I ordered the chendo icy, which is a drink that has green rice flour jelly and coconut milk -- one of my favourite desserts! on a hot thursday evening at 25 degrees celsius, we went to icy bar on kingsway and boundary for a light dessert. our friend called ahead and managed to get a reservation. we had no problems getting street parking either. the place was lively and the menu was extensive. after much careful deliberation, my partner and i decided to share a medium shaved ice with four toppings: strawberries, watermelon, mango mochi, and lychee popping pearls, served with condensed milk on the side. the shaved ice consistency isn't as fine and light as at other places, but our dessert, topped with fresh fruits and lychee popping pearls, was refreshing and sweet, perfect for the summer weather. we appreciated the self-serve water station and the colourful, appetizing icy treat. read more

Our friend wanted some tau foo fah after dinner so we headed over to Icy Bar. It's been a few years since my last visit here. They have two other locations (Richmond and Kensington-Cedar). We dropped in on a Sunday evening (around 9:00pm). The place was reasonably busy and they were playing Home Alone 3 up on the TV. Service is non-existent and water is self serve at the counter. The menu is massive with shaved ice, fresh tofu pudding, pancakes, hot sweet soup, crepe cake, plant pudding, honey & thick toast and drinks. Essentially, all about the Asian desserts. - Fresh tofu pudding with two items (E1) ($6.00) - M got this with mochi and pearls and asked for ginger sauce. I had a bite; it's plain and ginger is very, very subtle. - Fresh plain tofu ($5.00) - Iv got his plain. - Milk tea with grass jelly ($4.75) - this was weak for a milk tea. We asked for 50% ice and 50% sugar but the flavour was bland and watered down. Grass jelly and pearls were decent. - Green tea crepe cake ($8.00) - basically an Asian style mille-feuille. I had the wheat milk tea to go. It was not the best I had. It seemed to be missing something. I saw copious amount of powdered milk being poured into the container, and that was probably typically of many bubble milk tea places, but somehow that was a bit disconcerting to me. I've been to this Icy Bar location many times pre-COVID but now I'm finally review. My friend and I went in to get a nice snack to share since it was hot out and they had dine in open. At first we weren't sure if they had dine in because some chairs were stacked on the table but they were open. They had their paper menu taped up on the walls and now you have to go up the counter to pay and order. My friend and I got the Four Mixed Icy to share and we chose Coconut Jelly, Green Tea Mochi, Pearls, Fresh Mango and we added an additional topping for $1.50 which was Lychee. It came out very quickly, about 10 minutes after we ordered and instead of their usual ceramic bowl they put it in they put our order in a paper takeout bowl and a tray and the condense milk now comes into a small container instead of a bottle for you to squeeze, we had to ask for seconds. The shaved ice was so good and refreshing, it paired so well with the coconut jelly, the juice from the jelly made it extra sweet. The pearls were really good here as well, not too hard or chewy just right. The Green Tea mochi was AMAZING, probably the best mochi I've had with shaved ice, so chewy and the matcha flavour isnt too strong which I enjoyed. The mangos were ripe and sweet and the lychee was nice too. The have a variety of desserts and drinks to choose from and customizable as well! As I preferred something hot instead of cold that day, I was happy to see a list of hot soup sweet desserts. Wasn't I just bitching about not finding a good Chinese dessert place and how there would be a business opportunity, well someone seems to have taken this hint, just not in the same neighbourhood, but after being there yesterday I have a feeling many from Richmond may have come here to eat a sweet treat as well. After being in Hong Kong and China twice last year, and having some damn good desserts, I went back to my old familiar stomping grounds for these treats, and boy.. did they SUCK. This review has been stewing in my drafts for awhile, and after multiple visits I can finally finish this. Having this place bookmarked, I needed to see how this place ranks against the only true other two in Richmond that does this, and I'm going to say that this is really the new 'go-to', you can forget about those ones in Richmond. Coming in here reminded me of my days hanging out at bubble tea joints in the late 90's (early 2000's) where these places were packed, well deja vu, really... this place, young and old... where I saw the elderly park their car outside and take a big bag of take-out to their car... if they are coming here, and people are waiting outside for what looks like eternity, it can't be half bad. When you enter, and if you have any bad things to say about durian... do not come in here, there is a scent of that flowing through the air, and in these places this dessert is treated like gold! And if you love the shaved ice.. well this is really the premiere place for you. Whether you choose to build it yourself, which is pretty cool, or choose one of their signature select, rest assured you will be impressed if you haven't ordered, these things tower others, and unlike Mango Yummy in Richmond, the balance of ice to ingredients is way better.... way better! I think this place is a bit over rated. Had the Durian Milkshake and it was good. But when you get to the end its too much. This is the only place I have seen it where they have the Durian Milkshake. Also ordered the Mango sticky rice and at first I didn't want to order this. I wanted the mochii balls look alike and because we don't know whats it call we thought the words beside the picture is exactly what's it called. :-( Hint: Next time ask what it is before ordering. Was craving something sweet without venturing too far away from home, so we decided to check out Icy Bar. I had looked at their menu online beforehand, but was happy to see that their actual menu is a lot more extensive. We ordered the pick 8 shaved ice, Mango Pancakes, mango pomelo tofu dessert, and the almond jelly grass jelly milk. Pretty generous portion sizes. Taste is pretty average; I wasn't overly impressed, but it'll do when the sweet tooth has a craving. Best tasting purchase was probably the mango pancake, which actually contained a pretty generous amount of mango. Our total bill was over $30 including tip, which was pretty good, seeing as how I left Icy bar so uncomfortably full that I felt like I was going to vomit. The service was less than stellar; we were kindly given two flimsy napkins for our purchase, and it wasn't until we were almost done that someone offered my husband a glass of water. To be very honest, I didn't like my dessert at all. I thought it was poorly made. It was way too watey and watered down that I couldn't taste any of the coconut milk. I didn't know what I was eating. There were very few pieces of taro. There were some sort of white residue on the surface of the dessert and around the bowl, which kind of turned me off. I would probably stick to their shaved ice. As a result I didn't think it was worth six bucks, I would rather pay a little more for a dessert that is of better quality. I didn't expect much service, especially at a Chinese dessert place. Opens at 3pm, and the places comes with free WIFI, a nice TV (currently showing World Cup), a nice clean and welcoming interior, and a good assortment of, you guessed it, icy desserts. They also have some warm soup desserts, but shaved ice is their bread and butter. I've been on the hunt for Chinese desserts for a while now, so I was pretty excited to see this place pop up. They're already well-known at the Richmond Night Market, so I was craving the mango sago and shredded pomelo shaved ice drink an hour before we even got here. I came with a large group (8 people), and since it was still early in the day they had no issues getting us set up and getting our orders in. I knocked off a star because I ordered a strawberry chocolate pancake, and long after everyone else's food had arrived and they were close to finishing, the server came back to me and said they didn't have any. Seriously, it took over 20 minutes for them to let me know. Grr! It's a good thing their mango drink was fantastic. Other bonuses: they've got a pretty extensive menu: you can pick 4 or 6 of an assortment of Chinese dessert staples on a bed of shaved ice, or you can order one of their more popular items (mango ice cream shaved ice, red bean, etc.). They've also got the classic hot soups (almond, tofu, sesame), and an exciting selection of Durian desserts (which I didn't get to try). I'll definitely be coming back a few more times to try a few more things off the menu, so I hope they stick around a while! We came in on a Saturday around 6:30pm and there was only 2 tables occupied, so Yay for no wait time. We ordered: Mix 4 item Shaved Ice - red bean, green bean, almond jelly and coconut jelly. All for $5 And a Mango Slush - dh's favorite. $4.25 The shaved ice is not as soft and fluffy as other places I tried, the texture is a little bit grainier. The toppings were excellent and I like that they leave the condensed milk out so can control your own sweetness factor. The Mango Slush tasted more like a mango purée, not what we expected at all, the texture is smooth like a milkshake. It was ice cold and fill with essence of fresh mangoes purée. Okay, so we came to Icy Bar after an early dinner for something cold and sweet. It wasn't busy so we were able to find a table right away. We ordered the fresh mango ice cream icy and created our own shaved ice with red bean, black pearls and green tea ice cream. The two shaved ice bowls were massive, that's it. They both tasted mediocre. The ice is too chunky here and tastes very low grade, like snow cone level. Not much could be said about the service and the price is not worth the quality. I'm kinda glad one of my favorite Boba shops was closed because it made me decide to try this place out. It is one of the few places open past midnight, which is great if your happen to get hit with late-night cravings. Anyways, the menu is expansive, and I opted for a shave ice with mango and strawberry... I was told that it would be mango and strawberry puree, but was very happy that fresh fruit accompanied the dish. The mango was perfectly sweet and the strawberries were not too sweet, but I didn't mind that cuz the rest of the dish had plenty of sugar to make up for it. I added some mochi to help curb my Boba craving, and it was perfect.. Being topped off with some Vanilla ice cream made it even better!... Yum! You had four different choices of ice cream, but the vanilla really went well with this dessert and a small was more than enough to feed two people. Finally this place comes off of my list of bookmarks. The only reason I bookmarked Icy Bar is because when I see pictures of Mochi and especially FAT CHUNKS of it I MUST EAT IT! It's a typical Asian dessert spot with the music being extremely loud and full of unnecessary bass lol but it's very clean and bright. The menu is interesting with shaved ice combinations, bubble teas, hot dessert soups and mango pancakes among other things. I've never actually had shaved ice outside of the Hawaiian style so I was extremely interested in seeing what this would be like. Looking at other tables the shaved ice was HUGE and it was so confusing how each person had a whole one to themselves...I mean how the f**k!? My gf and I shared a shaved ice with 4 toppings plus a scoop of green tea ice cream. There are a lot of toppings you can choose from like : Mochi, popping pearls, tapioca, and various fresh fruits which is nice. The best thing about this place is that when you order a shaved ice you get a bottle of condensed milk to use as much or as little as your heart desires. The ice itself isn't flavored so it's completely tasteless unless you douse it in the condensed milk but the toppings are quite delicious. The prices are pretty reasonable for what you get as well but all in all the flavorless ice doesn't really go with the toppings very well unless you're continually squeezing condensed milk on your spoon which gets quite annoying. I've avoided this place because parking in the area is a little difficult, but you can sometimes get lucky with street parking. On this visit I was with 2 other girlfriends who are always up for what I recommend. Having 3 hungry ladies at this place could be trouble. We wanted to sample a little bit of everything, So we started with and Icy with mango and taro mochi and red bean. It came in a tall glass yummy it did not disappoint. Mango coconut milk and sticky rice, one of my fave (warning the description did not say it came with peanuts, and when it arrived at our table it came with it) unfortunately we had to return it one of my girlfriend is extremely allergic. They were very understanding and replaced it. It was good the mangoes are so ripe and delicious, the sticky rice could have been a little more sweet in my own option. Mango crepe was ok. Thin yellow crepe wrapped around whipped cream and fresh mango. The original thick toast is one of my favorite childhood treats, this place knows how to make it extra buttery and they give you your own bottle of condense milk squeeze bottle (YASS) I can put condense milk in pretty much any dessert. We also ordered a tiramisu, it wasn't my favorite in the list of things we ordered but it did come in a cute little mason jar. Overall it was a good experience and we left in a sugar coma. read more
