What are the main differences between the lunch and dinner menus, other than dinner being $10 more for what appears to be the same courses?

Smaller portions at lunch

What time do they open on Saturdays?!

11am

Is this restaurant keto friendly?

You can eat keto, eliminate the rice! Can eat only meats and veggies if you choose.

What time are the early and late night happy hours?

Late Night Happy Hour starts at 9 pm until close. TOTALLY worth it. I forget about Early Happy Hour, maybe 5 pm I think? Just call them and ask!

Does this place have any MSG in their dishes/nabe stock?

They dont add any additional MSG besides what is already inside the shoyu (maybe dashi?) that they use. So whatever has shoyu probably contains MSG.

I've eaten enough hot pot over the years to know exactly what this place is trying to be. The…read moreproblem is that it feels like nobody here cares enough to execute it. The first thing I noticed wasn't the broth. It wasn't the vegetables. It wasn't the meat. It was the cleanliness. Water was spilled across the table. The window ledges were dusty and dirty. The surfaces around our booth looked neglected. For a restaurant built around a communal dining experience where you're sitting there staring at the table and surroundings for an hour or two, details matter. Then came the service. Our server seemed irritated by the simple act of having customers. I asked for a watermelon juice that was listed on the menu and got a curt response that there was no more watermelon. Restaurants run out of things. That's not the issue. The issue was the attitude. I was there with my wife and our two young kids, ages 2 and 4. When you're dining with little ones, you notice very quickly whether a restaurant is welcoming families or merely tolerating them. This felt like the latter. The food itself was okay. That's almost the problem. The vegetables looked like they came straight from a grocery store produce section. The broth was fine. The ingredients were fine. Everything was technically acceptable, but nothing felt thoughtful or memorable. What frustrated me most was the gap between what this place could be and what it currently is. Hot pot is one of those meals where you're paying for more than ingredients. You're paying for comfort. Hospitality. Atmosphere. The feeling that someone actually cares about the experience. Instead, I found myself staring at dirty surfaces, wiping spilled water from the table and wondering why nobody seemed particularly interested in being there. There are too many great places to eat in Hawaii to spend time and money on an experience that feels this indifferent. I wanted to like it. I left disappointed.

But still felt pretty reasonable for the variety you get. There's a good selection of meats, vegetables, and sides, with some items available on the rotating conveyor belt and others at the buffet bar. I especially liked being able to grab a little bit of everything and customize the meal to what I was craving. Overall, there was a nice variety of food, and everything was fresh and satisfying. They also have extras like dumplings, shumai, and other items to choose from, so there's a pretty good variety. There isn't free parking at the restaurant, so we usually find street parking and walk over or park at Walmart. The bathrooms also aren't very close and you'll need to get a code to use them. Overall, we really enjoy coming here, especially for lunch. Good variety, good service, and you definitely leave full!

But if you show up with 4 adults on a Saturday night when it is packed, you still can only order 8 plates of raw meat at once (akin to 6 very thin slices of meat per person) and a server you see again maybe once or twice more for the entire night. I would think it actually would make sense to me that they allow more orders to get placed at once (and just charge you extra if you don't end up eating it... like other places do) in times they are swamped, or at least up the portion per person (it makes no sense that the limit is the same for 2 people as it is for 4 people). It would have actually earned them more money tonight as we wouldn't have sat there hungry, staring forlornly at other table's plates but would have eaten quickly and left, allowing them to turn our table quickly. So yes, come here when they aren't busy.... But find another hot pot location to eat at on Saturday nights! Also don't come here if your kids are not height challenged. My 7-year old barely eats and is super skinny. But he is over 50 inches so we have to pay the full price adult cost for him.

Honolulu Hotpot Hale is a great choice and nice restaurant when you're looking for a more premium…read morehot pot experience than its all-you-can-eat counterparts. If you come with a big appetite, you might spend more than you would at AYCE, but the meats and vegetables here are very high quality. The broths that we tried were all very tasty - the Chinese Sauerkraut Soup is very unique - definitely sour but not unpleasantly so. The spicy soups have a strong mala flavor that will make your tongue and lips numb, but be careful, the "Hale Medium Spicy Soup" is already pretty spicy, and the "Hale Spicy Soup" is very spicy! Everyone gets their own pot and soup here, so you can order to your own spice level. We got a half yard of the beef toro which was nice and fatty as well as a half yard of the beef shank which was much leaner. Ordering both gave a nice balance between the meats. The seafood and vegetable sets are also well thought out, but you can always order individual items if you don't want everything in the set. There is no sauce bar - your soup comes with a choice of dipping sauce instead. It's usually not too crowded and the service is friendly and efficient. Their weekday deals are pretty nice as well, definitely take advantage of those if you're looking for a weeknight dinner!

I had to keep readjusting the levels, because my broth actually overflowed from the heat. My mom's burner turned off. The canister was out of gas and they had to put a new one in. The broths are $5.99 per person. Two people got the chicken broth, one the sauerkraut and I got the satay. The broths were a bit salty and mine was thick. Maybe that's why it boiled over. We came on a Tuesday and got a good deal. We purchased a yard of short rib $39.99 and got a yard of beef toro for free. It was BOGO free yard of meat mix and match. We shared the S1 seafood with shrimp, fish fillet, abalone and squid $19.99 and the V2 vegetable with cabbage, broccoli, chrysanthemum greens and spinach $9.99. We also got the V6 glass noodles and sweet potato noodles $9.99. I will say that everything was extremely fresh and on point. The food was really good, especially with the sweet sesame dipping sauce. The service was also great. While I really liked this hotpot place, it wasn't my favorite.

This time, however, it almost seemed as though they drastically altered their spice levels or changed something because our food tasted both different and nonexistent in spiciness -- not what you'd desire and expect when eating Sichuan food. We ordered the stir-fried eggplant + green beans and a beef dry pot and as aforementioned, both contained the dry peppers but zero spiciness. I know it's called a "dry" pot, but this is the first place I've had it where it was actually 100% dry with no sauce/oil on the bottom at all. Usually, I like to dip or at least mix the contents with the sauce/oil but since there wasn't any, the dish was just too dry and felt like it was lacking. The same to be said with the eggplant dish. Maybe just stick to the hotpot/broth dishes, but even then, I'm not confident. The exact dish I got last time doesn't appear to be served anymore; but a variation of it is, which is their fish in stone pot? I remember it being mouth-numbing spicy and delivering in the classic Mala/Sichuan tastes. Overall, I probably wouldn't come back again despite it conveniently located in Ala Moana.
