We do NOT recommend Hustead's Auto Body Shop in downtown Berkeley! We had the worst experience one can ever imagine. After being rear ended, we took the car to Hustead's Auto Body Shop to be repaired. Their workmanship and quality control was pathetic. We were amazed that they even tried to pass off the repair, as being satisfactory - The misalignment of the newly replaced rear bumper was obvious. The inside of the car was dirty from them working on the car i.e. footprints on the seats etc. etc. They had not cleaned the car before returning it to us. We had to take our car back twice for the shop to rectify the problem, and even then we were not happy. After replacing the misaligned after-market 'new' bumper with a manufacturers new one, and repainting everything again, they still they did not put the bumper back correctly. It was STILL misaligned - my husband crawled under the car and immediately noted that some of the fasteners were missing. That a 76 year old man felt he needed to crawl under a car to see what would have been instantly visible to anybody when the car was up on a hoist was quite remarkable, and a further testament to Hustead's quality control. No pride in their workmanship! They simply don't care! The adjuster at the Insurance Company said they took Husted's Auto Body Shop of the list of recommended Auto Body Shops. We are tired of dealing with Hustead's Auto Body Shop, and their incompetence! Take our advice and steer clear from Husted's Auto Body Shop. read more

I received great service here. The admins and the mechanics are very friendly and communicative. They have great customer service and give you individual attention, unlike other autobody shops who rush you out the door and do a two-bit job (looking at you Firestone). Hustead's did their best to make sure I knew about every step of the repair process. They fixed my car in 2 days, which was record-breakingly fast. They also helped me out by putting on my license plates. They even gave me a complimentary bottle of wine after I picked up my car! The only thing that I would have appreciated being informed on more was specifics about the repair process. I was initially told that I would get a replacement part, but they ended up repairing my current part (un-denting it, giving it a paint job etc). I wish I had been given the option to choose what I wanted to do, or at least informed on the switch before it was made. Overall, though, my car looks brand new again and I'm very happy with their work! read more

Terrible business, terrible service. This outfit failed to repair my car, despite making attempts to do so on SIX DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. Each time, they claimed it was fixed, and each time, they took the car back to work on, admitting as much! What kind of shop puts a person back into a car, knowing it's not fixed, claiming it is, and then doing it again, FIVE MORE times??!! Just wanted to take the time to appreciate Husteads for their amazing service. I had a scheduled repair for a claim through insurance. In the couple of days before my appointment someone had busted one of my windows to break into my car. When I brought the car in, they quickly added a window repair to my service and had a quote for it within minutes. My rental car was delayed in picking me up from the shop, so one of their employees drove me to pick it up instead! Throughout the whole experience Vincent and the rest of the staff anticipated and exceeded all of my needs. Took my car here to get body shop repair since it was close and had good reviews. Honestly, not the best experience I've had with a body shop and will likely not return. After taking some time to fix the car (about 3 weeks, which not entirely Hustead's fault since parts have to come in), I finally got it back and there was seemingly one fault after another. WHICH when you get your car back after having a repair is not the best feeling in the world. 1) The engine light came on as he was delivering the car. It was a code that hadn't been cleared, but like c'mon why isn't this checked and cleared before I get the car. Still made me nervous as to if there's something going on that's actually an issue or if they didn't do something right. 2) I find out the horn isn't working and the ambient temp sensor. I take it back and they look at the horn thru the grill and see it's connected and check fuses, they look good. I'm told that the horn is faulty and I'll have to buy a new one (quoted $120 for a $60 horn). At this point, I decided to do the repair myself because it was fairly easy and I didn't want to have them sit on my car for another week while I'm paying rental and needed to be out of the state. When go to take off my bumper to install the new parts, I notice there's a cable that' just hanging loose. The techs didn't plug the cables together! So simple! What's frustrating is that had the technicians followed the checklist that was left in the front seat of the car (one of which says 'horn') that QA's to make sure everything in the car is in working order, they could have solved this right away. Now I'm out 20% of the cost of the parts that I ordered since I'm charged a restocking fee. Honestly, the bumper was easy enough to take off for an amateur that they could have done it when I brought the car back and checked themselves instead of being lazy and looking thru the grill with a flashlight (the cables were on the other side of where the horn was btw). It was just laziness and poor workmanship. Very disappointed in the experience. (BTW Melinda is super nice though.. and if you come here I hope that they've improved on their QA'ing before returning the car). (Update) The director of ops called me and offered to help make it right. I am pleased to know that this customer service exists and they take the feedback seriously. btw they didn't tell me to take the review down or anything either. read more

Absolutely had no idea how my bodywork would turn out, but I read the yelps and felt leary at first. Once I took my car in for an estimate, the only complaint I could have is that no one contacted me about bringing my vehicle in for service, I had to call and make an appointment, at which time I was told they were super busy thus the reason for slipping through the cracks. When I did drop off my vehicle, I was happy to hear about the progress, they contacted me thankfully, and I received my vehicle a week later. They cleaned my car inside and out (super impressed with this), my leased vehicle looked just like new again. So happy I chose Husteads!! Definitely will use them again if ever needed (hopefully no time soon). read more

Catalytic converter theft victim here. I went through Geico to one of the shops they partner with and chose Husteads. Cat's have been on back order since the wide-spread theft increase during the last year. Husteads kept me pretty well updated throughout the month-long wait for the backordered cat to come in. When it came in they got the job done same-day. A little more regular communication would have helped. Part way through the guy handling my work order left and so I didn't hear from them while his work was transferred to another manager. I just sent my daughter to school in Berkeley with a family car. As soon as she got there she realized that there was a hose loose underneath the car. I called Husteads to book an appointment. I spoke with Dustin who was super friendly, helpful and responsive. She took the car in today and it turns out something was loose. BUT they secured it for her without charge and were very kind to her. She said they even set up a chair for her to wait on outside! The appt was very quick as well. I hate wasting time, hate unnecessary conversation (they're kind), so working with Husteads was amazing in my book. My passenger side window shedded as I bumped into the pole when I was parking in my car park. I went to Husteads Auto Body the next day and request for a repair after I order the side window. Highly recommend Tim Doherty at Husteads Auto Body on Durant in Berkeley. A window regulator broke in my Audi A3. Tim came out to greet me as soon as I pulled up. He ordered the part, called me the next afternoon to say the part had arrived, and got me in the following morning to replace it. I was able to wait for my car while the work was being done and Tim kept me apprised at each stage of the repair. Less than 90 minutes later I was back on the road but not before Tim made sure every smudge was gone from the window. He's a really good guy and a total pro. Ask for Tim! read more

My back bumper was sagging on one side because I got rear ended. I called Husted's to see if I could get an appointment for an estimate to repair it. They said just stop by, so I did. A young man took a quick look at it, went back into the shop, and got his socket wrench. In about 5 minutes, he undid 2 bolts, clipped the bumper back on, and put the bolts back in. I asked what I owed him; he said nothing. He initially refused the tip but I insisted that he take it. His act of kindness ended the 3-month pain-in-the-butt insurance incident I'd been dealing with. It's so rare to receive such old-school kind & generous treatment, anywhere. I will definitely go there first if my car needs more work, and recommend them to friends & family. After all of the great reviews I was disappointed. A car swiped the side of my car and I brought it in for repairs. Replacing a few panels and fixing paint. Was told it would be ready on Friday or Monday. Their text message system to keep you up to date on progress is great. Ended up being monday and the communication of when it would be ready wasn't great. The real issue is that when I picked it up, they did a pretty bad job. The glue from the panels was sticking out for the panels, the panels looked warped, and there was a paint chip that wasn't fixed. When I pointed it out to the guy, he responded as if he knew. They said that my insurance company told them this is how it was supposed to be done (not putting new parts on there, but using the old parts) but I was still just confused because the guy even seemed like he knew it looked bad. They said they would call my insurance company and request to be able to use new panels rather than re-use the old panels. A few days went by and I hadn't heard anything. I called my insurance company and they said they never heard from the body shop. I explained to them the issue and they said that that was not the guidance that they give and they were also upset of the poor workmanship. This then lead to a string of bad communication and follow ups between the body shop and my insurance company. They eventually fixed it, but I had to call my insurance company several times to get them to follow up with the body shop (insurance company said body shop was supposed to follow up with me, but they never did). Insult to injury, they got some paint on the leather inside my car. I would avoid. read more

I can not say enough good things about Husteads. Someone drove into the front of my 2014 Mercades while it was parked in front of my house. My insurance company recommended Husteads. They reached out to me within an hour of filing my claim on line. They invited me to come in the same day for an appraisal. Great COVID-19 precautions in place, you stay in your car out front and they come to you. Vince looked at the car and said "I can fix this for you for free". I went back a couple of days later and they did just that in 20 minutes. I hope I don't need anymore body work but if I do I'll happily return and pay my deductible. This is a great business.
