It has taken me some time to return to this and write my review because I have been so distressed by my experience. In general I use Yelp as an opportunity to express gratitude and to cheer on people's strengths. But I write this review with the intention of protecting anyone in the future from having to go through an experience similar to mine. Without putting my medical history out for public review by everyone in Yelp, I will just say that my concerns were dismissed in the most callous and cruel manor. As I sat in shame, embarrassment, anxiety, and tears she became defensive and critical which then caused me to cry even harder, at which she suggested I "get on meds for that." To say she has a lack in bedside manor as a clinician is a gross understatement. I feel she may lack any empathy or compassion at all. I cannot imagine facing a pregnancy or any health issue with a physician who lacks basic kindness and manors. I wouldn't buy a latte from someone like that, much less go to for such critical and intimate medical care. The Aiea location also appears to be messy, disorganized, and cluttered which is unsettling in and of itself. It was my first visit to see her, and it will be my last. read more

Ladies, I URGE YOU to seek care elsewhere. The last time I was at her Aiea office. The Medical assistant did my vitals. Put me in a room and I undressed as expected. Within five minutes the medical assistant popped her head in and said Dr. Chen told me to make a new appointment because I was "late" to my appointment. I expected this from dr. Chen as this wasn't my first issue or rude experience from her (silly me to go back). So I got my purse and handed the MA my appointment card that had had shown I was there before my appointment and TA-DAH was actually on time! She came in a few minutes later. Didn't even apologize for the mishap. Did her job and walked out. I said "forget this so-called doctor" after this treatment I'm looking elsewhere! She has terrible bedside manner. Is a terrible or miserable person in general. Has an employee turnaround like no other! When I had seen my new and better GYN she took the time to listen to me, go over my GYN and OB history. No judgement and treated me like a doctor with class and good bedside manner should! In all my years of seeing a GYNs I have never been so appalled by Dr. Chens horrible and classless behavior!! I happen to love seeing Dr. Chen as my obgyn. I have been a patient of hers for over 5 years. This comes from seeing 2 gynecologists previously, both of whom had ridiculous wait times, rushed and unthorough appointments, and showed no genuine care. I was absolutely relieved to find Dr. Chen, and though it seems a few others have had different experiences with her, I myself have had no problems with her whatsoever. She has 2 offices conveniently located at Kapiolani and at the building next to Big City Diner by Pearlridge. This is an absolute plus to me being from the westside of the island, to not have to spend my time in traffic to drive far for an appointment. Her office hours are very reasonable and accommodating, and I am usually always able to get an appt time I want. She never overcrowds her office, making for uncomfortable times in the waiting room..and she will always see you within at least 10 min from your appt time, if not right on the dot or sooner. She has always taken the time to show great bedside manner and genuine care for my needs and wants. She is very thorough with her examinations, and will sometimes see you in her office after an exam to input more information into your file via her computer. This shows me that she is interested in me as a patient and that my information is not just going right over her head. She may come off "strict", but I believe it's because as a Dr., she only has your best interests at heart. She will tell you like it is, and not sugarcoat things, which I personally prefer. Her staff is also amazing as well. They are always so welcoming and friendly. Such great smiles, professional attitudes, kind speaking voices, and they also are very personable. I will stand by her as a patient and will be absolutely devastated if I wasnt able to see her as my obgyn. read more

Soooo.... The field that this Dr is In should somewhat dictate the demeanor and compassion that is a must when your dealing with females - hormones- and sensitive issues (you would like to think). However, I have a family member that is a patient and having to endure a somewhat tumultuous first pregnancy. She is trying her best to adhere to the "Dr's orders". But this Dr demands, commands, and pretty much points her finger with a far from compassionate bedside manner. Why on earth would an educated female subject another female to this treatment? ****I want to caution others considering taking Dr CHEN as a Physician.. I am witnessing the effects of the verbal abuse, inappropriate conduct, and straight up "scolding" which is non conducive to her condition let alone unacceptable!! Dr CHEN is stressing out this first time mom and making her experience - a miserable one. You cannot relive a first pregnancy.... The environment must be positive for her as much as possible which DR CHEN has failed to do. GTFOH!!! PS: the 1 star is only so I could post this in the first place BUT ITS NOT DESERVED!! read more

Very up to date office, signing in all paperwork through ipad, I also received reminder texts for 3 seperate days BEFORE appointment ! Great staff, happy and so nice, Awesome doctor too! They really make you feel comfortable and welcomed! Although I do miss my old Doctor that I have been with since I was 18, coming here I feel right at home! read more

Meh. I've experienced better is the correct way to explain Dr. Chen. Positives: Her office has a good front end staff and is high tech with the ipad check-in and payment system. In other news: She is an Iolani graduate, and well educated as a MD. I must say she is completely book smart but lacks tact and any trust or compassion for her patients. Being an brilliant doctor but lacking bedside manner and social skills to connect with patients is difficult in such a customer orientated-driven business. For example, because her own office records were not updated for whatever reason, she did not trust my word that I went to my Fetal Diagnostics appointment, she questioned both my partner and I, and kept implying that we were lying to her. This is my first time being pregnant, and we are honest people... I would have told her the truth if I didn't go. After the 3rd degree, she then left the office and called the Fetal Diagnostics office to check if I went. When we later called to her office for the end consultation, she knew she was wrong because we could overhear her conversation over the phone from where we were waiting, she did not apologize to us and just glossed over the situation. Watch your insurance statements because her office doesn't give a break down of your co-pay: She was charging my HMSA insurance and collecting from me $40 co-pay per visit because she insisted on "unnecessary" scans for my pregnancy. She, nor the office staff could explain this, I had to find it out myself via my insurance company... if she was to just do the regular: monitor heartbeat, measure, check sugar levels, down there check-ups, etc. the co-pay would be $15 or covered. I only say "unnecessary" because I am not a high-risk pregnancy, I did not need to be scanned every time I went in. That was why she was sending me to the Fetal Diagnostic center in the first place was to get scanned by the professionals there. Lastly, I also asked her if she could send me her written records regarding my pregnancy progress and on two occasions she said that she would do so, but never did. During the middle of my pregnancy (though it was stressful to find another OBGYN), I have since left her care and am glad that I did. read more

Dr. Chen's demeanor has not change even with the terrible review after terrible review. This is my first pregnancy and first time in hawaii and figured I would give her a chance because of how close to my home it is. #not worth it. Getting called a liar about my medical history is so insulting seeing as I have had these issues for years now and confirmed by every doctor I have seen. Then to be further insulted of why I stopped taking medication after already telling her I stopped them after being told I was pregnant is just showing how much she does not care for her patient. Dr. Chen is very pushy about getting her way when it comes to what the patient wants/needs. Her own staff told me about her faulty blood pressure machine and scolded me for not take at home test. For the record my blood pressure has been normal before and after leaving this clinic. Ladies please I urge you to see some one else read more

Yes, her office is computerized and the receptionist is nice; but her cold and callous demure is very difficult to warm up to. She may have earned her medical degree; but I have never seen an OB-GYN heavily question my medical background that is outside of women's health. I have a regular Primary physician and specialty physicians for those specific areas (i.e. dental, eye, etc.) Yet she inquires with the intensity of the Gestapo about areas outside of her expertise. On all my visits with her, she spends much time asking if I experienced any spousal abuse (physical or mental), or on other conditions that she doesn't specialize. I am a new patient who only wants regular check-ups/paps, with no other medical conditions or concerns; in general = very healthy/happy person. I'm beginning to wonder if Dr. Chen has a friend who needs "abused patients" to treat in order to make more money; so he has asked Dr. Chen to refer them to his Abuse Clinic. I don't like my personal information documented everywhere online; where any medical employee can simply look up a name (perhaps a new date or ex-boyfriend's name, etc.) and learn about every doctor this person has ever visited and their medical history via the vast computer technology. For those who don't know what HIPAA is or why it is enforced: it is to protect the patient by giving them rights to privacy. Privacy is the law. It should be respected. This computerized approach opens new doors for hackers and medical employees who may have access to your medical records without authority or medical reasons for obtaining your PRIVATE information. I spoke to 2 other friends who also happen to have seen Dr. Chen. They also said they had some similar experience and one of them has already switched to another OB-GYN. It's been awhile since I saw doctor Chen. I've had multiple HORRIBLE experiences from visiting her. First off, she judged me by my medical background and immediately started speaking down to me in a disrespectful and demeaning manner as soon as she looked at my unhealthy history. Secondly, the last visit I saw her she got angry at my situation since her nurse told me wrong information and she scolded the nurse in front of me (to me that is inappropriate, unprofessional, and completely unnecessary). And at that same visit since she was so "busy" and upset about the wrong info given to me she was trying to rush through my visit (like always) and she shoved the tool into me so hard and it was SO painful and she did not care at all. Then she went on saying I was wasting her time being there and she could not answer any of my additional questions I had regarding the visit since she was swamped with other appointments/patients that she told me to set up another appointment JUST TO ASK MY QUESTIONS. She is rude, judgmental, rough, unprofessional, demeaning, grouchy, and it has been just the most horrible doctor experiences I have EVER had. Please do not go to her and spread the word of how uncomfortable and angry she makes people feel obviously time and time again. read more

I went to Dr.Chen for my pregnancy. Walking into her office, her staff is courteous and professional though friendly and warm. Getting into the system is painless and electronic (no more paper forms!). The wait time is basically non-existent as the schedule is on point (no more hour wait times!). The waiting area is clean, well organized and so are the patient rooms and bathroom. As for Dr.Chen, she is very welcoming, non threatening and proficient. My overall impression is that Dr. Chen is really the best doctor I have ever had , not only is she highly intelligent and skilled at her job she is attentive and does her research on how best to help you. The medical waver is to for her to access your health history without having to bother you for every single form, its to benefit you and she is extremely private about your medical history. If you have questions, she can answer you right away, plus she tells you things others OB's kind of generalize, don't go in to depth about (things you could be worried about, the ailment in general)and things you didn't even think of. I'm very sad I moved and had to lose her. If you need an OB shes not only the most qualified but personable and easy to talk to. Also the reminder texts are so helpful and enable you keep track of your appointments. Highly recommend her for the most quality and efficient care! read more

Dr. Chen was great! I usually just go to my regular doctor for pap smears and all that, but I have been having an issue that my doctor could not figure out. The office is updated. They use iPads for check in and to do your initial paper work. I love that! Usually by the time I'm done filling out the paperwork, my hand is sore. iPads are a wonderful alternative to the traditional pen and paper. The nurse brought me in and did my weight and blood pressure. She then took me to a room to wait for the doctor. I was only in the room, before the doctor came in and actually asked me to go to her office to talk, as I didn't need a pap smear or other physical exam at this time. I explained to her my symptoms and the sequence and time frame in which they started to show themselves. Just from listening to my symptoms, she had two ideas for what it could be. The first requires a blood test. The second simply requires that I find a different form of birth control. I was impressed that the lab actually comes up to her office, rather than sending me with a form to a secondary location. Her office does not validate parking. However, the lab tech did. Parking is pretty affordable though. With the validation it only cost about $2. Oh and by the way, the new parking structure at Kapiolani, is phenomenal! The old one used to get full and you would get stuck in traffic and be unable to go forward, backward, or turn around. The new one has plenty of parking space! They even have chargers for electric cars ($2/hour for charging stations). Overall, I am very pleased with the attention and care I was given at Dr. Chen's office. Honestly, did not dislike Dr. Chen. She was great. But its her practice is what bothers me. Im going through a painful and pretty much terrifying issue and her office scheduled me an appointment, great! Took off work whatever. THEN they called me this morning saying that they had cancelled my appointment due to a balance that was there because of a previous appointment i had missed. I would have paid before i went in i didnt care. Even over the phone when i made the appointment. BUT I WAS NOT NOTIFIED. I was told by the receptionist that another appointment was put in my place a while ago (which is weird because i made my appt on friday and its Monday) and i was not told till this morning. Now i am not able to go till friday. I work till tuesday. Thanks a lot for making me run around looking for someone else!!! I am a very scared patient. Working in the medical field as i do, would NEVER DARE do that to anyone. Its the ultimate disrespect and i feel so terrible to have ever wasted my buisness on this place. read more
