My wife and I recently ate here for the first time. I purchased a Groupon for dinner at Ibiza, but I read some reviews of the place before buying. They were fairly mixed so I wasn't sure what to expect, but the menu looked delicious. We went in on a Sunday night around 5pm and we were immediately greeted and directed toward a small two-person table. There were only a few other tables occupied so it was pretty low-key. The music was low and pleasant and everything was very clean. There was a lot of abstract art everywhere which added to the modern feel of the place. Our waitress came over to us immediately with a water jug and handed us menus. She was attentive, but not overly engaged. Definitely nice, but on the quieter side. Ibiza is known for its tapas. My wife ordered the Queso Nevat con Higos y Nueces (a goat cheese dish), Alcachofas a la Plancha (a grilled artichoke dish), and one of the night's specials which was grilled salmon marinated in a pistachio vinaigrette. The presentation was outstanding. She says the flavors were amazing. Everything was on the salty side, but that goes for most Spanish food. I ordered the Jamon Serrano (served with bread and olive oil), the Ensalata de Rucula (an arugula salad), and the Cous Cous con Pollo, Morcilla y Chorizo (two different kinds of sausage and chicken mixed with cous cous). The salad was delicious. Perfect amount of vinaigrette and the apples and cheese really set it apart. The portion was just enough. The chicken and sausage cous cous was out of this world. It was salty, but I like salty food. It was served warm and I can't say enough good things about it. The only disappointment was the Jamon Serrano. The meat itself didn't taste very good and the bread was dry. Supposedly it was served with olive oil, but each of the four slices of bread had one tiny circle of oil on it. The whole plate was a let down considering the beautiful way the other dishes were served. We didn't order drinks so I can't comment on that, but they did have quite a nice selection. The dessert was nothing fantastic. We ordered chocolate croquettes and they were tasty, but not worth $8 in my opinion. The bathrooms were separated from the dining area. To get to them, you walk through a French door into a little seating area where there are two doors: a men's room and a women's room. Each bathroom is VERY small. Extremely narrow, but also clean and streamlined. All in all, the food was delicious, my wife says the atmosphere was very "zen", and the prices were a little high (considering the portion size), but we were prepared for that. A soon-to-be-expired Groupon meant our foursome dinner group had to make the trek to Hamden for dinner, and it was definitely worth it. After being spoiled by neverending tapas in Madrid (the city) earlier this year, and frequenting Barcelona (the restaurant), I figured I had enough reference for comparison, so I was interested to see what Ibiza could offer. Our list of ten tapas included: mushrooms, lamb ravioli, tuna, sauteed spinach, patatas bravas, hangar steak, cous cous, bacon wrapped dates, shrimp, and meatballs. I had the red sangria, which was very, very good. Actually, all of it was very, very good. Ten seemed like a lot, and while I don't eat a ton, we could have probably eaten a few more (between four, it's not a lot of food). There were larger tapas and a paella menu, which I might have entertained if not for the Groupon, since everything looked pretty delicious. Our server was very personable and friendly, if not a little overattentive. It was pretty empty in the place, so I suppose he was keeping himself busy. It's a small place, but it was Wednesday, and it was, so that probably deters diners from venturing out into the weather. It's not super easy to find in the dark/rain - we passed it the first time since there isn't a highly visible sign, but once we got there parking was fine and despite how cold it was sitting near the windows, we had a good time. I'll be honest that we were there a while ago and I'm struggling to remember specifics about what we ordered. But what I do remember is that there was a person, apparently the owner (?) who was sitting at the bar in their mostly empty restaurant. And every time I looked over in that direction, they were starring at me. It was an it uncomfortable and disconcerting. We went to Ibiza on the late side, around 9:30pm, on a Saturday night. We knew they closed at 11:00 and didn't know what to expect with the timing but the all members of the staff were extremely kind, helpful and there was no rush at all (even though by 10:30, there were only about 3 other tables). From the second we walked it, they were attentive and personable. The food was quite good. There were 4 of us and we ordered a total of 12 dishes. The shrimp special and the steak were great! The duck tapas were also a table favorite. We got the potatoes for a bit of a "side" and they were well worth it. They were a bit spicy and a large portion-which was much appreciated with the meat and fish dishes we had. It is a tapas restaurant- the portions are not huge! So if you are starving, order more! We did not have wine but had many cocktails-margaritas, mojitos, well drinks, etc. The traditional margarita was great. Another member of our party ordered the jalapeno margarita but did not think it was spicy and it tasted just like the traditional. But still good! After some discussions with and recommendations from our waitress, we also tried a Spain beer and a Portuguese beer - something cool and different! (The Spanish one was the favorite!) We split 6 dishes overall: Marcona Almonds & Spanish Olives -- good to pick at, and for $4, why not? Marinated & Grilled Pork Loin -- cooked perfectly, delicious Cheese Croquettes -- didn't find these to be bland at all, quite good Warm Bean Salad -- really really good and tons of flavor Coffee Tart -- very very light, not a strong flavor, but good Chocolate Croquettes -- FANTASTIC If you only care about location and atmosphere, then go to Barcelona. Never again. Positives: The food was great especially the tuna. Negatives: Strike 1: Their policy for sitting on the patio is rather absurd. My husband and I were there and wanted a table for 4. There were a few tables open; however, it was starting to get busy and since the couple we were waiting for wasn't there yet the hostess wouldn't let us sit on the patio and had to wait in the bar. Of course by the time our friends came the tables on the patio were filled, so we had to wait even longer. It peeved me because if we were given the table initially, we would have ordered drinks and ordered a tapas while we waited. The restaurant was going to get our money regardless; however, last night we would have ordered more plus dessert (it was my birthday) but decided not to. Strike 2: We told our waiter we wanted separate checks because we drink more than our friends, so splitting the checks would be more fair; however, their policy is that they won't do that. Strike 3. As SOON as our bill was done, they told us they needed us to leave because someone else needed the table. We would have gotten up within the next few minutes regardless but to be told that soon just miffed everyone the wrong way. It's not worth the money! I've been twice at Ibiza. the first time was ok, but the second time was a bad experience. Pros: Is a really good food, I live close by, clean place. Cons: way too mall portions n compared with the price ( I understand they are tapas, tapas are free with to your drink in Spain you pay for a glass of wine one to three Euros.) Service needs a lot of work. Staff is very young, uninspired and uninformed. I'm hardly an expert on Spanish food, but when I know more about the menu than the person getting paid to know it, there's a problem. When I waited 25 minutes for my olives and almonds to come out to the table, I should have known there would be a big problem. There wasn't a manager in sight. For tens of minutes, there was no food being served in the dining room at all. Look, I understand that the point of eating in this style is to relax, enjoy company and a glass of wine and not so much focus on marching through the food. I get it. I love it. I agree with it, but when a hungry table of diners are fighting for a few small morsels before the server disappears or the kitchen falls another 30 minutes behind, you aren't properly managing a restaurant. Well, it's cheaper than Barcelona and has better parking and isn't a chain. Otherwise, I wasn't jumping up and down excited to go again. I think a lot of it had to do with the neighborhood. No matter how well you pay attention to detail on the inside of the restaurant, you can't hide Dixwell Ave, nor the Home Depot right across the street. It's just not a neighborhood that screams, "Cool!" or "Fun!" The food was not bad but not exciting. We had the Boquerones (anchovies, fishy but okay, moist not dry). Croquetas de Queso (cheese croquettes, bland), Calamares a la Plancha (grilled baby squid, actually fairly nice), Tortilla Espanola (potato omelette, salty), and Nevat en Tostada (goat cheese on toast, also okay). For dessert we had the Croquetas de Chocolate (actually pretty awesome!) and a special puff pastry with custard and chocolate ice cream (also good). One thing to note is that everything comes in fours and as there were only three of us it made splitting slightly awkward. The atmosphere was nice save the super bright light above the table at the window. It was dim and if it wasn't so loud when packed it would make for a good place to take a date, so if you want to do that I'd recommend later (like 9 pm) or on a weeknight. I liked the framed prints on the wall and the bar looked pretty cool. Our drinks were okay but we felt the pour on the wine was a bit stingy. I'd say give it a try and see for yourself. You'll save the chaos of downtown and feel good knowing you're supporting a local independent business. So I went to this restaurant to celebrate my friend's birthday. I read that it was a nice restaurant on a new haven magazine so I decided it was appropriate for the occasion. First, they have parking in the back, so I loved that. When I was seated, I was greeted by a waitress who was very friendly and had the specials memorized. Great! We ordered two mojitos to start. Mine was a coconut mojito, my friends a passion fruit mojito. It was possibly the worst drink I've had ever. It tasted like pure alcohol. Where's the coconut? The waitress asked if they could fix it, I gave them an opportunity. When it came back, it was worse! It tasted like Pepto-Bismol and alcohol. Yuck! I asked for a glass of wine instead. The food was actually very tasty, everything that came to the table was delicious and it all came out on time, one after the other. However, I came in hungry, hoping to come out full but it didn't happen that way. The appetizers we soooo small. I know they're tapas, but sheesh, they were way too small. Like, you could eat everything on one plate with a bite or two. I'd say in comparison to Barcelona, a spanish tapas bar, Barcelona tastes better, has better tapas, they are $1 or $2 cheaper and you go home full and satisfied. Excellent dinner with Nicole! We came here during Hamden Restaurant week and the deal was fantastic--two small tapas, one large tapas and a dessert all for $20--can't go wrong with that! We were seated promptly upon arriving and a decanter of water was brought to the table. The restaurant decor is dark and modern with a nice bar area, very comfortable. We started with the white sangria--very refreshing and full of chopped lemon and apple. The main reason we chose this restaurant for dinner was that they denote on the menu which dishes are gluten free. Nicole, who has a true gluten allergy, can sometimes have trouble finding a restaurant to dine at without having to eat salads or steak. Nicole had the chorizo con alubias (white beans and chorizo in a hard cider broth), tortilla espanola (potato and onion omelet with aioli), and a paella with chorizo, chicken, clams, shrimp and mussel. She enjoyed each one of her dishes, although we waited quite a while for the paella to come out. I had the croquettas de iberico (ham croquettes--very creamy, nice sauce/puree accompanied it, although I don't know what it was), pepito de bistec (grilled beef shoulder, chimichurri on toast--chimichurri gave it a bit of spice, nicely portioned and plated) and solomillo de cerdo (pork loin with chunks of polenta, smoked bacon and a citrus sauce--pork was perfectly cooked, although I liked the sauce so much, I wish there was more than just a drizzle). Nicole mentioned she never gets to have dessert unless it's ice cream, since there is rarely a dessert that doesn't contain gluten but tonight, she was in luck! She had the torta de santiago--almond flourless torte which was nice and light and had a good flavor. I had the torrija borracha--caramelized bread pudding with a lemon peel ice cream. The bread pudding was actually very good--I never order bread pudding but I would definitely get this one again, the caramelized top really did it for me. The scoop of lemon peel ice cream was so shocking and a huge contrast to the sugar sweet bread pudding, very different! Overall, we had a nice dinner. First off the DO have Gluten free options right on their menu that isn't online. I had the spicy potatoes (which weren't that spicy to be honest), had the arugula salad, and the peppers stuffed with oxtail (my first time having oxtail and wow it was amazing), lastly I had their AMAZING Creme Brulee...IT WAS THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD! I made the mistake of coming here starving. Do not do this. When the first small plate of two little pieces of pork stared up at me, I was torn between wanting to silence the rumbling in my stomach and devour them instantly, and wanting to savor each bite. It was such a tease, especially since we waiting about 20 minutes for the next small plate to come out. Then ten more minutes for the next one. The wait staff barely waited until we were halfway done with our glasses of wine to ask if we wanted another one, but the food was slow to come out. Each plate was in fact delicious - pork, spare ribs, duck, spiced potatoes - but none of them were as inventive as I as anticipating. The atmosphere was fantastic, however. You truly felt like you left suburban Connecticut, and were transported to a small, yet warm, restaurant full of friends and lively energy. My partner and two friends of ours went to Ibiza last night (Sat-Feb 6) for the first time. We realized that it was a different approach here (i.e. small plates rather than full entrees), but were still a little unsure what to expect. We arrived at 6:30 to a packed house! We put out name in at the door and went into the bar area for a drink or two while we waited. Great mixed drinks (nice heavy hand by the bartender) for the others in my group, but a glass of nice rioja for me. Absolutely beautiful decor in this place. Slightly funky, very colorful, but also very classy. Also pretty tight. The bar area only has a narrow aisleway and servers were constantly having to make their way through it. Not a good place to wait for along periods. And fortunately we didn't wait long. Within 20 minutes, we were being called to our table. Now .. here's the only thing i really have to hit this place for .... the lighting. It is downright dim in here. It was impossible for any of us to even begin to see the print on the menus. We all actually had our cell phones out to try and illuminate the menus. Really a problem that I hope they correct as its pretty serious. The friendly and very knowledgeable server we had (i wish I got her name) came to our rescue by reciting not only the specials, but also the more popular dishes and the best way to order the tapas plates. The system is by small, medium and large plates ... broken down into hot or cold .. and also by traditional or modern. Very confusing to listen to, but had we been able to actually see the menus, it might have made more sense to us! Basically we trusted her advice and let her pick for us. We did approximately 5 large plates, 6 medium ones and 6 small ones as we're a pretty hungry group. The dishes come out one or two at a time which is pretty cool because you each can focus on one thing at a time. If, when the dishes you ordered are done coming out, you can elect to order more. Great idea! Every plate we got was a winner. We had ham croquettes, a sea bass special, oxtail and rice, braised shortribs and mashed potato, a killer artichoke and beet composed salad, a goat cheese crostini-type dish, some fried calamari w/ an aioli drizzle, tiny fried codfish balls. We loved every thing and practically licked the plates. One thing here is that they don't serve bread to the table, which is a shame since after you've finished the plates, there was a decent amount of sauce still left that was begging to me mopped up with some nice crusty bread. I did ask our server for some, but she never came with it - and frankly, we forgot about it until we saw the table next to us get a little dish with some sliced bread in it. By then we had finished already so it was a bit too late anyway. We didnt get to dessert here since we had a nice homemade cake waiting for us at home, but I'd love to have a go at them next time! To summarize, we'll definitely be back. We loved the food, the staff - all extremely friendly and welcoming - everyone we encountered was polite and you could tell they enjoyed their jobs at this funky, very cool place! Came here with another couple- it was a good time but I have to say it's wayyyyy over-priced. The food was good but the bill ends up being a ridiculous amount! There's no way i'd want to spend this much on Tapas ever again. I ordered about 4 or 5 Mojito's which tasted great but didn't even catch a buzz which means there was hardly any alcohol included... What a downer. We also got charged for something that we didn't even order... they try to screw you because the menu items are in another language and they print it that way on the receipt. We had the waitress go over each one because it wasn't adding up correctly... sure enough we found that there were added charges. Dessert was delicious. I recommend the goat cheese and fig menu item (queso nevat con Higos) and the veggie crepes for vegetarians, both were dishes I'd eat again. The cod fish croquettes and cod stuffed peppers were all right (croquettes tiny, about the size of a large gumball). Patatas bravas were decent but we've had better - they were low on spice and sauce. I do not recommend the Ensalada de Cana de Cabra (goat cheese, pears, walnuts). It sounded amazing but the caramelization was wayyy overboard. The whole salad tasted like it was doused in honey. I've got a big sweet tooth but I couldn't eat it. The strawberries listed on the menu were not visible in it... So overall I'd say the meal was hit or miss, but tapas is always fun, so I enjoyed it. read more

I think the key to coming here is to do it during the week. We came last night and the service was much better and it was a lot less crowded though not dead by any means. My sangria was a little weak though. The food was great as always. We got the calamari, tortilla, cheese croquettes, steak on toast, chorizo with potatoes, and a special- figs stuffed with goat cheese and serrano ham with a balsamic reduction- really, really good! We finished with dessert, chocolate soufflé with raspberry sauce and strawberry ice cream. My only criticism is the aioli they put on everything. I think they need some new sauces. I live nearby, and walked in. The place was almost empty, it was late afternoon. The manager/owner saw me waiting to talk to someone (about gluten-free and cross contamination- which I always do at a new place to sus them out) and basically ignored me. I walked over to the bar area, and tried to talk to someone, and they were basically rude, behaving as if my questions were an annoyance. The owner treated me like a homeless person, and I walked out never ever to return. I've been heer 8+ times & want to like it. The last time we went was for Restaurant Week 2011. I won't go there anymore.... This place is TOTALLY INCONSISTENT. I've loved a few dishes (avocado beet bruschetta) but even this doesn't always turn out tasty. The service is usually poor. During Restaurant week the waiter forgot to bring the drinks we ordered 3-times (we kept asking). The place wasn't even full/busy because we were there early. This is a very nice place. It has quite nice outside dining. Except it's on Dixwell Avenue so the outside dining view is just traffic. However, the outdoor seating is very nicely done. I think it's quiet and more comfortable than the indoor dining. We tried about 6 tapas choices, both cold and hot, modern and classic. They were all very good even the ones I didn't like. Meaning one or two weren't my favorite flavors, i.e. A cold cheese tapas, but it was only because it wasn't a taste I enjoyed. The staff is very good and is always quick to refill the water. I tried the cava sangria and I can't say I loved it. Too bubbly but it's cava so that my fault not their's. I will say two things about the service . . . We had to ask for napkins. That not excellent service, but the folks are very nice. Also, we had the same plate for all six tapas choices. I really think it's be nice to offer a clean plate - we didn't order all six at once so in between you could have offered a new plate, and I admittedly neglected to ask. Let's face it - I've already had BBQ pork belly sliders, twice fried potatoes with salsa on the plate. It's not really a good plate on which to try Serrano ham or some beet and avocado toastino. There food was amazing!!! The paella is so flavorful! I will crave it until I return! Friendly staff and a quaint atmosphere.

On paper, specifically the menu, the place seems like heaven descended on Hamden. The actual food you get however doesn't quite match expectations. By no means was it bad, just not as good as I was expecting. Good cocktails though. I would say get a cocktail or two and one or two tapas, but don't have a full meal here, very inconsistent and didn't feel great after eating here. read more

I used to love this place but like others have said, it's changed under new ownership. They changed the menu and sadly it doesn't have the same quality. Still better than Barcelona and I enjoy their drinks. Maybe time will tell but definitely miss the old owner! read more

Went here for restaurant week with my boyfriend and two other friends. We got to choose two small tapas, one large tapa (is that an oxymoron?), and a dessert. I got the "mini trio" and stuffed peppers for my mini appetizers, a creamy noodle/seafood dish for the main tapa, and flan for dessert. The mini trio included a gazpacho shooter (yum), a small omelette, and roasted beets on toast - all three were tasty. The little stuffed peppers were also tasty. Main dish was satisfying and not too heavy though it was creamy. It included mussels and scallops which were both good. The only reason I had to give the review 4 stars is because it took them an HOUR to bring out our dessert after we'd gotten the first three courses quickly. A waitress came over at one point to see how we were doing and we said we'd been waiting an hour and she quickly rushed to see what the hold up was. To try to make up for it, another waiter offered us very tiny glasses of a sparkling wine. Nice gesture, but tiny glass = hour of waiting? I know other places that will comp an entire bottle of wine or a portion of the check for that long of a wait. Overall, the food was very good and I'd definitely come back to check out other things on the menu, but I have no idea what the hold up was on that last bit! read more

Restaurant was closed when my friends and I decided to go out for lunch. The restaurant says it opens at 11am, yet my party and I waited until 11:15am hoping someone would show up. Cigarette filters as well as cigarette ash covered a variety of their seats that are out on their porch, not pleasant. Ended up going to a restaurant 4 miles away called "Ristorante Luce" worth the drive! read more

The food here is very good, there are healthy options and they are open late. They have been a go-to for me for delivery during Covid. My only suggestion is that they get better bread. Their bread is like a sliced hot dog roll. With so many amazing local bakeries like Bread and Chocolate there's no excuse for lackluster bread. read more

We sampled a delicious variety of hot & cold tapas. They also have a nice specials menu to choose from. I also had a delicious pepin martini with my meal. I highly recommend Ibiza for a traditional tapas meal. read more

Ibiza Restaurant - Blue cheese croquettes, arugula salad. - Spanish Near Me - Hamden, Connecticut

We had great dishes like the ham wrapped around goat cheese and fig over the summer. So we thought we could order the same dish again. But then they changed the menu and we were a bit disappointed. The croquetas de bacalao were small and more breading than fish in the balls. I have had better jamon Serrano de Espana in Spain (but of course, that is like comparing apples to oranges). The quesos de Espana con membrillo were delicious but I don't remember the cheese selection. Patatas bravas were better at Barcelona. Quesos nevat con higos rellenos was good but we missed our summer fig/goat cheese dish (hence, 3 stars). Bomba rice with braised oxtail and pepito de filete were forgetful. Parking is easier to find on the side streets and there is not an obvious sign in front of the restaurant. We drove past it before. And it was not cheap.
