This restaurant has been here forever, but gets really great inspections from the health department despite being an older building. We ordered to-go and ate in the parking lot. What a feast! We ordered their current special: a full slab on payback ribs and 2 sides for a mere $14.99. That was to take home, but we sampled it in the car and no silverware was needed. These ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and juicy and thick. It was hard to remember that these were for later, we wanted them all now! Our sides were fries and baked beans. The beans were good, but the fries were nothing special. My husband got a pulled pork sandwich with green beans and hasn't stopped raving about the green beans the entire time he was eating. He said the sandwich was delicious, too! I like meat cooked well-done, so I ordered a burnt ends sandwich and coleslaw. What a happy surprise that the meat was thinly sliced instead of the usual chunks served at other places! Every single piece of meat was well-cooked, tasty, and not at all fatty or greasy. I'm a fan! The coleslaw was delicious, too! Our to-go ordered was served with a smile, plenty of napkins and silverware and ketchup and salt and pepper and barbecue sauce. After our outdoor concert in the park at the Riley center, Ocala. We decided on Big Rascal BBQ, at NW Blitchton Rd. The waitress responded promptly with our drinks (No Diet Coke) only Coke Zero...No problem for me, but Dawn dislikes the Coke and Pepsi zero products. The Restaurant is nice, clean, spacious and well lighted (a plus for me) The waitstaff, and servers were cordial and professional. Not a big crowd, but it was nice with football on the t.v. and a little country music playing at a nice level. My 1/2 lb burger was cooked and seasoned well, it arrived good and hot too. The cold slaw was good, and tasty. Dawn had the 4 seasons salad, and she said it was good and the grilled chicken was palatable. Overall we had a good meal and decent experience. Yummy, yummy, yummy! We had the Pulled Pork BBQPlatter. It was the special. Tender, lean, & oh so tasty it didn't even need one of their 4 specialty barbecue sauces (which I might add were all very good!) Our waitress was full of fine souther hospitality serving up our hot meals efficiently with a smile. The mac & cheese was different than what I am accustomed to. It was dotted with jalapeño sausage, just enough to add flavor. Greens were good & decaf coffee was strong & served hot just the was I like it. The old Western decor was clean with easy access. Stop here on our way down home And now we know where not to stop. We should have taken the hint when the server told us that the best seller was the brisket tacos... at a bbq place. Now the tacos weren't bad at all, they did need more fat since it was on the dry side but they weren't terrible. The corn nuggets were ok. The jalapeno sausage Mac and cheese was missing all of the above. Didn't taste like absolute nothing and the noodles were way overcooked. The ribs and the chicken same no bbq sauce could save them. Drove 45 miles one way to enjoy a BBQ Pork Dinner. How the heck does a BBQ place run out of pork at 1:30 in the afternoon? Wife had the cod fish and said it was good. The sides , mac and cheese, cowboy beans, coleslaw, and collard greens were all excellent. I settled for the smoked turkey platter which was also good. But darn it I wanted BBQ pork. We had a wonderful meal at 18:00 after a long day of SCUBA diving at Blue Grotto. The place had not seen a dinner rush yet so there was lots of open seating to choose from. Our waitress Abagail is a doll, kind, sweet and attentive. Our top picks from the meal were: corn nuggets( almost funnel cake crust with powdered sugar, could be on dessert I only), the grilled chicken which accompanied the fiesta salad (skip the dressings and use the tangy sweet bbq sauce). The burnt ends sandwich was nice. The biscuits are not to be missed. All sauces were served warmed and were excellent. I only wish we had saved room for dessert. We started with fried green beans that were nice and crispy. Our dinners were brought out right after we finished our appetizer. Beef brisket tacos with jalapeño mac & cheese, bacon cheeseburger with corn nuggets, and a full slab of baby back ribs with the jalapeño mac & cheese and fries. This place looks like a barbecue place should.... The restaurant was spotlessly clean, and the staff incredibly friendly.... Unfortunately, their meat just isn't very good.... Particularly the brisket.... The burnt ends are advertised as twice cooked, and that's an understatement.... Like the overcooked brisket slices, they cannot be eaten without sauce.... All the meats were also very bland.... which is not unusual for Florida barbecue..... the sausage links were OK, but nothing special.... For the sides, we chose, collards, green beans, and mashed sweet potatoes.... these were all done quite well, and actually were seasoned, although all of them did need salt.... They do not use or serve real butter, just some garbage variety vegetable oil margarine in those irrigating little packets.... We were hoping the 3 1/2 star rating was inaccurate, but it's actually not even that good.... after years and years of driving by this place and commenting we should stop and check it out, we finally did..... I got the impression that the owners neither care about the quality of their product, nor will they be willing to change, as they seem to pick up enough traffic, because of their location to the interstate and locals who don't know what good food should taste like.... Wow just wow. You can look at my past reviews and see I don't like to write bad reviews but this place makes me sick. This is a good example of great location, I don't know how they are in business still. The ribs tasted like they were boiled 3 days ago then cooked in an oven there was no smoke flavor. There famous sauce made me almost puke it was all apple cider vinegar. The brisket was really soft like it was sitting in some sort of a crock but was PRE SLICED as it was very oxidized which is not how you serve brisket, it is a slice to order item. The corn nuggets where straight out the freezer, with the freezer burn they where un-edible. And the mac and cheese don't get me started just look at the other pictures on Yelp. I really wanted bbq and there weren't any other options in the area but I shoulda listened to Yelp Atleast I wouldn't have got a stomach from McDonald's. Literally nothing on our plates tasted good. I got burnt ends. They presented the fattiest, nastiest pieces of meat. The baked beans tasted like they went bad. In overall terms of local authenticity, dining experience, accessibility, and quality of food, the Big Rascals name is up there with Fat Boys, Brick City, and Big Lee's. The outside is inviting with shaded picnic tables, neon signage, and a roof-top bovine bust. Indoors, it offers rustic, wooden booth seats, and old-school country atmosphere. We dined here 1hr before closing-time on a Saturday, and ordered the Texas BBQ'Dilla and full rack of baby-back ribs--indicative of their variety of creative and classic menu items. Their meats were fall-off-the-bone and flavorful. I did not know moist, seemingly pulled brisket--with pepperoncini and home-made peppercorn "white BBQ" sauce--could taste this good, so differently. We will come back for their burnt-ends, chicken, and pulled pork soon...as well as for their various tiers of side items and sweets. Also, look out for their food truck "roadsters". I have not tried them yet, but I'm confident that the food trucks can deliver the same qualities that made this mothership so esteemed.
