There are few dessert-oriented eateries in the Westfield Garden State Plaza mall (with dedicated…read moresit-down space), especially on a Sunday. My husband and I were craving a spot of something sweet, so we came in here in search of a light bite. Adding toppings is where it's hardest for me to exercise restraint. It's a chance for me to load up the cheesecake bites, heath bar crunchies, gummy bears, rainbow sprinkles, and then called it healthy because it's frozen yogurt and because it's got some fruit. All those toppings can start to ring up the cost of your unhinged choices because everything is totaled by weight. On the plus side, there's plenty of seats, and even some spillover seating inside the mall. It also seems like there's something for everything along the wall of flavors. Dairy-free for vegans, oatly flavors for those allergic to soy, sugar-free for the diabetic, and Dubai chocolate for the fad chasers. The guy at the front was nice enough to grab us a few samples. We got to try the new taro pie, vanilla, and Oreo but to me, most of them tasted really artificial with an ice shardey texture. We ended up going with the original yogurt flavor since it's our typical order, but this was far from the best execution of it because this, too, had the texture of wet slush.

The interior is bright, colorful, and vibrant with 8 self-serve machines and a total of 16 different flavors (hence the name, 16 handles). They have a large selection of toppings. They also serve bubble tea, acai bowls, and smoothies. They rotate their flavors every so often, but there are a few staple ones they always keep. They have dairy free, gluten free, and sugar free options. Each flavor is labeled with allergens and nutrition facts. The employees let you sample what you want. My favorite flavors are the Original Tart, Taro, and Salted Caramel. I love to top it off with mochi and gummy bears. My only complaint is that some flavors come out verrrrrrry icy and watered down... Froyo should have a smooth, soft serve-like texture. Once you decide on your flavor(s), you pick a cup and swirl away. You can add as many toppings as you want BUT they charge you by weight. So it's easy to rack the price up $$$$. And yes, it's a "healthier" alternative to ice cream BUT just like the price, you can easily stack up on calories.

If you've ever been here during peak summer hours, you know that's a rarity. This place is a local favorite, and long lines are pretty common later in the day. I was really hoping to get my favorite, Bailey's Cream, but they were sold out. That's one thing to keep in mind: while they have a ton of flavors, they aren't always all available. I ended up ordering the Black Raspberry Chip with free rainbow sprinkles (my go-to), and it definitely hit the spot. Someone in our group got a milkshake and absolutely loved it, while another ordered the Cappuccino Oreo and enjoyed it as well. Portion sizes: A single scoop (their small) is surprisingly large. Even when the line is long, the staff does a great job keeping things moving. One employee usually takes care of an entire group from start to finish, which helps keep the ordering process efficient. Everyone we've interacted with has always been friendly and helpful. Even with the cash-only policy, limited seating, and hectic parking, Van Dyk's is still one of our family's favorite summer traditions. The homemade ice cream keeps us coming back year after year, and hopefully next time they'll have my favorite ice cream, Bailey's Cream, in stock.

There are also new ones to try like birthday cake, fruit mix, and cheesecake with berries. If you ask for a cup, it will also include a tiny cone on top. It may just be for looks, but we made a tiny single scoop cone with it. The gelato was creamy and smooth and really hit the stop. A nice addition to the mall when looking for something different.
