Lunch special menu.
Belly G.

Their lunch special is awesome. For a low price, you get fried rice, eggroll, a little bit of salad, an entree of your choice, and soup. I usually get their cashew chicken or Scallion beef for lunch special. But sometimes, when I don't feel like ordering from the lunch menu, I'd get me some Gai Lan Chicken fun or Orange chiken, or even wonton soup. This four star rating was given with some reservation though. It's mostly for the food because I love me some greasy Chinese food. However, just like other restaurants in Chinatown, you're crazy if you're expecting great, or even good service.

I was craving shredded pork and bamboo, and this is the only restaurant I know of that has this besides Yantze. Since Yantze became so gross after the new ownership years ago, I've been searching high and low. On yelp, it shows the prices here were still cheap at $5.50 or less. My mistake. I called and ordered for pick up, and apparently, everything is about $7.99 or higher. I would have gone to my usual places for that price. I didn't knock any stars off for being more expensive than I expected though. As for the food, the pork and bamboo was good. I got yu shiang chicken which was also good (but I've never had it anywhere else to compare it to). The sesame chicken was dry and hard on the inside. The house crispy noodles was bland and tasted just off. Would I come back? Not likely.

Best egg and shrimp ever! The prices are reasonable. Excellent service! So many dishes to try without breaking the bank.

They're open 7 days a week now--used to be closed on Tuesdays. Also, lunch specials are now $3.99, $4.35 after tax. It's still a great deal compared to other places around town.

Best place for onion pancake in chinatown... lunch specials are good and very cheap. I felt little salty every dish...

We have been coming here for many years and the food taste per the cost is still worth it. Cashew nut chicken is by far my favorite. Decor is subpar but man the food is good.

The original owners who started this place had a really great thing going. We used to eat here all the time and actually got to know the owner's daughter Lisa pretty well. She was always very cordial to us and knew us on a first name basis. I can't tell you how many take out orders that I've gotten from this place. Too many to remember! But since they moved to a new restaurant Yangtze...we have hardly been back. Well the other day I decided to check it out and found out it hasn't really changed that much inside. I ordered my favorite lunch special expecting the free soup that I could always expect with it but was told that they didn't offer that. I only received a 3/4 full small bowl of lukewarm and watered down hot & sour soup....bummer. I do have to admit though that the lunch special that came out was pretty generous. A nice round plate with a nice mound of rice...some chopped up lettuce..not sure what that was for...an eggroll and the main course which tasted decent. My only complaint was the lack of free soup! Come on guys that's what made Hunan Plus so special! It used to be you had to wait to get a seat in that place during lunch..when I was there it was hardly full! The next day I went to Yangtze but didn't see Lisa...I saw some unfamiliar faces but the food appeared the same and the soup was free! I hope Lisa and her family didn't sell the restaurant even though I didn't detect a difference in the quality of the food...But things change...The restaurant business is tough and the competition is always breathing down your neck so I wouldn't blame Lisa if she got out.. Anyways...Hunan Plus is not the same...I miss the old days. It's just ok.

My stomach is gurgling just thinking about this place.. and not the good kind of gurgle. The last time we went here I think some of the food was either dropped on the floor, rummaged through by rats/roaches, or just plain dirty b/c everyone had the runs for a couple days afterwards. I'm sure this place would make Marvin Zindler create a new title in his hall of shame. Yes this place is dirt cheap and the food isn't too bad but damn they probably haven't cleaned the kitchen since sliced bread was invented. It IS good training to eat here though if you intend to visit China/Taiwan for an extended period of time..

Are they closed permanently?

No, they took over the Yantze restaurant located right off the feeder of beltway and Bellaire. They brought all the chefs and the name is still in the process of being changed from Yanzte to Hunan Plus.

On my most recent visit we ordered mapo tofu with pork intestines off the specials menu - a hybrid of two of my favorite Sichuan-style dishes. The blend of bouncy, savory morsels amidst tender, saucy tofu was at once revolutionary and so obvious; why hadn't I yet seen this at any other restaurant? And sure, innards may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's important for you to know that none of my past orders from the 50+ item menu have ever failed me, whether enjoyed in the restaurant or at home. Maybe you'd prefer the aromatic, classic, perfectly balanced three-cup chicken? Or the sweet-skinned duck, glazed so delicately that specks of sugar crystal threaten to jump off onto the plate as you pick up a juicy slice with your chopsticks? And if you're vegetarian, might you consider the punchy garlic eggplant or the wok-kissed string beans? I could go on. Do yourself a favor and come see for yourself, though I'd recommend parallel parking on the neighborhood streets behind the restaurant rather than the rocky parking lot, to save you some trouble. Bring friends and chow down family style - you'll need help covering as much of the menu as you can, but you'll definitely have to come back to try everything.

The second time I visited, I had the Hong Shao Rou with mushrooms (Braised Pork Belly) to-go, not a huge fan of takeout and this didn't disappoint and it was good. The takeout team member was pleasant enough. They feature an open kitchen with two tops closer to the wall/glass and larger tables more toward the middle of the restaurant. From the outside it features the traditional Chinese architecture with western building base. I look forward to yaksying the rest of the menu this year.

Dishes like Szechuan Spicy Chicken is still one of my favorite, and Garlic Snow Pea Leaves are delicious when in season. Bamboo House still holds its place as great spot for group dining. The portion is generous, prices are fair, and overall a solid restaurant that's still worth recommending.

My friend Aurora wanted to meet Donna early dinner and gossip session and she really liked this place. (We tried having a team lunch at the Rice Village location during the cold front last Oct but they had no heat so we opted for a warmer place but she grabbed a to go on the way home) Here we are for a late lunch 3:45 pm on a Friday. Parking was none had to drive around the block and saw some movement and bam, someone was leaving. We ordered at the bar, staff was super nice and opted to sit outside. Did not realize they deliver to the table. Order: Mongolian beef combo with fried rice and egg roll $14.99 The food comes in takeaway style containers. Win. Mongolian beef (2.5/5) - slightly over sauced for me; beef was pretty tender and there were carrots and edamame which is not the standard so maybe that's what makes it fusion? Fried rice (3/5) - standard style fried with small pieces of bean sprouts which I love so that was a nice surprise Egg roll (3/5) - I assume it was chicken because I didn't realize there was a choice) - it was crunchy and soft on the inside which I like, and pairs well with sriracha (did not eat till I got home) They seem to do a whole lot of take away. The staff were nice and hard working. I was excited when they first opened bc they had chow fun on the menu and being HK Cantonese, I love that dish but when I ordered it the 1st and 2nd time eight years ago instead of bean sprouts they had cabbage and that alters rhe flavor tremendously. I see why it's popular among the people but just don't think it is for my taste.

She immediately asked what we wanted in a rude tone, which set an uncomfortable atmosphere from the start. There was a sign on the table advertising a "free appetizer" if you take a photo and tag the restaurant on social media. I followed the instructions exactly as stated, but when I mentioned it, the server initially refused to honor the promotion. After I pointed out the sign, she appeared upset and walked away. I saw she went to speak to another employee and cracked a smiled and looked over. She later returned and offered a small discount instead. The issue wasn't about the money or the discount, it was the principle. The promotion was clearly advertised, and I simply followed the restaurant's own policy. It was disappointing to feel like the restaurant was reluctant to honor something they were actively promoting. I hope management addresses this because customer service and consistency with advertised promotions make a big difference in the overall dining experience.
