    Roll Cake Series

After landing back in San Diego, I immediately started craving the egg tarts we had while visiting San Francisco. I searched Yelp for bakeries nearby and ended up at Sunmerry Bakery. To my surprise they were running a special where the egg tarts were only $1 each. Sunmerry Bakery is a Taiwanese-style bakery chain known for offering a wide variety of Asian breads, pastries, and desserts along with drinks like teas and coffee. The location had a good amount of parking which made the visit easy. Inside, the layout felt a little overwhelming. There were so many breads, pastries, and promotional signs packed into a small space that it felt a bit overstimulating. They did have a lot of unique breads though. Things like mochi taro bread and mochi donuts in different variations of flavors. I was hoping to find something airy and light, and the pistachio bread caught my eye because it felt incredibly soft when I picked it up. Along with the pistachio bread we ordered two egg tarts. Service was friendly and the checkout process was quick. Our total came out to about $5.20. There is very limited seating inside with only a couple of tables outside. Unfortunately the pistachio bread ended up being a disappointment. It tasted like it had been sitting for a while and old, which surprised me since it was only around 10 AM. The pistachio cream filling also tasted artificial and the ratio of cream to bread felt lacking. It was basically a fluffy bread cut in half with a layer of cream squeezed inside. The egg tarts were the highlight though. I wish they were served a little warmer, but they had a nice egg-forward flavor that I really enjoyed. The flaky crust made them even better. Unfortunately this visit left me feeling like Sunmerry Bakery falls a bit lower on the list compared to other bakeries that offer similar items.

my family and i have come here a couple times. A little bakery, both visits have been in the afternoon when some items were sold out. even then, we were still able to pick out several savory and sweet options. their breads are soft, a hint of sweet, and all good choices depending on your preferences. it's a quiet shop, the employees have been polite. i have yet to try their drinks and cakes. there's a couples tables and chairs inside and out. prices are comparable to similar bakeries. about $2-3+ each.

This Sunmerry is very convenient to get to in Kearny Mesa and has plenty of parking in the same lot as Costco Business center. This one is a little more spacious than Mira Mesa location with some indoor tables. I really like that Sunmerry will often run Buy one get one free BOGO promos on different drinks and this location participates. The drinks aren't the tastiest, but they're solid and good value. I haven't had anything amazing, but also haven't had anything terrible. The service is always fast and friendly. Reliable stop. All the baked pastries look good and are competitively priced.

Best bakery. Nicely priced and delicious. They have drinks too. Our go-to are the Mochi, red bean and the sesame buns. There are some great cake-like desserts in the refrigerator also. The strawberry and mango ones are good. Love that they have seasonal treats. Got the mummy chocolate mochi bun today. It was cute and yummy Since up for their rewards. It links to your credit card (even via apply pay). We usually get a few dollars off every other visit.

I was emailed a deal for $32 Snoopy Fruit Paradise cake and I could not resist. Cake was beautifully decorated and coated in whipped cream. Whipped cream was light and sweet. Loved the fruity flavor from the fresh strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Vanilla chiffon cake was light and fluffy with a delicious sweet vanilla flavor. This is one of my favorite cakes in town.

I was looking for a rainbow cake and was surprised to find one! Super cute cake not too sweet but a bit small. It came in a cute package.

    a lot missing

Their pastries are always so soft, fluffy, and delicious! We love their taro mochi and the cute seasonal offerings! Sadly this time on Saturday lunchtime- ish there were a lot of blank spaces on their display! When you walk in, it's a burst of sweet, bakery delicious smell - dangerous because you'll want them all!

Sunmerry Bakery is always a solid choice no matter which city I'm at. I came in for some baked goods such as taro mochi bread and bolo bao. They're delicious. I also tried out their honey milk tea and it also hit the spot for me. It had perfect sweetness. Service was quick. Price is average. Quality always good. It's located in a plaza with plenty of parking.

I have been wanting to check this place out for quite some time. One of my friends noted this was her favorite bakery. She lives in Seattle so I was very excited when this landed in SD. My sister stopped by and grabbed some items for us to try: 1. Tuna Bun- this bun was good, it had circular layers of very thin dough, I wish it was more savory 4/5 2. black sesame mochi bun - had pretty good flavor- 4/5 3. Taro Bun- my niece liked this bun 4/5 4. Coconut twist roll- this was pretty standard coconut twist roll 4/5 5. Custard roll- This one was the best, one of my favorite standard picks. The bun was uber soft outside and the inside had lots of soft custard 5/5 (pic attached) 6. Nutella bun- This was pretty good if you're in the mood for nutella 4/5 7. Walnut bun- This was my 2nd favorite bun. There is no middle of any kind but the bun is packed with walnuts. The bread is slightly sweet. I was very surprised about this bun. 5/5 Service:N/A (I was not there, so I can't rate) Ambiance:N/A (I was not there, so I can't rate) Food:4/5

First time here. Got their bogo deal, but only 3 drinks options, I think it was honey cold brew, honey green tea, and passion fruit green tea. Only applies to the same drink. Wish they allowed mix&match. Pastries were okay. Tried their coconut raisins pastries and taro mochi bread. Honestly not sure what differentiates them from other pastries. But will probably be back to try other pastries.

I had seen the bakery sign for years but didn't know what it was, but walking today (Sunday afternoon) because we got some ramen next door. Oh my goodness! I didn't realize it was a Japanese bakery!! Had I known would have come way before! It reminded me of a bakery I went to in Kyoto bullet train station, so very nostalgic for me. Even the set up and packaging kind of the same! I tried the green onion and sausage pastries and the tropical cake. I also had a cold brew black coffee. First the coffee was really good! I was quite surprised because I'm kind of a coffee snob. So thank you for that! The pastries were so delicious and so fresh! It really brought me back to Japan. There were so many others I wanted to try but I would be able to eat them all, so I'll just have to come back . I want to try the chicken, ham & cheese, ham & egg as well. So, I'm not a dessert person. I know, I know. But the guy helping me recommended the tropical cake slice so I got it. I tried it and it was just like deserts in Japan not sweet at all and very light. The person helping me with my items was so nice and helpful even if it was a Sunday afternoon. I appreciate that. All in all great experience andhighly recommend. I'm going to be a regular!

Reliable bakery with a good mix of sweet and savory pastries! They had a decent amount of pastries left when I came in later in the day around 5PM. I am a savory pastry person and liked their Tuna Pastry and Frank Roll. They had a lot of soymilk both sweetened and unsweetened. I tried the unsweetened version and I liked it a lot! Very flavorful, but a bit pricy for the size. I haven't tried their drinks yet but they also look unique and refreshing. Their sweeter pastries were unique flavors as well and use popular Asian ingredients like red bean, taro, black sesame, and matcha. I'm liking Sunmerry Bakery so far and hope to catch some more pastries in stock next time!

Tried a mix of savory and sweet: the Curry Pan was good but didn't totally wow me, while the chocolate, strawberry ribbon, and matcha croissants were all really solid -- especially because they weren't overly sweet. The surprise favorite was the caviar bread: salty, fishy, briny topping on crusty bread that somehow just worked SO well. We also split a croque monsieur which was warm, cheesy, and perfect to balance out all the pastries. I wish they had real cutlery (vs only plastic disposables) for dine in customers. Our family shared all these goodies and a plastic knife was no match for some of them. Overall, really good quality pastries and breads, worth the early lineup. Their cakes may be pricey, but…read morein my opinion, for the amount of work, effort, and quality of ingredients, I think they continue to be fair. For example, some other specialty bakeries/shops are charging similar prices for cakes and cheesecakes that are much simpler. In comparison, Extraordinary Dessert cakes take 3-4 days to make, have 6-8 alternating layers, and are typically adorned with edible gold and/or flowers. The key is to find which items you like and which are okay to pass on next time. What we ried this time: -Match Misu Cake (7/10): ricotta cake layers soaked in matcha and layered with marscapone whipped cream. This one was pretty good and ranks in my middle to high range. I only wish there was more matcha flavor (maybe if you dine in and get the sauce, this would help) or the matcha was paired with another flavor ... either go fruity (maybe a raspberry sauce, strawberry pieces, white peach pieces, or like a peach oolong cream layer) or go chocolately/coffee (maybe had some crushed up chocolate covered espresso beans). My go to's: -Ivoire Royale (10/10) - my ultimate favorite still. If you like light desserts, white chocolate, berries, and moist vanilla cake, thus one is for you. Classy and unpretentious -Shangrila (10/10) - my other favorite and will make you feel like a princess with all the pink chocolate curls. A little bit adventurous and innocently elegant. Ones to skip: -Au Chocolate / La Bete Noire / Dame Chocolate - get the Viking instead. That's my favorite of all their chocolate cakes -Lemon ricotta - get the Passionfruit Ricotta instead -Torta misu - the matcha misu is better. The tortilla misuse made me want a regular piece of tirmaisu than a cake version -Coconut cream - not bad, not amazing though

Instead of simply saying they were unable to accommodate the request or offering another option, we were told to "go somewhere else," despite already spending the amount we did . If you want a grounded flavor without getting another coffee, try the hojicha latte! Lines are always better with a friend and even though we all arrived before opening there was still a healthy line. I was really excited, to finally get to check them out, I saw on their socials that a new chef had taken residency and that they came with some Filipino flair. As a fellow Filipino I definitely wanted to support. I ended up ordering a lumpia roll, ube butter ensaymada, a halo halo tart and a egg sando sandwich along with an iced matcha with honey, with tip my total was $48, which isn't horrible considering these are meant to be higher quality pastries. My girlfriends and I found a table and decided we would share, I shared my egg sando sandwich and the lumpia roll, while they shared their ube butter ensaymada and the turon kouign amann. My matcha, was a horrible, it was a muddy green and really lacked any matcha flavor, my friend didn't like her matcha either and she had the miso caramel matcha. I didn't even finish my matcha and I can really take one down. We joked about how we should have opted for the orange juice instead. Now for the pastries, I was really underwhelmed by them, the ensaymada was just fine, I honestly cannot remember the taste of it, it lacked something. The egg sando sandwich, the filling was plentiful and flavorful BUT the bread was dry, was that potato bread? The texture was off for me and I ended up just scooping out the filling and eating it like that. Where the sando had a good amount of filling the lumpia roll lacked it, it was so sparse I figured it would be more like a sausage roll so I was taken aback by how little there was in it. Flavors were fine, the pastry was buttery but I just wanted a little more. The one pastry we agreed was better than the rest was the turon kouign amann, the crunchy bits of sugar was so reminiscent of turon but the filling, for me was like uncooked banana bread batter, that threw me off entirely. It was better, but not the filling. So overall, I would say it was okay, I guess for the costs it just didn't meet my expectations.

The employees are a mixture of a well oiled machine and great customer service. I was worried about…read moremy meter running out and was asking if i could run out real quick to add more but they coordinated on the spot and finishes my drink by the time i completed my payment. They were amazing!!! I got the biscoff matcha latte with the biscoff foam and a few slices of cake. It was soooo good. I'm going try to plan for some relaxing time next time. The inside was beautiful and peaceful. Looks like a great place to start my day.

Hinar in downtown is such a beautiful and aesthetic spot. I love their earthy color palette (I want…read morethat paint color in my house lol) and the overall vibe of the cafe. The main seating area is almost always full, but there's more indoor seating in the back through the hallway (where the bathroom is), plus some outdoor seating to the side. The drinks are really good. I always get mine half sweet, and the flavors are consistently great. They also have a ton of cute, picturesque desserts. They're a bit too sweet for my taste, but you can tell a lot of care goes into making them and they're definitely tasty. Parking can be tricky downtown, and it can get busy with lines, but it's totally worth it for the drinks, desserts, and overall ambiance. FYI, they have a new location up north in Scrips Poway, it's cute but slightly different aesthetic (umm more industrial) and is in a strip mall, so, way more parking!
