Great AYCE lunch spots are rare, but Ichiban actually delivers. The lunch pricing is affordable without cutting corners on quality, which is the whole point. The selection is solid. Plenty of rolls, hand rolls, grilled meats, and even some dim sum favorites. Service is quick, and sometimes a robot rolls up with your food, which honestly makes the experience even more fun. The lunch menu includes options like beef short ribs and bulgogi, but the salmon rose was my personal favorite. Every roll had a well balanced ratio of fish, filling, and rice. Nothing skimpy, nothing overloaded. The hand rolls were generously filled too. The dessert area is a nice bonus. There are puddings and ice cream, but the standout is the shaved ice station. Ichiban AYCE located on Yonge St offers such a huge variety of AYCE options. They have a few premium items that are limited order only but for the other things you can order as many as you want. Service is quick and they clean up fast which is rate in AYCE as they just let the empty plates sit there. They also had a salad bar and ice cream with loads of topping options to choose from which was personally my favourite! Food (4/5) - i rarely do AYCE sushi however was impressed with the large menu of items available including a fair amount of sashimi that you don't normally see on AYCE menus - scallops and octopus for example. Also lots of sushi maki torched sushi and hand rolls too. Of course it's AYCE so fairly average quality although they don't overstuff the maki and sushi with rice like other places do. Also lots of other items like Chinese, appetizers and dim sum. Service (3.5/5) - bit on the slower side mainly because it's a popular place and all of the iPad orders going at once puts pressure on turning around orders I'm sure. Craving for a variety brought my sister and I to try the Ichiban AYCE for lunch on a weekday. Pros: The restaurant is comfortably laid out and the ordering is done on the ipad. The restaurant will also validate your parking for 2.5 hrs. Cons: Keep in mind that the seating limit is now 1.5 hrs. We were not told this and just assumed we had 2 hours to eat, only to be told at a 1 hr mark that it would be the last food order. There is a small soup/salad/dessert bar that you could still get food from but 1 hr into your seating, they cut off your kitchen order which seemed a little unreasonable to me. We opted for their premium lunch for $28.99 ($4 more than their standard lunch price) because we wanted to short rib option. Disappointingly, the short ribs were chewy and overly salty. The variety of sushi is very limited with thinly cut fish and it didn't seem like a very good value. I would have maybe overlooked the lack of variety for sushi had they been prepared well by a buffet standard, but the rice in the sushi and the rolls was hard with no hint of vinegar. We had the upgraded lunch at Ichiban and it was delicious. The upgrade included beef ribs, bulgogi, and more. We got a nice selection of sushi, though the menu did seem a bit basic. The dessert and soups were really good because we got a bit hungry while waiting for our food. Also, the iPad was lagging after we placed each order and it took a while to return to the menu. The food is fine. Quite middle of the road. All things which are pretty common at most all-you-can-eat places. The sushi itself is pretty decent but the service is very slow. It also seemed like dishes came out in random batches (ie things that were ordered in the first batch came out in the 3rd or 4th batch). They do have a decent dessert and cold bar though. They even have a nice Japanese shaved ice machine which makes soft shaved ice like snow. They also have various toppings. This place certainly has staying power and has been here for a long time. It was also quite full so it is popular of sorts. I'd rate it higher if their service was a bit faster and organized. Otherwise a decent all-you-can-eat. This was based on their lunch menu. As an avid sushi lover, I enjoyed most of the dishes--typical of a standard AYCE sushi spot. Red dragon, green dragon, rainbow dragon roll... Etc Surprisingly, the okra stood out as a highlight, even though I initially didn't want to fill up on vegetables. One dish that didn't quite hit the mark for me was the octopus with wasabi sushi--it's likely an acquired taste. I love Ichiban and their Markham location is my go-to for AYCE but this was my first time at the North York location. It's quite spacious and great for small/large groups however some of the tables have a clear divider and a lack of privacy between the two tables. Similarly to the other location, they have a soft serve bar with soup, sui mai, salad, shrimp cocktail, seaweed & mango salad, and desserts including jello/pudding, ice cream, and shaved ice. The food in general was pretty good, though I do prefer the Markham one more and there is less variety here. Service was quick. They do have the robots bring out the food to you as well. The food was simply delicious! You can tell that the Sushi and maki rolls were made from fresh ingredients, it was so tasty. There were lots of new additions to the menu and the service was also fast. The only downside was the crowded area wherein people can be a little bit loud during dinner time on a weekend. There definitely was an herbal tang to the dish, which I wasn't a huge fan of, but the cut of the beef was good! -[WASABI OCTOPUS NIGIRI] 6/10 The color of this was greener than I expected :') In some lighting, it actually looked blue haha - the flavor was decent but the coloring of it was definitely offputting -[SPICY SALMON NIGIRI] 6/10 There was actally a slight kick to their spicy salmon which was shocking to me as 99% of places that offer "spicy salmon" literally has no spice to it! Went for AYCE Sushi at Ichiban while traveling through the area. The restaurant was quite busy when I arrived but was seated and a drink ordered quite quickly. Orders are via tablet and there is also a small buffet area where you can choose soup, salad, and deserts. Orders came out quite quickly but the staff isn't very cordial when they deliver, just plunk it on the table and walk away. I opted for the dinner menu to try their sashimi. Most all I tried was fairly good excepting the seafood udon which was quite lackluster with little seafood and flavour. Of note was the bulgogi served with steamed bao and the waygu nigiri sushi which was quite nice but you're only allowed one on your order. With regard to the rating a 3 may be a bit low but I would say a 4 is a bit high, so somewhere in between is fair. read more

Pros: -Sashimi is fresh, especially the scallop and sweet shrimp (scallop is available for weekend dinners only) -Maggi shrimp has good flavour -iPad ordering system automatically sends orders to the kitchen and you don't need a waitress to "approve it" -Self serve salad/fruit/dessert bar is well-stocked Cons: -All types of sushi (pressed, torched, nigiri) are 95% rice and the ones with sauce have too much sauce that's overpowering -Tempura batter is mediocre and inconsistent (some batches had very thick batter) -Dimsum dishes are below average -Very loud and crowded (many large groups, children screaming, chairs are back to back) -Floors are sticky and dirty (waitresses keep dropping food and spilling beverages; one waitress dropped dirty dishes all over my mom while she was trying to squeeze between chairs...) -Lackluster service (the waitresses look overworked) Overall, I'd say it's only worth coming if you can eat your money's worth of scallop and sweet shrimp sashimi. You can never go wrong with their dynamite. So flavourful and packed with avocado, cucumber and shrimp. This time I tried their sashimi boat A. It comes with 23 pcs (8 salmon, 3 tuna, 3 white tuna, 3 red snapper, 3 octopus, 3 surf clam). While it seems like a lot, the pieces are actually quite small. For $29.99, I was hoping to get larger pieces. At this price point, I would rather get the Sushi Bong sashimi instead, which is cheaper and you get more. read more

You can really get a wide variety of combos, boats and party trays here as well. I particular like the 32 piece party tray and love the variation of sushi in this one. They have quite a few options for boxes as well and they also have torched sushi which is becoming quite popular. I highly recommend the party tray a and think the sushi was quite fresh. If you pickup or do takeout they offer 20% off if you pay in cash. Another great incentive to come in here. It's located in the North York centre which is a great spot and right on the subway line. Easy access and convenient to get to without having to walk outside. Make sure to check it out if you are in the area. I know I'll be back to try the torch pressed sushi. Hoping to also dine in here as the ceilings are quite nice snd it has a beautiful ambience. For the range, quality and ambience I think this is one of the places I will see myself frequenting more often for lunch. One new thing they added since last time was a robo server that wanders around in specific routes carrying three trays of dishes. This is to supplement the staff since there are less servers I think. Maybe robot is cheap labour. The robot will arrive at your table and inform you which tray is yours. Once you take your dishes, it will drive off to the next table. And sure, when it first opened it had all this innovative stuff and torched offerings, so might have been better. But it's still really good! I love their lunch option since the price ($25) isn't too expensive, and you still get a whole bunch of the good stuff. Nesides being good at the staples, I like how they have lots of non-sushi offerings (my favourite are the salmon head and salmon belly). Also, their desserts are awesome. Having dined at a lot of similar AYCE places which also offer the same asian fare, this restaurant has got to be one of the places with the longest food serving times. The number of times when we actually had to consciously be made aware to wait for our orders was more times than considered acceptable. Their menu choices was also a little shorter than other Asian AYCEs. They have less sushi and shellfish options. What I do appreciate is that the individual adult buffet lunch rate is actually quite affordable. I also liked that they have a soup, salad, and desserts bar on the side. Lastly, just to mention it again, the automated robot server is still a treat despite everything else.
