Not overly impressed. Burger patties were like rubber, almost like a pre-made patty from sams club, it was kind of weird. Bun, and condiments were fine. Talk about home-town, old school! This is a small, run by a family business that has been in Ocala for many years. They offer the basics: burgers, fries, onion rings and shakes. Since I had a hankering for a great shake, I decided to go by. I ordered the small burger and a vanilla malt. Everything was tasty and good. They even threw in a small candy cane in my bag. This place is an Ocala staple!! I have been eating here my entire life. Hand spun shakes, fries, burgers all of them are great. Don't believe these reviews from people from out of town expecting 5 star service, it's a drive-thru. Family owned and operated, do they take their time? Yes they do but you're going to get consistently good food when it's done cooking, they don't have a heat lamp keeping burgers lukewarm like chains do. Burgers are pretty good. SERVICE IS AWFUL!!!!! Once I went there and the person inside was just talking to a customer at the window mad made me sit there till Someone else opened up the back window that they don't even use anymore to take my order!!! Then after receiving my food I had to back out of the drive through because the two were still talking at the main drive through window!! How shitty of the employee talking through the window instead of moving her friend to the parking lot!!!!! Visit 2 sat in drive through 10 minutes never even got acknowledged!!!!! So I left !!!! Stopped by here for the first time in years today since it was close to the bike shop I was dropping my bike off at. Now I remember why it's been literally years since I've eaten there. Pulled up to the window and didn't even get acknowledged that I was there for a solid 4 or 5 minutes. I was actually about to pull away when they finally came and took my order. I ordered a Papa Bear with cheese and no tomatoes or onions as well as a large fry. Got back to my office and go to eat the burger and notice right off the bat that there's onions on it. Open it up and there's also tomatoes on it. :mad: Such a simple task, take an order and make it correctly. They weren't even busy as it was almost 3pm. Not to mention the "1/4lb" burger was definitely nowhere near 1/4lb. Another reviewer said the burgers taste like Sonic burgers. I'd eat Sonic over these burgers any day of the week. It just wasn't all that tasty, I'm sure the all juice from the tomato slice didn't help at all. I'm all for supporting local businesses, but I don't get the fascination with this place a lot of people in Ocala have. It's mediocre at best and pretty pricey for what you get. My order was almost $11, for a thin cheeseburger and large fry. Speaking of the fries, they're the only reason I'm giving it 2 stars, as they weren't too bad and I like crinkle cut fries. read more

Got a papa bear with onion rings, corn nuggets, and fries. The burger reminded me of a whopper, just too much condiments on it, meat was bland and bun was soggy. Would rather go to Burger King even though I think Burger King sucks. Best thing this place has going for it is the sides. Corn nuggets were a surprise and the other sides were good. Price was too expensive for the lack of quality in the burger. Do yourself a favor and just grill up your own burgers in the backyard (100x better). read more

They have the best shakes around. I also had sweet potato fries and a mama bear. Both were hot and fresh. They may charge more than your regular fast food restaurant but you have to remember they are a SMALL business. I'm sure they have to pay a lot more than McDonald's or Burger King for their supplies. Go support a small business instead of a corporate giant. read more

Chocolate shakes!!! French fries!! Burgers!!! Love. love love. love love love love!!!! What i also LOVE is that Hungry Bear is off the beaten path --not on the Blvd or on Pine or 200. It's in the middle of the historic center of town. So it can sneak up on you. My mother says that this is the only fast food burger she'll eat! So take that BK! and you, too, McD's! Service is terrible. I'm the only one there (which should have been a clue) took a while for employee to acknowledge I was there to busy talking to one another. Burger and fries was nothing more than sams club members mark brand products cooked in old grease with. O flavor for an overinflated price. i was excited when i moved to town 2 yrs ago, and heard of this place.... Wanted to love it! I LOVE drive IN places, especially those that are 'homemade' type homecooking. this place is not the greatest. I went 2-3 times, trying different things, never relaly happy. Tried fried Chicken sandwich (it was just a tyson formed, round breaded, patty, if that high of quality was even used. Tried the hot dogs. NOT even a BEEF hotdog. It was the lowest form of hotdog, didnt even have PART beef. It was grey and mealy. blecccch! yuck! The cheeseburger? My saving grace??.....maybe??....or so i had hoped! again....eeeeehhh, not great, but not as terrible as the others. ALL i can say, is I wish i HAD YELP back then, wish I knew about yelping, when i was still living in Ocala, before I moved last week! It would have made life so much easier! Off the regular roads slightly and next to the train tracks, but let's just say my visit was mediocre. Nothing fancy about their burgers. To me it tasted like a Sonic burger and not very special. The fries were average bag fries but were hot which was nice. Nothing stood out with anything except the price. Hungry Bear is very pricey for what you actually get. The staff is not very friendly. The burgers and fries used to be pretty good, but I think they have recently changed their burgers, because the last one I had was like rubber. Over worked meat, and not something I will order again. Even my little boy wouldn't eat his, and he loves burgers just like his mommy. The fries are still good, and I will say the food is always hot. Just don't like how "cold" the staff is, and the burger quality has gone down hill. read more

Ok, I officially don't get it. IMO, the Bear has only ONE thing that can possibly keep it alive there, that being, there's not many other quickie places (and they are far from quick) for those that work in that area to grab a burger on a not quite a full lunch hour. Their Mama Bear burger with chesse is $4.50, the smallest shake, $3, Smallest Fries, $3. And you can sit at an uncleaned (I was there at 3:15 FAR past any rush) picnic table. The 5 guys type burgers, top shelf Hardess and SteakNShake are many times better done burgers cheaper, and have the good shakes and fries for Cheaper too. The burger here was fine, just nothing special in the very least. My medium burger with a small shake was about $7.50. That's crazy talk pricing for this type of establishment. read more

I have been wanting to try this place for months and finally got there and will NEVER go back again! They got the idea and concept however their product is seriously inferior and anyone who claims otherwise is full of BS. I'm from Texas and I know what old fashion burgers taste like and this is awful. I ordered the Papa Burger and my friend had the Mama burger, we split large fries and I thought for what we got it was too pricey. The fries were terrible, overcooked and not fresh ones either. The meat is obviously inferior quality. Nothing about this was worth it. We came apon this place while driving around last week.We tried it yesterday.Wanted to love it ! Have to admitt I think it is barely so-so.We thought it was kinda pricey for a burger place.Was almost $18 for two burgers,a shared fries,and 2 sodas.The burgers were not too bad,but not a value for the price.The fries were not crispy,but fat and not totally done throughout.Service was ok but slow,& not super friendly.Never tried the shakes,so cant comment on them.Prob wont go back. read more
