Went back to Ibiza tapas for the second time since it has been under new management, and it did not disappoint. I really think they are bringing this cute little restaurant back from the ashes. The staff is very friendly and helpful as my wife is dairy free and gluten free and they were able to alter a few dishes for her. The food came out quick and was delicious. If you are ever in the area and want a nice meal in a cool atmosphere please try this place out. FYI the grilled shrimp in a chick pea puree is to die for read more

Ignacio is a genius. The coconut cream served with the fried chocolate balls is the best thing I have ever eaten. Truly an inventive and flavorful menu. I wish I lived closer! I'm not sure how there are so many mixed reviews. The place has fundamental flaws in the food and service I can't foresee under any circumstances having a 4/5 star experience here. The food was honestly and I say this reluctantly, horrible. We were seated by the soft spoken (could literally not even hear her) owner apparently. She did not ask if we had dined with them before or not. Nor did she introduce herself or show any sense of energy. I honestly though she was a hostess who was having a bad day. I won't go into the food issues in depth. In a nutshell, it was simply not good tasting, literally nothing was exceptional some things simply less bad as others. When the chicken dish was delivered to us and my girlfriend and I just looked at each other like are you kidding me... no one formally introduced themselves as our waiter and if there was team serving then that was not expressed. One bite to try it despite the horrible presentation as to not be a total snob. And it was settled we would have to send it back. 10 mins of waiting on someone to return to the table. Me being a gent I waited to eat for my lady. Now both have a food issue. I ask to speak to manager. Basically got yelled at for making suggestions was told not to lecture her. And to just go. Which I gladly obliged. The best part of the experience was the drinks they were actually pretty good.honestly felt bad. I don't go out to have a bad time or complain about things but bad is bad. She was obviously stressed out of her mind she looked like she was tearing up after kinda yelling at me. Way awkward, kinda unprofessional, subpar food especially for the price decent drinks also pricy so expected to be good. I won't ever go back hope I don't run into the owner in stop and shop. This place is the only tapas place I know around here...the menu selections are pretty good, I went there with my girl friend last weekend, and we order a lot of little dishes (Which is her favorite way of ordering food). Enjoyed the experience and my favorit was the desert that came around at the end... (awesome).... Ibiza is a great place for food and wine! I recently came back and had a good experience. The waiter was easy to recommend dishes and had good wine knowledge to pair the food. The ambiance is very nice, but it is a little cramped. A great place for a date or a group of friends. They serve small dishes and think about two to three are enough for one person. read more

Hm. Well, to start, I'll give the food five stars! Delicious. We got shrimp ceviche, some kind of grilled octopus over potatoes, fried lamb ravioli, and this amazing turmeric creamy rice with scallops. I would definitely go back for that plate alone. However, as for overall management id have to give more of a two or three stars. The restaurant itself is decorated nicely. But my boyfriend and I sensed some unprofessionalism as far as management -- after all, it did have a banner right outside that read "under new management" which can be telling. The music was constantly interrupted by commercials and the "bread and butter" given as complementary was pretty sad looking. I know it's free but, it was literally completely untoasted and the butter was frozen. I know these are minor things, but they really would make a difference if the owner chose to toast the bread and melt the butter, would look much more presentable and less cheap. Aside from that, we were a bit caught off guard that the menu online is completely different from what's in the restaurant. Completely different food items, and not nearly as many either. And more expensive in the restaurant by several dollars, so they really need to update that. To us, it seems like the people who run this are completely naive when it comes to business and management, but great cooks. read more

Second time here, first time indulging in the food. It was wonderful, the service was amazing, and ambiance was great! So hard to believe this restaurant is on such a busy street. Friend and I sampled 6 tapas: cod croquette, cod tempura, slow cooked ribs, hangar steak, pork belly sandwiches, lamb ravioli. I most definitely could eat a million servings of the cod croquette and slow cooked ribs; they were both delicious! The other tapas were just okay but my opinion of those does not mean I won't be back to sample other menu options. Oh, I also had a white sangria - definitely nice and refreshing. I've loved tapas since well before most people in the US knew what they even were. Tapas in Spain are an experience that's hard to duplicate. This is the closest I've encountered here in the US, the only thing that kills the atmosphere is the non-stop traffic on dixwell ave. For dinner my friend had the chicken main dish and I had the steak - try the gallo pinto! Both were delicious. The mango margaritas were sooo good! Came here for restaurant week and was not disappointed!. In short, food = good/great, service = not so much. Some basics were lacking-- for instance, the bf and I would have ordered another drink if the waiter had ever actually stopped at the table to check in on us (instead of plunking down a plate as he ran off to the next table). So yeah, the service was really rough but it was restaurant week so I'm not surprised. It was also super super loud, to the point that it was hard to hear my bf across the tiny table (he may have appreciated that he couldn't hear me though). The food though-- the food! So delicious and yet so room temperature... (even the hot dishes). I know restaurant week is hectic and they probably have hectic timing issues and food necessarily sits under heat lamps... but it definitely was the only major downside to otherwise delicious food. The goat cheese & truffle oil tapas was unbelievably decadent. The bf's duck confit croquettes didn't have enough duck in them but were still salty and good. The sea cream was perfectly fine (skin a bit salty but wonderfully crispy), and by the way the bf pounded down the catalan noodles, they were decent too (he said he liked the interesting texture of them). I had read about the aioli comments before coming here, and was prepared to disagree (aioli is so delicious, after all!)... but I actually have to agree. There is more than is necessary on the croquettes-- it almost covers up the flavors. So to sum up: Came hungry. Left slightly smelling of grease, a bit deaf, and stuffed with delicious food. Made the drive down to Hamden Saturday nite after reading all the great reviews and so glad we did. After driving by the restaurant twice (there is no sign and the GPS said it was on the opposite side of the street) we finally made it into this cozy little tapas bar. All tables were full so we decided to eat at the bar. While mulling over the menu we both had a Mojito. While not the best I ever had, it was decent. We then switched to wine and began a great nite of tapas. Pimientos del Piquillo -Wood roasted piquillo peppers stuffed with Valencian salad, saffron aïoli. Calamares a la Plancha - Grilled baby squid, tomato, mango, onion, pepper and shallots vinaigrette. Croquetas de Bacalao - Cod fish croquettes served with aïoli. Patatas Bravas - Fried spiced potatoes. Arroz de Setas - Bomba rice with wild mushroom, and vegetables. From the first plate to the last, each dish was nicely prepared and had great flavor. Favorite of the nite was the Arroz de Setas. It was prepared like a Wild Mushroom risotto and was amazing. The hints of black truffle gave this dish such a rustic, full bodied flavor. A great way to finish the nite. Service at the bar was great and we look forward to our next visit. read more

We stopped in here on a Saturday around 7pm and waiting about 10-15 minutes. The pitcher of sangria helped in the meantime, and the food smelled so good. The three of us picked out 10 tapas - which definitely ended up being too much despite the fact that we cleaned the plates. The standouts were the braised short ribs, the goat cheese and fig salad, the duck, and the chorizo and chicken. I don't know why this restaurant isn't crowded every night! I've been here three times and have memorable meals and really fantastic service every time. The food is next level delicious, innovative while feeling regional authentic. Tonight we had 3 tapas that included a lamb ravioli w sweet potato purée, mussels w curry and scallops risotto. The wine selection is sophisticated but everything is reasonably priced. Maybe the location is off putting to others? It is on a busy section of Whitney Ave across from a Home Depot, but honestly the interior ambience is so lovely. Great place for date night! read more

This place is GREAT surprise. Each little bite was a wonderful delight. Others have mentioned it but it bears repeating... the goat cheese with fig that is drizzled with truffle oil is sooooo good. the chorizo with lentil salad - sooooo good. The best way to approach is to order a couple (or few) tapas at once. Order things that are different, you will be pleasantly surprised - avocado and beets on crostini? yes, it was good too and I am NOT a vegetarian! The outside seating is really nice although you are on DIxwell Ave so there is no view and a steady stream of traffic. Too bad about that but the food does make up for it. The wine list is decent and would recommend that (as others have) instead of cocktails and/or sangria which was a little light on the wine for my taste. Service was very good. Food... Mmmhe. Grilled artichoke was tasty but tiny for the price. Piquillo peppers were tiny and cold while stuffing was mostly oozy rice. Meatballs were decent. Worst of all was the Tortilla de Patatas, a Spanish staple. It was fluffy and tasteless. It's supposed to be heavy with great olive oil and onions. Won't be coming back. Sad. read more

I love tapas and had wanted to come here for a long time, given the reviews. Actually, I wanted to go to the New Haven restaurant but when I saw that this branch had a Living Social deal, I went for it. In general, it was "meh", especially compared to Tasca in Boston and even Barcelona in West Hartford, much to my surprise, because I had expected this place to be better than that. On top of that, we felt it was very overpriced for what they give you. We ordered a pitcher of red sangria and got what seemed more like half a pitcher of diluted boxed liquor store sangria over a ton of ice with small bits of fruit in it. For $18.00, that was atrocious. We started with the goat cheese and fig tapas. I could have gone to Whole Foods and bought the same goat cheese with fig in it and smeared it on a piece of limp, dry, tasteless, uncooked white bread and paid less and enjoyed it more. This came with no oil, nuts, or sauce of any kind on it. Meh. We followed that with the Serrano ham. While the ham was good (all 6 tiny slices of it), once again, it was draped over that same tasteless, almost stale, uncooked puffy white bread with nothing else on it. Again, I could have done this myself. In my experience, cold tapas over bread usually comes on something akin to crostini. Every bite should be a morsel of heaven, not this. For our hot tapas, I ordered the sea bass, which was one of the better things we had. It was cooked properly and came over a nice potato vegetable medley, although I did not taste any raisins, pine nuts or mushrooms in my portion, just carrots and potatoes. I also didn't feel it had enough seasoning but my husband thought it was just right. I also enjoyed the piquillo peppers stuffed with sausage, which came in a bowl with some kind of sauce resembling thickened chicken broth. I presume the yellow color meant it had saffron in it, but to tell the truth I didn't taste any saffron. I didn't understand the broth because it did nothing for the dish, but at least the peppers had a nice smoky flavor. We ended with the pork belly sliders, which, although sliced very thin, were probably the best thing we had, but again, served on a puffy white bread roll that didn't taste like it was even toasted. At this point, although still hungry, we decided to call it quits because we weren't loving our experience and didn't want to rack up too much more of a bill. Thankfully, I only paid $15 for a $50 Living Social voucher, and the bill came to $64, so I wasn't too upset. If we'd have paid full price I would have been more upset as I didn't feel the quality of this food lived up to those prices. My husband, who is not as acquainted with tapas as I am, agreed with me that the food we've had at Barcelona in W. Hartford is much better than this. I consider that significant because while I like Barcelona a lot, it has never stood out in my mind as stellar. So that should give some indication of where we'd rank this place. I have a feeling the New Haven restaurant might live up to the hype better than this branch, but given my experience here, I doubt I'll be going there any time soon, which is sad, because ever since it opened I've been wanting to try it. I will give this place a second chance, though, as I bought a second voucher thinking I was going to love it. I might try some other things on the menu. Sometimes it's just a matter of ordering the right things, although I've had many similar things on Barcelona's and Tasca's menus and have loved pretty much all of them. We couldn't argue with the service, though. We got there early on a Saturday and our waitress was very attentive, plus the food came out very quickly. In fact, I think they were too attentive because the bus boy kept wanting to take our plates away almost before we'd taken our last bite, which is one of my restaurant pet-peeves. Although we left after 6:00 p.m., the place was not even half full, which surprised me. Then again on a lazy Saturday in the summer anything is possible, or it may pick up later in the evening. After we left we GPSed a Dairy Queen since we were still so hungry. Oh well, I'll have to give it another try. read more

Really 2.5 stars. The service was fine. But for tapas I would have expected way more. Most of the tapas were only enough for one person, especially for the price. For example, the bass plate was one small piece, smaller than half of a dollar bill. It was on top of piled potatoes and carrots that just had no taste. All plates had tiny portions of the meat and seafood that you order the plate for in the first place..... and the veg platter was just basic eggplant and squash on a plate.... No flavor.... Just seems like no effort was put into making anything, basic 5 minute dinner I could have made at home, aside from the sauces they provide. Those were good. But, not worth the $ at all. Go to Barcelona in New Haven, you get a bang of amazing food for your buck and the atmosphere is awesome. Service is superb too. read more

Maybe an off night, but disappointed today. Ordered 7 plates and they tried to deliver all at once. I shouldn't have to tell a Tapas place to space it a little. Then they held the rest (put under the heat lamp). 4 of 7 were sub-par: too much salt or burnt toast. And the place was nearly EMPTY. Have had great meals here before, so I may give them a pass, but am just going to try the bar next time for one or two plates before investing again. read more

Our waiter was very nice. The food was decent and the drinks were strong. I felt it was a bit overpriced for the area, however it's a surprisingly nice spot once you're inside. Once we finally received our food it was excellent. We waited for an hour to receive our first tapa (bread) and when we asked about it we were dismissed. Tables who arrived far later than us received food, while it seemed we were being purposely avoided. Servers would just walk by, without stopping to apologize or explain the delay. Once we started to receive food it came one right after the other. We were also not allowed to keep a menu at our table for future ordering and the lady who appeared to be in charge very rudely forced it away from us. Once we were done with our tapas we paid and were finishing our drinks when were asked to hurry and leave because someone had been waiting for our table for an hour. With much anticipation my husband and I went to Ibiza for restaurant week in Hamden last night. While prepared for a delicious meal after all the positive reviews, I'm sorry to say the meal was mediocre, the service rushed, and the atmosphere noisy and not conducive to a good dining experience. We had 10 dishes and none were memorable. The spinach dish tasted like glue, the duck confit croquettes tasted like mashed potatoes with no trace of duck flavor, the fired Catalan noodles were odd. We normally love tapas but this was decidedly inferior to the other places we have had them (including on the Iberian peninsula.) That combined with nearly all the dishes being served all at once led to a great disappointment. The one thing I can recommend is the white Sangria which was delicious - maybe I should have had more. . . read more

If you like rules, this is the place for you. I went to this restaurant this past Friday evening, Feb. 24, 2012. There is the rule that everyone must be present in the party to be seated. It did not matter that there was room in the restaurant but very little in the bar where we were standing or that the majority of our party was there, or that we said we would be ordering food while we waited to pay for our table. Then there is the rule, as the hostess gleefully and triumphantly informed us, that all the tapas must be decided on and ordered at once. The tapas we received were good but small and we did want to order more but were afraid to because of the no order again rule dictated by the hostess. Overall, the food was good, but small and pricey. The hostess would have created a lot of good will, if she had told us under crowded conditions these were the rules but under the circumstances she could bend them. I would not eat here again because when I eat out I like to enjoy myself and not be hassled. read more

Went here to celebrate a friend's birthday last night. It happened to be Hamden's Restaurant Week too, which was a happy (planned) coincidence. Ibiza had a special menu which featured a lot of very tasty sounding tapas, 3 tapas + 1 dessert + 1 gazpacho for $24! A better deal I have not heard of. We had a shot of really great-tasting gazpacho to kick off the meal. It was truly a sign of great things to come. Among the 3 of us, we shared: Nevat - goat cheese with walnut, fig and truffle oil on toast. Best tapas of the night! Really really yummy. Salpicon de Mariscos - seafood salad with scallops, shrimp, peppers. very fresh seafood. Aguacate con Remolacha - avocado and roasted beet on toast, interesting combination that worked very well. Chorizo con Patatas y Garbanzos - tapas staple. well done too. Lomo de Cerdo Embuchado - marinated and grilled pork loin on toast. pork was a little tough for my liking. Croquetas de Rabo de Buey - braised oxtail croquettes.. not bad, but didn't really stand out. Salmon a la Plancha - salmon with leek and potato emulsion. salmon was nicely done. Arroz de Setas y Tomates - rice and saffron with mushroom and tomatoes. very tasty! I liked it. Fideua Marinera - Crispy noodles with seafood and squid ink aioli. REALLY yummy, another top hit with the table. I thought it was particularly interesting to have crispy noodles, since I hadn't encountered it in Spanish cuisine before. And it was really tasty, loved it! There were only 2 choices for desserts, the cake and the rice pudding. I preferred the rice pudding over the cake, since the sweet richnesss of the pudding was nicely cut by the acidity of the strawberry coolis and passion fruit foam. The sponge cake with dulce de leche was a little one-dimensional for my tastes. With drinks, the bill came up to $120 with tip. Definitely a bargain for such a fantastic meal.
