When traveling to central IL 2 things need to make a way into my belly. Those two things are a whole fired catfish, and a tenderloin sandwich. Today's visit to the Hungry Moose was for the latter of the two. After much discussion with friends and family alike I was to to head here with f I wanted to leave happy and full. Little did I know this would end up like a full tenderloin buffet on a plate. The size of this beast made me feel small for the fist time in my life. I'm full sized man with a appetite to match, but this in fact was too big for my needy belly. The flavor itself was quite good too! Having tried many tenderloins around town over the years this one would easily make the podiums. Maybe not the very best but bronze is a respectable medal to come home with as well! A crispy corn flake breading fried to a golden brown was awesome Just needed a little spicing up with salt and pepper. The side of onion straws on the other had were flawless. Hand fills of these curly bits couldn't reach my mouth fast enough. In the end I ordered a huge meal, enjoyed it and have another huge meal in the to-go box. Came here with my girlfriend for brunch one Saturday morning. After waiting about 15 minutes we were seated. That's when it went downhill. The waitresses were extremely rude, and could have cared less about the people in the restaurant, but standing chatting and acting like no one was there. The food came out and it was room temperature and very bland. I ordered the skillet and it was overly bland and wasn't worth it. The biscuits and gravy too were blah and seemed to be store bought. My girlfriend ordered the breakfast burrito and she wasn't happy when it came out less than lukewarm. When looking for trivia and just a night out with the family, we usually try to hit local joints to enjoy and try food from. Unfortunately in this case, fries, chips, chicken and tenderloins were burnt literally to a crisp. They were dry, unseasoned and had a bad taste with obvious burn marks on the food. When addressed with the staff, we were informed that there is nothing anyone can do to help. In all honesty we were not looking for any discounts or price deals, but to state that something with all of our meals was off. Unfortunately, this is a case in which nobody in our household plans to return in the future. She was friendly, bubbly and very informative regarding what ingredients were in the items we were wanting to order. The restaurant was clean and tidy with an open floor plan. There is a nice bar that was clean, organized and well lit. There is also a salad bar available. There are 3 eating areas, including the bar area, a side dinning area and an outdoor dining area. They also have a game room for customers if they wish to play slots. The restrooms are clean, well stocked and in the woman's room, tampons are available if a customer has a surprise visit. Starting with the appetizers - We ordered Onion Straws and Pickle Spears. Both came to us hot and well plated. Upon our first taste, we were pleasantly surprised at the flavor and crispness of the breading, especially on the pickles. Next, I had a Lil Salad. Let me say that it was anything BUT little. The lettuce was freshly cut and crisp with no hard white stalks left in the bowl. Tomatoes were fresh and cut into slices and then 1/4s. Fresh grated cheese and homemade ranch dressing topped this beautiful yet simple start to my meal. Entres were: 1. Eggs Benny, they were plated well, hot and soft. My husband took no time in devouring this beautiful breakfast. 2. Pulled Pork BBQ with Moose Chips - At first look, we were shocked to see just how large of a portion you get. The Pulled Pork was fresh made, meat was soft and not over cooked. Bread was soft and not soggy. Chips were crisp and very delicious. 3. Hungry Moose Burger and Fries - Again, the portion size was unexpected. The burger was well done but not dry or greasy. The lettuce was still crisp on the burger and the tomato was fresh. We were greeted by the friendly staff on arrival and was told to sit wherever we wanted. Unfortunately we asked about the soup and was told they did not have any today. I ordered the Moose-Shoe and my guest had the patty melt with homemade chips. The chips were outstanding and gave a very large supply. The server was great and actually recommended trying the cheese dip with the chips. Unfortunately the burger from both plates were overdone and stopped us from rating our experience a five. Believe the reviews! I came in from out of state for work and decided on the Hungry Moose based on the portion sizes I saw on the Yelp photo section - especially with the pork tenderloin! Wow! I had my mind set walking in that I would get the Chicken Bacon and Cheese sandwich without lettuce and tomato. The very friendly waitress asked if I wanted BBQ sauce instead of those...ummm, of course! Shortly thereafter, my meal came out and it was practically overflowing off the plate! I got a side of the Moose Chips and I had enough to fill a medium sized Ruffles bag!! The sandwich was made with a homemade fried chicken breast which added so much to the sandwich. The fresh bun was a nice touch as well - not your standard hamburger bun...that's for sure! My husband and I had dinner here last night for the first time. The food was delicious and plentiful. I had the pulled pork sandwich with onion straws. That is a go to sandwich for me and it can make or break a restaurant for me. So many restaurants leave in hunks of fat and inedible meat in their pulled pork. I am very pleased to say that none of that was in this sandwich! The onion straws were perfect. My husband had the lunch sized pork tenderloin and it was still huge. Our server Joni was great. When they moved to the new location on Sterling, it took a few weeks for the crowds to die down before we stopped by. It is the same but bigger and better. We tried the breakfast, which was okay, but I wouldn't say the quality was proportionate to the price. We waited longer than expected to be asked for our orders. The food was under-seasoned. Of the four orders at our table, two were incorrect. We did not expect to wait 50 minutes for four egg-based breakfast plates and were pretty frustrated with the amount of chit-chatting the servers and bartenders were doing as we waited to place our order and were not checked on during the 50 minute wait for our food until a member of our party worked to get her attention. The restaurant did not appear to be understaffed; there were many empty tables. I'm not sure if our order didn't get put in or got missed by the cook(s), but we watched three other tables who ordered after us get their plates. In the end, we ended up having to ask for an ETA on our order and for our bills and to-go boxes to be brought with our food. We had 10 minutes to eat before we needed to make it to an activity we had scheduled--it seems as though our allotment of an hour and fifteen minutes should have been enough, but unfortunately was not. I have to start by giving the old "warning" about the area. I know nothing about the area in terms of safety, but it is a run down part of town. We found ourselves questioning the Yelp reviews as we drove in to check this place out. My wife perked up when she saw the comedy club, then clenched her teeth at the strip club next door to the comedy club. But in all fairness, this little place was a diamond in the rough for our party of 5 adults and 2 children. (my brother in law still refers to it as a bar, stating the only places he knows on Farmington Rd are bars, to give an idea of the area) Once you get passed the surrounding area, the restaurant itself is quite friendly and clean. The seating isn't entirely plentiful, just about a dozen or so tables and booths. The staff was extremely friendly, and the customers seemed to be about 50% regulars, which made for an inviting atmosphere. Everyone in our group ordered breakfast, everything from eggs, to omelets, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, you name it. Everything was fantastic, which is a real statement given the group I was with. I'm not naming names, but it is rare to get zero complaints from all of them combined! As a matter of fact, the food along with the cheap pricing actually made it very tempting to return here for dinner before we left Peoria that night as we returned home. If you are looking for a great meal at a good price, Hungry Moose should be on your short list if you live in the Peoria area. When I'm in Peoria to visit my son I like to explore the town for special places to eat. I thought this could be a 5 star place by the looks of the menu. I ordered the giant buttermilk pancakes and they tasted somewhat like meat grease. Please consider dedicating a portion of your flat top clean for pancakes in the morning. My son said that the skillet breakfast was a bit too greasy and the large skillet wasn't much bigger than the mini skillet, just a larger plate. The service was not attentive but sufficient and a roof leak wasn't tended to, not even a bucket. Interesting little set up. Long tables good for groups in one room and a bar in another connected room. The band plays right in front of the bar, so if you're eating you can hear the band and might sit to face them but the other people in your group will be facing a wall. For $8.95, you get egg, sausage, bacon, hash browns or country potatoes, toast, and either two pancakes or biscuits and gravy. Everything was fantastic.
