    New front end

I started researching body shops after a collision with a deer. A friend recommended Husteads in Berkeley and they were on my insurance company's approved list. I'm glad I chose them. Tim was very helpful during the initial appointment. When they were assessing the damage, I mentioned my wife's car had a small dent in the right front fender that I wanted to get an estimate for. Tim guessed it would cost around $1,500 if they took it in. But he said he could make it look better with a little paint remover and polish. 10 minutes later, the dent was barely visible. No Charge! The repair on my car took a little longer than anticipated, mainly because they had to scrounge parts for my '17 Volt from various places in Nor. Cal. But when the car was done, it looked like new. Kudos to USAA and Husteads for saving my lovely car from the junk yard.

It's conveniently…read morelocated walking distance to Enterprise Rental, which is a preferred rental car company for my insurance. Both times, dropping of my vehicle in the morning was difficult bc of a vendor (the same vendor each time) was blocking the driveway with their large truck double parked so I wasn't able to pull in. I had to circle around the block multiple times, finally found parking nearby - only to have to move my car into the garage after the vendor left. I understand they are located in a company space, but having an efficient way to drop off vehicles seems like it should be a priority. The first time I brought a car in, the damage was repaired quickly and the work was good. As a result, the next time one of my vehicles needed work, I brought it to Caliber. However, this time my experience was incredibly disappointing. When I picked up my car, I could see the body damage was repaired, but my car had some unsightly white residue on it. It was promptly taken back and cleaned after I pointed it out. I didn't think too much of it and now wish I had taken the time to examine the inside of my car before leaving. The interior of my car was filthy - not how I dropped it off. The third row was lowered to expand the trunk area - also not how I left it. There were dirty dust/scuff marks and drops of yellow paint. Some sort of sticky white residue on the interior panels, too. And "Juan" left his Starbucks drink in a cup holder in the back - which turned moldy. This was the first time I received a vehicle back in worse condition than I left it - and unfortunately, I did not realize it until my kids opened the door to hop into the back. After my service, I received a generic email from Caliber inquiring about the quality of work and customer service. I left a description of the dirty condition and attached photos . I did not receive a response back. So, I've not returned.

Berkeley Auto Body is one of our insurance companies' options for car repair and, given their Yelp reviews, we went with them. In both cases, they were very responsive, completed the work quickly (and well!) and also communicated well throughout the process. The intake process for the car was easy and thorough - Lupe took a ton of pictures to document the damage and also walked me through the damage she could visually see and where they would be looking more closely for more substantial damage. Everybody at the shop is very professional and friendly. I appreciate that they are responsive both via phone and email.

So I've gotten to learn a lot about the insurance game. Brendon, Brianna and Jordan knew I wasn't in a rush and wanted everything replaced w OEM parts naturally. They played the insurance game w the adjuster, looking out for me. The way it seems to work is, the insurerers lowball the damages, and send non-OEM, aftermarket parts and hope the body shop and customer don't notice. Just anything to get the work done as cheaply as possible. The team at Panel Craft were so patient and communicative. Consistently sending back the parts and requesting that the parts be OEM, as well as insuring that the damages were all attended to. For example, the first appraisal completely didn't even take into account frame damage. Panel Craft did their own appraisal of damages. Eventually the Caddy was totaled, when the first appraisal from the insurers just took into account cosmetic damages. Secondly, they found subframe damage in Lexus and made sure to take it to a mechanic to prove that it needed replacing. Was it minor? Sure. But like Jordan says, we all pay a lot of money for insurance, and we need the vehicles restored to like-new condition when awful stuff happens. The team consistently kept me up to date, answered phone calls, and were extremely patient with the insurance companies shenanigans. They didn't rush the job or just slap on the aftermarket parts to keep the job moving. Instead they made sure the work was done right. Were steadfast and in the end the Lexus looks beautiful, with great color matching and paint. As good as new! They are a really nice family run business. Their father (up the street at the original Panel Craft location) gave me with free advice a decade back. (Dave, another really cool dude, who I like talking to.) I remembered and made sure to reciprocate with my business and I'm glad I did. Really great experience with these guys, after an incredibly tilting series of events with my cars. Highly recommend bringing your body work to them. Clean shop, friendly people, all of them stayed on point did great work.

Let that sink in for a minute BEFORE you give these kids your car. Today I noticed parts of my interior were loose and were not like that prior to giving my car to PanelCraft So I pulled the dead pedal / stomp plate off and noticed GLOBS of silicone hot glue behind it. This is the same exact glue panel Craft also used to repair the tabs on my headlights. So I guess THEY broke these pieces, claimed they were damaged in the accident then also broke interior parts that NEVER NEEDED TO BE REMOVED! Used freaking HOT GLUE, not epoxy to a real plastic welder to fix them improperly then like Ed about it at time of delivery and used a two bit attorney to get away with it! I've also notified cad sevral areas of the car that were not repaired by the shop had mismatched paint pen used to fill in minor scratches. These were NOT there at time of drop off. My strong feeling are this damage was done after paint by whoever AnelCraft contracted to detail my car and cover it in snake oil at time of deliver to get it off their hands. These kids are HACKS!! Panel craft will DESTROY YOUR CAR!!!

I was referred to PanelCraft by my mechanic who has had a life long relationship with this family. Once dropper my car off nothing felt right, Jordan the employee who works between both shop is overly eager to help and messes up communication every step of the way. David lies to your face telling your every story you might want to believe but in the end, NOTHING happens the way he say it will. Panel Craft had my car for 8 months, it sat at Berkeley in the back yard for 6 of those. Then Dave pawned the car off on his toxic AF daughter Brianna who screwed EVERYTHING UP! Along with his son Brendin who seems to think he knows what he's doing with cars has an attitude but can't seem to fit a bumper or read instructions to save his life' Once my car was transferred over to the Oakland shop without my approval I got a call from Brendin and Brianna ( they share the same brain) YELLING at me saying "we never wanted to work on this car to begin with!!" Crying like some spoiled child saying the rebar supplied for my bumper was a rear not a front - totally incorrect!! Brendin then starts in saying they can't fit the lip or bumper - So I take a day off of work to go down w/ my mechanic to go over the parts needed to be installed. Turns out it was a Seat lip that can be fit to the car but was in the wrong box. The correct lip was in a giant 42x24" box from Volkswagen that they never opened - along with the instructions for installing the bumper on the car w/ all needed parts outlined with part #'s and pictures !! The paint work was rushed! After getting the car back there's more scratches on areas they worked on but didn't paint ( inside door jams) and on the roof that were never there to begin with. They DESTROYED my interior- ripped my drivers seat , ripped a huge chunk of foam out of the inside, took interior panels off ( dead pedal foot rest) that didn't need to be removed and broke them in the process then used hot glue to try and fix them WITHOUT TELLING Me!! Upon time of delivery at another business shop on their property NOT PANEL CRAFT, Brianna openly accused me of insurance fraud in front of customers at this other business. Has continued to slander my name saying "we read this about Brad on the internet" But to the point - They never completed the work paid for by insurance on my car, damaged the car wile in their possession , lied about EVERYTHING!, left visible scratches under the clear coat in the repaired areas, lied some more!!, painted over accident damage and never really "repaired anything" then dumped the car at another business shop for assembly ! Then cut ties with that business as well and won't even look at their employees as they pass them on the freeway in traffic going to work!! This situation was completely brought on PanelCraft by their poor work quality, poor communication, inability to understand jobs or read instructions and generally are some of the most angry and toxic people over ever come in contact with!' Be warned this is a sinking ship that's ripping off their customers to say in business as long as they can !! Hi Dave !!

THE GOOD: This small…read moreshop is ran by a guy name Earl. Seems to have been in business for quite some time. I go to him on a Monday 10/20/25 for a smog diagnosis that he charged $95, about the standard price. He was able to complete the inspection and gave me a diagnosis back same day (approx. 4 hours total time). He offered a free throttle body clean because upon their inspection, the throttle was dirty and had a lot of carbon build up. I was notified the vehicle would be ready for pick up at 4:15PM, I told him I was going to be there 4:30PM. When I had arrived, earl was nice enough to wait around after they had closed for me to receive my vehicle. THE BAD: After I paid him for the diagnosis, he told me what was wrong and gave me the keys, then promptly left with a friend that was awaiting him. Right after I pulled off in my car, something was awfully wrong. The idle RPMS was sitting at almost 2K RPMS on a cold start and would come to about 1500-1900RPMS the entire time. As I was driving while hitting the gas you could hear what sounded like was a vacuum leak somewhere and car has some minor lost power. I call Earl immediately after, but he was already gone from the shop; Earl told me to just bring it in first thing in the morning. I bring the vehicle back to Earl on 10/21/25 a day later and present to him what had sounded like a vacuum leak. He was quick to check into but also VERY QUICK TO DENY RESPONSIBILITY. I told him that the vehicle was 110% not like this when I had brought it in and they definitely may have knocked a hose or two loose or something. They first told me they would not doing anything like that, and wanted to run a smoke down test in-front of me to check for vacuum leaks. I was told by Earl, they only took off the air intake boot to access the throttle body to spray carb cleaner and there's absolutely no way they caused any of the issues presented. They run the test, and there shows no leaks from the smoke. They also run a brake clean spray to see if it will choke the RPMs down (another method to check for vacuum leaks). We go for a couple of test drives back and forth, the mechanic that Earl has working for him, poor guys age is catching up to him and cannot hear a huge vacuum leak for his life. Earl claims to hear it as well, but cannot figure out what it is. Earl first blames the brake booster, and is adamantly asserting that he or his shop did not cause this. ***Earl THEN DISCOVERS A MISSING connection on my VSV, but the old mechanic claims it won't cause any vacuum leaks or noises and just caps it off.***. They then proceed to say the noise and high RPMS is an exhaust leak and show me where it is leaking. You can see exhaust smoke coming out the pipe right below the manifold but I wouldn't say it was sufficient enough to be causing such a vacuum leak noise. They adjudicate the issue is an exhaust leak, therefore, they did not cause it and cannot fix it anyways. It is worth mentioning I am not by any means a mechanic. I am what you call a garage monkey. I understand some concepts, but no way am I to be at the SUPPOSED level these guys are at. I have my doubts so I go home and take apart the air intake boot and further inspect the throttle body. There it is, lo and behold a vacuum line disconnected from the throttle body that was suppose to be connected the VSV. To summarize everything , Earl is a truthfully a honest guy it seems, but is seemingly incompetent on the work and guys working for him do rushed, shoddy, crude, messy work. It's not hard taking off an air intake boot and reconnecting all necessary hose lines back. Paid $95 for some problems they claim they didn't cause and don't believe the customer, ONLY to take it back home and undo the bad work they did. Crazy stuff and would not go back. Be wary of what you're doing here.
