So many low star reviews of this store. My buddy who lives in Atlanta took us to a Zaxby's way back in late 90's. We loved it then so when we are in a road trip and it's time to eat we find one along the route. We don't have a zaxby's near us in Ohio so kind of a treat for us. No clue who this Mr. Beast is and yes, I'm apparently living under a rock but whatever. We arrived, went to counter and the folks working the counter were super nice, attentive and answered all of my questions without any hesitation. The food took a few minutes but that's about how long it takes us to decide what to even choose on the magic soda machine. Our order was announced, I go grab it and looks and smells tasty. I have always been a fan of Zaxby's. For fast food, they are pretty good and while the menu is somewhat limited, if you like chicken, you can find something that you will like. Service here was rather friendly and I opted to get the cajun chicken club sandwich combo meal, which came with french fries and a thirty-two ounce drink. While it was pretty good, I did think it was a bit expensive at about ten dollars for this fast food meal. I do not know if this is because a food shortages as of late, specifically the chicken shortage or they have just gone up. Either way, it is a bit expensive. This particular Zaxby's location is very convenient to Interstate 75. It made for a quick and easy jump off the highway to grab a quick meal and get back on the road to our final destination. AVOID THIS RESTAURANT!! This is the dirtiest Zaxby's I've ever seen. I placed my order online and went in to use the facilities before picking up my order. The women's bathroom was a wreck - dirty floor/sink/walls, TP pieces all over the floor, broken (and empty) paper towel machine hanging sideways on the wall, NO SOAP! Just a big bottle of hand sanitizer which I used as a cleanser and rinsed my hands. The dining room area, especially the floor, is filthy! The employees were all hanging out talking/arguing out of sight of the register and they didn't even know 3 customers were waiting to order. I don't get it... I want to start this review by saying this was our first time trying this chain anywhere, so you can take that into consideration. We have no idea if this is a bad chain or a bad location. However, the food was out fast, served hot and the employees were efficient and nice, so I am under the impression that it's just the food itself that is dragging everything down. How does that happen? The taste and texture were really unappetizing, we did not finish it and we were only splitting a 6 piece meal. We basically ate enough to get back on the road for a couple of hours. I'm not much of a sauce person, I don't think good food needs it, but tried their sauce to see if it would help the chicken. That Zaxby's sauce that comes with the meal is awful and also unappetizing. What's in that? Is that a vinegar mustard base? About this time I started looking around at all the people, trying to figure out what I was missing and saw a bunch of different sauces listed on the menu for an upcharge. These sauces weren't offered to us when we entered, so we didn't know about them. We didn't have a lot of time to look at the menu before we were asked for our order, but I'm still surprised they didn't mention it. I'm not a fan of using sauce as a marketing ploy to make your food more edible and get more money out of your customers, anyway. Especially not when you make your signature sauce, that's free, unappealing to push customers to spend that extra money. Not impressed. So this is me conceding that the sauce you get may make or break your meal here. I find it totally plausible that there is a way to dress up this chicken with a tasty sauce to make it an edible... possibly good meal. But your base meal should be up to a certain standard, and this isn't it. Even KFC is better and c'mon... KFC, man. There were several positives to our meal though. The fries were good and the coleslaw was okay, both served at the right temperature. Unfortunately, they messed up the toast, it was a brick. On the long drive home from St. Petersburg today we stopped for lunch and it was a disaster from the beginning. To start- the cashier taking orders is apparently hearing-impaired. While I believe ALL people, disability or not, have the right to work this up-front position is not where you place someone that cannot hear the guests, particularly when there's a line formed to the door. So after finally placing our order the cashier just looks over at the people behind us and starts taking their order. There was no "thanks" or "move along" or anything, she just starts talking over our heads. Moving on to the oh-so-hated Coke Freestyle machines that all the Zaxby's have now. The screen was nasty gross, ugh I can't believe I touched it. That's how thirsty I was, drinking nasty Freestyle coke using a nasty Freestyle touchscreen. The ice didn't work on the Freestyle so I had to go to yet another location and fill my cup up with ice. Of course then I have to stand in line AGAIN at the Freestyle machine to actually get my drink. Let me also mention that this God-awful Freestyle machine is placed directly beside the front counter so you are constantly jostled by the people in line trying to place orders. Food comes and the super-surly woman handing out the bags totally ignores me when I ask her for sauce. I had to get in her face and ask loudly. She never acknowledged me. She just disappears and comes back with an overflowing little cup of sauce that she bangs down on the unclean counter. Fried chicken is a favorite of mine - I have tried most if not all of the National chain franchises. At this point I would give the nod to Popeye's as my first choice. Zaxby's is a chain I have only seen in the south, and have been curious about. Stopped by for a quick lunch. The venue is in an old "Whataburger" building, and it is clean enough and comfortable. The service was prompt and pleasant. I had a Snax combo, which consisted of three fairly good-sized chicken fingers with Zaxby's sauce, a piece of "Texas Toast", a generous portion of crinkle-cut fries and a 22 oz soda for about $6.00. The chicken was tender and juicy, and the breading was not greasy, but it could have a bit more flavor and been crisper. The sauce was a spiced up ranch dressing type and had a pleasant flavor. Texas toast was a bit soggy; the fries were crisp and hot. All-in-all, Zaxby's was fine, and I wouldn't hesitate to go here if I was hungry and near a franchise, but I would not go out of my way to find one.
