I work in the Energy Corridor and have now been to Hunan Kitchen 5-10 times for lunch with both Chinese and American co-workers. The food and service have been consistently great. The cuisine is authentic Hunan Chinese - boldly flavored, spicy (but not too spicy) and complex. The owner is very personable and always takes the time to say hi and visit when we're there. I especially like Chairman Mao's Favorite Pork Belly (毛氏红烧肉), large chunks of wonderfully-flavored, tender pork belly with just the right amount of fat and skin (which can be removed if you're averse to eating fat, but you'd be missing out on the flavor and silkiness it imparts to the dish). Another favorite is Green Peppercorn Fish Fillet (青花椒鱼片), tender slices of fish in a spicy, fragrant sauce. However, everything I've tried has been as good as I found in China. I will continue to patronize this excellent restaurant frequently and encourage others to try it as well. read more

Hands down. Best Chinese restaurant in Katy. I have been lived in California for many years. Lots of good Chinese restaurant in California. I am so glad I found this one in Katy. The taste is super great. Service is good. People are attentive. I like smashed trio, hot sauce boiled beef, sautéed pork with serrano pepper, dry fried string. Everything is great. Very tasty and love the seasonings and spiciness. The vegetable egg rolls were small, but very tasty. The shrimp lo mein was fantastic, swimming in sauce and lots, lots, lots of garlic plus lots of shrimp! The combination fried rice was very good, not the best in Katy, however a large amount. The chicken Kung pao was very spiced with small red peppers. Rice done well. In all a good place and we need to try other items on the menu! read more

Best authentic Chinese Food in Katy! Great food and excellent service! Ordered fish head with chopped red chili, old Changsha snack, and smashed trio. Everything is so delicious...... red chopped chili is amazing, traditional Hunan Style. Spicy and good! The fish is so fresh! If you don't eat bone-in fish. They also offer fish fillet. It was surprisingly good Hunan cuisine. Came for dinner on Sunday, was a bit in doubt seeing it's quite empty. Happy to find both the service and food were really nice. Especially impressed by a couple of dishes out of the five we ordered. The smoked beef with white chili pepper (腊牛肉白辣椒)was very authentic and the flavor was perfect. My partner, who was very picky on food and very reluctant to try anything he hadn't had before, suspiciously had a taste after I finally convinced him. And he totally loved it! The "smoked bamboo shoot and pig stomach(烟笋肚丝)" was super delicious, the best I had for long time. The spicy pork (小炒肉) has good flavor, though the pork was a bit too lean. Overall it was very delicious, I will definitely come back and try more dishes. read more

It was ok... maybe I got the wrong thing. I'm not fully sure what exactly it was that I got but it was very different from anything I've ever had. I feel I'm pretty adventurous and try lots of different foods but I don't think this is my kinda thing. The atmosphere is pretty cool tho! read more

This an update to my visit to Hunan Kitchen. I returned today because the owner was kind enough to offer a complementary combination rice because of my 1st experience. I was very impressed and really appreciated it!!!! When I returned today, the owner was not there. However, the gentleman at the cash register called her to verify it, which I had no problem with him doing so. She confirmed that it was legit. The gentleman took my order and I could see him explaining the order to the chef. I got home and it was the moment of truth. Now this time around there wasn't as much meat as the previous time and no extra green onions, which I couldn't believe because I repeated it twice!!!! There were plenty of regular onions. The shrimp tasted funny. However, the rice was fresh and plentiful!!! I requested extra spicy and it was right on this time!!!! I will return and I will order the combination rice again. Hopefully, I will get those extra green onions that I keep requesting!!! LOL!!! Thank you for providing accommodating customer service!!! I really appreciate it!!!! read more

New style and display of braised pork with preserved vegetable. Served with bun. Taste good. It will better if steamed a bit longer. The porched sliced fish fillet in hot chili oil is one of the best, maybe the best, ever I had for a long time. It's mildly hot and not too salty. Perfectly balanced flavors between the fish and the soup. High recommended. read more

Great authentic Chinese food (specially if you ask for the Chinese Menu, which has an English translation. Must good Chinese restaurants have a second menu only for Chinese customers as the average American consumer, they believe, won't like the authentic stuff as well as the Americanized version). If you think TexMex is real Mexican food... you probably should just got to Star Buffet and you will be happier, but if you've been to China and thought the food was awesome there, then you will like this place, best in Katy by far). Portions are also generous and while a bit more expensive than you average Chinese buffet it is pretty reasonable, specially given the quality. I rate restaurants based on the quality of the food, that 90% of the score for me. Devour, location, service etc is only 10% to me, but service was great and the place wasn't bad, definitively not fancy for sure, but clean and friendly. I hope the manage to stay open, they are new and don't seem to have done much marketing so we keep our fingers crossed. read more

We figured we'd give this place a shot being we received a menu in the mail. Delivery time was good, however, the food was horrible. We ordered the orange peel chicken which tasted like they poured an entire bottle of salt in for seasoning. Couldn't even taste any orange flavoring. The chicken tasted old or reheated; kind of dried out. We also ordered the chicken lo mein (or as they spell it lo main) which was made with spaghetti noodles which I've never seen in lo mein and it was also very salty and had a strong vinegar taste. Lastly, we ordered the pan fried pork dumplings. They were ok, had a good outer crisp. We will never be ordering from here again, sadly we tossed all our food after a couple bites. We order delivery from them often. It is affordable and free delivery. Food is always hot and fresh! We haven't been let down yet. 4 stars is because if you don't tip what they think you should they get an attitude. We had one delivery guy knock on our door repeatedly because he didn't have a tip but we had already included it on the credit card slip. Unfortunately. I was a bit peeved that we were not notified of a lunch special when we were being seated. The waitress only passed us a menu that did not contain a lunch section, so I thought there was not one. It wasn't until I noticed the people around us were reading off a to-go menu where there was the lunch special listed. After I asked our waitress to change our order to reflect the lunch special, she seemed ticked off even though what we ordered was also listed as a lunch option. We did not receive our soup until after our meal was served and the entire time I just got the vibe our waitress was annoyed. I ordered the Mongolian beef, which was basically a bowl of onions cooked with small pieces of meat. It was salty and I thought the meat held no flavor. The wonton soup wasn't as great either; the wonton texture seemed raw and the broth tasted like hot water. Overall, I found the lunch to be over priced and not as tasty. The only plus was that the food came out hot. Overall, the service was not receptive and the food didn't do it for me. If you come during the lunch hour, make sure you specify to the wait staff that you would like to see a lunch menu. read more

This is a nice and cozy place for great Chinese food. Most food are spicy and you can ask to adjust the spice level. Of course they also offer non-spicy food. One of my favorite food is Dan Dan noodle, a traditional Chinese noodle dish with warmed noodle covered by meat source, green onion and peanut. This introduces a combination of various texture and flavor. The greatest thing is that it is not too spicy to me but gives a comfortable hot kick in mouth. In one of my parties, this was the first dish with an empty trail. read more

Been here several times and everything tried so far has been excellent. Good combination of "American" & authentic Chinese dishes. The smashed trio is unique if you can handle the spice & 1,000-year eggs. Our first visit & we really liked it! We ordered the the triple family noodle dish, which was super flavorful! We also had the spicy crispy chicken. I'm a 'sauce' kinda girl myself & would've like it to have some sort of dipping sauce on the side, but the chicken was very tasty! I will go back & try some other dishes & even take pics! Absolutely amazed. Having lived in mainland China for many years, eating here immediately sent me back. It was incredibly authentic - simple, fresh ingredients cooked well. Friendly service and inexpensive. This is honestly the best Chinese in Houston right now (they have stiff competition), but seriously the flavors are so spot on. Not too fancy - simple and done impeccably well. I wish I lived in Katy, I'd be here every other day. read more
