bedroom into a walk-in closet. We built everything ourselves, and it's still one of the best decisions we ever made. We recently added a bathroom to our basement. We bought a really cool vanity, sink and faucet there for the new bath. It is so cool and modern and very sturdy. We have also bought some great travel accessories and bags, stuffed animals (they have the BEST selection), kitchen supplies and even napkins with cute seasonal designs. We really couldn't be happier customers, and it would be a rare occasion for me to pass the store without stopping in to see what's new. read more

According to the Swedes, it's pronounce "E-K-Uh," but "I-Key-Uh" works for me (I was just asked to share that fact with the American public). As long as you can find your way to the massive navy blue and bright yellow rectangular building through the Woodfield maze, you can call it what you'd like. A life without Ikea would be unimaginable... First off, their ultra cheap lunches and dinners of simple Swedish meatballs with gravy and lingonberries are truly perfection. Although it's a food court, it's definitely an upgrade from McDonalds where there's flavor and uniqueness. Don't forget to finish off the meal with the Chocolate Cake! Gosh, I almost got so caught up on their food that I almost forgot about the three floors of what they are all about: Ultra reasonable, stylish furniture. My house would be plain and empty without Ikea, and I'd be even less crafty by not getting practice on how to build a box with 6 boards, a few screws and an Allen wrench. I simply love their personalized check lists, furniture displays and self-serve warehouse. INGENIOUS! While their beds aren't very comfortable and their fancy halogen lamps aren't very safe, it's all about the entertainment centers and tables. Oh and the most important part of Ikea...What else would Sweden be known internationally for?! I just wish there were an Ikea in Chicago proper...perhaps one day (extreme optimism). read more

Ikea is Ikea. By definition if you have heard of the place a few things come to mind: swedish meatballs, inexpensive furniture, swedish people, DIY putting things together. All of these are true - and definitely tend to fit into most of what makes IKEA what it is. However, another group of people will be curious about things that are baby/kid friendly, general food options, etc. I'm happy to say that in general Ikea is pretty family-friendly. The family changing areas on every floor are reasonably accommodating and provide a useful family space - something until recently wasn't much of a concern, but is now being much more appreciated. I also see kids crawling and playing in every part of the kids playroom-type areas and zoning out watching tv in the cafeteria, so I guess I'd probably also assume IKEA is reasonably toddler-friendly on that basis as well. I'm going to skip on the groceries being things most people shouldn't ever consider purchasing (seriously unhealthy and/or garbage mostly) and/or that one of the family bathrooms had a bit of a noticeably smell to it, and say that overall it seems to be more kid-friendly than I had noticed before. Also, their high end products tend to not mirror their cheap products and have very different experiences. read more

I absolutely adore IKEA. IKEA offers everything you need and then some. PRICE: ranges from super cheap to moderate. STAFF: very friendly and will go out of their way to help in any way they can. SELECTION: vast and expands throughout the massive three story building. They also set up mini rooms to showcase their products. They offer everything from bamboo plants to full kitchens to picture frames to step stools to baby cribs. PARKING: more than enough. FOOD: yes, they offer food. They have a couple of little restaurants and even a swedish market. CONVENIENCE: though this place is overwhelmingly big, everything is VERY well organized. Its easy to navigate and easy to pick up items that you need in the warehouse on the first level. I love IKEA and I think they are just about as perfect as they come. read more

Why is this place so hard to find? Did the create the driving instructions in Swedish? No matter, once you get here you'll be joined by thousands of your closest friends all vying for the same berry scented candle or faux bear skin rug. You can't help but pick out random crap that you otherwise would have avoided like the plague, because you know what? You see that its cheap and you think to yourself that you need it. That $.99 toilet brush will change your life. Aside from shopping come hungry and enjoy lunch in the modern cafe. Meatballs are always a good option as are anything tasty with lignonberries. Ikea is a can't miss shopping destination -- fun for the whole family ;) read more

Wow, the click and pick is a complete nightmare! Spent almost two hours trying to get some simple shelves and brackets from them. Not sure what the problem was. 6 different people helped or avoided me today until I nearly lost it. I would definitely give them a zero if I could. What a completely horrible experience. Unfortunately I paid for my items on line or I would have left but not sure if I would have gotten a credit so I persisted until I finally got someone who assured me it would only be another few minutes. Why send a confirmation that your order is ready and then put someone through this nightmare. Awful experience!!!! Now I have a $5 merchandise voucher for my time, some one else can gladly have it. Hungry one day, around lunch time, we stopped in at IKEA having seen it from the road (it's hard to miss). My first thought, upon seeing the size of the parking lot, was, "Wow, this restaurant must be really popular -- look at all the people here!" We hiked from the car to the restaurant, noticing people pushing around large flats carrying various furniture and household items. A little strange, I admit, but the sight did not deter us from getting in to try out the food. I guess there was a flea market or furniture liquidator near by or something. Kudos to IKEA for great decorating sense! The dining area takes up a very small portion of the restaurant! The rest is some kind of massive museum of Swiss industrial design! While we enjoyed looking around at all of the exhibits, we almost left when we wondered if there was any food here at all. Luckily, we stumbled upon the cafe near the framed art exhibit. I had the sweedish meatballs with lingonberry sauce (served with a helping of mashed potatoes). The food was, in a word, underwhelming. Oversalted and just barely not-warm-enough, I can only recommend the meatballs as a quick snack for the budget-minded. A five-star restaurant IKEA is not. Yet... I feel compelled to give IKEA a full five stars. "Why?", I hear you asking. I know, I know... As any competent chef would ask, "For what is a restaurant if not for the food?" Well, under any other circumstance I would agree, but IKEA makes up for its sub-par food with its passionate devotion to modern Swiss industrial design. The place is a monument to this underrated sub-genre of the visual arts. So much more space is devoted to artwork than the food itself that one must wonder if the owners and management are absolutely crazy (if not dangerously obsessive)! Yet it somehow comes together. That and IKEA gets it so right in every department other than food (decor, value, parking availability), that it is worth a visit at least. Judging by the apparent popularity of the place, I'm not the only one who thinks so. read more

Here is my 30 second review of Ikea. Their design ideas are awesome. They do the best job at making things work in small spaces. This goes right down to their flat-pack stuff most of which can fit in your tiny city car. Their innovation in functionality of furniture is beyond what you will see just about everywhere, at least on this scale. Their quality pretty much sucks. Most stuff is made from manufactured materials and low quality fabrics. So you pay for ideas and innovation, not quality. If you are ok with that, AND WITH DEALING WITH THE CROWDS ON THE WEEKENDS, then by all means, shop your hearts out at IKEA. read more

Yearly rituals: spring weight loss, throwing out tattered clothes, scrubbing down the grimy floor, throwing out another 50 lbs of paperwork, and taking the consumer pilgrimage to IKEA in the holy land of Schaumburg--the shopper's Disneyworld. Mostly I buy another bookshelf to support my tree-collecting habit. While all of the stuff looks attractive (with sexy Swedish names recalling some obtuse thin model), its not exactly THAT cheap for a lot of stuff. Yet there is enought there that is affordable for the fresh out of (or in) college set that there is essentially no equivalent. As I type, my computer is supported by my 5 year old IKEA desk, computer shelf, and nearby bookshelves while the TV in the background rests on the IKEA entertainment stand moodily lit by the floofy billowing IKEA crinkled paper lamp. Too bad they don't sell Swedish models (although I practically have one in my back pocket ;) Just be warned: from Chicago, the round trip is at least a half-day including line times. Make it a day and experience Schaumburg, our own little land of Narnia. read more

I love Ikea, it is like the H&M of home decor! Trendy, fun, cheap stuff. I would never get a couch from here or anything, but something practical that I need that I don't want to spend a ton of money on, and that I wouldn't plan on moving with me, this place is perfect. Like a computer desk, or guest room end table. And their closet organizers are fantastic! I also really like getting plants from here, no idea why, but every time I am here I come home with a plant. One more thing, please please please parents, I know there is a ton of really cool stuff to look at, but can you or someone you are with watch your children? Please? Thanks. read more
