Probably the best brewery in NJ! I don't know how I never reviewed it, we have probably been here 20+ times now. Great beers, lots of NE IPA's to choose from & it's also dog friendly. Staff is great, but let's be honest I'm here for the beer! They have recently been doing a lot of collabs with other NJ breweries which is cool. My favorite beer is probably Drinking Crayons and then they have the classic Yacht Juice and a lot of fun variations where they add some slightly diff hops, collab with another brewery, double dry hop, etc. They are relocating soon, so the space should be bigger and really nice, I'm just hoping it keeps the same laid back atmosphere and doesn't bring in a different crowd because the current space has a true brewery feel, warehouse/industrial, you can see the production area from the taproom. Icarus has evolved substantially since I first visited over 2.5 years ago. Icarus now is definitely one of the leading independently owned breweries in all of New Jersey. They have acquired an excellent reputation, and their beers are rated very well on Untappd. Nevertheless, I think they have some slam dunks, while other beers are misses. (I understand completely because not every meal I cook at home turns out.) My previous review about how they are a new, fledgling, but yet warm and welcoming brewery is no longer up-to-date. There are now large crowds coming. Many of them come from all over New Jersey and other states, too. To be honest - there are times I can't get a seat; maybe that's a good thing. I like seeing them get successful, despite the hassle of waiting on long lines at times and feeling like a fish out of water. Don't get me wrong; Icarus is an excellent brewery. Their cans now also have trading value. So, you can buy a case of Icarus and bring it up north to trade with your buddies for Other Half, Trillium, etc... There's something to be said for that. I have visited 94 breweries throughout New Jersey alone. Do I think that Icarus is the very best? No, I find other breweries to be friendlier, have more attractive tasting rooms, and to brew beer more consistently. But you cannot dispute that Icarus is now the favorite in NJ of many people, and I wish them well. I still go a lot. read more

LAKEWOOD: Icarus is a new micro brewery and the first of its kind in Lakewood (Ocean County). We were immediately greeted by Chewie (the owner and head brew-master's dog) and started with a flight of beers (includes 5 tastings - all delicious!). They have a nice variety of beers that you can also enjoy as a pint or take home in a growler (we loved the Sunwalker Smoked Pilsner, Valjean French Saison, and the ChewBocka the Masticator Doppelbock). There are 2 rooms to taste and relax. We chilled in the back room where the brewing magic happens. Back there, Brie was joined by at least 4 other dogs enjoying the rainy afternoon. We brought in our own lunch and you may order-in food as well. The staff is really cool and patrons very friendly. Your dog can accompany you on the brewery tours as well. There's nothing better than drinking a good beer and hanging with your dog! read more

We left Atlantic City and headed over here knowing we like their beers having already tried the Yacht Juice, what we didn't know was just how many tasty choices they have! I had to try "hungry like the wolf" based on the name alone. I was very pleased great summer IPA . Next up was Bang Kitty which I kept calling Drunken Kitty lol. Another solid beer choice. The highlight for me was the AK47 I usually don't like dark beer but wow! Coffee, chocolate and clover honey and macadamia nuts. Out of this world! The staff was so nice and well organized they made us feel so welcome and it's very cute and clean inside. And of course the Led Zeppelin poster won my heart !!! read more

What an excellent find! After moving from Brooklyn, we've been on the search for chill, delicious breweries in New Jersey and Icarus fits the bill. They have a sizable tasting room and a back bar, it can fit plenty of people (and dogs), all of whom are enjoying the music, the atmosphere, and most important, a great selection of 20+ beers. We're big fans of fruit-forward, sour beers and Icarus doesn't disappoint. They've got a nice range of IPAs, stouts, ales, and Berliner Weisses. We loved the Power Juicer and the Power Smoothies, which use the Power Juicer as a base and add a delicious amount of fruits. A flight of four will run you $8 (plus a soda tasting) or a flight of five for $10. They don't sell food on the premises but have a food truck outside, and you can bring food into the space. Lots of cans and growlers to go. We're big fans of Icarus and will definitely be back! read more

Great spot with lots of beer options! Came on a Friday night and there was even a food truck outdoor to accommodate the hungry which is always me. Will also allow delivery of outdoor food. Space was good thank k god for the back room because the actual room is a little smaller and narrow but the back room had some seating to accommodate the overflow. The best is that it is dog friendly so was able to bring our Good boy while we hung out to drink beers. Would def recommend this brewery read more

We walked in on a Saturday afternoon and the place was filled with babies on laps and kids running around. Couldn't believe what we were seeing. Must make for an interesting family drive home. Like another Yelp reviewer talking about a similar spot. "A day care center that serves beer". Or that scene from Sweet Home Alabama, where a stunned Reese Witherspoon sees her friend in a bar with a baby and says, "Look at You, you have a baby........In a bar! Can't you just get a growler for home and leave the kids out of it? I have never taken my kids to a bar, or drank with a baby on my lap ,but I think I get it now with these tasting rooms or whatever they're called, are all about. They cater to those parents who insist on including the kids and pets in everything they do. You know the kind. Not much in the area of people watching or scenic views. The picnic table seats look uncomfortable and does anyone enjoy standing at a seatless high table? But it all seems to be working for them. Too over-inclusive for me and my buddies. Maybe if they have a kid and pet free day. Good luck to them and hope no tragedies occur. read more

We stopped by Icarus in a Friday afternoon in December. We got there right at 3pm when it opened and people were in their cars (it was pouring that day) waiting for them to open the door. The brewery inside is kind of small with a few barrels with stools around them. It did look like there was a room off to the side but we didn't go in. There was a bar in the front and coolers off to the right where they had cans and some growlers. There was also different merchandise for sale. A good truck menu was on the table and it was parked outside. They had a good looking grilled cheese and on the menu they had suggested beers with it They had 10 or is beers on tap. We did two samplers which had 5 beers. I love their NE style IPAs. They also had a delicious coconut porter and another coffee style beer on nitro. They had various board games that you could borrow. The crowd was very laid back and friendly. Definitely a cool place that I wish was closer to our house! read more

They have great beer, & somehow, despite the crowds, their bathrooms are cleaner than many I've seen. Karmin Line, Go for the Gold, Yacht Juice, better beers than any of the big guys can ever hope to brew! Lucky me they are local too! You guys rock! Icarus is my second favorite brewery of all time. My friends, partner, & I go to Icarus at least once a week for a beer. The selection of beer is always large and they really all taste great. I have yet to find a dud in their beers. They always have a food truck located directly out front. So if you're hungry, don't worry they have you covered. I'm giving the beer 5 's because it deserves it. The venue could use some more seating areas. When you walk into the tasting room they have a few tables with seats and a wall rail to lean up on. They close their brew room now and then which offers about 10-15 more seats so it's always nice when that's still open. I highly recommend. read more

I originally reviewed Icarus by giving it 4 stars. This was maybe a year ago and as they approach their first year anniversary I feel they are certainly deserving of an unqualified 5 star rating. What happened between then and now? They are brewing beers out on the cutting edge. They are not afraid to try new techniques, ie different hop/yeast combinations, high gravity winners, barrel ageing, and new surprises on old styles. Their Kalashnikov series of imperial stouts and the new Karman Line double ipa approaches perfection. A year ago when they started out they were producing main stream craft beer. Good but boring styles. English Bitter as an example stands out to me. I know some people like this style but I don't know too many of them. Best of luck down the brew road guys. Great beer selection, friendly staff. The only comment I would make is, it would be cool if they put together numbered menus. Let me explain, My friend and I had a flight where we wrote down the corresponding beer choice number on our flight board. But.. when we went to sit outside we had no frame of reference about which beer was which. So printed menus or a website that include which beer corresponds to which number would be cool. Super nit picky. One of the best experiences I've had at a brewery. My friend particularly enjoyed the ability to get some of the beers as a slushy. read more

Another local brewery making their mark in the craft beer arena. While I have been here on other occasions a buddy and I decided to visit there last night to help celebrate their 6 month anniversary. The place was hopping and they had a food truck parked in front. All that is good but the beers last night were actually quite good. They also had 4 packs of Ella Ella available for sale (their first canning run, I believe). They do growler fills and have a flight of 4 beers for $10 (and a glass of their special soda). The staff is open and friendly and seem to be committed to making your experience a good one - so you will tell your friends and return. This place is "In Lakewood, but not of it". (something also said of Park City Brewing in Utah, but that's another story) read more

I came here from PA after reading all the glowing reviews on both here and Untappd, but it didn't live up to the hype for me. Maybe I left disappointed because my hopes were too high, but the beer wasn't as great as everyone made it out to be. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't bad, but it was by no means as great as everyone says. All the stouts from the tap list they posted in the morning were replaced with the NEIPA fad. I wouldn't mind these beers kicked if the ones I tried were great. I primarily came to try the DDH Power Juicer (Julius) because it is rated 4.33/5, which is exceptional and ranks up there with big names like Other Half and Tired Hands. It wasn't bad but tasted similar to a NEIPA you could get from any local distributor. The same with King & Country, an English Porter. The English Porter tasted like an average English Porter. The Helles Lager (Life In Helles) was the best tasting beer I tried, and I don't even like lagers. The beer was fairly priced. The flights were only $10 for 5 different beers. There is chalk on the bar to write down the beers you want on the board the flights come on. A four-pack of a 6.6% milk stout (Just Wing It) was $16. The bartender was nice, too. read more

Fairly new spot I had to check out when I was visiting family in jersey. It's a cool Spot to hang out. The staff is very friendly and clearly loves the beer made there. There are some tables and chairs with plenty of room to sit down. I did a sample rack because I wanted to try a few of them. I wasn't disappointment. ! The brews are delicious , especially for a fairly new Place. Usually it takes a little while For them to get the recipes right. They hit it. This brewery just opened its doors a couple months ago and it seems like it's going great with a variety of different types of craft beers. Lakewood has a large industrial Park in which numerous businesses and plants are located off of Airport Rd. Their Ella Ella IPA was my favorite. It whet my taste buds with its strong hoppy flavor. Two varieties were their Birdie Scotch Ale, and Singed Wing Ale, both of which did not do much for me, I sensed a bitter tang in both, but as you know as a beer taster, we all taste things somewhat differently, so do try them both with an open mind. There are two rooms for serving, the lounge with its benches and bar, including a wall menu with a non-gender restroom and the larger room for production and storage with a small serving area. The staff seem to be very helpful and into their duties. Having been to many breweries in the past year, I noticed two things different: Pretzels at each table for one's palate, nice touch. And their omnipresent friendly dog, who loves pretzels. read more

Welcome to one of the best breweries in NJ! Icarus has reached its 1.5 year anniversary as of this writing. That means they have been consistently churning out great beer for 1.5 years and it doesn't look like they have any plans on stopping. One thing I really like about these guys is that they do a variety of styles. You can get everything from a New England IPA to a saison to a Russian imperial stout. And what they do, they do well. The tap room is also a lot of fun even if it is in Lakewood which is a bit of a hike for me. But I plan on making the trek here a lot more. Although I am lucky to have a couple of liquor stores and bars near me that get their beer, it is great to go straight to the source and have the option of enjoying over a dozen of their beers on tap. They were recently doing a randall of their Milking It - lactose IPA through coffee, vanilla, and cinnamon which was nice. I've never had the privilege of actually going to the business. I was introduced to their beer oddly enough by the bar attached to the Shop Rite near my work place. They also deliver there (I'd tell you when, but I'm a greedy little thing). Oh my freaking lord. Their beer is absolute fire. I have legitimately never had a bad beer made by them, and at one point before I realized they went to the local grocery store, they dropped off a huge order to me in the freaking *parking lot* where I work since my home is near the PA border. We found this new brewery by chance and were very happy we did. Great location with plenty of space to enjoy a great variety of beers. During this Halloween season there are activities for the kids like pumpkin carving. The tables are made out of old large spools, which gave us plenty of space to take a seat. They serve flights of 4 tastings along with a 5th that is a soda flavor. There was food truck outside to get some eats we were full from the last place we went to so we weren't ready to sample anything from there. They had great beer selection and I particularly enjoyed the pineapple that had a little spice kick on the end. 10 minutes after having the beer I was till feeing the burn in the back of my throat. Easily one of my favorite breweries in NJ, if not tied for first place. Tucked away in an industrial complex nearby the Lakewood Blueclaws stadium, is Icarus. Often times walking into the brewery, you'll be greeted by "Chewie", the brewery's dog, who eagerly barks / wags at any newcomers (he's incredibly friendly, albeit shy). Patrons can bring their own dogs as well, if desired, lending to a really neat and chill atmosphere. As far as the beer goes? First off, anybody who knows me, knows that while I love craft beer - I'm kind of sick and tired of the trend of *every* brewery making nothing but pale ales, and ultra-hoppy IPA's. Well, Icarus is a breath of fresh air in that regard, simply due to variety and balance. No matter what your palate prefers, there's usually a little something for everyone, and I've yet to be disappointed by any of the offerings, with my personal favorites being "Sunwalker Smoked Pilsner" (a pilsner with a good amount of smoke, a fantastic companion to any meaty dish, or summertime BBQ), as well as the "Yacht Juice", a New England style IPA that's cloudy and full of a mango-like juiciness. Utterly delicious, and Jason (the owner and brewer) knows how to strike a good balance in each of his beers. I always look forward to anything new that these guys put out. A fantastic local brewery that has the know-how and creativity to really shine.
