Tried Hunan for the first time last night. Atmosphere, food and service were excellent. We had the General Tso's Chicken, the Basil Chicken and egg rolls. All were very fresh and delicious. Not a fancy place--you walk in, grab a menu, and seat yourself. Large selection of appetizers and entrees from mild to spicy from China's various provinces and Taiwan. Generally, pretty good. The egg roll appetizer was mostly crispy but not entirely-- the wrapper was a bit doughy. The Happy Family entree had a variety of stir fried veggies with shrimp, beef and chicken. The veggies and chicken were excellent: the beef and shrimp came over cooked. Entrees have your choice of rice. I chose stir fried, which seemed to be steamed and with no flavor until I added soy sauce. The service, however, was impeccable. We were in Mattoon, Ill for a family reunion and my sister-in-law suggested Chinese food, so I check Yelp and found Hunan Restaurant with 4-star rating. Since it only had 11 reviews, I wasn't too sure about the rating, but since we were in a small town, I thought we would give it a try. I'm sure glad we did. When you walk in, you are no longer in Mattoon, you are in Chinatown. It is decorated like a Chinese restaurant that you might find in San Francisco's Chinatown District. We were greeted by a friendly hostess that showed us to our table. They have a fairly extensive menu, so it took us a few minutes to decide on our selection. Our waitress was very knowledgeable, which was very helpful. I had the Mongolian Beef (Peking) which consisted of thin slices of beef sautéed with onions, scallion, carrots and water chestnuts. The dish was very favorable. My wife had the Orange Chicken, consisting of lightly battered chicken sautéed with orange citron in a dark brown sauce. This is one of her favorite dishes and she said that this was some of the best that she has ever had. To add a little elegance, they present their dishes, Lois's chicken had a flower created out of a slice of an Orange and piece Cucumber. Mine was decorated with swirls of sauce. This is a feature that I have not seen in too many, if any Chinese restaurants. The portions were large, so when you come, come hungry, although Lois said that the left-over Orange Chicken she had 2 days later was almost as good as the original in flavor. So, if you find yourself in Mattoon, Ill, this is a great restaurant for lunch or dinner. read more

Visited for the first time yesterday. We shared the spicy beef and scallops, Panang curry chicken and basil chicken - all were delicious! (my favorite was the basil chicken) Before our entrees arrived, we enjoyed egg rolls and spring rolls - very tasty, especially with the sweet and sour sauce! Also got an order of crab rangoon; the puffs were filled with a generous amount of filling and were also very yummy. Our service was excellent. What a gem of a find in central Illinois! read more

While at the restaurant, the food was expensive for Chinese food, and with small portions, it wasn't even good food, you can get the same quality for food at any other Chinese restaurant for cheeper. The atmosphere was good but the whole restaurant was empty. read more

It's really nice to see an eat in, Chinese restaurant as they seem to be a rare commodity these days. (at least this is the case in the Chicago, suburbs!) The inside of this restaurant is extremely clean and the decor is what one would expect from a Chinese restaurant and I think it was fantastic ! The waitress (owner perhaps) was very tentative, helpful and quick paced. I came here on a Sunday afternoon and there were only four tables to wait on, so service was very good. The menu is extensive and has all the traditional items one typically sees from an American, Chinese restaurant. For my first visit here I ordered the crab-ragoons, hot & sour soup and the crispy pork with steamed rice. The soup and ragoons come out together and presented well. The ragoons had a good amount of stuffing in them, the wanton was crispy and they tasted really good. Especially when dipped in the sweet sauce which accompanied them. The soup, was good, although I was a bit disappointed that it was not spicy. As for the crispy pork, it presented well, was in fact crispy, the meat was tender, juicy and tasted good. This dish is suppose to be spicy, but I didn't detect any. The steamed rice... well it's plain, steamed rice cooked just right. In the end, I was very pleased with the Hunan Restaurant and will certainly come back here again. Although next time I'll see about getting the spiciness factor dialed up some. I lived in St. Louis all my life until recently when I came to Mattoon, IL to help my elderly mother. I am moving to New York soon so my experience in the city will be coming to a close. There are not many things in Mattoon worth being called "Great" but Hunan is definitely one of them. It is sad to see some of the negative reviews on yelp for this restaurant, and I can only attribute them to uncultured people who were expecting something equivalent to Panda Express or your common takeout Chinese restaurant. Hunan offers authenticity with their food, and also the important key that makes Asian food great: Balance. I went there two nights in a row. The first night I ordered the Panang Curry Shrimp. I had it before at a fancy "Asian Fusion Bistro" in St. Louis years ago, and I fell in the love with the sweet coconut milk, mixed with warm spices and a touch of lemongrass. Hunan executes this dish splendidly, and was the main reason I went back for night two. Also on the first night I picked up the Pad Thai. I am a Pad Thai snob and constantly seek out restaurants that fix this dish correctly. I tried shrimp Pad Thai from the actual Thai restaurant in town, Thai Noodle, a few months prior and it was both uninspired and flavorless. I was very pleased that Hunan made pad Thai correctly, although I added a lot of Sriacha (My guess is that the normal Mattoon crowd is not in to spicy). On night two I went back for the Panang Shrimp Curry once again. This time I ordered extra sauce and extra rice, because frankly the flavor is just that good. If you are interested in trying real Asian cuisine then this is the place to go. If you are seeking discount Americanized Chinese takeout then stay away. This restaurant and its food are a cut above the common in and out shop. Lastly, the waitress who always seems to be working, who I believe is the owner, is very kind, sweet, and pays attention to detail. She asked me both nights if I needed a spoon or fork, and double checked my order with me. I always appreciate when takeout orders are handled properly, as there is nothing worse then getting home and having the wrong food, or no napkin or plasticware. She is a real sweetheart, and runs a great restaurant! I would recommend this place to everybody read more

Excellent, charming and authentic. Hunan is a hidden little gem in Mattoon, Illinois. Only a block from the train station. We have been faithful customers for 30+ years. If you are expecting the all-you-can-eat Americanized hog-trough experience, you might be disappointed- they don't have that. What Hunan does offer is freshly prepared, hand crafted and artfully plated. Spotlessly clean table service, very moderately priced, and a truly delightful dining experience. We have never been disappointed with any dish at Hunan. Tip- Our favorite entree-Scallops and Pea Pods is to-die-for. It may not be on the menu but just ask for it. While on a fishing trip to lake Shelbyville, my dad and I had dinner at Hunan. The food here is spectacular, we had the cheese rolls, panang curry shrimp, and chicken with broccoli. I was visiting Mattoon for a family event. Every other restaurant in the area was thoroughly disappointing, so finding such great food at Hunan was a complete surprise. The food was nearly on-par with most authentic Chinese restaurants I've been to in California -- some of the tastes and spiciness were toned down a bit at Hunan from my usual restaurants at home, but overall it was delicious. I'd also say prices are comparable to what I pay around SF for entrees. They were good sized portions as well, with large chunks of meat or seafood. They even had brown rice as one of the rice options (steamed/fried as well). My only criticism was that it took a while to get our food. The sole waitress (Mae?) was constantly hustling and took great care of us, however. So likely it was just an issue with turnaround of meals in the kitchen. But everything arrived for our table of 6 at the same time (as we didn't eat family-style), and it was all fresh and steaming hot. read more

For some reason, this place gets a bad rap among the locals. Everything we've tried on the menu is very good. We usually get the vegetarian moo-shu with crab rangoon and fried rice. The old-school Chinese decorations give the place a nice, cozy atmosphere. This is one of the few Chinese restaurants that *is not* a buffet. Yay! They actually make food to order and don't dump it out by the bucketful into warming trays. My only complaint is that it's a little pricey for East Central Illinois. read more

This restaurant is amazing! The food is so fresh and very apparently made with love. I am a huge fan of how the chef takes such great pride in his/her work. Each plate that I ordered looked absolutely stunning; they were beautifully garnished and of course, equally delicious - definitely reminded me of my own mom's cooking :) Make sure to order something with basil in it - so good!!! I also love the atmosphere!! I would absolutely have group events/parties here. The space is huge and very authentically Asian yet tastefully modern. It's also homey enough that I would bring a book to read if I had an afternoon to myself. But most importantly, the staff here treats everyone that walks through the door like family. I can't say this about many restaurants but the owner is just one-of-a-kind. She is so incredibly sweet and takes great care of her customers- she works so hard to keep us happy and it is most definitely appreciated :) I really CANNOT believe not more people are making this a regular place to eat/hang out!! I've eaten at Hunan for many years and still love her food. Mae does a great job and fresh cooks everything. If you want it customized, she's happy to accommodate. My favorite is Hunan Chicken or Volcano beef, both are spicy which I love. Fresh cooked is much better than the dried-out buffet food at other places. read more

Best Chinese food in the charleston and mattoon area. One lady works the whole place so service and wait time is slow. They have a good selection of sea food if you like that. When I went with my boy friend we got sweet and sour chicken, empress shrimp, egg drop soup and egg rolls. (2 enters, 1 appetizer and 1 soup) The total cost was $36 which was crazy for how small the portions were. Bottom line: if you want the best Chinese food, have the time to wait, and the money to spend than try it out. read more

My fiance and I stop at Hunan whenever we visit his family in Mattoon. We love it! My favorite dish is the Beef and Scallops - I was so surprised the first time I had it how fresh the seafood was! The egg rolls are also excellent (handmade by the owner herself!) and come with a homemade sweet and sour sauce. All that said, I've never had anything that wasn't delicious here. Hunan Chinese is by far the best Chinese restaurant that I have dined here in the US. There is a great atmosphere with Chinese decorations, mood lighting and music. The basil chicken is so delicious, moo-shu pork is great, but the Hunan fish is definitely the best dish on that menu. Not only does it look great on the plate but it is so delicious. We were traveling through the area (from Chicago) and thought we would try this restaurant. My expectations were very low as I was not expecting to find as good a Chinese restaurant as this place. It's a very large restaurant, extremely clean, polite service, and an extensive menu. We ordered the crab rangoon appetizer, egg foo young, moo shoo pork, and beef broccoli. The entrees were delicious -- excellent cook. Very high quality ingredients and expertly prepared. Veggies were not overcooked. The moo shoo was as good as you will find anywhere. This place is such a gem-hidden in central Illinois of all places! I've made it routine to eat here while traveling from my hometown in N. Illinois to where I currently reside in TN. The food tastes delicious and the presentation is comparable to a high-end restaurant. The restaurant is always clean and the staff are friendly. I much prefer supporting local businesses over chains and buffets so this is an all-around feel-good meal choice! :) read more
