R house is a family staple of mine. I grew up eating here and I can say it is still the same after many years! No frills, chinese restaurant - dare I say it's a hole in the wall. It does get busy sometimes especially during peak hours and there are only two servers so service can be a bit slow, but usually it's fine. Before I get into the food review, do note..it's not the most clean place. Now, the food! Yummy, just go at the right time (sometimes if you go between lunch and dinner like around 3... the oil is not fresh/new so it's oily and you can taste the old oil) 1) Salt and pepper fish fillet - Amazing, very nicely fried and lightly battered. It is not heavy. It is seasoned well, flavorfully salty and peppery with some jalapenos (yes, it's spicy if you eat the peppers). The fish feels fresh and not fishy. Tender with a nice slight crunch from the fried battered outside. 2) Sauteed string beans with minced pork - Delicious, especially eaten with rice to sop up the flavor from the minced pork and pickled veggies. The string beans are flavorful. It is a salty, savory, slightly sweet flavor with the right crunch on the green bean. This place popped up as a contender for best lunch spot in Chinatown. I had visited over a decade ago with mediocre results. With the insanely inexpensive prices for lunch specials, it's no wonder it's a popular spot. I appreciate the large selection and nice portions on the lunch menu. I've been a couple times recently and tried a few items, including fried sole, salt and pepper squid, sweet and sour pork, beef with onions, salt and pepper tofu, and hot and spicy, shrimp and eggs, chicken and shrimp. First off, please on please pass on that sweet and sour pork. That sauce is just gross. I'm sorry. It was all sweet with no sour. I was able to somewhat improve it by dousing it in vinegar, but this dish was one of the worst dishes I've ever ordered.... period. Not sure why people on Yelp praise it. I think most Asians will want to throw this dish out the window. The rest of the dishes were average to pretty good. The whole fried sole is probably the most popular dish. I also really enjoyed the salt and pepper tofu, eggs and shrimp, and the hot and spicy chicken and shrimp for lunch. At $6.50 a dish, this is probably the most bargain deal lunch special. Service is friendly but a bit lacking. They aren't super attentive. Both visits, we had to remind them to bring out our drinks after the food was already served, and both visits we had dishes that arrived at the table way later after we were halfway done with the previous dishes. Came here because of good reviews, walk out disappointed. It is one of the few restaurants that open late. Fried rice and noddle are very good. You can tell they cook it from scratch and high heat. But the beef taste like a week old. Sweet and sour pork should be easy to make, but they still manage to mess it up. Sauce is bland, gallons of red dye in the sauce. Meat is thin and mostly cover in batter. Pineapple is like a month old. Brisket pot was a bowl of fat. Just get fried rice or stir fry noodles if you decide to come here. read more

Came here for lunch on a Wednesday morning with a men's group, and heard many good reviews about this place. It's always nestled next to King Bakery (which has some great Chinese pastries), and I've heard of the value for the price you pay for the food, so let's check it out! We came across the lunch menu that has some great dishes at only $7-$8 from 11am-3pm, super great deal for the amount of food that you get! Most of the food was good, I'll tell you what we ordered: Salt and Pepper Squid - Delicious! Eggplant with Garlic Sauce - nice vegetable dish! Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce - Nice crunch and taste Salted and Pepper Pork Chop - nice and tender! Mixed Vegetable with Beef - good amount of both and it's tasty! With these dishes at $6.50, you can't go wrong! Only concern I had is the lack of waiting staff. You go inside and seat yourself, but there was only one waitress and everyone else was in the kitchen. A friend recommended this place. What a regret. Came in, sat for awhile before even getting menus. Then, another while before drink (only water and iced tea) came out. Another while to order the food. See the pattern yet? And now, 45 minutes later after ordering 4 simple items for lunch, my friend and I are still wondering where our food is as we simply see our life passing by. Good lord. Im the end, 3 out of 4 items came out but cold. We both took a bite and said enough is enough at this point. Told the waitress to cancel the last item, paid for the other 3 that we brely touched, and left. Come here only if you have a reason to question your life choices while endlessly waiting, including your choice for coming here. I sure did but will never again. Wow, wish we knew about this place earlier! Their lunch prices are unbelievable. There are dozens of entrees for just $6.50 each. And it's available every day of the week including weekends. What about the portions? You would expect lunch-size portions with a bowl of rice. Nope, they give you the whole plate of entree - something you would only expect for dinner, with rice separately in a container. What about the taste and quality? It was frankly quite good - definitely better than we were expecting for the price and quantity. How do they even make money? The service was adequate, and the interior is not fancy. R House is one of my go-to's for late night less-than-glamorous Cantonese food. Like many of the Canto options in Chinatown, the food is neither exceptional nor terrible, but perfectly passable when it's past midnight. Similarly to their neighbor FuFu Cafe, they are open late daily and have been a reliable source of seafood, carbs, and all of the above. As per usual, the English name has nothing to do with the Chinese name. R House is likely a play on words for "Our House" but the Chinese name 華洋 (Wah Yeung) is extremely common for Canto establishmens. Wah/Hua for Chinese and Yang/Yeung for foreign, makes for a fitting name especially for being in the US. The place is very modest, with handful of round tables and a very dated decor. The bathrooms are a bit on the less appealing side and the parking is vast due to being inside of DunHuang Plaza. Somehow the later it gets, the more likely I'll come across a ton of tables where dishes from previous parties remain. The food is affordable and the portions are solid. I don't think anything stands out frankly, but when they're versatile enough to handle most dishes. Avoid the soups and anything intricate with the stir fry (wok hei is a tinge weak). I have stuck to noodle dishes, as well as stir fried stuff like egg and shrimp and even beef chow fun and it's been a reliable choice. The staff speaks Cantonese and is very old school. I don't know how long places like this will last in today's Chinatown, but I really do hope that it'll remain a solid option for years to come. read more

Looking for a late night food place for Congee. Saw that this was supposed to have good congee. When I arrived, around 10 pm, all the tables were empty. Compared to the cafe beside it that was full. Thought i would give it a try since somebody said their congee was one of their specialities. I found the congee underwhelming. They did serve it hot.... Freshly made even but nothing to write home about. There were small chopped up pieces of pork and century egg. If you compare to the congee from the dimsum places, those were much better. Our House aka 華洋 'R House Restaurant has been my last night go-to place for many years. There was no exceptions on January 1st, 2022. Just the turn of calendar from a chaotic year of pandemic. I have been craving for soup and noodles. I think R House got what I needed. The menu had everything from a typical Cantonese restaurant. Employee was fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese and English. It was very easy to communicate. I noticed spaghetti in the menu. He explained it was Cantonese style with typical chow mein topping. It got me so interested because no one on Yelp reviews except for the first review from 2011 had mentioned spaghetti dish. It must be popular. He said they were sold out. I wonder if it was a new year's traditional food. Ok, I'll come back to try it later. I patiently waited for my stir fried seafood chow mein, shrimp fried rice and mixed vegetables soup. The dining room was filled up halfway. They were not in a hurry to clean up the table which I was sitting. They got many round tables with lazy Susie in the middle for family style dining. My order was takeout. When I got home, few hungry mouths were already looking at the chow mein. For me, the noodles were good. Seafood was fresh. But flavor was a miss. Fried rice was kind of bland but it was easily fixable. The soup... OMG... Lots of veggies in the little bit of soup. I think the container was too small. It got lots of green veggies cooked to perfection and soup was really flavorful. On my next visit, I'll order the same soup because I want to compare with my takeout experience. Not sure what to think, The staff are nice, the food for me is kind of plain but the white rice is delicious! Its so fluffy! What I didn't like is that for sweet tea they don't have refills, they do charge you and the place doesn't look that clean. They don't have croutons for the egg drop soup either. We ordered several dishes, according to my mom who's been here multiple times, the food is usually better, and the wait for the food isn't usually as long as it was today. We ordered the walnut mayo shrimp which only came with 6 shrimp. The white chicken barely had any meat and was a small portion to begin with. The garlic snow pea leaves were so so as there was a gelatinous substance on the veggies, apparently the corn starch wasn't mixed properly to make the sauce. The beef was also so so, not much taste. The toasted fish filet was probably the best of all the dishes. The sweet and sour chicken was decent too, it had a good batter on the outside and was moist on the inside. I had the Cantonese Hong Kong style sweet-and-sour pork, and my husband have the fillet steak with black pepper and we both had curried beef fried rice. That was very good. That food was tasty and very inexpensive. The two ladies who served us were very nice and I hope they get more customers. I was seriously craving some good ole crispy egg noodles nest and pan fried flat rice noodles in the middle of the night, and this place was one of the few that was still open (other places had early COVID closing time). We ordered the egg noodle nest with "happy family" meat combo of beef, chicken, and shrimp. We only wanted shrimps at first but the cashier told us that they only offer shrimps in that meat combo. The egg noodles were very crispy as it should be. They put the sauce in a separate container so the noodles wouldn't be soggy by the time we eat it. The sauce was just ok, a little too salty for my preference. Portion size was ok for the price. I was disappointed with the flat rice noodles because it didn't have the black-ish wok charred flavor that I was looking for. They just stir-fried the noodles. Maybe I went there at the wrong time of day and week. My friend and I came here for lunch on a Wednesday, and we ordered beef and broccoli and walnut shrimp from their lunch menu. My beef and broccoli is fine, but the walnut shrimp dish only came with 4 shrimps on a bed of shredded iceberg lettuce. It looked so sad, I get that inflation is really bad right now, but $6.95 for 4 shrimps are just sad and wrong on so many levels. The restaurant is located in the Dun Huang Plaza, which arguably one of the most popular plazas in Houston's Chinatown. As such, you may need to be prepared to spend some time finding parking. The restaurant signage is above the store, but not easy to spot right at the front of the store. The feel of the restaurant is pretty casual, nothing too fancy. Has a decent low-key vibe to it (I wouldn't recommend coming here for a first date though lol). The restaurant can probably seat around 40-50 at full capacity. My party had come for the lunch specials which is served even on weekends. The dishes we got were okay. I was impressed at the price point (especially in this inflationary economy), but not at the quality of the food. Wasn't horrible, just not something I'd necessarily come back to, since there are so many other options in the area. I also was not a fan of how some of the dishes/utensils were not cleaned very well. I get that this can happen from time to time, but I did notice that there were a few things that were not clean just at our table. Finally, I didn't feel like the service here was particularly great. There were a few moments when the servers were bringing the food to our table where the interaction felt borderline rude from them. Again, I wasn't really surprised, but this does dock a few points from the overall score of the place. Authentic and at bargain prices! The one thing though that weighs is the large menu that can make it difficult to choose something. First and foremost I want to say this place is for sure worth a visit, I'd tread on the side of caution though to be careful with what you choose as some dishes I found superbly better than others. I feel as though if I had the recommendation of previous visitors or guidance with the menu my experience would've been much much better. With that said I highly enjoyed their fried calamari, tofu, and veggie entrees. They come at very cheap prices and taste very very good! I did have though high expectations for their noodle bowels and ended up getting the shredded pork. Sadly though the flavor of the broth and noodles were pretty bland, the meat though was good. With that I believe that certain dishes again certainly are much better than others, I just wish that I had a list of the most recommended dishes before coming in due to the sheer size of the menu. The atmosphere of the place is as you would expect for an authentic place, so very hole in the wall, family style feel.
