There aren't a ton of restaurants to choose from in Monticello so we took our chances on Golden Kitchen. I was so glad we did! Quick take out service (you can also eat in), yummy fresh food. It's not on the menu but you can replace any chicken dish for tofu. The servings were large so we're unable to finish ours. I abstained from the hotel breakfast to finish my Chinese in the room. We ordered a take out order on a Sunday and picked it up just after noon. We ordered Szechuan Chicken marked as "Spicy" on the menu, and Mongolian Beef as well, and Egg Drop soup and a single egg roll. The staff that took the order over the phone and handled the transaction we I picked the order up were very polite and pleasant, and also very efficient. But like most restaurants the most important part is the food. Overall we were not very impressed with what we received. Normally Szechuan foods have a rich spicy flavor, or a least a nice spicy kick or punch to it. The chicken I got came in very sweet brown sauce with no heat at all almost like they forgot to add the Szechuan peppers (or at least red pepper flake), the veggies were a bit over cooked, and the chicken had little to no flavor. The Mongolian beef was in the exact same sweet brown sauce and was so lacking in beef my girlfriend questioned if it was in fact a vegetarian version. She counted two pieces of beef in the whole serving. The rice was slightly over cooked almost like what you would find on a buffet table at the end of the lunch rush. The soup was flavorful with plenty of egg, and the egg roll was crispy but similar to what you find the in the freezer section of an Asian market. Not sure if we just hit them on a bad day, or if this is how the food normally is. Most likely it will be a long time before we try them again, if at all. read more

Living in a small town and trying to find a good Chinese restaurant is almost impossible. After the wife needed to run an errand in Monticello, we came across The Golden Kitchen along the way home. She ordered me take out, for my dinner when she returned home. I must say, I had the best Chinese food in our limited area..hands down! My wife was greeted friendly, the portions were perfect for my dinner, and at reasonable prices. In the future, I now know where I'll be going in the future! read more

Let me briefly paint the scene for you... "woosah" You're in Monticello, IL for your first time.. You see nothing but long stretches of flat earth in every direction.. Its like the sky never ends.. Then all of a sudden things turn for the worst.. YOU CRAVE CHINESE FOOD BUT YOU'RE IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE! This cant be happening! my favorite chinese restaurant is 7 hours away via jet and the first time I want some classic Chinese to pig down on Im hundreds of miles away from home.. But thankfully Golden Kitchen saved the day! I had expected very little from the small Chinese restaurant because not only was it the ONLY Chinese restaurant in the surrounding area but it was one of the few options available for our weekend stay. But lets talk about the food.. cause it was goooood! We ordered: General Tso's chicken, low mein (Obviously), fried rice, egg drop soup, egg rolls, shrimp fried rice, shrimp low mein, sweet and sour chicken, and dumplings- that I promise you almost vanished off the table. All of the food was fresh made, tasted good, came with an adequate amount of condiments, hot, juicy, basically everything you would want your chinese to be. The MVP's of the meal go to the General Tso's chicken and dumplings because Im telling you they were cooked to perfection lmao! I ate my dumpling in one bite and it fit perfectly in my mouth and delivered a package of savory delight to my taste buds. I was very pleased with the meal overall. But this is the kicker. Why am I going the next step to give a 5 star review? Because like I said previously, the Monticello area really doesn't have a VAST amount of options to dine out and if you're looking for some good food that might suprise you during your stay in flat earth Illinois, stop by Golden Kitchen. The amount of food is crazy for the how cheap it was. We had two 5th graders split the chicken nuggets and they still had leftovers to take home. It was less than $7 for it. I got a veggie dish that was better than anything I've had in Champaign. Make the drive to Monticello, it's worth it. read more

I ate the Triple Delight one day and came back to order it for takeout again the next day because it was so good! My husband had the Mu Shu Pork and we ate every bite and scooped up all the sauce too. This is a small place with modest but comfortable decor and excellent service. My family appreciated that they had chicken nuggets and fries for the one kid that won't eat anything else, such an easy thing for a restaurant to have on the menu but it makes a difference to families with kids! I lived in LA for 35 yrs. and there were about 15 Chinese restaurants within a 5 mi. radius of my home. We ate a lot of Chinese cuisine over the years, and what we had from Golden Kitchen was about the worst, taste-wise and value-wise. We ordered three entree's and an appetizer. Almost immediately after eating the take out, both my wife and I were seized with cramps and headed for the bathroom. We unwisely gave about a tablespoonful to your 125-lb. Lab and he soon threw up. The fried won-ton was cooked to shoe leather. The three entrees were mostly vegetables, with minimal meat. We ordered the pint size entrees and all three were packed in pint plastic dishes that were filled half with rice and about a cup of the actual entree, rather than the 2-cups that equal a pint. Most Chinese restaurants in our experience give you the entrees and rice packed separately so you get what you paid for. The won-ton had no sauce. There were no packets of soy-sauce or won-ton sauce included and there weren't even fortune cookies. All-in-all, a bad experience - made us sick, and we felt gypped with the quantity and quality.
