They're known as Sushi Hinode now. I've visited this place on two separate occasions in different years. Every time, it has made me (and my partner) sick. This visit, I just got three things: a spicy California roll, an avocado roll, and miso soup. The avocado in both rolls was not fresh, and neither were the wasabi and ginger. The miso soup was way saltier than needed. I would give them one star, but the tea was good, the servers were working hard, and the service was fast. Service is fine and their dining area is quite spacious with comfy booths plus convenient free parking but their food taste seems inconsistent and can become disappointing meal. We tried more of their cooked dishes and their special sushi didn't meet expectations. The salmon used in the sushi roll was off and I wished they created the roll with smoked salmon instead. Their unagi sauce didn't taste good and I likely would not recommend their sushi rolls with raw fish or sashimi for takeout. However, their hours of operation with no breaks and happy hour menu still make them a candidate for drinks and light bite. Ordered tonight through Uber eats and unable to leave any feedback or review through that app. They prepared the food quickly and got it to me on time as I paid the premium for direct delivery. However, the food was just so-so. There was NO wasabi for my sushi there was NO soy sauce. This meant my food was extremely boring. How does one even eat sushi without these two condiments? No chopsticks were sent although I don't mind that so much but when you order sushi, you expect at minimum wasabi and soy sauce. My Gyoza came with a very, very small amount of dipping sauce for the Gyoza. Hyaaa... so late la! One of those late nights and options were limited so decided to try out this place for some take out while on the way home. This place is located right beside Douglas college on 8th Street in New West. There are paid street parkings available (I see roof top parking?) Here were the food I ordered to go; 1. Soft shell crab. Lack of flavour and a bit too crunchy for a soft shell crab to my liking. 2. Tako wasabi. Pretty good, not slimy. 3. Salmon and tuna sashimi. Decent size and fresh but could use a bit of a presentation even though it's a take out (all sushi places should STOP putting lemon slices near sashimis, they literally cook the outside of whatever fish it touches). 4. Salmon, hamachi, chopped scallops, tamago, albacore toro nigiris. Fresh but the toros missing that buttery taste. 5. Spider roll and futomaki. The futomaki was pretty good. The spider roll was a bit off, maybe because the softshell crab was a bit off. 6. Deep fried poached egg. Surprisingly pretty good, I actually enjoyed it. I could snack on a couple of these. 7. Asari garlic butter. It was pretty bland even though I do smell the garlics. And what's with so much broth? It's like a guppy fish swimming in the ocean. 8. Beef teriyaki with rice. The rice could be softer and the beef could be less dry and slightly thicker so it wouldn't be like eating beef jerky with rice. When I went to pick up the order, the restaurant was pretty quiet with one table of customers. A weird little sense of silence especially late at night in New West. The service from the server who packaged my order was okay, although could be more welcoming . Maybe cause it has been a long day and it was late. Updating this review for the deep fried poached egg and pumpkin croquette. They still charge extra for any sauces here. I always like to have nabeyaki udon when the weather is cold. Nothing like a hot bowl of soupy noodle to warm the body. The udon is still not the best I had but it will do in a pinch, especially in new west area. I like how the server brought the chili flakes bottle out together with the udon. That is being proactive. Someone recommended the deep fried poached egg and I just had to try it. And yes, no regrets. It is super delicious! If you love runny yolk in poached egg, deep fried version is quite mind blowing. Crunchy crispy outer shell encasing the soft jiggly egg white and runny yolk. Yums! The pumpkin croquette is also nicely done. One perk about Hyack aside from their reasonably priced dishes is their parking! As parking in parts of New West is not always easy to find nor free they have their own free parking! On to the food! We ordered Seafood Salad + Fantastic Roll + Prawn Tempura + Negitoro + Chopped Scallop & Toro Nigiri. The salad and fantastic roll was amongst our favourite! I was always curious about Hyack Sushi, but never tried it until I moved into the neighbourhood. First off, I didn't expect it to be upstairs, nor did I expect it to look like a decent restaurant. It always looked like a hole in the wall from the outside. Currently, this place is on top of making sure customers are safe. You can order through a QR code and earn points for food rewards. They keep track of customers, properly space out the tables, and provide hand sanitizer at each table. My favourite roll is the Japanese croquette roll: I love croquettes and cream cheese! I also enjoyed their Alaska roll with its creaminess. I have yet to try their special rolls yet. The appetizer tempura is a must get as an affordable way to fill your stomach. Good amount of batter to food ratio. It's also cheaper at happy hour (3-5pm). Past happy hour and into dinner rush, the quality does drop a little so come before then. Decided to give Hyack a try yesterday when I was craving sushi for dinner so decided to get some takeout! I was really surprised at how affordable it was - I decided to get an alaska roll, a deep fried california roll and a negihama roll. Everything came packaged nicely and I really appreciated how they packed the wasabi and ginger in a seperate container. The alaska roll had a really delicious sauce and the salmon was so fresh and the avocado was the perfect amount of ripeness. The deep fried california roll was fried really well and had sriracha mayo and teriyaki sauce drizzled all over which I love, I wish it was a bit crispier but I'm sure that is because of the delivery. The negihama roll was really delicious too but I wish the fish was a bit fresher, which is why I'm bumping them down a star. I heard about this place on Instagram and the pictures of food looked good, so I thought I would give it a try. With it being so close to New Westminster skytrain station, it is very convenient. It wasn't too busy when we came in for lunch. It's quite a large restaurant that'd be good for groups. I ordered a chopped scallop roll, hamachi nigiri, aburi ika, salmon, toro, and salmon bomb. I was excited for the aburi because of what I had seen on social media. I was a little bit disappointed in them. They weren't very buttery and on the drier side. They definitely needed to have a sauce to go with it. Probably the salmon bomb was the best one out of the bunch. The hamachi was a little bit off for me. It almost had the taste of saba to it, which was something I was definitely not expecting. The scallop roll was good. Overall, the portions were good and pricing is pretty affordable. Went here the other day and was deeply disappointed with the service and quality of food. After going here a handful of times before, my revisit was rewarded by a proverbial case of the runs the day after. What's more, beware of their digital (QR code menu) ordering system. They double charged us for most of the items we ordered. They ended up charging us two orders of everything and our waiters were adamant that we ordered two of everything and had to pay accordingly. The problem is we didn't double order. The manager was MIA and our wait staff couldn't do the gracious thing of removing the charges for food not order. More did they admit their app malfunctioned. Looking for a new place to try for sushi and I came across Hyack. I've been to Ki Sushi across the way and wanted to try something different. Decided to meet my cousin and his GF for dinner at 7:30 Saturday night. There is a small parking lot in the back that holds about 5-7 cars for Hyack Sushi. Otherwise you'll have to find street parking which is metered. It wasn't very busy when we first went in, my wife had gotten a table for us while i parked the car. Other than us there was a table of two seated behind us, another table across from them at the far wall and some people waiting for takeout. The decor is very modern and gives a good atmosphere. I'm assuming the lack of customers is due to word of mouth/advertisement not getting out as far just yet because the food was good. My wife and I ordered one of the special rolls called the "Fantastic roll" as well as Wakame Salad, Yam and Prawn Tempura, 1 Tamago Nigiri, 1 Masago Nigiri, 1 Inari Nigiri, 2 Unagi Nigiri, and 6 Chopped Scallop Nigiri. As well as a full order of Tuna/Salmon Sashimi. The wait staff was very pleasant and attentive, filling our tea when we asked as well as clearing finished plates in a decent time frame. The portion size of the sushi is regular sized so not some of the places you go to with TINY pieces nor the OVERSIZED type either. Price point mid ranged and their menu has quite a few unique items. They had a special menu with sous vide salmon dishes as well as steak dishes. We however did not try these. I love my chopped scallop nigiri and usually get multiple pieces whenever i go for sushi. As i did here as well. However I think when i visit Hyack i will probably order fewer pieces, but this is not because they are not good... they are very good but very rich. They are quite a bit creamier than other establishments and in a good way but also due to the richness my palette couldn't take as many pieces as I normally would order. By my 4rth piece my mouth was like.. no more.. too rich...but sooo goood...but too rich! lol. This to me is a good thing then i can order other sushi i normally wouldn't due to my craziness for Chopped Scallop. The tamago nigiri looks to be flame kissed and has a slight sweetness to it. Quite a bit different than your average sushi establishment. It's slight uniqueness gives it that edge over normal sushi places you find anywhere else in the GVRD The rest of the nigiri my wife ate were of the standard fare, quite fresh and good tasting. The Shashimi was all me as my wife doesn't like raw stuff as much. Decent size slices and a good temperature. Not overly warm..but slightly cool with proper consistency and texture. The Yam tempura again slightly different are cut into fries and then battered and fried. The batter they use is nice and light and their frying technique is proper as in the tempura was not overly greasy.. just right and proper crispness! Overall i'd say the quality of this restaurant is above that of their neighbor across the way and if i had a choice would choose Hyack over them. Definitely would come here again. read more

We (threesome) went to Hyack Sushi for an early-lunch recently, arrived at the restaurant at its opening time of 11 am, and were their first customers of the day (and only customers during our stay). A heads-up re: parking and entrances. There is a small, no-fee parking lot there, accessible from 8'th Street - the parking area is level, and offers a wheelchair accessible entrance to the restaurant. Access to the restaurant from 8'th Street itself, is not wheelchair accessible - there are several stairs from the sidewalk to the restaurant's entrance level. Once welcomed in, we selected booth/table seating along the long wall of the restaurant, and were promptly provided menus, cold water, and then tea, when it was hot and ready to be served. Service to table was good, with staff attentive throughout our stay. What was ordered and shared: -- agedashi tofu (w/spicy sauce - coatings of tofu cubes thin and very uneven, some cubes barely having any coating, tofu rather stiff, and not creamy) -- takoyaki (flavourful and tasty) -- assorted sashimi (some pieces a touch warm, others cold, a flavour to several pieces that hid their natural flavours and tastes, possibly from a marinade used, for me, the preparation looked better than it tasted) -- prawn tempura (batter thin and crispy, tasty) -- California combo (California roll, w/salmon, ebi, and tuna nigiri - well-prepared rolls, so-so nigiri) -- chicken yakisoba (pan-fried noodle, w/a few small pieces of chicken, and assortment of shredded veggies - quite flavourful and tasty, but it really lacked the 'heat & sizzle' we have gotten to know and enjoy with other preparations. Sushi is good, as good as the other top places in New West but not quite as good as our fave joints downtown. Salmon sashimi left something to be desired. Not as nice of cuts as elsewhere. Their yam roll was great, as was the Rocky Mountain Roll, both vegetarian. Their smoked salmon cream cheese roll was also tasty. The Alaska roll had a weird sauce on it that put us off a little. Salmon oshi was delicious, but be warned - there is some kind of mustard like sauce on it, if you don't like or are allergic to mustard. So close to home, we'll be coming back for sure. First time here and I live this place. They are super attentive and the menu is innovative and fun. The decor is spacious and trendy. The deep fried poached egg is the absolute best! Why on earth have I not seen this before? I could eat a ton of them. The salmon Nigiri were tasty both raw and torched. Anyone who has spent any time around New Westminster will probably be very familiar with the word "Hyack". Originating from the Chinook jargon for quick, fast, or hurry up, the term has been adopted by various New Westminster area groups such as the 1861 volunteer fire department, the "Hyack Company #1", the "Hyack Band" that performed during the May Day celebrations, and the popular annual "Hyack Festival". After seeing some delicious looking sushi offerings from this newest restaurant on social media, I decided to see if the hype was really all that. This restaurant is located on 8th Street, about a block away from the New West skytrain station. The interior is relatively large for a sushi restaurant and looked to have been recently renovated. The thing that I immediately noticed was the lack of natural light inside (nary a window in sight save for the front entrance). I decided to try some of their aburi nigiri (since those looked the most appealing) as well as some sashimi since I had a craving for fresh fish after recently returning from our trip to Japan. First out of the block was the Half Toro Sashimi ($9.45). It was a bit expensive for half an order but I do admit that the toro slices were on the larger size. When my aburi nigiri arrived, I just thought back to those pics that I saw on social media and thought that there was no way that these were the same items. In reality, I'm sure that the dark interior of the restaurant had something to do with how these appeared (rather dull, pale, and underwhelming). I ordered the Salmon Bomb ($3.50), Aburi Hamachi ($3.00), Aburi Hotategai ($2.50), Aburi Toro ($2.75), Aburi Salmon ($2.25), and the Aburi Tai ($1.75). The aburi nigiri was rather basic and not very buttery or saucy. You'd expect the sashimi to have a bit of caramelization from the torching but that was decidedly missing. That being said, the salmon bomb was pretty good and probably the best of the bunch. The yellowtail and the salmon were also the better pieces of the bunch whereas the scallop, tuna, and snapper were just a bit meh. Well, a new year has arrived and I've made my first revisit to this restaurant. I'm happy to say that things have improved a bit... specifically, it looks like they've turned the lights on (well, at least during this visit). There's still not a lot of natural light in here but it's better than my first visit. This time around, I went with mostly non-aburi nigiri sushi... except for the Sushi Bomb ($3.50). As with my last visit, the Sushi Bomb (a little ball of rice surrounded with aburi salmon sashimi and topped with chopped scallop and tobiko) was the best of the bunch. It reminds me of some of the off-menu items that you can get at Victoria Sushi. I also tried the Tobiko with Quail Egg ($2), Ikura ($2), Toro ($2), Sockeye Salmon ($2), Hamachi ($2.50), Chopped Scallop ($1.75), and Unagi ($2.50). The unagi (freshwater eel) was very good as it turned out both buttery and meaty. Both of the tobiko and ikura had that "popping" sensation that you get with eggs. While the salmon was firm yet buttery, the hamachi (or yellowtail) had a stronger flavour, which is to be expected. After a failed visit to a different sushi joint, I found myself at Hyack Sushi again. One of the things I like about this place is that they have a parking lot (a small one albeit) so I don't have to be nickled and dimed by the street parking meters. Wanting to try more of their menu items, I ordered their Chicken Karaage ($6.95) which was the highlight of this meal. Although there were a few pieces of cartilage, the deep-fried chicken thigh pieces were superbly moist on the inside while having a thin and crispy shell. For the rest of my meal, I decided on trying their Salmon Oshi ($12.50). Visually, it looks quite interesting with the ikura topping and the mix of sauces drizzled over top. However, I felt like they went a bit overboard on the sauciness of this item and it wound up overpowering the whole dish. Instead of relying on the subtle flavour of the salmon, all I could taste was the sauce. On the inside of the oshi sushi was something creamy (I'm guessing cream cheese) which really made each bite a bit too overwhelming. If you like your oshi sushi creamy and saucy, this might be a good item for you. Personally, I felt it was a bit overkill. Still undecided, I figured I should give them another try. This time around, I ordered the Deep Fried Poached Egg ($2.50) and the Spicy Mentai Yakiudon ($9.95). The egg turned out pretty good with a soft yolk surrounded by the crunchy exterior. It might have been overkill, but I broke open my poached egg on top of my noodles (which were already coated with a fair amount of roe). The udon noodles were toothsome with a nice chew to the bite and a mildly spicy sauce. As with the other dishes at Hyack, the yakiudon was a bit overly saucy for my liking. At the end of the day, there's some pretty good dishes here but others require refinement. read more

I've eaten a lot of sushi, but this sushi was really something else! So fresh and so perfectly prepared, the combinations of flavours were amazing particularly with the Salmon Oshi. The Toro Sashimi was what dreams were made of! We went as a group of four, half of which didn't eat Seafood so they ordered a tender Ribeye dish and a Chicken Yakisoba - both were delicious, and interactive with the little burner plate that came with the Ribeye. Our regular place was closed so we tried this place and it was pretty bad. We had a bone in the salmon of our donburri and the salmon oshi aburri was a bit weird - like a paté was in it. Everything in the washroom is white, brightly lit and clean. Stalls are separate rooms for maximum privacy but there's nowhere to hang your bag. The dual flush option is nice. Paper towels and soap are stocked but the floor could use a bit of a cleaning. 4 out of 5 flushes. read more

I've been coming back here consistently for about 3 months. I wouldn't pick any other sushi restaurant just for the deep fried poached egg, it's become part of my life. Seriously, instead of making my own breakfast I'll order three or four of them and slurp them down. All my friends know about my egg addiction to this place, its consuming me. worst customer service with a cancellation of an order thru Uber eats. I was contacted and told to do it myself by the restaurant as they couldn't fulfill the order to my specifications via the app, and in the end had to pay the full amount for the meal and got nothing in return. Uber eats says that they should have done the cancellation thru the in store app to refund me. and when I called the restaurant back they now have no recollection of my order or me. they got paid and I got nothing. what a racket. worst experience I've ever had. never again. read more
