Mushroom salad, pork & chive dumplings (this was okay)
    Shannyn Q.

Take this review as it is and I'm just writing from my experience here. It's a small, cozy restaurant in a busy plaza. Parking was hard to find but that's not the restaurant's fault. The food was pretty good for the most part. The broth of the soup was flavorful and I liked the homemade noodles from the beef soup my friend and I ordered. In my opinion, I would give the overall flavor of the food 4 stars just because the meat of the dumplings itself wasn't as flavorful as I'd hope. However, the wood ear mushroom salad was phenomenal. The service though, was subpar. I didn't have a good experience because of my food allergy. I'm allergic to crustaceans. The first thing the lady asked was what kind of drink we wanted - my friend asked for warm tea. She proceeded to look at her funny and kind of gave her a bit of an attitude and said "what's warm tea?". My friend meant hot tea and ordered that. It was a weird vibe from her but we thought nothing of it. Then when it was time to order the food, I ordered the pork and mushroom xialongbao and even pointed to it. The lady proceeded to upsell and asked if we wanted to order the pork and crab version instead. I asked my friend if she wanted it and I just won't eat it and she said no. Then, the lady proceeded to say something about ordering pork and shrimp (we didn't understand) but we didn't say anything about it. We didn't confirm anything, we just didn't respond. Not sure if she assumed or what. We just wanted to order the pork and mushroom xialongbao. The one I pointed to. Then the food came out. I noticed the xialongbao had a tiny piece of shrimp at the top. I thought it was a mistake. I opened it up and saw a big piece of shrimp inside next to the pork. I thought, maybe the pork/mushroom xialongbao has shrimp too and thought nothing of it. I decided to eat around the shrimp and the broth itself was tasty. Then I decided to go ahead and ask her if the pork and mushroom xialongbao included shrimp, she said no. I told her -- "oh we ordered pork and mushroom, not shrimp. I'm allergic. I wouldn't order this." And instead of acknowledging the mistake, she says "I confirmed with you and your friend that you ordered the pork & shrimp." I then said "no, we didn't confirm this because I'm allergic". She said "well maybe your friend confirmed it". I looked at her funny because I was the one who placed the order, my friend didn't speak. I was frustrated so I walked back to my table and just decided to eat the rest of my food. The chefs in the back asked her what happened so I guess she told them. She came back to our table and offered a few pork and mushroom xialongbaos but still doubled down on the fact that we confirmed the pork and shrimp one. We didn't want it because at this point I was full and frustrated. This was an honest mistake but it just irked me that she kept on insisting that she didn't make a mistake. I wish she would have owned up to maybe mishearing me or whatever instead of insisting that she was right. I could have easily given this place 5 stars even if there was a mistake made if she was kinder about it. But her attitude was quite off putting and I'm not sure that I'll be back again.

    Pork and scallion steamed dumplings

This is truly a hidden gem! We love steamed dumplings and they have a huge variety as well. I felt a little adventurous and tried the spicy beef pancake wrap and I'm so glad I did. It was so good, I ate it and forgot to take a picture. We also got an order of pork scallion dumplings and it was so fresh! Absolutely delicious. My husband also got an order of oil-splashed spicy noodles which was so good. We love chili oil. Cute little place and would recommend if you love dumplings.

This is a gem. I am in love. Here me out, the interior is clean and laid back. Nothing crazy fancy. Just clean tables and seats with a friendly server and cook in the back. Plenty of parking but also there's a lot of businesses in this plaza. Out of Katy Asian Town BUT still in Katy and easily get to, if you have a car. Braised Beef Noodle Soup - it was clean and light yet filling with clean beef flavored soup. How does one describe it? Just get it. The noodles has a nice chew but not too chewy. The flavors, ah... just delicious and my mom approved. DanDan Noodle - more peanut flavor that I would like but overall good. The right textures for the noodles, has ground meat and scallions. Perhaps a few slices of cucumbers on top would make it perfectly refreshing and satisfying. Spicy Wontons - spicy and oily. Overall good but I enjoyed their chicken wonton soup much more (which they accidentally gave to us instead of spicy wontons at first) Chicken wonton soup - delicious. It's light and flavorful with seaweed. Did I mention my mom approved? It's exactly how we make it at home on my mom's side. This was an accident that the cook made the wrong item but that's okay. We compensate by tipping them much more and getting to try this delicious wonton soup like how my grandmother makes it. Pork & Shrimp Xiaolongbao - delicious and full of soup so be careful. My mom is a pro and she still got it all over the place. She was surprised how much soup there was on the inside. The fillings are perfect. Only downside is, the top part is thicker than I would normally like and the bottom kept breaking even though I bit from the top. I consider myself a pro eating them but even I couldn't properly eat it. Just take extra caution. Also, it was the last dish to come out as it takes time. Please consider that. If you need time to order, make sure you place an order on the xiaolongbao the very least and then go through the menu. I was warned by my server so it was okay. If I have to recommend one thing, it would be their wontons. Just perfectly made and delicious. Not crazy expensive but not cheap either. If I had more stomach space, I would have ordered more. We will be back for sure. I already told my girl friends we're coming here for their wontons. Even my mother enjoyed it... my picky Asian mother, the pickiest of them all. She of course has her favorites and least favorite dishes but overall, she enjoyed it and enjoy spending time with me without yelling for spending money by going out when she can make it home type of lecture. You know what I mean? Thank you Dumplingholic House for making my life easier and being a gem. Eat up y'all!

new spot, glad we went. ordered wood ear mushrooms(appetizer, cold. love the texture of these mushrooms and subtly spicy) beef roll pancake (love the addition of crisp lettuce. it's not overtly salty like a lot of other places), shrimp wonton soup (broth was very good) and ofc shrimp xiao long bao!! these were so good. look at the pic and all the broth in them!! super fresh and none of them ripped. this spot is definitely worth the trip. it's a pretty cozy place. quick service.

We were visiting from out of state and had a craving for some good dumplings, and this place wasn't too far to drive from home, and had some good reviews, so off we went to try it out. This is a pleasant little clean, simple, and casual Chinese dumpling restaurant in a typical Houston shopping center. Service is very nice, friendly, and down to earth. As usual, dining with our mother means over ordering as much from the menu as possible, much more than an average diner could have reasonably eaten, and just pack the leftovers to go... if there was anything left :).... so, the 4 of us went ahead and ordered the Pork Xiao Long Bao, Braised Beef Noodle Soup, Chicken Bao (panfried), Pork Bao (panfried), Spicy Wonton, Onion Pancake, Sweet & Sour Cucumber, Spicy Noodles, Pork & Shrimp Dumplings (panfried), and the Chicken & Mushroom Dumplings (steamed). The dumplings and baos were all freshly made from scratch...we could see the lady making them behind the screen, and they came out super hot, fresh, and so yummy. The skins were perfect thickness, texture, and the fillings not too salty or sweet. The Spicy Noodles I tried was absolutely delicious, and the sweet and sour cucumber nice and cool, fresh, and crunchy. My only issues were that the dumplings and baos were a bit lacking in their amounts of filling, that they could have been a bit bigger in size, especially for the price being charged.... and we made this known to the nice server lady who acknowledged, appreciated our comments, and promised to convey our comments to the owner. The other issue I had was with the noodles.... they were a bit overcooked and too soft for my personal liking...I would have much preferred if the noodles were firmer. Other than that, all the flavors, freshness of ingredients, and preparation were absolutely spot on delicious!

Went during my lunch break and I was not disappointed, honestly 10/10. I was expecting for it to be jammed packed but surprised to only see another group of 3 there.. this place definitely needs more recognition. I had the pork soup dumplings and they were delicious and juicy, also ordered the pork buns (steamed) and they were packed with lots of flavor ! I also ordered the spicy wontons and let me just say that I was very happy, they had a hint of honey that evened out the spice and was the highlight of my meal, ordered the spicy sour cucumbers and it was perfect for that refreshing touch. If you are ever in the Katy area I definitely recommend!

Great place for a variety of dumplings and noodles. The Soup Dumplings (XLB) are our favorite here now. Nice, hot, soupy filling with just the right thickness of wrapper. Pan fried dumplings are also quite good with the usual crisp bottoms... pork and chicken options. Also enjoyed the Spicy Tofu Noodle and Spicy Cucumber cold appetizers. Clean, comfortable environment and friendly service.

My friend and I came here on a Thursday night to eat dinner. We had the whole place to ourselves. The table and chairs were stable. There were some spots in the restaurant that could be cleaned up, but maybe they had a rush before we came in . There's free parking out in the front. The staff were nice, but they did almost forgot one of our dishes. We had sweet-and-sour cucumber, which was a little bit spicy, oddly enough . The sauce beef pancake wrap, which had egg and lettuce in it, was good and this was actually my favorite of our dishes that we ordered. The chicken and mushroom dumpling pan fry was good too. I really like all the crispiness. There is a note that if you have something pan fry, it is a dollar extra. The beef and onion buns were decent. I think this would be a good place if you want to get your dumpling fix and you are near by in the area.

Back for more of the delicious dumplings and they were great! The Dan Dan noodles are really amazing with just the right balance of flavors. The wonton soup was really good with a nice broth. Popcorn chicken dipped in the chilli sauce is pretty amazing. I think the Dan Dan noodles might just be a go to item for us in the future. This is our hidden gem in Katy.

Went here for a family dinner, and the fact that my nephew loves dumplings. It is a small restaurant compared to everything else around the plaza. There are only a few tables inside the restaurant. Service overall was great. The waitress was nice and patient with us as we kept ordering multiple rounds of soup dumplings. The food was good. The family loved the soup dumplings and got multiple orders of them for everyone. The Dan Dan noodle had a more peanut sesame taste to it, but I just wish it had a bit more kick to it. The spicy dried tofu was unique; it comes out looking like noodles but has an overall decent flavor.

We finally found a good soup dumpling spot!! 10/20 recommend if you are craving them. We had some bomb ones in New York 2 years ago and we have been on the hunt since for something in Katy. The Dan Dan noodles and the beef noodles had so many different flavors it was fantastic. We will definitely be back! It is small and cozy inside and you can even see them making the food. Everything was really clean and came out pretty fast.

Located inside of the 99 Ranch Market (#1) along Mason, it had so much potential but struggled with foot traffic. As a result, it closed for good several weeks ago. With only a handful of tables, the setup was casual and completely unpretentious. The restaurant transitioned from over-the-counter ordering to a self service kiosk, a practice that has become commonplace amongst many Asian eateries. Prices were reasonable for the area, with plenty of options under $10. The menu featured a number of classics true to Shanghainese cuisine, including their stir fried udon (上海粗炒麵), scallion oil noodles (葱油拌面), min purse wontons (小馄饨), and even braised wheat gluten (烤麩). All of these items delivered in a big way, even their steamed dumplings (水餃) was silky and plump. Unfortunately two Shanghainese staples fell short: soup dumplings / XLB (小籠包) and pan fried buns / SJB (生煎包). The XLB was doughy, unstable, and the broth lacked depth. The SJB suffered from a similar doughy texture, with very little crisp at the bottom. These were not issues initially, but over time the decline in quality became noticeable. There is a part of me that hopes for a revival in a new location. While there is no shortage of soup dumplings in Houston, Shanghainese cuisine remains rare. ___________ (#1) 99 Ranch Market - Katy: https://www.yelp.com/biz/99-ranch-market-katy-2

The blend of bouncy, savory morsels amidst tender, saucy tofu was at once revolutionary and so obvious; why hadn't I yet seen this at any other restaurant? And sure, innards may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's important for you to know that none of my past orders from the 50+ item menu have ever failed me, whether enjoyed in the restaurant or at home. Maybe you'd prefer the aromatic, classic, perfectly balanced three-cup chicken? And if you're vegetarian, might you consider the punchy garlic eggplant or the wok-kissed string beans? I could go on. Do yourself a favor and come see for yourself, though I'd recommend parallel parking on the neighborhood streets behind the restaurant rather than the rocky parking lot, to save you some trouble. The pig snout has been slow-cooked so it is pretty tender yet chewable, and it tastes sorta like pork tongue or soft tendon; the cucumber adds a refreshing crisp and the garlic boosts the flavor! I DARE YOU to try this bizarre food! I really wanted to like Wanna Bao because the presentation of the food was beautiful, but overall,…read morethe taste just did not live up to the visuals for me. We came with a group of 18 people, and the bill ended up being around $972. Unfortunately, most of the dishes were more impressive visually than flavor-wise. The colorful green fried rice looked unique, but honestly just tasted like regular fried rice. The green beans were overcooked, so they lost the crunch and sweetness that usually make that dish enjoyable. The green curry was extremely spicy, but outside of the heat, it wasn't very memorable. The shaking beef dish looked amazing presentation-wise, but the sauce was too sweet for a savory dish, and the crispy rice pairing just didn't work well for me. I initially thought the duck dish was Peking duck, but it was actually the Jasmine Tea Smoked Duck. Even so, everyone at my table agreed we still preferred the traditional Peking duck style. The duck itself lacked flavor for us, and the skin was soft instead of having the crisp texture we were hoping for. The only dishes I genuinely enjoyed were the soup dumplings, cucumber salad, and fried dumplings. Most of the other dishes at the table were barely touched. If you're looking for colorful, aesthetically pleasing food and great presentation, you may enjoy this place. But if flavor is your main priority, this spot just wasn't for me personally.

Two foodies from Houston…read more We decided to try the Taste of China since we have seen the restaurant on our walks through the shopping center. The restaurant inside is not large but well laid out and clean. Staff is friendly and professional. They quickly greet and seat you. We ordered three dishes two were similar one had pork and the other had beef with jalapeños with a side of steamed white rice. The third dish was a soup like. The food was seasoned well and delicious. We will definitely be back. Give it a try for yourself. Happy eating!

THIS PLACE AUTOMATICALLY FACTORS IN 20% TIPS WHEN THEY SWIPE YOUR CARD…read more Party of 4 in early May. Ordered 6 plates and a soup--total $120 (but after their tip, came out to $150). We usually tip pretty well, so the amount was not an issue--but the fact that the staff who helped us TOLD us the pre-tip price is $126 and then REFUSED TO GIVE US the bill after we paid made us suspicious. After repeated badgering, we were finally handed the bill and saw the $150 price. We would have been fine if you told us the automatic tip for a party of our size or that there's an amount/dishes-cap for the automatic tip--but if we had not asked for our bill four/five times by different members of our party, then we would have accidentally left another cash tip on the table. The ONLY reason we kept asking for the bill in the first place is because we wanted to make sure that a dessert plate we ordered--which never arrived during the entire service--was not charged. Taste was authentic, portion sizes okay, and there was a good selection of food from different parts of China on the menu, but absolutely would NOT come back again due to this shady business practice.
