Hawaiian Coconut Hapia Cake
Kristina M.

TallGirl ordered my HBD cake from Kona Kakes. People were asking what I wanted for my birthday. I asked TallGirl to work all that out, but I told her I had that bit all figured out. I wanted to try Kona Kakes. The cake..It is amazing!!! She said ordering was easy, pick up was perfect and quick. The cake is moist, not too sweet, but dense. The density is reasonable and not too heavy. Tho this cake weighs like 10lbs! :) No messing around with the hapia pudding! The shop has a pick up counter and a display case. It was clean and cute. I am sooo looking forward to trying the other cake flavors. I'd highly recommend

Ube Cake

If you are looking for an Islander flavored cake you must check out Kona Cakes. The owner is from Hawaii and knows how to create cakes that are so good and moist. We ordered an Ube Cake for a birthday. The Ube cake was moist and the Ube Cream was not to sweet and everyone wanted another piece!! They have Guava, Lilikoi, Ube, Mac Nut and more!! They have small sample cakes you can buy to help decide which flavor to buy. Call ahead and order the sample cakes!!! The shop is small and you can see them making and decorating the cakes from the counter. Very friendly service!! Highly recommend if you want a tropical flavored cake!

A supposedly "mardi-Gras" theme cake. It honestly seemed like an afterthought

I've ordered from this place three times now, with two of those being custom cake orders. The first two experiences were great -- they were responsive, easy to work with, and the decorations matched what I asked for. Unfortunately, my most recent order was a completely different experience. Communication was very poor this time around. It took multiple emails and about 10-15 phone calls just to get an invoice so I could pay for the cake. I was never able to reach anyone directly thereafter, which made the process frustrating. When I went to pick up the cake, I arrived about 40 minutes early and was met with a pretty rude response, being told to come back later. While I understand timing matters, the interaction could have been handled more professionally. The biggest disappointment was the cake itself. I was charged an extra $25 for a Mardi Gras theme, but the decoration looked like an afterthought -- random green strips and plain pink and gold sprinkles that didn't really match what you'd expect for that theme. It's disappointing because the flavors are genuinely good, and I had such positive experiences before. But based on this last order, I'm not sure I'll be returning.

Caramel Macadamia Nut With Hazelnut Cream

Another amazing cake from Kona Kakes. My family and I have been ordering cakes from here for over 20 years now. The owner Janice is absolutely the best! Our most recent cake order was for my daughters 18th birthday / graduation party. We had a special request for plumeria flowers to be used on our cake and Janice took care of everything. They offer many different flavors, but the Caramel Macadamia Nut With Hazelnut Cream is by far the best! Thank you Janice and team for the awesome cake!

Guava strawberry was my fav!

The mini cakes are so unique and so good! Not sure if it was a whipped frosting but it was very light and fluffy! this place is a MUST try! I got 3 of the mini cakes for a friends birthday Guava strawberry was DELICIOUS!!!!!! Ube was SO good it even had little coconut shavings on the top. Lastly I got a Carmel macadamia one! ALL were 12 out of 10 lol everyone loved them. I will definitely be back especially for the guava one!

UP Wedding Cake

Janice is amazing and so creative! My coordinator recommended Kona Kakes after a less than ideal experience elsewhere, and I'm so glad that she did! Since I had never tried Hawaiian cake before and didn't have time for a tasting, I took a chance by ordering a UP-themed wedding cake. When I saw the cake, I was absolutely blown away by how beautiful it was. Janice delivered! And the taste? It was the best cake I have ever had in my life. We chose the Chocolate Caramel Crunch Drip Cake, Pineapple Macadamia Nut, and Caramel Macadamia Nut with Hazelnut Cream. Everyone at my wedding raved about it. I wholeheartedly recommend Kona Kakes to anyone looking for a truly special and delicious cake!

We loved our cake!! The flavoring alone was the star of the show. We wish we had leftovers because it was that good. Thanks for all the help with planning for our wedding it turned out perfect!

Kona Kakes has been a staple in our household for birthday celebrations and for good reason! Our favorites are the Guava Cream, Piña Colada with rum, and POG. Their cakes are always delicious with just the right amount of sweetness, never too sugary, always perfectly balanced. Naturally, we chose Kona Kakes for our wedding cake as well. We ordered a small cake for our cake-cutting moment (and to save for later) along with a half-sheet cake for our guests. Both turned out absolutely fantastic, not only beautiful, but also incredibly tasty. Our guests couldn't stop raving about how good it was and many wanting seconds! We worked with Janice (owner?) and she was such a pleasure to work with. Responsive, helpful, flexible and so kind throughout the process. Kona Kakes will always be our go-to for cakes, no matter the celebration. Highly recommend!

Variety of mini cakes
Viviana G.

Couldn't decide on what flavor of cake to order so I decided to purchase a variety of mini cakes they had on display. I was most excited to try the caramel macadamia nut as I keep hearing amazing reviews about it. It was moist, however I felt like it was way to sweet to enjoy. I have a sweet tooth so I was pretty surprised. Their salted caramel white chocolate and ube cakes were my favorite. Super moist and perfectly sweet without being too much. One thing I wasn't too happy about was that they are not very punctual with their store hours, specifically opening. I dont live close, so I had planned to go when it opened at 11. I arrived about 5 mins after opening and it was dark and doors were locked. I was confused and had to check my phone for the store hours. I waited about 15 mins after that and still no luck. I even tried calling the store, and nobody picked up. I ended up leaving and calling a couple of hours later and they said they were open that day but depending on who opens they might get there a little later than 11. Thats seems pretty unprofessional. I guess if you decide to come here maybe don't come at opening or make sure you place an order ahead of time if you do plan on going at opening time. Otherwise, good luck.

Made it before they closed ! Had the sweetest lady greet me ! Hands down one of the best cakes in San Diego ! I got two the chocolate macadamia and sea salt caramel macadamia cake !! So delicious !!! Going to try their guava cake next ! Cake was moist and right balance between decadent and light ! Gives this place a try

I heard about them from a big birthday bash where they had a huge Caramel macadamia nut cake. It was very good so I wanted to check them out myself. Back in the day, they also served Hawaiian food but that is no longer the case. My friend and I came here hoping to get the best of both sweet and savory but had to get our brunch on elsewhere. Afterwards we both came back to enjoy the lovely treats here though. I got a small cake from the display while my friend inquired about any cakes that were readily available aside from the smaller ones. She was in luck! The cakes are moist and flavorful without being overly sweet. There is a good reason that they are fully sustained on getting custom orders of their cakes alone!

We chose Kona Kakes Mango Mousse for our wedding cake as I do not like traditional cake. They had amazing reviews on Reddit and we had high expectations. The cake was incredible! Everyone loved it and we were surprised and excited to have leftovers. Ordering was fast and easy and very affordable!

The most delicious cake ever. Caramel macadamia with hazelnut creme. Best ever!
Vicki K.

We ordered a half sheet caramel macadamia cake with hazelnut creme. It was incredible. This cake was twice the height of a regular sheet cake, so it was a lot. It was for a retirement party and everyone enjoyed how light but so very tasty this cake was. I will definitely be ordering from Kona Kakes in the future. Worth every cent!

Ask the Community - Kona Kakes

Do you have premade cakes?

They don't have big (party size) pre made cakes but they do sell smaller individual cake portions. They're typically their most popular flavors.

How many people do the cake sizes feed?

Yes they do make premade cakes. And highly suggest to make pre-order coz they ran out everyday and only makes so much batches for those small size cakes. Worthy for your taste. 😁

For example, some other specialty bakeries/shops are charging similar prices for cakes and cheesecakes that are much simpler. In comparison, Extraordinary Dessert cakes take 3-4 days to make, have 6-8 alternating layers, and are typically adorned with edible gold and/or flowers. The key is to find which items you like and which are okay to pass on next time. What we ried this time: -Match Misu Cake (7/10): ricotta cake layers soaked in matcha and layered with marscapone whipped cream. This one was pretty good and ranks in my middle to high range. I only wish there was more matcha flavor (maybe if you dine in and get the sauce, this would help) or the matcha was paired with another flavor ... either go fruity (maybe a raspberry sauce, strawberry pieces, white peach pieces, or like a peach oolong cream layer) or go chocolately/coffee (maybe had some crushed up chocolate covered espresso beans). My go to's: -Ivoire Royale (10/10) - my ultimate favorite still. If you like light desserts, white chocolate, berries, and moist vanilla cake, thus one is for you. Classy and unpretentious -Shangrila (10/10) - my other favorite and will make you feel like a princess with all the pink chocolate curls. A little bit adventurous and innocently elegant. Ones to skip: -Au Chocolate / La Bete Noire / Dame Chocolate - get the Viking instead. That's my favorite of all their chocolate cakes -Lemon ricotta - get the Passionfruit Ricotta instead -Torta misu - the matcha misu is better. The tortilla misuse made me want a regular piece of tirmaisu than a cake version -Coconut cream - not bad, not amazing though

Also just so everyone is aware they're also liars just to mention & stupid.. she tells us her name is Karen thinking we don't know the owners name lol .. She was at the register at 7:20pm and was extremely rude and dismissive after we placed our order, especially regarding a child's dietary restrictions and health concerns. We politely asked if it would be possible to purchase a small cup of fruit , even just a couple strawberries cut up, because one child in our group cannot have sweets due to very strict dietary restrictions . Instead of simply saying they were unable to accommodate the request or offering another option, we were told to "go somewhere else," despite already spending the amount we did . The complete lack of professionalism and basic customer service was honestly shocking. It's disappointing to be treated that way at a place we have supported so consistently. This place has been going downhill , management for this place needs to step up .

Flour Atelier is a small bakery right next to the hovering Mitsuwa. They carry two refrigerated sections' worth of original treats and pastries, many with Asian flavors such as their ube leche flan and calamansi cheesecake. I'm a gluten free girly nowadays, but when I could eat their desserts I did love their cheesecake: a balance of cream-to-crust is important to me. And those flavors? Standout. Hard to find many other places. They also have tea and coffee, and my husband and I LOVE their hojicha latte, which boasts a nice earthy-to-sweet ratio. If you want a grounded flavor without getting another coffee, try the hojicha latte! The store itself is quite small, selling sweet treats, drinks, and even flowers through a collaboration with a florist. They have about 4 tables outside -- recommended for small parties, unless you come when it's empty with a group. BIG TIP: Bring your mother or mother-in-law here to impress -- that is, if she likes cute, sweet treats and a tea party vibe! Many reviews have noted this, and I would have to agree, especially for the size (crepe cake slices) and/or simple design (two layer naked cakes). We ended up trying a slice of their taro crepe cake. It was tasty - light, smooth, and included real taro - and had alternating layers of cream and taro; however, we were surprised with how small it was in person (vs photos) for $12.50 before tax. This is just below the price for an Extraordinary Desserts cake slice, which is not only bigger and more complex, but also made fresh. We noticed the crepe cake slice we got had that dusting of ice sparkles, indicating it was frozen and defrosting, and additionally, as it defrosted, the more it started leaning. If you haven't tried Yiko Yiko, it's worth still checking out. That said, I think you'll be satisifed after one or two visits.

Lines are always better with a friend and even though we all arrived before opening there was still a healthy line. I was really excited, to finally get to check them out, I saw on their socials that a new chef had taken residency and that they came with some Filipino flair. As a fellow Filipino I definitely wanted to support. I ended up ordering a lumpia roll, ube butter ensaymada, a halo halo tart and a egg sando sandwich along with an iced matcha with honey, with tip my total was $48, which isn't horrible considering these are meant to be higher quality pastries. My girlfriends and I found a table and decided we would share, I shared my egg sando sandwich and the lumpia roll, while they shared their ube butter ensaymada and the turon kouign amann. My matcha, was a horrible, it was a muddy green and really lacked any matcha flavor, my friend didn't like her matcha either and she had the miso caramel matcha. I didn't even finish my matcha and I can really take one down. We joked about how we should have opted for the orange juice instead. Now for the pastries, I was really underwhelmed by them, the ensaymada was just fine, I honestly cannot remember the taste of it, it lacked something. The egg sando sandwich, the filling was plentiful and flavorful BUT the bread was dry, was that potato bread? The texture was off for me and I ended up just scooping out the filling and eating it like that. Where the sando had a good amount of filling the lumpia roll lacked it, it was so sparse I figured it would be more like a sausage roll so I was taken aback by how little there was in it. Flavors were fine, the pastry was buttery but I just wanted a little more. The one pastry we agreed was better than the rest was the turon kouign amann, the crunchy bits of sugar was so reminiscent of turon but the filling, for me was like uncooked banana bread batter, that threw me off entirely. It was better, but not the filling. So overall, I would say it was okay, I guess for the costs it just didn't meet my expectations.

The middle section had pistachio frangipane (or it looked like it) with coarsely chopped pistachios that brought another layer of crunch! Then to top it all off, it had pistachio cream on top of the cookie! I only wish I got another one. CAPPUCCINO It was okay. But love the foam! It was frothy and foamy! PAVLOVA The meringue was a bit too hard and too sweet and the pastry cream was overwhipped. Loved the fresh fig and blueberries though. I was looking forward to eating pavlova and this was very disappointing! KOUIGN AMANN Very buttery and sticky! Crispy on the outside. Every bite was not dry, but chewy. There was this sticky and chewy texture that wasn't unpleasant, yet it wasn't fully flaky like a croissant. But glad it was not dry! The kouign amann was not as tall like others I've tried, but I preferred it this way because it was not dry. The last kouign amann I had from Bread Lounge was dryyyy. But bought mine at a coffee shop too. PAIN AU CHOCOLAT Crispy on the outside, but I must have toasted a bit more, so the outside was a bit more toasted than desired. Inside was good. Good dark chocolate. BUTTER CROISSANT Really buttery, flaky, crispy! Ate it next day, so reheated it in the toaster oven to bring a more crispness all around. Really enjoyed this! Adding butter and jam is so good! LEMON MERINGUE Meringue had a strong eggy smell and flavor, the lemon was tangy, but not enough to rid of the eggy smell and flavor. The tart was hard and almost stale. I took a few bites and threw the rest out. PAIN SUISSE Chocolate flavor. Crispy on the outside, fluffy like a light spongy cake inside. Enjoyed this! CUSTOMER SERVICE Got there early afternoon. There was only one person in front of me. Good service overall. Quick service. Hits and misses of the various pastries I've tried. It will not deter me from trying their pastries though, as the really good ones were really good! Would love to return! Especially for that Choco Chip Pistachio Cookie!
