It was my first time visiting Ichiban at this Pittsburgh location. I found it because I wanted Hibachi and this was one of the closest places to where I was at, at the time. We decided to have a pre-cocktail at the bar before being seated. There seemed to be a lot of regular neighborhood frequent flyers at the Sushi bar and regular tables already. The Hibachi tables were starting to fill up quickly. There were also people waiting in chairs to be seated before we even knew it or finished our drinks. Probably around 7 PM-ish? As we were finishing up our drinks, the Front of House Host kindly greeted us at the bar and recognize that we were wanting to eat. We didn't even even say anything in the first place just went to the bar, so I thought that was a nice observation and that means a lot to me when I am trying to dine somewhere. He kindly seated us in the front waiting area and told us to wait for a Hibachi Table. As we waited I was asking others around us if they had ever been there before? Everyone *(more than four people), said they were always very pleased with the service, the food was tasty and the portions were very plentiful! When we sat down, we had the best table and someone was celebrating their birthday so that was fun! The language barrier between the chefs and the servers were very streamlined for the tables needs. Everything was "right on point". Our Server & Chef were both efficient and amazing together. The Habachi show was fun and interactive too. Sworn by others the portions were so generous for the price. We had leftovers for 4 days!!! The restaurant was clean, and the ambience was energetic. All of the food and ingredients were also very fresh and just a good experience all around. I paid 34$ for filet mignon and it was overcooked. I ordered it medium and it was cooked more than well done. I had trouble swallowing it and it was so dry. Very poor experience.... There was zero engagement by the hibachi chef. The steak was fatty. Drinks were not refilled. Way too much rice and noodles. They didn't follow their menu description of hibachi. They gave themselves a 17% tip on a party of 5. Was dark, not very clean. I will not be back for a long time. The customer service support is terrible whenever the whoever did my order did not properly close the cup making it leak everywhere I asked for a remake of the food and he denied and he treated me very rude and even call me racist names in Chinese thinking I didn't understand because I'm black. read more

We did not do hibachi, just sat in regular dining room. Service was good. I had steak teriyaki with fried rice. It also came with soup and salad. I really liked the steak. I LOVED the salad. Most places are cheap with the ginger dressing but not the case here! My mom had the chicken teriyaki and she enjoyed it. Portions are huge. I visited here for a birthday dinner. Our server was very prompt with drinks. The restaurant is very pretty and I was happy to be at a hibachi table. The hibachi-ER (no idea what the term is ) chef was a lot of fun and seemed to know what he was doing. As I'm working on eating healthy, I stuck to hibachi chicken with noodles and extra vegetables. Everything was delicious and it was hard to keep myself from drinking my yum yum sauce. Portions were huge! We really enjoyed our dinner even though we were sat with rather rude people. I have never been at a worse restaurant for service and manners. For people coming from China or Japan usually they're very gracious and have extraordinary manners these people here since I've been coming are the absolute worst male and female all of them including the owner and manager, they don't give a crap about what you think. I was trying to complain to the manager about the waiters and waitresses having terrible manners, forgetting what you wanted no smile no graciousness no is that all right? Can I help you with anything else? Nothing like that they act like they're so busy but the police is really never that busy and tonight there happened to be a lot of waiters and waitresses around the manager himself said I'm busy what is that you need? I said I want to complain and he said oh thank you after I told him that the waitress was horrible. I said your manners are worse than American so I'd rather go to an American restaurant you get waiters and waitresses who smile and see what can I help you with and try to please you for that tip do not come here. I told him I'm never coming here again horrible manners none it's very strange. Something is going on in the new Japan and China. They do not try to please. They do not try to be nice. I've never written a review like this so please know how sincere and strongly I feel about this place. Let me start by saying I grew up in the area so I have eaten here many times and agree the food is good (not great). HOWEVER, the man who owns this business steals from his customers and has for almost 10 years now. I just learned today that it is still happening after it happened to me and my friends. In 2013, I ate here with 5 of my girlfriends. Two of us paid with cash and three with credit cards. A few weeks later those who paid with cards noticed fraud purchases made on their cards to places including Lowes, Home Dept., and Macy's. We quickly connected the dots to the lunch we all had together at Ichiban. But who did it and how? We started telling our story to others and found someone who lived by the owner and said he is renovating his house. Hence the home stores where our cards were used - conclusion, it was probably the owner. We couldn't believe it. We never came back. It is also worthy to note that in 2014 and 2019 this place was closed for failing a health inspection - seriously Google it. Today, I spoke with someone who said they bought a gift card at Ichiban for their mother in law for $100 but only $50 was on the gift card when she tried to use. Of course I wasn't surprised - theft by this business again 10 years later. It's maddening to know people like this are still in business. Absolutely loved the food, the waitress, the hibachi chef and the quickness they got us in our seats. Kids got chicken and steak hibachi with a California roll. I got the chicken and shrimp hibachi. Both were perfect and the steak melted in your mouth! The portions were huge and definitely have to take a to go box which we did. THE ONLY con was a waitress who completely hosted me when I was asking to pay my bill. I asked if she could grab my waitress so I could pay my bill. Her response was a simple "No" and continued to act like she was busy. I asked her again and again she looked at me and said simply "no" I asked her about 4 more times thinking it was a joke and she literally said the same thing and walked away. Ichiban has a large menu with lots of options for everyone. Service is quick and friendly. I ordered their Age Tofu, Sashimi Dinner, and Steak and Scallop Hibachi dinner. The reason i gave them only 3 stars is because their hibachi dinner was not good. The fried rice and vegetables were salty and the meat seasoning was just alright. Considering they are known for their hibachi, i think this was quite disappointing. Other than that, their Age Tofu and the Sashimi Dinner were actually quite tasty. The sashimi tasted fresh and the cut was thick. It's still a good spot for dinner but if you are looking for top notch hibachi, this is not it. read more

Yikes, this place is depressing. You can tell right away that it used to be a trendy, fun restaurant that probably served quality food back in the day, but now the vibe is stale and the food is mediocre. The calamari appetizer was so bad that we literally laughed when they brought it to the table. For $12.99, you got about 10 of the skinniest pieces of calamari I've ever seen thrown on a bed of wilted iceberg lettuce. We kept debating on whether or not there was any actual calamari underneath the fried breading. However, their hot sake was a bargain, so that made up for the overpriced appetizer a bit. Then our sushi for two platter came, which actually wasn't bad. It wasn't the freshest or most flavorful sushi I've ever had, but it was ok. Our waiter was a perfectly fine young man who brought out our food and asked us how it was--no more, no less. The best part of our dining experience was actually the fancy disposable napkins--they inexplicably spared no expense on those! The two Chinese hosts acted like bouncers, angrily making people sit down in a row and wait for tables in the 'regular dining section' (i.e. not hibachi) even though there were plenty of tables open back there. I can understand not wanting to overwhelm the chef, but the sushi roll making guy was just standing there doing nothing, and if the host had asked if we were only ordering rolls, we could've sat down and ordered. I went here for lunch recently after I had been craving hibachi for some time. The atmosphere and service was pretty standard for a hibachi joint. We started off with salad and soup. The salad was one of the better ones I have had at a hibachi place. Specifically, the dressing really stood out and had a great flavor. The soup was pretty average. For my meal I went with filet and scallops. They give you both rice and noodles as sides which I thought would be great. The rice was really good and I could have eaten a lot more. The noodles however were doused in teriyaki sauce which made them overly slimy and not appetizing. The overuse of teriyaki sauce was a theme throughout the rest of the food being cooked. Almost everything, including the meats were slathered in a thick teriyaki sauce. This caused everything to taste the same and created a pretty gross texture of the food. My scallops were decent. My steak was pretty good, however it was over cooked for medium rare. With so many good hibachi places around, I would probably avoid this one. read more

Came here tonight to order a takeout order of crab rangoon. I crave crab rangoon literally every day (I'm a crab rangoon connoisseur), and I remember it being pretty decent here a while ago so I wanted to give it another try. It was just like I remember, really good! I rarely ever crave hibachi because it's so expensive, but when I do decide to get it I like to go for lunch prices. The sushi is pretty good here too. In my opinion, Ichiban is "just ok". I have been here several times for sushi or hibachi and I am never impressed. I have been to several other ichiban locations as well, and they are all pretty much the same. The food is your typical hibachi restaurant. Sushi is pretty decent but nothing special. They are accommodating to large groups, which is always a plus. I'd say ichiban could use a good cleaning though. The floors always seem dirty and the restaurant itself is very dark. More lighting would be nice. The best thing about ichiban is their lunch specials. You can get a ton of food for a really low price. I can never finish my meal and always have to take it home. Although ichiban isn't my favorite sushi/hibachi place, I'm sure I'll be back as it is rather convenient. read more
