Burnt ends on Texas Toast with fried Okra

We were looking to try a different bbq restaurant while in Ocala. After reading the reviews we decided to give them a try. We weren't disappointed. The restaurant looked rustic. We were greeted upon walking in by Jessica who was very polite and friendly! She asked us where we would like to sit. We decided to eat on their outdoor patio. Their beer selection was decent. Our food came out in a timely manner and was pretty good bbq. Only drawback was that the patio tables weren't very clean. A little wipe down of the tables would go far. Definitely worth a try!

    Ribs and killlllerkollards!

I'm really fussy about my bbq. I have had great Texas, Louisiana and Carolina BBQ. Now I can say... I finally had great Florida BBQ! When you order ribs that have a beautiful, flavorful crust on the outside and are tender but not falling apart (boiled), and do not need BBQ sauce well... that is what good ribs are all about!!! I absolutely adore collards when they are done right! The collards here are so good they'll make your tongue slap your brains out! Dang!!! Yummy jalapeño cornbread and delish iced tea. Man I wish we lived closer but now we have a BBQ go to when we travel up there. Jessica was amazingly sweet and very knowledgeable!

Two tiny fatty pieces of awful and very expensive brisket. This stretched out over a foot long. 2 skinny pieces of fat!

We ordered take out yesterday and I knew the minute my husband brought it in that something had changed. Owners! The brisket was not good at all, very fatty and mushy. I got 2 tiny fatty pieces. My fried okra was cooked in old oil along with the fries. My husband's pulled pork was dry as a bone and crisp on the ends. His fries were bad, the oil is old or something. Which happens. I also ordered the $11 "banana pudding" skip it. It was literally vanilla pudding with some canned cool whip on top. With 4 vanilla wafers and 5 thin slices of banana. That's not what we call banana pudding in the south. It was quite sad and I would change the name to vanilla pudding. I called to make sure they knew how bad it was. The entire $50+ worth of food went into the trash. So the owner called me back. She's very defensive of her "homemake cooking". She offered me a 25% discount on my next trip. I declined because I won't be back. I'll go right back to Sonny's, because Fat Boys isn't the same as it was under the previous owners. It's bad bad and with her attitude, I won't give my money to them anymore. This place USED to be the bbq place that you could get great food at a good price. Not anymore, I suggest they get it together before the season. They won't be in business long and maybe the new owner will care that their food is crap. It's sad for the area because there are very few good restaurants in that area. I don't think people will be pleased with the quality and quantity of food they get. If we had been in restaurant I would've definitely sent it back. So instead I'll spend my hard earned money elsewhere. I suggest you do the same. It was completely inedible and she doesn't care. So back to Sonnys it is. And I hate that for the area. The owners don't care and won't listen to constructive criticism. Her loss not mine. Skip this place seriously.

    The platter of food

Pulled over for lunch on our road trip. We ordered the six shooter platter with burnt ends, ribs, beef brisket and pulled pork. A mountain of food was soon delivered to our table. I will note that the table was clean and not sticky. They do clean the place :-) So let's dig in! The burnt ends were sticky and carmaelized yumminess. The ribs were pretty good. The beef brisket was a bit dry (we asked for the fatty side and still it was dry). The pulled pork was nicely smoked. The sides. The okra was hot and the accompanying sauce was bland. The green beans were plentiful but bland. The jalapeño corn bread wanted to be delicious but was bland and smelled like pepper without any kick. The baked beans were pure sugar. There was also a handful of Texas toast (buttered and tasty slightly of garlic salt?) and some crinklecut fries. The BBQ sauces were need I say it? Bland. The sweet was glorified catsup. The spicy wasn't deserving the the name. The Carolina was barely more than BBQ flavored mustard. And the only one worth trying was the Blueberry. It was actually a success.

Best damn BBQ in Ocala, we pass five BBQ places to come here. Great casual atmosphere excellent and friendly staff. (Jessica and Austin) The burnt ends and sliced brisket is the absolute best, great ribs, pulled pork, wings. All sides have been great, we will definitely be coming back again and again! Forget the chain BBQ, skip it and go straight here!!!! You won't be disappointed, my next visit we are going for the big ass beef rib dinner!!!!

Quarter chicken, french fries, sweet, potato, cornbread, and fried okra
    Nichole L.

Great food and very friendly service! I went in with two friends for a quick lunch after swimming in the springs. I intentionally ordered white meat chicken to see if it was dry, it was perfect. I also really enjoyed the blueberry barbecue sauce. It wasn't overly fruity and a little tangy. It wasn't what I was expecting, but I was pleasantly surprised. I was not a fan of this sweet potato cornbread, it was a little soggy for my taste. Everything else was spot on!

1/4 Brisket & Blueberry Barbecue sauce

I recently ordered hoping for a great BBQ experience, but unfortunately, it was a huge letdown. The brisket was dry and lacked the rich, smoky flavor I expected. It felt like it had been overcooked and old. It was reminiscent of cardboard. The beef rib was equally disappointing - it had way too much fat, making it greasy and hard to enjoy. To top it off, the overall seasoning was off; it felt like the meat wasn't properly marinated or seasoned, resulting in a bland and unappetizing taste. This barbecue NEEDS sauce. Upon opening it I was hit with the smell of old bbq. It was surprisingly moist so if you go on the fabled "better days" you might be able to get a fresh rib and season it yourself at home. The flavors just didn't come together, and I left feeling like I had wasted both my time and money. I won't be returning anytime soon. The Mac and cheese was decent and the green beans straight out the can with generous amounts of brisket & potatoes throughout which was ok. It would've been great if the brisket was at least good.

Beef rib, fries, corn bread and mac and cheese

Damn we have been wasting gas and money by going to the other place. Today was our first time trying Fat Boys after 10 years of living in Ocala! We are so sorry that we haven't tried you guys sooner! I ordered the beef ribs and they were amazing! Sides weren't really up to par (burnt fries mixed with okay fries and dry mac n cheese) but the beef rib totally made up for it. No stars will be docked because I'm certain the sides will probably be better next time we come! Bye for now

This place was really good! I was in town for work and stopped in for dinner one night. Everyone there was very kind and friendly, also they were having like a trivia night so that was fun to watch. The food was amazing and the sauces were really good. I highly recommend...

Lean brisket, Mac & cheese, fried okra, and corn bread oh my!
    Melissa W.

I had read so much about the resurgence of this restaurant I had to give it a try. The environment is pretty cool and the greeting was super awesome. if you're looking for Full Service, this is not it but I do like the concept. It's less staff dependent. If somebody doesn't show up it doesn't impact your service. I love it when you walk into it environment and people don't assume you know what you're doing and that's exactly what happened. we walked in and were greeted with a full info session of how to order pay and receive our food many kudos for that! We both ordered the lean brisket with two sides. Lean is no joke here so if you're looking for any fat at all don't order lean. The fried okra was tasty especially with the spicy ranch sauce for dip. The best was the cornbread. It is sweet so if that's not your thing you may want to go with the Texas Toast. My mom and I both had the Mac & cheese and both felt it was missing a little taste. Strongly encourage you to try it. The portions are huge and the staff is extremely helpful.

The young lady behind the counter was friendly, patient, and handled all of our questions like a true professional. The food was excellent across the board. My daughter ordered the burger, my wife had the salmon and turkey, my son had the ribs, and I went with the Yardbird. Everything was cooked perfectly, and no one had a single complaint. We tried a variety of sides, and the mac and cheese was the clear family favorite. While we were eating, we had a nice conversation with one of the ladies working in the dining room. She surprised us by bringing over two blueberry cobblers on the house, which was incredibly thoughtful. It was honestly the best blueberry cobbler I've ever had. Great food, outstanding service, and a welcoming atmosphere. We will definitely be coming back. On a second visit My son and I stopped in for dinner after our CAP meeting. We placed our order and went to get our drinks. Shortly afterward, our order was ready. We both chose the smoked cheddar burger. I would have liked it to be a little hotter, but it was still very good. Of course, we paired it with fries and mac and cheese. While we were getting our food, I noticed a gentleman who had arrived before us was still waiting. He spoke with the manager and explained that he had already been waiting about 20 minutes and had not been called. The manager immediately apologized and had his order prepared on the spot. He then went a step further and issued the gentleman a full refund. It turns out the gentleman was a U.S. Navy veteran. Respect to Mission BBQ for doing the right thing and putting their customers first. That level of service still matters.

The food was wonderful - pulled port, mac & cheese, coleslaw, french fries...all delicious! The best part was that because it's Veterans Day, the restaurant is giving free sandwiches to Vets & First Responders. Then we learned that on other days, they get free dessert. How fabulous!! 5 Stars and bonus points since the entire staff was super! A staff member came over to ensure we were enjoying our food & our cashier came out to give us more info on the program they offer for our heroes. Check out the many restaurants in varios states. They have 9/11 memorabilia and photos of vets/first responders. More restaurants & shops should do this!! We will definitely be back here!!

The four of us ordered various meals and extra sides so we could try everything. The employees were very friendly, and when we mentioned that it was our first visit the employee taking our order made great suggestions. Service was excellent and we didn't have to wait long for our food. We all enjoyed the food. Everything we ordered was excellent. There were two BBQ sauces on the table but neither was spicy. A friendly employee offered to bring spicy BBQ sauce, she brought it in a small cup and it was just spicy enough. The only issue we had was that the music was much too loud. I like music, and don't mind loud-ish music in restaurants. But this music was so loud that we couldn't even have conversation. I'm certified in hearing testing and happened to have my sound level meter with me. I checked the sound of the music and it was 94.9 decibels, which exceeds OSHA's safe limit of 85 decibels. 94.9 is a level where permanent hearing damage can occur. Besides the super loud music the rest of the visit was good. Other reviews have mentioned the blaring music as well.

He can't be besting others with less than top notch BBQ, can he? I ordered the Burnt Ends plate ($16), excited to see it on the menu since burnt ends are not always available to order in most Texas BBQ joints since they run out of it very early. My wife tried their Pulled Pork sandwich ($14) and our friends ordered the Brisket/Burnt Ends combo ($18) and a Smash Burger ($12). My wife thought the pulled pork, while tender, lacked the smoky flavor we've come to expect. She had to douse it with their mustard-based BBQ sauce, which was actually pretty good. The burnt ends were nice and tender but I would echo my wife's feedback about the meat lacking that distinctive smokiness. Additionally, I'm used to burnt ends having all that concentrated flavor and char...this one didn't have that. The prices are decent...a good value for BBQ nowadays. However, their offerings fell short of our perhaps lofty expectations. We'll have to check out other local BBQ joints to match BBQ from Salt Lick, Black's, Kreutz Market, Smitty's, and even Luling City Market...not to mention those legendary BBQ joints in Austin.

This restaurant has been here forever, but gets really great inspections from the health department despite being an older building. We ordered to-go and ate in the parking lot. What a feast! We ordered their current special: a full slab on payback ribs and 2 sides for a mere $14.99. That was to take home, but we sampled it in the car and no silverware was needed. These ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender and juicy and thick. It was hard to remember that these were for later, we wanted them all now! Our sides were fries and baked beans. The beans were good, but the fries were nothing special. My husband got a pulled pork sandwich with green beans and hasn't stopped raving about the green beans the entire time he was eating. He said the sandwich was delicious, too! I like meat cooked well-done, so I ordered a burnt ends sandwich and coleslaw. What a happy surprise that the meat was thinly sliced instead of the usual chunks served at other places! Every single piece of meat was well-cooked, tasty, and not at all fatty or greasy. I'm a fan! The coleslaw was delicious, too! Our to-go ordered was served with a smile, plenty of napkins and silverware and ketchup and salt and pepper and barbecue sauce. We started with Carolina Tater Skins. Absolutely DELICIOUS! Potato skins with Roast Pork, cheese, bacon, green onions, topped with bbq sauce...cup of sour cream in the middle. Didn't last over 3 minutes for the two of us and there were 6 of them! They were THAT delicious. I ordered the Birria Tacos (3) with a side salad and my husband got the Cuban Clucker sandwich with a side of crinkle fries. We spoke to our waitress about how we had wanted to try their food for awhile now but just so happened to find ourselves about 1.3 miles from this location tonight and made the decision to try them tonight! She said they were best known for their wings and just how to get them. So we also ordered 10 wings done just that way. Our meals were brought not too long after we demolished our fabulous appetizer. Wow! Absolutely crazy good! I pounded the three Birria Tacos in record time, in between also demolishing my side salad. My husband said his fries were perfect and he's STILL working on that huge sandwich as I write this! Lol The chicken wings, while they looked delicious, once I tried one, there was a strange fishy taste that came across so strong on the wings that didn't have the sweet and spicy sauce on them, that I couldn't eat them. It actually made me gag. I just couldn't eat them. The waitress asked us how we liked them, so I explained what was wrong with them. She offered to have them remade but we declined. She told the manager to come speak to us about them. He was nice enough, but looked intimidated by us (a 61 and 62 yr old?) and kinda looked anywhere but at me when I was explaining what the problem was with the wings. He was said he'd investigate. Our waitress came back and asked if he spoke with us. I said he did. She asked what he said and I said he told us he'd investigate the problem. She asked us if he said he's take the wings off our bill and I said no. She said she'd take them off anyways because it was a whole 10 wings we didn't eat. I said, thanks but I'm not trying to get free food especially if she gets in trouble for doing that. She said but you didn't even eat them! I said she couldn't have paid ME to eat them! The taste was so gross I actually used a napkin to wipe the taste off my tongue! She laughed. We went ahead and ordered dessert to make up for the wings we sent back and then didn't want after all. The bourbon peach bread pudding turned out to be sold out, so we settled on beignet bites for him and Pecan Pie for myself. Both were EXCELLENT! WE will definitely be back to see our fantastic waitress Anna and to try more of their menu because they have some of the most delicious sounding entrees! All in all, we were impressed by the fantastic food (minus the fishy wings), but everything was fresh, delicious and very decently priced! Great place to bring the family because there's something for everyone here. Chicken tenders to burgers and all kinds of sandwiches, soups, salads, pasta...diversity without being outrageous. Great combos! Can't wait to try something else next visit! You know it was a great meal when your husband turns to you as you're walking to the car together and he says "thank you babe. That was really good!". 'Nuff said?
