    Chicken and Chicken & Waffles

A fine establishment and very nicely decorated for the holiday. Our server was very helpful and quick for our group of 17. Seems everybody enjoyed their food and I certainly enjoyed my chicken and waffles. Choco chips was a great addition to the waffle as well.

We were in town and I had a gift card for Ihop, so decided to try out this location. Well, it was not the best experience. The food was served lukewarm, but tasted ok. The gravy was the same as used on country fried steak. The eggs were a bit overcooked. Our server was not good at all. once we received our food, we did not see her again until she brought the bill. The meal came to $14. I gave her a twenty and she had the audacity to ask if I needed change. A 45% tip for mediocre food and bad service? I think not. The "ambiance" is that of any Ihop. I doubt we will go back to this Ihop.

Now I'm ok with bad customer service but Jesus can we at least get a meal that is all the way cooked ??? Also they give sauce out like it comes out their checks. 10/10 would not recommend.

    GRITS

Enjoy the food but for some reason can't get GRITS at this IHOP. Every time we go we get one excuse after another, even a manager(Lynn) inform us in Sept that they hadn't had grits in 6 months(LIE). The next week we were informed by a waitress that the district manager had taken grits off the menu because staff did not want to make them. The part about staff not wanting to make them is believable, but they want a good tip! The grits are instant & take approx 1min. 15 sec. to make. This IHOP in Charlestown, West Virginia is the only we have had this problem with. I don't like the potatoes

Service was great, food only so so. Small portions, lacked flavor, eatable but only average.

Jack was our server and he had a sweet young lady shadowing him in training. Service was friendly, prompt and knowledgeable. The meatloaf was well seasoned and had been griddled and covered in gravy with homestyle mashed (with small lumps.) The chicken and dumplings soup was well seasoned and with big chunks of chicken and carrots. Our small person was delighted that she could swap her fries for mash and had her choice of gravies. The teen was defeated by the enormous French dip and fries. He practically drank the au jus. Everyone was full until they heard there was a smith island cake (many thin layered cake with chocolate icing and white chocolate curls. Three forks made quick work of the big slice. We would happily stop in on our next time thru town.

They were all terrible. And the interior was trashed. Did not revisit for 8 years. Had heard its been thru several new managers and owners. Out of boredom and curiosity I went back. It was worth the trip. The interior still looks ratty, but they did install cute modern hanging lamps. The food has improved considerably. I had the Monty Rey chicken which I suspect is what they call their Monterrey chicken. Probably about a pound of meat smothered in cheese and BBQ sauce, which is not something I would normally order but they made it sound good, and it was. Came with a big pile of rice that also did not taste terrible. And a very short cob of corn and an OK but not great bowl of broccoli cream soup. Dessert was a generic slice of cake with cheap orange frosting. Not terrible, not good. Will never order it again. Service started rocky. The hostess was constantly busy with phone orders. And all the wait staff ignored me and the patient but unhappy lady in front of me. And the place was not busy, either, just managed poorly. Once I got seated they took good care of me, and apparently did well with the nice lady too. James was always checking on me and got everything I needed. My only real complaint is for some odd reason both the salt and pepper had a very strange odor to them. Not the shakers, the condiments themselves. That was weird. Never smelled that in any restaurant before in my life. Overall I was happy and since things appear to be running better, I will make return trips. Definitely not going back to any of the chain restaurants in town.

We walked in and were greeted by many workers, a clean restaurant (With an ACTUALLY nice bathroom {Shocker!} and a sign that told us they had FIREWORK WAFFLES!? That sounds amazing! It's a Normal waffle that you can upgrade for only $1 (I know I was being impulsed but it was really good) to get pop rocks and vanilla clusters in the colors of red, white, and blue. Definitely recommend that. After being seated I noticed that the staff were especially nice and came over to our table frequently. I appreciated that the kitchen was right next to us and we could see they were cooking the whole time with no delay, proving that those who say that they microwave everything are wrong. They worked the whole time diligently. After not even 5 minutes our food came out. As I already mentioned, we had the firework waffle, which was really good. The egg they gave us was average and the hash browns were pretty good as well. I also had a piece of toast with the meal and what can I say about that, umm, it's bread. While we were staying at the Airbnb right next door, we saw that the Waffle House was packed on Friday, but Saturday it was practically empty. We did come at 8:00 but still, if you come early you can beat the crowd. Apparently during the school year the college students at Liberty University like to come there so this House will be packed. "But as for me and my house we will serve the LORD"Joshua 24:15 says which goes along with the word house. I don't know but it felt connected.

There was only one choice available for the first two courses, and two for the main course. We don't eat pork so we both had scallops for dinner. The first two courses (a gazpacho and shrimp+grits kind of deal) were both good, but it was really the scallops that won us over; they were delicious. Walked in to the very small space and were told we needed to order online, so we got out our phones and scanned one of the many QR code signs posted on every surface anordered - two bagels, one with cream cheese and the other with butter. He confirmed he received the orders immediately- even before the payment had gone through. That seemed like a good sign. We waited and watched while he made salads and other orders for people who presumably ordered online before us, but didn't come in to pick up while we were there. Eventually he made our bagels, put them in cardboard baskets, covered them with aluminum foil (not sure why we needed that cardboard waste -- would have been happy with my bagel just wrapped in foil), covered them with paper towels, put them each in separate paper bags, and placed them on the counter while calling our names (even though we were the only people in the place and he had confirmed he knew who we were when he received the order). We took the bagels and walked across the street and got our coffees from the cute cat cafe with the friendly staff. Hit the road, and pulled out our bagels in the car. First bite was so bad that I tossed the rest of the bagel back in the bag... it was so crunchy it was more of a thick bagel chip, and shards of bagel stuck between my teeth like splinters. Certainly one-of-a-kind, I've never had another bagel like it. About 10 miles later I was hungry enough to get the bagel out and try again... this time I kneaded it through the aluminum foil a bit to bread it up first. It was still very crunchy and sharp, but there were some softer bits toward the middle. There wasn't much flavor, except where it was drenched in butter (and those bites tasted like butter, which isn't a bad taste I guess). TLDR, if you want bagels in Winchester WV skip this place and go to Sclafani's.
