Stopped in to try the spring menu and ordered the raspberry lavender iced tea. Unfortunately, I couldn't really taste either the raspberry or the lavender, and it wasn't very sweet. It was okay, but I was hoping for more flavor. The pastry, however, was phenomenal! I downed an ENTIRE cream-filled doughnut. Came to know of this place through a Yelp friend and, enchanted by the name, I started following them on social and always kept in mind to go visit when I could. I don't live close by to it, so it takes some planning. They're known for their sourdough donuts so I had to have one, even though I'm lactose intolerant. Ordered the orange-pistachio cream doughnut on Ohhh my yumness -- it was SO good. Not really sweet/ definitely not overly sweet, which is so elegant. Not everyone gets the sugar balance on point but I'm a huge fan of their flavor balance. Could really taste the orange OR pistachio, maybe a hint of the pistachio, but no complaints at all. Every bite was really very enjoyable What WERE super duper sweet though were the staff :). Also no complaints there :) The coffee was also really good, too! Officially my new favorite go to bakery and coffee spot! Located in Ridgewood closer to the train station I find parking on this side of town is always fed easier. Inside is well decorated with ample tables and indoor seating should you choose to stay. Definitely more of a layout for ordering to go. I ended up ordering almost one of everything from their menu. Their matcha with strawberry jam is a must try as it is both delicious and refreshing and not too sweet at all. I love their oversized cinnies! Delicious and so quickly eaten it did not make a photo. Everything truly is made with love and clean ingredients here and you are able to taste the difference. Service is friendly and efficient. I was at my family's house when they told me that they had discovered a new pastry shop, Black Magic Bakehouse, a place that had actually been on my list to try. They stated that they had leftover donuts from the day before and asked if I had wanted to try them. While my sweet tooth was not typically attracted to that type of dessert, I knew that Black Magic was unique and worth the sample. The bakery had an already intriguing list of pastries on offer (various flavors of cinnamon rolls, cookies, and more), but they also produced daily specials for a fun change of pace. All of their donuts were made with sourdough brioche, which allowed them to be airy and fluffy. The Chocolate Coconut variety had a chocolate base and was topped with a dark chocolate ganache and toasted coconut. Despite all of the decadent ingredients, it managed to be light and not overly sweet. The Strawberry Fruit Tart, on the other hand, was super sweet. It was stuffed with vanilla pastry cream and packed with seasonal berries. Lastly, there was a Lavender Glaze one that I felt was the most balanced and natural. This was my second time visiting and I got to say this is a great little gem on the west side. It has plenty of street parking and the lines aren't bad during the week. They're known for a funky rotating specials menu, danishes and sweet and savory combos staple items. I had the coconut cream cruffin and the mocha latte- everything was very delicious. My only feedback is the coffee menu seems a little limited and I do think the prices are little high for a latte and muffin - it was $15 before tip. If you haven't been to Black Magic Bakehouse, I don't know what you're waiting for. The staff is really friendly and helpful. The shop itself has a really cool vibe, with a great seating area in the back. The baked goods are next level. Don't come here looking for a run of the mill plain doughnut. The flavors here are exciting and interesting. Think flavors like pandan, cardamom, passion fruit. They also do a lot with laminated dough, and it's just as good as the doughnuts. Also, don't sleep on the savory items. They usually have a savory scone and some croissants. They make killer sandwiches too, on housemade focaccia. The Loxwich is a favorite. Do yourself a favor though, and get here early. Items do sell out, so if you want a full selection then get there before 11am. This is easily one of the best bakeries in the state. read more

Two of the things I wanted to try were sold out already (cardamom bun and focaccia) and one of the items I bought sold out right after I ordered. Not a person who enjoys sweets, drink anything past an iced latte with minimal syrups added. And yet, Black Magic has me disappointed when they operate only from Thursday through Sunday as I crave to go visit on a tuesday, haha. The portions are huge, the prices are more than reasonable and the decorative interior can be split into three genres. Punk Rock rebel, Rustic and relaxed wooden interior and gothic church vibes deeper in the back. Black Magic Bakehouse lives up to its name and personality. . The menu changes every month, and trying nearly half the menu with friends in my two trips in July left me wanting to make it a regular visit. The texture of the cream was a light cream so it wasn't over sweet or too thick... very well done! I'd like to try other unique flavors in future visits. I was slightly disappointed that there was no cappuccino on the menu which is my go to. So I only got a donut and was given only this flimsy paper holder. This would have been fine, but the two women after me ordered a similar item each and were each given a sturdier pink box. I love this place, glad I don't live closer or I'd literally be here every day. The staff is friendly, the ambiance is super cute and eclectic (obsessed with the mosaic bird light), service was quick and food was out of this world. My friend and I split the seasonal passion fruit cinnamon roll and the breakfast sandwich with sausage- the cinnamon roll was sweet, chewy, and the passion fruit was a unique touch I haven't seen done before. Very few times has a place showed so much promise but did not deliver in the taste department. Thebdonuts were funky. Yuzu one had a foul taste to it. The cinnamon roll was ok but wasn't soft. The chocolate chip cookies were also hard and not my style. The crueller was probably the best thing I had. The other donuts with fillings were nothing special. My synopsis is that they are trying too hard to make something creative. Sometimes you got to throw the fastball right down the middle. I really wanted to love this place. The inside is so adorable it feels like you're in NYC. The staff was so nice. The pastries made the entire place smell delicious. However, the pastries themselves were completely underwhelming. I got a stuffed cinnamon roll which while the dough was delicious and fluffy like a cloud there was such a lack of cinnamon in the roll and the cream cheese frosting on top might as well have been a block of cream cheese, which is so disappointing. I would not call this a true cinnamon roll. I also got their milk and cookies swirlie and two of their seasonal donuts banana coffee and coconut cream, which were also underwhelming and had bland flavoring with tons of cream. The bread on the swirlie was also very dry. The best thing I got there was their Keylime Cruffin which had the most flavorful lime filling, and the cruffin in itself was so buttery and delicious that I think I'd go back just for the cruffin but nothing else. I really wanted to love this place, but it just did not wow me like I was expecting it to. Maybe I'll go back one day and have a total different and better experience. BRAND NEW brick and mortar location in West Ridgewood. After a lot of hype and healthy Instagram following, I wanted to check out this bakery. I won't say that I was impressed, but I'll come back when they are more established and more comfortable with the operation/traffic flow and update my rating then. Because it's so new, there were several people frantically parking outside. The line was long and confusing based on the location of the entrance... there is a counter with chairs by the window that is practically unusable because of this long line - with time and slower traffic this should work itself out. There are several baked items to choose from but you'll need to get there early because they open at 7am and close at sell out. Note: they fry everything in peanut oil (in case you/family/friends are allergic). I ordered the ONE chocolate chip cookie they had. I was given a cookie with no chocolate chips. When I asked to swap for the other one I was told "they're all chocolate chip cookies. I said okay thinking the chips are under the baked dough... nope! I also ordered a cream cheese icing cinnamon roll. It was good overall but too much bread to icing ratio.... The icing was probably the best part! Saw this bakery on instagram from someone I follow and I had to try. What caught my eye were the options they had seemed so appetizing. I decided to visit on a Sunday around 10 am. The wait time was pretty long as the line was outside the door (this is how I know it's good). I waited for about 30 minutes online. The bakery is pretty small but there is seating for one to sit and enjoy. All the pasties were made fresh and menu updated on social media or what was still available and what was sold out. They had Fresh bread, artisan donuts and savory items such as sandwiches made with their homemade focaccia bread and other items. Everything was fresh and made with love and care and I appreciated it. The donuts I ordered were the maple cinnamon, lemon glaze, apple cider and the chai swirl. SO GOOD and I loved the flavor combinations perfect for fall. I also ordered the bacon egg and cheese sandwich. The eggs were fluffy and bread super soft it was perfect. I sat down for a while to enjoy my meal and read my book. The staff was very friendly. Yeh ambiance was perfect and cozy, they even have items such as shifts and sweaters for sale. I was dying to try this place based on stories I kept seeing on instagram. I went to visit on a Sunday morning around 7:50am and got a few things: the bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, strawberry shortcake donut, everything bagel donut, black forest donut, raspberry earl grey donut, and a cinny croissant bun. The BEC sandwich was an impulse buy because I was starving but omg, you must try their breakfast sandwiches. The bread was so soft and flavorful and the fillings inside were plentiful and seasoned beautifully. If you want something savory, don't sleep on this breakfast item. All the pastries were really good but there were a few that stood out. The everything bagel donut is a MUST ORDER. Originally when I saw this item on the menu, I did not gravitate towards it bc I wasn't sure how I felt about a donut/bagel crossover but this donut was probably my favorite of the bunch. The filling was not over powering and the donut shell was super soft - the perfect balance. The strawberry shortcake donut was also really good! I loved that the frosting was not too sweet and it really did taste like strawberry shortcake in donut form. My favorite thing about this bakery is that they constantly cycle through different items so there is always something new on the menu to try! Service was fast and the workers were really focused (even with a line out the door). Storefront itself was really beautifully designed. Great small business that has been open in Ridgewood for a couple of months! When I went, I was able to check their Instagram where their daily menu had been uploaded via their story. I was absolutely blown away by the different flavors. As you can see, I pictured some donuts; everything bagel and raspberry. I've been dying to try Black Magic. We are big sourdough fans and their baked goods look amazing on social media. The owner is great about posting their daily menu and updates on what's remaining for the day. Knowing the line can get pretty long, I was stoked to see just a few people lined up outside on Saturday morning. However, I was fooled and service is slooow. The line is not due to demand, but due to inefficiency. When it was finally my turn, I asked the gentleman if I should go ahead and rattle things off -- he said yes, I listed the 6 items, he came back with 3 and looked at me blankly. I stated the other 3 again. He moved at a snail's pace. I appreciate the care, but it should not take 10 minutes to pack a simple order. There is only one register so even though 3 people are taking orders, it takes time to be rung up. (I'll admit that my crying baby waiting in the car with my partner made things feel worse.) That said, the baked goods were OUTSTANDING. The stuffed donuts are especially delicious, and the focaccia may as well be the best we ever had. Seriously amazing, and we're eager to try more. They are an amazing way to start the day (or have anytime truly). We would have returned the very next day but could not commit to 45 minutes! I went on a Saturday morning around 10 and the line wasn't very long (5 min wait) and they still had plenty of items in stock. from what I understand the menu rotates each day and they are open til they sell out. presentation of the food is fantastic. donuts are made with sourdough brioche base. the result is a donut that is a little sour and not very sweet. personally not for me. chocolate croissant was REALLY good. good coffee here too. there are other savory foods and sandwiches that I didn't get a chance to try - but maybe next time! read more
