The quality here was okay under the previous ownership, not bad but not great. We hoped that the new ownership would improve the quality. We ordered extra food to get the free crab rangoon promo, but they called back and said they didn't have any rangoon and substituted 4 spring rolls (not the same value - should take the promo down if they're out of stock). The beef and broccoli was fine. The hunan vegetable chicken was decent. The egg rolls were standard, and potstickers were okay. The general tso's chicken was the driest I've ever had, despite being heavily sauced. That's not an exaggeration. It was a struggle to choke it down, and I gave up halfway through. It was like they had left it under a heat lamp all day before finally saucing it and boxing it up. Sadly, the quality has not improved under the news owners. We've given them several chances and have never been impressed, but the food was always decent - cooked properly, but just bland. This time, it was just plain bad. AVOID - clearly, the new ownership has cut every corner possible. We've eaten takeout from this location for 20-plus years, and WHATEVER THIS WAS was not the food we used to get. Do you like all of your Chinese food sweet? Well then, you will love this place. Crab Rangoon tasted like it was glazed like a donut. Special Fried rice is supposed to have and always did have a significant amount of protein. I counted two shrimp tails and a piece of chicken, pork, and beef, each about the size of a teaspoon. I mistakenly ordered from here, but when I went to pick it up at the other place, I found out my mistake. Since I had ordered it, and it was already made (I called them), I went to pick the order up and paid for it. It's been more than 30 years since I've ordered from here, and I remembered why. The service was fine, the food wasn't. The hot and sour soup was bland. The pork lo mein was so greasy I had to spread it out on paper towels and blot it before serving. I hate leaving bad reviews but I once again believe food is limited in this area. Very friendly staff with quick service but the beef and broccoli, Singapore noodles, and wonton soup were incredibly bland- no wontons for the soup either. The crab Rangoon was also bland and didn't have that rich, sweet crab/cream cheese flavor at all. My partner discarded the leftovers which I typically love to have, and I hate wasting food. I ordered from this place while I was staying at a nearby hotel. I ordered the lemon chicken, crab rangoons, and the beef pepper steak. The only thing that was edible was the beef pepper steak and the fried rice it came with. The lemon chicken was so hard on the inside that I could not chew through it. The fork couldn't even pierce it. There were only a few pieces that were edible and the rest went in the trash. The "crab" rangoons had no crab in them. They were completely filled with cream cheese and a speck of crab. These things were nasty and got thrown out too. I am hooked. Ok, maybe borderline obsessed is more accurate with the Special Fried Rice from Hunan Express. I have the best boyfriend, a St. Louis native, who brings me a large order whenever he visits home. Twice this year, I had an opportunity to visit St. Louis on my own, so I had to stop at Hunan. Like seriously, it has to happen or I am likely to regress to a two year old and have a tantrum. I'm horrible, I know, but I love it! I don't know if we just have terrible fried rice in Indianapolis, but I have never had anything like it. The shrimp, beef, pork...drooling just thinking about it. It's freaking delicious. The service is pretty good. Prices are reasonable. Surprisingly I've had other things here besides the rice. I'm a big fan of sweet and sour chicken, but not a fan of the chicken at Hunan. I was craving Chinese food and in West County, a friend of mine had just moved out there and didn't really know which places were good and which were terrible. With a little help from yelp, we decided to try this place out. Jennifer B. was totally spot on in her review. This is some of the best Chinese carry out I have had in this city. The food is fresh and not overly greasy. The crab rangoons were crispy and cream cheesy, and enjoyed by all who partook, and the veggie lo mein was some of the best I have had, not only in St. Louis but in other cities as well. The establishment was clean, the prices were competitive, and the people were working were incredibly friendly and quick to get our order to us when we arrived. I love their Lo Mein!!! It's not that ramen noodle crap with the weird white-ish sauce on it like at other places. We've ordered here a few times since moving here, and it's pretty legit. The orange chicken wasn't that great though - I think they mixed up our order. But like I said, the lo mein is a definite hit, as is the schezwan chicken. Just ordered from here for delivery. I ordered veggie lo mein , crab rangoons, and orange chicken. When I ordered over the phone they said 45 minutes. But it only took about 20 minutes which was a nice surprise !! Food was hot and fresh. I loved the lo mein it was packed with tons of veggies !! Hunan Express does the fast and inexpensive Chinese food better than just about anybody else. We ordered two boxes of chicken fried rice and an order each of crab rangoon and fried wontons the night before last. The food was ready fast, the order was correct, the staff was friendly and the food was delicious! Not to mention that the price is in line with everyone else. There is an older gentleman working here with a bunch of teenagers, with possibly more people in the back. I think that the older man does the cooking. Living in Ballwin, this is the best Chinese food around. My typical order is General Tso, Seasme Chicken, Rangoons, fried wontons. Seriously, just order. You won't go wrong. Other tip - sweet and sour chicken's sauce is on the side. Good for leftovers, however I preferred tossed. Friendly people, it's always clean, and the workers are super nice. Inconsistent. We won't be ordering again. We first ordered from Hunan Express maybe two months ago and the food was good - above average for Chinese take out in the Saint Louis area. Recalling a good experience, we ordered again tonight and boy did it miss the mark. I got the Kung pow shrimp - the same as I had gotten last time - but tonight it was flavorless. The veggies did not impress - white onions, green peppers, round water chestnuts and topped with peanuts - but the biggest disappointment was the sauce. Totally bland and lacking proper viscosity. There were a couple red chilis in the container but the they had zero impact on the dish and certainly didn't earn it the hot pepper (spicy) designation shown on the menu. My husband had the chicken in garlic sauce and was just as unimpressed as I was. The crab rangoon was average; nothing to write home about but more edible than both our main dishes. Unfortunately, I ordered us both the large sizes as we hoped to have leftovers for lunch tomorrow but it was not worth saving - our more than half-full containers went in the trash. Just had a terrible experience with this place. We stopped in to get a take out order. When we opened it at home the Qt. soup lid was half on and all the broth had spilled onto the remainder of the order in the bag. The brown bag was totally wet and falling apart--luckily there was a platic bag over it. However, the entire order was soggy as all the broth had gotten into the styrofoam square container near it and the boxed food below. The broth just dripped out of the styrofoam box when I picked it up as was the case with all else. I phoned the restaurant and spoke with a man (American, not Asian) and he immediately told me that it was our fault. That we were given an order that was fine and that he delivers and this happens all the time and that the order either must have tipped over because we didn't place it right in the car or we leaned on it. That's it. No "sorry, ma'am, don't know how..." Nothing like that at all. Just reiterated that it's our fault. Well, he just lost a customer. Last night we had ordered from New China in the valley and in spite of the bad weather, the owner dropped the entire order off and all was fine. Don't know who owns Hunan Express, but I doubt it's the rude man who answered the phone----when I told him he just lost a customer, he couldn't care less and told me to have a nice a day! Thanks to this man's reply to my call, we will NEVER give them our business again. There are plenty of other Asian restaurants in the area that have much better food and customer service. read more

We just moved to Wildwood from Chesterfield and were trying to figure out who delivered to us. We found this Hunan Express and gave it a try. Very good!!! So far I had their fried chicken wings, egg roll, egg drop soup, steamed dumplings and they were all excellent as was the chicken fried rice. Good portions. Next I will try the moo goo gai pan, (chicken and veggies in a nice sauce) which I usually get. My hubby loves General Tso's and always wants extra white rice and has always gotten it. Their crab rangoon is the savory type, not sweet, which I was SOOO happy to get!! I rather my crab rangoon not be sweet. Food is consistently great and they are always very friendly AND you can order online with a place to type special requests (TOTAL PLUS!! ) They will always be our first choice for Chinese as long as they keep up the great work! read more

Food and prices are decent and within range of other chinese restaurants in the area. Problem is they have huge turnover in employees which translates into a complete lack of customer service. On multiple occassions they have forgotten items in our carryout order and I've had to go back to the restaurant to pick them up. They don't even offer to deliver the missing items and act like they could care less that they forgot multiple items in the order. The same or better food can be found within a mile or two, but with much better customer service. read more
