Durian cake, $30
Kathleen N.

The people here are friendly and parking is spacious! I also grew up coming here and the quality of the cakes have always been good :)

Mooncake Gift Box

In recent yrs it is harder to find traditional and fresh Bánh dẻo during the Mid Autumn Moon Festival. Since I was in San Diego for the weekend I had to check out this Yelp recommended place. It's a little shop with a very nice Vietnamese lady that helped me. I got the Bánh dẻo, snow skin with lotus paste filling my mother has been hunting for them all season and last yr too.

Strawberry birthday cake
Jenny N.

I got my birthday cake here and it was memorable! The sponge cake was light and fluffy. The whipped cream was not that sweet, which is a compliment for an Asian household. You could choose different fruit options to add to your cake. I got the strawberry one and we all enjoyed it.

My first visit to Huy Ky Bakery. I picked up mooncakes as a gift for the owners of Paris Bakery, who are presently engaged in opening a new outlet in Chula Vista called Banh Mi Paris Express. Huy Ky's owner, Mr. Yu, was helpful as I made my selection, and was gracious, offering me a peek behind the scenes at his work area, which is nicely set up with an impressive array of professional baking equipment. He also pulled up a video to show me how he makes his mooncakes, an enterprise that is much more complicated than I'd imagined. Having seen these things, and after spending a few minutes chatting with Mr. Yu, I'm not surprised that Huy Ky Bakery is a favorite source for mooncakes and other baked delights among San Diego's Vietnamese community. I'll be back! ********** See how mooncakes are made! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kx4dIRi1hZY

Coconut pandan cake , delicious and reasonably priced
Sone M.

I was looking for a specific cake for my baby shower and came upon this mom and pop bakery in the heart of city heights , gentlemen at the counter was immediately welcoming and was friendly and attentive to what I was looking for , came on Tuesday for a cake for a Friday , all in all I barely spent 5 mins there and got what I needed , i ordered a pandan coconut cake and it was light / fluffy and delicious , not sure why in all the years living in Sandiego i didnt get to try this place , will come back for sure

Heart shaped birthday cake. Whipped cream frosting & fresh strawberry filling

You can not convince me that there is better bakery in San Diego. With just a couple days until her party my daughter decided she wanted a heart shaped cake (we were having her party at a tea room, so originally we weren't going to do a cake) and a friend recommended we try going here. Well I am so glad that we did. On appearance this bakery is nothing glamorous, it's not an instagram worth spot by any means but it has a charm to it. It reminds me of the bakeries I would go to as a kid. The women working were so sweet and friendly and with just over a days notice they were able to make my daughter exactly what she wanted a heart shaped cake with whipped cream frosting, fresh strawberries for the filling and the lightest fluffiest cake we've ever eaten. Not to mention incredibly affordable! I highly recommend coming here for all your cake needs. We will be back for sure!

Melissa C.

I come here for the cakes! They don't do super fancy decorated ones but it's freshly baked, the sponge cake is so soft, the buttercream is light, airy with the right amount of sweetness and the price is great! With at least a 24 hour notice, you can get a two tier cake for next day pickup. There's different flavors to choose from, the price depends on size and filling that you order. If mooncakes are your thing, this is the place to get them as well. Stop by, everyone is super helpful & friendly.

"The log cake was not only beautifully decorated but also incredibly delicious, with a perfect balance of flavors and a soft, moist texture. Absolutely loved it!"

Snowy mooncake, lotus filling
N T.

This review is for the snowy mooncake, as I don't think I have tried their regular mooncakes yet. The worst part is that the cake is so soggy, and so is the filling. Then it's too sweet for me. So far, this is the sweetest one by far compared to other mooncakes. I bought this one 1 or 2 years ago. It was bad but I forgot which brand, so I bought again this week. I should remember the name now.

I worked with Kim at Huy Ky Bakery and it was a wonderful and delightful experience! I knew I wanted an Asian cake that wasn't too sweet or processed. Kim gladly accommodated all of my needs and requirements, even peanut allergies, and we had a delicious strawberry taro sponge cake. She was super responsive and kind throughout all of our communications. Our guests absolutely loved it and it was a hit! Truly a hidden gem in San Diego area -- I'll update once I get official photos from my vendors back but for now here is the photo I got of us cutting the cake from our guests!

Absolutely a must-try! I also tried the carnitas croissant when it first joined the menu, and it was okay, but the bibimbap is the one I'd order again. The mini croissants are adorable and absolutely delicious. Both the minis and the signature croissant are so light and airy! Highly recommend grabbing the minis if they're available because they do sell out. When they're gone, I happily default to the full-size signature croissant. If you have a sweet tooth, the s'mores croissant is another must. They torch the handmade marshmallow right in front of you, so you get to watch it melt before digging in. Such a fun presentation! The iced coconut cream latte is small but tasty and on the sweeter side, so a good choice if you like sweet coffee. Personally, the pastries and treats are what keep me coming back. Service:We've gotten lucky with fairly short lines on our weekend visits. On our first visit, a Saturday, the owner stopped by each table to ask how everyone liked their food and hear their thoughts. That personal touch really stayed with me. You can tell how much care goes into this place! Ambience:Lots of seating, both indoors and outdoors, plus live music on Saturdays! It's a lovely spot to sit and enjoy your pastries. I live nearby and walk over, so I can't speak to the parking. An easy five stars and a must-try when you're in San Diego!

We ordered a bunch of desserts to share at work so I got to sample a good selection. Pricing is in line with other fancy dessert places. Presentation is beautiful. Some items were to my taste, others not so much. Creme brulee cheesecake - The brulee is very slight, not enough to form a sugar top or anything. More just like a good slice of cheesecake. Cookie - This was my favorite, strong vanilla flavor from the icing, a pretty densely baked cookie. Very large, worth the $4.50 in my opinion. Carrot cake tres leches - Not for me, the cinnamon was overpowering and I would've liked to taste more of the other spices. Pandan cake - The texture is slightly different, almost bouncy like some tapioca or rice flour was used. The pandan flavor is very present; I enjoyed it, reminiscent of some Southeast Asian desserts. A bit on the sweet side. Mango cupcake - Very delicate whipped frosting, overall good but nothing standout to me Passion fruit tart - Very good. Can be a bit sweet for some, I think some of my coworkers didn't enjoy the gritty sugar in the center filling, but I thought the flavor was excellent. Coconut cake - Also not very popular among my coworkers; for me it was a little sweet but also a little one note. Not my favorite. Hojicha cheesecake - Good! Strong tea flavor which balances out the sweetness, and possibly the most unique flavor out of all the desserts. If I were to return here for something, it would be for this. Pavlova - The eggy smell is too strong. Least popular item among my coworkers. The custard inside is decent and the dessert itself is beautiful, more of an instagram dessert.
