hunan kitchen has been a staple for yearssss, truly my fav restaurant ever and hands down the best chinese food i've had!! the interior has plenty of seating, making it great for both family dinners and group gatherings. the owners are a couple: a super friendly woman and the diligent chef. the service is always attentive and fast and the food comes out SOOO quickly. portions are also huuuge at consistently high quality. what really sets this place apart is the depth of flavor, the spice levels are just right. you taste the chili, sichuan peppercorn, and mala fragrances, along with that unmistakable wok hei!! nothing feels muted or overly aggressive. - one must-order is the hunan bbq fish (君山烤鱼). at just over $30, ITS SUCH A STEALLL for what you get: an entire seabass served in a massive chafing dish, surrounded by a medley of vegetables like cauliflower, potatoes, lotus root, and peppers. the fish is tender and flaky, not overly salty or spicy, but infused with a beautifully fragrant mala heat. it's perfect for celebratory meals or sharing with a big group - the sautéed preserved pork with dried smoked bamboo shoots (烟笋炒腊肉) is an absolute classic. the cured pork belly has an intense smokiness that hits you immediately, with alternating bites of rich fatty pieces and deeply savory lean cuts. the bamboo shoots add texture and soak up all that flavor - their poached sliced beef in hot chili oil (水煮牛肉) is another standout. the beef is incredibly succulent, swimming in a chili oil broth that's bursting with aroma without being overwhelming. this dish can often be too oily or salty elsewhere, but hunan kitchen nails the balance! - the sauteed diced chicken with chili pepper (辣子鸡) is my all time FAVVV and something i've loved since growing up. the chicken is perfectly crispy and crunchy while staying juicy on the inside. paired with dried chilies and peppercorns, the numbing spice slowly creeps in and builds as you eat. its ADDICTING in the most dangerous way, and i genuinely cannot stop eating it every time - the stir-fried diced chicken with green peppercorn (青花椒鸡丁) offers a slightly different flavor profile that i really love. the chicken is tender, and the green peppercorn brings a refreshing, citrusy, almost electric numbing sensation that feels lighter and brighter compared to red chilies. it's bold and a really fun contrast to some of the other dishes - for something non spicy, the seafood and japanese tofu (海鲜玉子豆腐) is PURE COMFORT FOOD for me. the tofu is lightly crisped on the outside but sooo silky inside, topped with soft fish fillets, huge shrimp, and a rich, glossy sauce packed with umami. i ascend every single time i eat it LOL overall, hunan kitchen is insanely worth it for the price. the portions are massive, the quality is consistently high, and for how authentic and flavorful the food is, it's honestly such a steal. you get way more than what you pay for, especially when ordering family style, and they even offer lunch specials, which makes it easy to come back often for a quick meal. it's such an underrated spot in katy and i wish more people talked about it :') this place deserves way more love!! read more

And I said I live close by I see that you do, free delivery. No I don't have driver so you want or no? Truly after that I didn't want to order, but I decided to do it anyways. I'm truly upset with myself that I did, because I truly got such poor costumer service. Picked up my to go order the restaurant wasn't busy. Maybe that's why I had received poor costumer service. Nope, not the case. Did I get a better costumer service when I went to pick up my food nope. I got the beef lo mein not flavorful, I've had better. The wanton soup was decent. Drove almost 1 hour to have dinner in this restaurant. The FOOD was good, BUT, SERVICE was TERRIBLE. When we step in, the lady with short hair just ask how many ppl and point a high chair table to us. Tip: Get the Soft Bacon with Bao! Everything else was great too but the bao dish was awesome! Food: More Sichuan than american chinese, if that helps. Food can be spicy. But they have american chinese dishes too. There were 2 dishes that caught my eye. One is called "soft bacon with bao". Bao is a steam bun. You stuff the bao with tender pork belly and sauce, kinda like a taco. It is one of my favorites. The pork belly melts in your mouth. My picky kids devour them. The other dish is "crispy spicy chicken". These are like chicken nuggets except served with hot peppers. So good too! We also ordered the Chicken Lo Mein. Once again, it was very taste and my kids agreed. They get my extra 5th star because that awesome Bacon and Bao dish!!! Place: Very clean and modern. Casual dress. Good number of tables and even one large table for group of maybe 8. TVs also available. Service: we were seated immediately. Food came out pretty fast too. I'd been wanting to place an order here, try it out, for some time. With the "spottiness" of some of the reviews, though, I held off. I'm glad I FINALLY tried Hunan Kitchen. The online order was quick and easy. The food was prepared and ready to go when I walked in to pick up. There can be some parking issues, but I was lucky and snagged the only empty spot. We ordered the fried pork dumplings and beef fried rice. The fried dumplings were perfect - hot, crispy and not a single sign of excess grease. The filling was dense but flavorful. I disliked the high vinegar content of their dipping sauce but usually end up making my own anyway. -1 star The beef fried rice? Y'ALL. OMG. This is the best beef fried rice I've had in Katy (and my Love will tell you that I have tried them all). The rice itself was well cooked, no clumps, well seasoned. But that big, juicy, flavorful beef (and so MUCH of it) was delicious. Do I wish there were vegetables instead of just scallions? Sure - but the beef was so good I didn't miss it at all. Even my Love (who is 'meh' about fried rice) has 2nd and then 3rd helpings! Great taste, great value. We will be back. I can't wait to try some of the other items on their menu! read more

So I'll start this way; my wife says 5 stars. I say 3 stars. So I'm going to meet in the middle with 4 stars but please read ahead. My wife is from Chongqing, China. I was born and raised in Houston, TX. A lot of Chinese takeout that I adore, my wife thinks is so-so. Every once in a while we get Chinese food that she absolutely RAVES about...this restaurant being one of those. Me? I thought it was so-so. So I'm starting to think that we've got two kinds of Chinese restaurants; those that have a more Americanized flavor and those that are more authentic Chinese. To me this food lacked flavor and whatever it was all cooked in, it made it taste the same. The beef and broccoli I could not differentiate the beef, carrots, or broccoli if it wasn't for the texture. Even the steamed rice seemed to have this flavorless flavor to me (I know that makes no sense!) Meanwhile my wife is eating her spicy fish and shouting "Five stars! Five stars!" while making all manner of pleasurable noises while eating. She absolutely LOVES the food! Maybe my dish and soup isn't a specialty. After all, I admittedly don't eat a ton of authentic Chinese food. But I would say give this place a try to see for yourself. And if you prefer authentic Chinese? My friend wanted authentic Hunan cuisine which is her motherland back in China. We had a group of 11 people and she ordered a whole bunch of dishes for us. We had a range from semi spicy to spicy and one sweet dish (Old Changsha snack - glutinous rice cakes with sesame seeds/syrup). My favorite dishes were the spicy oil wontons, house special spiced beef noodle (dry), and the old Changsha snack. The super spicy dishes I couldn't handle were the chopped up green beans and the veggie mixture dish that comes with white buns (similar to the kind you get with Peking duck). The restaurant was a full house at 6 in the evening and there were only two waitresses which was a bit annoying. So we ordered in today delivery was great we got the food earlier than expected, it was very well packaged, But no sauces and no napkins or anything like that. I got sesame chicken, the chicken tasted pretty bland and unfortunately or fortunately I have very sensitive taste to meat that's old. And the chicken definitely didn't taste fresh, and the white rice was undercooked. My sister got the seafood lo mein. It definitely had nice portion of seafood, shrimp, fish,scallops and calamari. For the dishes, I loved the 锅盔回锅肉 (twice cooked pork). It has the perfect balance of spice and flavor that works really well with rice. I ordered beer duck and hot boil fish for take out order. Beer duck was okay taste, however the portion is small and it's about $18. The boil fish was below average compared to others. My mom was ecstatic to try out this place due to her friends mentioning it through the grapevine known as WeChat. The fresh "Swimming Fish" tasted very fresh, but the fish itself lacked flavor. I think that's how fresh fish is typically cooked in Chinese tradition with a flavorful broth - which was pretty good. The Mao's braised pork came out beautifully presented and was a great hong shao rou dish. In addition, the eggplant was good too, but was soaked in oil. Ordered delivery- Got the Moo Shu Pork with Chinese Pancakes and the Mao's Family Style Red Braised Pork Belly dish. Both dishes were flavorful- the mushrooms in the Moo Shu dish were a unique touch. I must say I was surprised to have received steamed buns as the "pancakes" that come with Moo Shu, but they actually paired nicely together. The Pork Belly dish was tender and very tasty.
