As a last minute decision my husband and I decided to finally try this place out. Being that we can be picky of our Asian food, this place was pretty good. The shrimps are always my go-to and they had good flavor. The pepper steak was very tender and of course we always have to get noodles which had great flavor. The sushi however was our least favorite. The rice isn't "sushi rice" which is ok, but like I said we are picky with our food. Lastly can't leave out the tiramisu cake they have, my favorite by far. Is this the best Chinese restaurant in town? Good heavens, no! But it may be the best in the buffet class, rivalling the Grand Pacific, though without the crowds, the noise, and the shrieking urchins. Good food throughout, regularly freshened. A small but nice salad bar (better than the Grand Pacific's). Others are right to lament the relative want of vegetables on he bar. But I do like their asparagus and their green beans. Favourites of mine include two or three of their chicken dishes...beef & peppers...their hot & sour soup (a tad too hot for my own very tame tastes, but a lovely flavour). One nice touch: on the bar, a big bowl of fresh chopped green onions to sprinkle on soup or other dishes--Ichiban's deep-fried shrimp is my #1 and gets a whack of those onions. There are a few regrettable things--not bad, really, so much as just ordinary. The "crab Rangoon" has been nowhere near either Rangoon or any species of crustacean. For dessert you can have fruit. Mostly canned. Ice cream in dixie cups. And regrettably commercial chocolate pudding. But then, we don't go to these places for dessert, do we? Here's one thing that needs to be remedied forthwith...Servers issue one big paper napkin to start, and bring lots of smaller diner-style serviettes on request. Good so far. But the last four times we've been, the big napkins have REEKED with an aroma that I'm pretty confident is mould. Yuck! My guess is that it's a storage issue. GOOD service. We recently dined here with another couple, and unfortunately our experience left us very disappointed. When my wife placed her order, she specifically pointed to the items she wanted on the menu. That section of the menu clearly states that each meat is a 1/2-pound serving and that you must order two meats. Based on the menu, she ordered two 1/2-pound meats. Nothing during the meal indicated there was a problem. It wasn't until the bill arrived that we discovered we had been charged for twice the amount we ordered. Unknown to us, the order had been entered as double portions, and we were billed accordingly. The exact same thing happened to the other couple dining with us. We explained the situation at checkout. Our waitress acknowledged that it was a "miscommunication," but the cashier refused to correct the bill. I respectfully disagree that it was a miscommunication on our part. We ordered exactly as the menu described, and my wife even pointed to the specific items she wanted. If there was a misunderstanding, it occurred after we placed our order--not with what we requested. I paid the bill because it was obvious we weren't going to reach a resolution, and I wasn't interested in beating my head against the wall any further. What disappointed me most wasn't the ordering mistake--mistakes happen. It was that the restaurant acknowledged the mistake but still expected us to pay for food we never intended to order. Good customer service is measured by how a business handles situations like this, and in our case, they chose not to make it right. Wow, is all I can say, and I mean wow, as in absolutely shockingly TERRIBLE customer service and i didnt even put one foot in their door. I called the restaurant to get some general info such as cost and what they had to offer, the women who answered my call, answered with a dismal down and out, bummed out, Hello, as if she could could care less. She didn't even great me with the name of the restaurant, I thought I had accidentally called someone's house and some bummed out teenager had answered the call. I then, asked if I was talking to someone at Ichiban, she acknowledged yes that I was. I asked what the price was and she answered again with such dismay, and down and out reply. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I asked if there was someone else I could talk to and she said, "no". I told her, she lost our business, I have no desire to go to a restaurant that has employees that could care less about the place I am wanting to eat at. This was our very first time coming here! Absolutely nothing special.. nothing terrible... as of March/2019 one adult lunch buffet with out a drink is $8.99.. not bad! Staff was nice but they try to force everyone to sit close together and we don't like that so we always move. Some foods were WAAAY too salty but good flavor! Went around 5:30 on a Thursday evening. Got the buffet to go. The hostess was a bit rude and made sure I knew that the sushi was not included. The food was not very good. I got a little bit of a lot of things-- 6 with chicken, egg roll, rangoon, 1 with mixed "seafood", plus a couple others. Everything except the egg roll and cream cheese rangoons tasted the same and had no distinctive flavor at all. No spiciness. No savoriness. Just blah-ness. At home I added my own chili sauce to give it some flavor, and then my husband who can't taste much of anything right now ate it just because it was there. I usually don't like when Chinese food places drown their dishes in sauce because it makes them mushy. This place went to the opposite extreme this night. There was no extra sauce on any of the things I tried. So the food itself was dry, even things like honey chicken that should have some moistness to them. So this is the second time I haven't liked the food here and it's probably time to scratch it off the list. Been coming here since they opened. Sushi is fresh, Mongolian bbq is pretty good but could use a few more items. They continue to improve many dishes and the service is always great for a buffet with fresh drinks, constantly removing dirtied plates and friendly smiles. I only have returned to buffets after a first try, except for rare exceptions like Horseshoe or Goldstrike casino or Curry Bowl Indian but this one keeps me coming back for a fresh, hot and ready variety of dishes and they haven't stopped trying to improve on little things. On Valentines Day my wife had to work her night shify so.she wanted to go yo Icgiban, and I thought this would be a let down but it was very good here. Clams were terrific, sushi very good, crab good and most of the dishes I sampled were very tasty and fresh. Good job. I have no problem recommending this clean, friendly buffet for lunch or dinner any day of the week, and yes we ate here on Christmas day. read more

This is worst Asian buffet I have ever gone to. My husband is Chinese and we know what good Asian food is and isn't it. I got excited when I saw they had raw oysters but after seeing how dried out they were and smelt like day old fish i was scared to eat them. Most of the chicken dishes were hard and tough to eat. Let's put it this way i have never eaten a salad at a buffet but here i felt it was the safest thing to eat. We got here at 6pm on a Friday night so everything should have been fresh and full but it looked like some items had been there quit awhile. My guy and I tried Ichiban Buffet for lunch today and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Everything was so good and tasty! Loved the sushi and the fresh stir fry. The salad bar was fresh and had good choices, which was surprising because normally salad bars are an after thought at buffets. The egg drop soup was delicious, as well as all my favorite Chinese dishes. Hot tea was great and oh, the desserts - so many choices, including hand dipped ice cream (in a freezer). Very reasonably priced. Looking forward to our next visit very soon! We have since been back many times for dinner. Still so very good! It's seriously our go to place for dinner. I'm not much of a Chinese buffet enthusiast. I have to say this was above average. Offering Sushi and a Mongolian Barbecue station. I definitely love myself some Mongolian Barbcue hot off the grill. Outside of that it just has your average selection like every other Chinese restaurant buffet. But I'll have to say it definately tastes better than most of its competitors & offers a bit more variety too. My server was very attentive about keeping my drinks filled & my finished plates removed from the table as I like a clean table space when dining. Dessert is ok as the dessert station does offer a farily nice selection of pastries and ice cream. I like the fact they offer a few more flavors of Ice Cream compared to competitors. Everybody else so far just offeres the 3 basic flavors (chocolate vanilla and swirl) out of the Ice Cream machine. For what it is Ichaban isn't bad. I'd suggest it over many others. Wow, how much did they change. Since my awful 1-star review, they've upgraded their buffet lineup. That's how to take criticism. I had to come here twice to see if it wasn't a fluke. I've since come a third time. The quality is definitely way better than before the other two times I had in the past. I've tried talking to the waiters or managers, but they don't seem very talkative. It does look like management had been changed. They've got sushi, but the sushi is not as good as Eat Well or Grand Buffet's sushi. Their American Chinese is mostly fried, but what I like here is the steamed ginger-onion sole (sure it's most likely frozen, but a pack of that at Costco is about the same cost of the buffet). And then there is the snow crab legs on Friday, Saturday, and Sundays. Thank goodness for change! read more

So I'm editing my review to explain something. I only go to buffets at the busiest times because that's when the food is the freshest because they replace it often. If someone is going to the buffet at slow times, yeah, it's probably not going to be as good and that's no matter where you go. I only go to Ichiban for lunch, thus my review is only for lunch at Ichiban. From what I've been told, the owners of Ichiban are different from the owners of the now closed Red Sun Buffet. Ichiban has the best Chinese / Sushi buffet in the metro Memphis area, IMHO. What I find interesting is when I go for lunch, you see a lot of blue collar workers. Probably because it's fairly inexpensive for lunch. The sushi is fresh and decent. The buffet is hot and fresh. The waitresses may not know a lot of English, but they do know how to take drink orders and ask politely if they can pick up your plate. What I especially love about Ichiban is that they have sashimi on Sunday. Woo hoo! I know everyone raves about Eat Well, but Ichiban beats it hands down. Eat Well has this "I'm trying to be uber-cool" feel to it, but doesn't have uber-cool food. Eat Well's selection of food just lacks compared to Ichibans. FYI, at this point in time the Clipper coupon magazine has four useful coupons to eat at Ichiban. I would recommend using them, especially if you haven't been to Ichiban before. read more

While in TN visiting my best friend, her husband and their 4 young children, they took me to dinner at the Ichiban Buffet. As someone who doesn't eat meat, I wouldn't choose this place, as it's not particularly vegetarian friendly on the hot food side of things, however, my friends seemed to enjoy the meaty side of things and despite that if your a sushi lover, then come and enjoy! I find most people are pretty pro or anti buffet before even setting foot in one, and I can understand, it's a style that doesn't appeal to everyone. I'm going to assume anyone reading this review is pro-buffet, and take it from that angle. As buffets go this one is above average quality. They make all of the items in relatively small batches and refresh them frequently. Like any buffet you can find the occasional out-too-long item, but they do a great job of keeping that to a minimum. There's also a nice selection of sushi, again, just slightly above average for sushi but they put out a large number of rolls and only put out one of each at a time so they are fresh. There are very minor changes from lunch to dinner, and from week day to week end. I think less than 4 stations change between those times. I think they could do a bit more to differentiate lunch from dinner, but given the wide number of choices perhaps they don't have to do that. There is a full salad bar, and a full desert bar often augmented by some cakes. Prices are fair, neither high nor low. The staff is very attentive and friendly. I see how some might call it hovering as they are quick to pick up used plates, but I think it is convenient. There are not a lot of chinese options out this way, so it may be the best chinese available without driving a decent distance. You can get better sushi in town, but I doubt anyone would come here for a sushi-only experience. Grab a few pieces for an appetizer before your chinese main course. read more

My one complaint is that the waitress rushes you out and they are EXTREMELY aggressive that you pay when they want you to pay and not when you are done eating!! It was horrible! We walked in and it looked quite nice. However, the food was definetly not worth it and there was nothing special about it as you can find things similar at other takeout retaurants. We ate the food since we already paid, when I ways finished eating halfway, I had a stomache ache and imediately rushed to the bathroom only to find the bathroom smelling absolutely horrible! Then, as I came out of the bathroom I saw my mom and sister both dashing for the bathroom. They came out and we got home. All of our faces were extremely pale. Definetly not recommending this place. Ordered delivery through local delivery company. The fried rice has little to no flavor, and the sushi is over priced. My wife ordered a Shrimp Tempura roll and got about the equivalent of half a roll you would get at a higher end sushi restaurant for the same price. Total let down, will not order again. read more
