Came here on a weekday evening with a friend. This is a bar and it serves a more extensive menu of bar food, basically. Everything was solidly average. Service was fine, nothing particularly good or bad. We had some beers, and its hard to go wrong with this. They were served cold, price was average. I tried their hyde burger and fries - solidly average too. Patty too dry, and not enough sauce. Fries were also average. Place is really dark, but that's the vibe. Place is also kinda cramped. I'm sure this is a fun pub and local hang out since it's dog friendly and casual, but the food was not very exceptional and that's what we were looking for. The waitress was nice and it wasn't very busy but service was kind of slow. Luckily the other patrons were friendly and had a cute dog so we passed the time easily. The poutine with pulled pork could have used much more gravy, though the fries were good with salt n pepper coating. I can't remember what I had so I'll have to look at my pictures. Lol. Unremarkable I guess. Downside if you sit outside - people smoking huddle right next door on the sidewalk and you have to smell it. Pigeon poop may roll off the awning onto your head and table, and maybe into your food... you've been warned. But like I said, for a drinking spot they might be spot on. The place seems a lot more settled in now, and thank goodness they've replaced those weird paint-splattered deer heads with.. paintings of guns that shoot flowers. Hmm.. Beers are still decent, and so is the service. The seating area is a bit more cramped than I would like though - people keep bumping into my chair on the way in/out. read more

How does this place only have 3.5 stars? It's a 5.0 for me. This is a cool spot - kind of a punkish dive bar, but with some of the best burgers we've had in a long time. Think hand-formed patties with crisp bacon and beautiful crispy buns. A+ for sure, although next time I'll request them to hold the BBQ sauce since it distracts from the perfectly spiced burger patty. read more

Well, this place was okay! Gothy interior and very, very cute bartender. Ooh la la! She made my day. Also, a sunny patio outside - and one of the only patios with empty seats on the sunny day I visited! Unfortunately, even though they offer free-range meat, the menu was pretty uninspired. Fairly basic pub food. I was satisfied with what I ordered (tofu rice bowl) but it was absolutely uninteresting. It pains me that there are so many prime spots in Vancouver that offer PUB FOOD menus. There is so much more to food than yam fries, edamame, chicken wings, burgers, and generic "fusion" dishes! I would love if Hyde stepped their theme up a notch and crafted (or had a chef craft) an inspired, interesting menu to go along with their cute gothy decor. We need more of that on a Main Street that, I feel, is swiftly turning to cardboard. read more

There's nothing super awesome about this place, but there's nothing really bad about it either. It really is just a bar, so if you're looking for anything more than that you won't find it here. They have a nice selection of beers on tap and the drinks are very reasonably priced compared to many other places in the city. The patio is simple with wooden tables and benches. The staff are more attentive than your typical Main St. eatery so that's a good thing! The menu is your typical bar fare. My wings were tasty and hubby enjoyed his onion rings. All in all a good place to consider when strolling in Main. read more

We stopped in for Caesars and lunch on the patio last week and left pleasantly surprised by the charming staff and delightfully full from the stellar burger and flatbread we shared. I think the guy serving us was running the bar and entire floor and patio, it wasn't super busy but he really killed it. Our drinks were made with obvious care and his service was genuine. After years in the service industry it becomes so obvious when someone is good at their job and also when they're not. This guy was a solid (I'm the worst at forgetting names sorry) and made our hungover-hair of the dog dining experience that much more enjoyable. I like the place even more now that I realize the meaning behind the name "Arrive Jekyll. Leave Hyde" - rad I'll be back! read more

I would probably give this place more stars if it really seemed like they were trying to follow through with their originally intended theme of tim burton meets alice--but honestly I just didnt see it. Maybe it was the bunch of guys sitting at the bar watching the game on the screen. Maybe it was the haphazard menu which didnt seem to playfully name its food along the theme. A new restaurant/bar on Main! Yay! My wife said that theme of this place was Alice In Wonderland meets Tim Burton, so this made me even more anxious to check this place out and see what that exactly meant. I could see that there was an attempt made, but really I don't think much money was spent in order to realize this theme (the decor is really nothing special or original). Food was reasonably priced, we each got a salad that was a decent size, tasted good and was very reasonably priced (about $8 I think). My wife had been there a few days ago and someone in her party ordered the same salad. Strangely this time it was different. Previously it came with some toasted bread on the side, this time no bread. When we asked the waitress she said it was because it was a different cook and each cook had their own interpretation of the dishes. I guess to some it would be nice to have a new surprise with each visit, but usually what brings me back to a restaurant is being able to count on at least some sort of consistency. Anyways the waitress was nice enough to bring us the bread. Unfortuantely the service was slow (only one waitress for the bar and all the tables). The restaurant was pretty busy. There was a party that came, seated themselves, got fed up with waiting, and left. When people are spending their hard earned money for a night out this shouldn't happen. If the service had been better I would've definitely given this place 3 stars. read more

I haven't been to Hyde in many years, and last time I was there it was dark and cramped and I wasn't a huge fan. This time, however, I had a lovely time! A friend suggested we go here as it's his local, and having not been in years I agreed. It was a stunning day and luckily they had lots of patio space available, and 4.75 craft beers on special! Needless to say, we had a few. The patio is simple with wooden benches on either side, and four tables of two. Our server was super chill and still very attentive - our beers were never dry. We both ordered salads - I got the Cobb and he had the buffalo chicken Caesar. The bite I had of his was quite good, and I enjoyed mine too. Usually I don't like salads with creamy dressing AT ALL, but this went well with the avocado, hard boiled egg, and blue cheese. There was a good amount of "stuff" on the salad - it didn't feel like it was just filled with greens, and for the price that's pretty awesome! This place is a capital B Bar. It's not trying to be anything fancy or themed (any more), it's just a great place to get a fantastic craft beer (from Parallel 49 to Off the Rail, they've got it all), and a good plate of grub. Wow, I really had hoped this place would be better. Had a horrible meal here one night. My girlfriend and I waited an hour for their house special pizza and a salad. There were also very few people there that night. The salad was fine, but the pizza was un-edible. The crust was under cooked, raw. The veggies were not cooked through. The sausage it said it came with, was still in the casing, so I was picking sausage casing out of my teeth. And there was SO much cheddar cheese it was unbelievable. What kind of irked me the most, was as I was leaving the waiter said, "Sorry you didn't like your pizza". It's not that I didn't LIKE the pizza, had this pizza been cooked properly, I probably would have liked it. Its that it was so poorly put together I didn't even get a chance to try it. And half your servers have great attitudes and the other half need big time schooling... Part of the appeal for Hyde is that it supposed to run off a theme of Tim Burton meets Alice in Wonderland with the décor and the menu items, however, it seemed to be more of a lazy children's B-day version than a themed bar/establishment. A lot more effort could've been invested into the general ambience of the place. My best friend and I went after a visit to the record store to discuss the bands that haven't played Vancouver in over a decade (yes we are that much of music geeks). It was part of a discussion that we were supposed to have the previous week at Sweet Revenge (that didn't go well, see review of that) and with a swap meet the following day, a little overwhelmed to have a healthy debate while working the table. I've walked by the place at least 7 times with serious thought. The menu items are standard bar menu items, however, was disappointed in what I had ordered. I picked up a business card of theirs 3 weeks prior and did some Yelp research which had 4 stars, however, clearly their standards were a little different than mine. That is not to say that they didn't deserve those 4 stars, however, little was said about the food and more about the drinks. The waitress was nice and went through the emotions, however, making that social connection was difficult and it seemed more scripted than genuine. The food was a bit slow, however, my best friend and I were so involved in our musical debate that the time passed fairly decently. I did notice the other patrons were there before us being a little annoyed. The guacamole was flat. It was just mashed avocado, cilantro and tomatoes...all fresh, however, there were no spices or salt. It doesn't take a lot of effort to make guacamole. I make about 2 cups per week for my regular healthy fat content on Weight Watchers and my guacamole was much more desired. How do you have spiceless guacamole? The tortilla chips are not gluten free...warning. These were more like wheat bread deep fried. Very deceiving in description. The white rabbit burger was decent. It had your usual fixings and it tasted juicy, however, it didn't "pop" or stand out. As for the dessert, there was none...not even a cake. Over all the menu was uninspiring. Remember the tea party in Alice in Wonderland......it was all about the tea cakes at the tea party. Clearly they missed another mark on the theme that they were trying to execute. The reason why this place gets 3 stars is 'cause clearly my best friend and I over stayed our welcome by 90 minutes discussing music and they were gracious enough to allow us to stay well after the bill was paid to finish our debate. My coworker had told me about the strawberry vodka she had tasted at Hyde the other night. As it had been a hot day yesterday and Saturday night, I was totally game. It was served with a seltzer water and was nice and refreshing - think adults Italian Soda, though whipped cream was on hold. I liked the Alice in Wonderland decor, and if they had served little cakes that said 'Eat Me' on them, I'd have followed the directions. ;) Good service and friendly staff. Food was ok, nothing special. Drink was ok, can't screw up bottle of beer. The worst was the service. The only server kept going on a smoke break. This wasn't a Monday night, where the place is empty. This was on Saturday night, with the full house (mind you, the full house only seats about 30 people - including at the bar). The frequent smoke break by the only server means, your drink doesn't get re-filled, your food arrives cool to the touch, and good luck trying to get the bill, or even paying for it. Once we got the bill, we couldn't pay for the bill (paying by credit - if I had cash, I would've just left it on the table, and gone) since the server was on the smoke break, again, and the bartender refused to take care of it. We had to wait over 20 min., sitting around the table, with our drinks long been empty. Server needs some serious schooling on service. read more

The review posted on the door says that Tim Burton would be proud of the decor, and I wholeheartedly agree. You walk into the a mishmash of decor, with plastic painted deer heads lining the walls. The drinks listed on the chalkboard sound so exotic and I desperately wanted to try them out, but unfortunately, it was the middle of the day. Something to explore next time! We split their regular poutine and a club house sandwich with yam fries. The poutine was delish. Slightly salty, but I love salt so I can't complain. I just wished the fries were cooked a little bit more. The club house sandwich was moist and tasty. I loved the mayo/mustard combo they had. The yam fries were okay. Maybe needed a little longer to cook. All in all, I enjoyed the food. I would love to go back after work one day for drinks and appys with friends. read more

If I only wrote this review last week, I would have given Hyde 5 stars. Don't get me wrong I still love this little Alice in Wonderland inspired joint on Main St. but Hyde recently changed the menu a bit to attract more of the local crowd they are getting to more of a pub style menu of burgers and pizza. The cocktails however are unrivaled in the area, their extensive list is made up of classic and modern drinks, called potions, and are all equally amazing....and yes, I've tried them all. read more

For a really sunny patio on Main, Hyde is a great addtion in the Burgoo stretch of restaurants. We decided to forgo the 30 minute wait at Burgoo, make the most of the sunshine and proceeded down Main Street for an alternative. Hyde has a small patio which gets a great exposure of sun. Snagging a table dawned by the warm rays, this was a good place to be. They have a small selection of beers on taps, a good selection of wine, but I believe their standout is self-infused liquors. I wasn't really feeling a strawberry vodka so I settled for a beer. We shared a flatbread which was nothing spectacular, but it was good share dish for us. The interior of the place is quite funky, artists' painting of flowers and guns, and I like the small but open space. I'd come back just for the patio and a drink, but unsure about trying their other items on the menu. 14/100; The Yelp 100 Challenge read more

I come here for their drinks, and it's the drinks that score that fourth star for me. They have amazing infusions, some of which are constantly changing - I don't think I've ever had the same cocktail twice. They also have a great selection of local beers. I'm never disappointed by a drink here, and they're great at recommendations. Their cheap wine is pretty cheap wine though, but no complaints here. Their food lacks oomph - someone else was pretty accurate in saying it was just bar food (and pretty mediocre too). This bar is stumbling distance from my house. Dangerous!! I've visited this place three times so far and I absolutely LOVE it! The staff are sweet and friendly and always ready to chat! The choice of music is always right up my alley and they have such a sweet decor (although a tad confusing, the wall mural poem is laced with spelling and grammatical errors!) They have great specials like $2 Tacos which are super tasty and Double Caesars for $7. An attractive deal especially when paired with $3.50 tequila shots! I've been here a few times and have enjoyed it every time. In reading the other reviews I'm a little perplexed. I think - regardless of what they were going for - the decor is perfectly fine. Skull decor seems to be the default "alternative" bar decor in Vancouver right now, which I'm not going to complain about. Each place has their own spin, and Hyde's direction has it's own distinction. It's not over-done or obtrusive, while still engaging. No, really, I enjoy the artwork. Aside from that, it's cozy. There's a TV? I've never been one for TV's in bars, and I didn't even see a TV at Hyde. Adding to the atmosphere is a great selection of music, with quite a few songs I love (Heart - Dreamboat Annie anyone?) or am glad to have been introduced to. As for the food, I've never had it. I've actually never seen anybody eating it either. The menu isn't really all that inspired, but I don't really care. I already have favourite food places on Main already that I don't see myself getting bored with anytime soon. I've always had fast service here. The fastest service ever actually. We ordered, started pouring ourselves water, and by the time our water glasses were full our beer had arrived. The rest of the night was consistently timely. On the topic of beer, the selection isn't diverse, but it does have a good local showing, which I always appreciate. The price is also quite decent. "Not Your Mother's Bingo" some time ago was also a pleasantly unexpected addition to what was intended to be a drink with a friend. read more

This place is a little gem on Main street. 5 Point is full of hipsters, Public even more and then...well...that's about it for this section of Main. If you want a good, small spot with really inspired food and good service wander through the "do-I-pull-or-push" front door and grab a seat. I went there on a Wednesday, they were having "Sexy bingo". Basically, two girls barely dressed that should call themselves anything but sexy saying sex related words. It was pretty lame. We ordered drinks and appies and it took the waitress, I'm not lying or exaggerating, 45 minutes to bring us a sliced pita bread with store bought hummus. Ridiculous. We live in the hood. Do not go here for food and atmosphere. Go for cocktails only. That's all they are capable of. We went there tonight and they ran out of chicken wings by 7 pm. How does a restaurant run out of chicken wings on a Friday night? We ordered nachos instead. They were OK. Nothing special. They serve their food in plastic baskets........not good. I am in town from Montreal visiting Vancouver. I saw this place on Yelp and was pretty exited to see it. When I got there, the door was wide open and we were greeted by a tall rude barmaid telling us "the blinds woudnt be down if they were open"... I have no idea how we were suppose to know as it's a themed bar. On Yelp it showed closing time at 1:00AM and it was 12:00AM. Disapointed, but this could be a one time bad experience. read more

Went here on Saturday, early evening probably around 7:30ish. This is now probably the 4th time I've been here. I wanted to like this place, as it's a good location, walking distance home . I also have a friend that comes here a fair bit, and it's just an easy place to meet up. Alas, I just can't. and here's why: Food - Mediocre at best. I've eaten here once before, and had the same thing twice. Partly because there was nothing else that appealed me at the time on the menu, and also I was curious about their consistency in terms of food quality. I ate the trio of poutine. Better this time than the last, but still just Ok . My boyfriend had steak and prawns which was the special that night. He specifically said rare, and the server repeated both our orders back to us. Guess what? It wasn't rare but medium..not even medium rare. Jesus, really? I understand if you go from medium to medium well, but from rare to medium? It was barely pink in the middle. He sent it back and he finished his fries in the mean time. To the server's credit, she gave him a free drink to compensate, which would have been good if he could have drank it. He was driving so of course a second drink wasn't really an option. Speaking of booze, it looks like they no longer have Strongbow on the menu. Now, to be honest, it's not my favourite cider - however, it's more often on the menu than what I like more, so it's kind of my old standby, and I'm not a huge beer drinker, so when they have taken that off, I don't even care to go there and drink anymore, which is what I did the second time I went here 'cause the price was decent. Their new cider (Foundry) is more expensive, and frankly, is not much better than drinking the road pop ciders I used to consume when I was 16. PASS. Service - Hit and miss. Consistently inconsistent.. It's only ever been just Ok. I've gotten very friendly, good service when I've been with my friend who's a regular, to completely slow and indifferent to the point where you feel like they consider you a bother when you need something. Atmosphere - It's supposed to have this Alice in Wonderland vibe apparently. I don't think it's particularly evident myself. Not that I care, either way. They have local art on the walls though, which whether you care for it or don't, it's cool they support local people. The music is bad.. Real bad. At least it has been all the times I've been there. Saturday night they had Led Zeppelin playing...effing Stairway to Heaven. No joke. I wanted to stab my ear drums so I would at least not have to hear it. They played some other crap, which I don't recall but it was in the same vein of bad. I will say that Saturday night was a horrendous experience. Probably because it was the Saturday before Halloween so everyone is out and about in their costumes on their to a party etc. We did think of that, but we just needed to eat before carrying on for the rest of our evening and it was merely a pit stop..not a linger and hang out dinner. Some D-bag customer was setting off what sounded like either fire-crackers or cap gun rounds all over the damned restaurant, and soon other morons around the bar were doing the same. Including a kid of around 10 that was probably hopped up on caffeine and sugar from her soda she was drinking. One of them landed by my foot while we were eating and I just about lost it.. Seriously people? Is it so much to ask to be able to eat our food without CRaCk! PoP!! POP CRACK! CRACKCRACK!!! going on constantly ? By the time I was done I wanted to fire bottle rockets into the bar area. The staff seemed to be perfectly Ok with it and clearly not too concerned about other patrons. This is a fabulous bar, small, cosy and I'm a fan of the quirky Alice in Wonderland/gothic decor. I'd probably gone right by the place a hundred times before realizing just what a funky bar/restaurant it really is - decent beers on tap at reasonable prices, some great in-house drinks, good food and fast, friendly service. Within a couple of visits our server already greeted us with our favourite beer. What's more, Hyde is a very pleasant exception to Vancouver's annoying obsession with wall-to-wall big-screen TVs! My only complaint? We moved house recently and no longer have this great bar within staggering distance. read more

I was looking for a place to host my 30th birthday party, and stumbled across Hyde. With a seating capacity of 50, it holds a lot of people for a intimate setting, and was exactly what I was looking for. I dealt with the manager Crystal, and she was absolutely fantastic. There was no rental cost as I opted to not use the kitchen services, only a buy-in for the night. They have a burlesque dancer perform on Saturday nights, and since I was booking the venue on a Saturday they included the dancer at no extra charge if I wanted. I was given the option of providing my own music via iPod, or one of their staff usually sets up playlists and could handle it for me. Throughout all the planning, Crystal was beyond friendly and genuinely excited about my birthday and the event. On the day of, Crystal volunteered herself and staff to decorate for me if I wanted, and made sure to have the other patrons cleared out for the specified time. The staff was great, it was a very happy atmosphere and they all seemed to want to be there. I had come prepared with my own music, but the music they were playing was so good I left it at that. They even pulled my friends aside to see if anyone had gotten me a cake, and sent them to DQ to surprise me! Melody Mangler was the burlesque dancer for the night, and she was incredible. She did two performances that had the crowd on their feet cheering, and really involved me as the focus. It was a ton of fun! Overall, Crystal and everyone at Hyde went out of their way to make my party one of the best birthdays ever. My friends had a fantastic evening, and now the only question is how are they going to live up to the precedence set, in large part due to how accommodating Hyde was. read more

Neat little place with good service. Drinks menu looked interesting. Food menu is very appealing and perhaps can be more descriptive. I had the veggie Fancy Bleater burger with a delicious hearty patty, goat cheese and balsamic reduction. The patty was a really nice surprise as it was thick and healthy - normally you don't really know what's in a veggie patty. Very good poutine, especially when it's on for $6 on Tuesdays. When I've been there the music has tended toward heavy metal, which I quite dislike, but to each their own.
