Our family orders from this restaurant a lot! Normally it's great. One might though the food we picked up was markedly unlike their normal and very untastey. We called and they offered to replace this god on our next order which was fine (the restaurant is 30 minutes away from us). When we called to place our next order we were scolded and basically told they never have an off day, we were being unreasonable and taking advantage of them. Seriously???? After all our ordering and never having a problem the one time we reported that the food wasn't right we get treated like we're lying and stealing from them?? We were told that there will "not be a next time" that they fix a problem after TAKE OUT has left the restaurant. So no quality control, no humility, blame shifting, rudeness and no recourse if something isn't made properly. That isn't customer service and it's not right!! Havent yet tried the dine-in experience. But take out has been a success. Orange chicken, fried rice, shrimp w/ garlic sauce, lo mein and donuts. Delicious. Thank you for a tasty dinner i didnt have to worry about cooking myself. Staff greeted me when i walked in and quickly came over to assist me with my to-go order. Chop sticks upon request. and they included plenty of soy sauce packets and 4 fortune cookies. Inside appeared clean. there were several tables full of diners enjoying their meals. Extra parking in back. they are closed on Tuesdays i believe. Hunan Chinese food is the best. They have some really delicious "Chef Specialties" like Walnut Shrimp, which is shrimp with mixed vegetables (Chinese style) in sauce with candied walnuts. Scallops and Shrimp in Garlic Sauce is very good too. The only thing they don't get right is Moo Shoo Pork which for some reason they only serve it with "pancakes" or rice, not both. Every Chinese restaurant I've ever eaten at serves both. If you ask for the pancakes they charge extra, even though the menu says "with pancakes" and all entrees say served with white rice. read more

Everytime I have eaten here the food is excellent, always comes out of the kitchen hot and fast, this is the best chinese food I have ever had. The place is kind of out of the way, so it is not always busy, you can get a seat anytime they are open, with no wait. The atmosphere is very welcoming and also very clean. I noticed they do have delivery for the Excelsior Springs, MO area and the delivery driver is out the door as soon as she comes in. The only problem I have is the waitstaff. There are is one waitress who is always rude. I could see if a person is having a bad day, but she is always this way, plus she smells like a walking cigarette. Personally I love Chinese food therefore going to any Chinese place I expect good food however with Hunans that was not the result. My friend Sammy and I are currently working on a project for our marketing class in which we had to make a scorecard and go into a business to grade them on their service. We went in there on August 31, which was a Monday, as soon as they opened. It was around 11:05 when we went in and at first it seemed great. There was no one there therefore we knew that we should get our food in a reasonable amount of time. The lady working the front desk was very nice and got us seated quickly. After she got us to our table she handed us the menu in which I expected there to be a lot more of, however there was one side and it did not have much to it. She asked what we wanted to drink however there were no drinks on the menu you almost had to guess what they had to drink. I asked for Sprite and Sammy asked for water in which she brought to us almost immediately. While we were looking at the menu she stood at the table waiting for us to decide which I thought was a little odd. She eventually left and we continued to look through. There were no options for desserts or sides. All meals come with the same sides of fried rice, crab ran goon, an egg-roll, and a choice of soup. While we were ordering it was very difficult to talk with her she spoke extremely quietly and did not know how to answer our questions which was frustrating. She brought out the soup within a couple of minutes which I personally was not fond of and shortly after that she brought out our food. I ordered orange chicken which had came with the fried rice, an egg roll, and crab ran goon. The rice was extremely bland and the egg roll was super crunchy and had a ton of cabbage in it. While we were eating she continuously walked by us watching us eat as if she was irritated at how long we were taking. We finished eating and then took an overall look at this place. The inside was very clean but then I thought to go check out the bathroom. I walked inside and the first thing I smelled was bleach. They kept their cleaning supplies in the bathroom although it was not clean. The bathroom was covered in rust and mildew. The tile on the floor was all broken up as well. I went back to the table and went online to do some research. A majority of their meals cost around $8. Our total came out to be $20 in which I didn't think was too bad. They do not have social media but they have a website where you can see what they have which I can see why this is what they are known for; delivery and speed. They get you your food very fast. Price wasn't too bad very average however at night according to other people who have gone it gets very pricey with most of the same food. All together it wasn't terrible but I personally would not go there again. read more

I'm so sad to have to write this, but it must be said. This used to be my family's favorite chinese restaurant. When this location had a fire, we would drive all the way up to Cameron to go to the other location (which we didn't like as much but was still very good.) It's now under new management, and is going downhill very quickly. I just tried eating my cold leftover (because chinese is always awesome cold, amiright?) and it's terrible. Salty and not the sweet-spicy General Tso of days gone by... all the other entrées ordered that night were subpar, save the pork fried rice. We left our favorite waitress a bigger than normal tip. I said "for Christmas?" jokingly... But in reality we may not be back before then. So sad. So so sad. :( read more

Good fresh food, kind of similar to Bo Lings. (Actually the cook and the original owners got their start at Bo Lings). Not the best place if you're an authentic Chinese food snob; they do have to cater to the local clientele, which is not diverse. Still far and away the best chinese food in town. I like the moogoogaipan, also the szechuan chicken is good, I ask for them to make it extra spicy. Hot and sour soup and dumplings are as good as you'll get in NY or San Francisco. Although ownership has changed the original cook is still there. Unfortunately so is a server who has a long history of being difficult and inappropriate with the guests. They must keep her because they need someone thick-skinned to deal with the more clueless people who wander in. They offer takeout, the eating area is quiet and has no TV. read more

Tonight I thought I would branch out from the fast food in this town. When I entered the unassuming building the interior was simple but bright and clean. I told my server this was my first visit. She didn't offer a smile for the duration of my time there but did inquire if I lived here (really not her business but this us a small town). I explained that I did not but worked locally. Later, I ordered the dinner cashew chicken. She asked if I wanted white or fried rice with my dinner (a standard question at most Asian restaurants I have visited in life). I chose fried and she did not inform me of an additional charge even though she already knew my background - hello, new customer!!! The food came quickly, there were many types of vegetables and the portion size was good .... with the exception of that up-charged rice!!! The main dish was WAY to salty for my taste. I actually added some of the sweet table sauce to counter balance it. Like other reviewers stated, the up-charged rice was on the greasy side, and so I didn't even enjoy it! When asked if everything was satisfactory at checkout, I mentioned the up charge being a surprise but there was no offer to make it right. My bill was much to expensive for such sub par food quality and service. I actually threw away my leftovers and won't be back. I hope Excelsior has better to offer going forward. I've never eaten inside of Hunan, but their delivery service is AMAZING. Order your food, and it's literally at your place, in your hands, in less than 20 minutes. Pricey (not over-priced, just pricey), but the portions are huge. if you don't want leftovers, two people can definatly split one entre. 2x General Tso's chicken, 2x fried rice, 6 crab rangoon, large egg drop soup = about $45 + tip. Employees seem decent. Always cheery on the phone, but definatly quick and to the point when they bring your food. Not bad, I just like a smile every now and then! read more

Hunan Restaurant is one of the few sit down restaurants in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. Although there are three Chinese restaurants in Excelsior Springs, Hunan is the only one that actually serves some good Chinese food. It's located on the northeast side of Excelsior Springs and has an Asia building style to represent a Chinese place. When you walk in the west door you pretty see the dining part of the restaurant. There is a wall that splits the restaurant and everyone eats on the side that you walk in. The atmosphere is pretty nice for a little place. The Chinese art on the walls are nice and give the place some good design. Fine little pieces about 10x8 or a little larger hung on the walls of the Chinese restaurant. Quiet Chinese music slowly plays so it feels like you're eating Chinese food peacefully and feel welcome at that place. The tables and booths aren't anything special but do just fine. Hunan is one of the places I enjoy eating at in Excelsior, but the most recent experience I had was not the best. I went on Valentine's Day which was a Friday night so I anticipated the place to be busy, and it was. It was good to see that the restaurant was filled, but it was like it was too much for the Hunan employees to handle that night. My server seemed lost and flustered at moments. The menu was dull but was easy to read. It was a little red star next to the items that indicated that they were spicy, had the title (which was usually an Asia name) and explained what it was directly below it. I ordered a Coca-Cola, egg drop soup, and General Tao's Chicken. My father was with me and he ordered water, egg drop soup, and a dish of steamed dumplings. My father got his food within 10 minutes time and I still haven't got mine. The lost server comes back 5 minutes later and says, 'They are making your food, you'll get to eat tonight, not sure what you'll eat but you'll get fed." At first that threw me for a loop because it wasn't so much a joking matter considering my father was 3/4 of the way done with his meal. Then my server comes back with my plate 8 minutes later and says, "Here we are, a teenager like you is probably starved." I replied back, "How do you know I'm a teenager?" She said, "Well you look about 15." And I'm 18 so I ended the conversation at that. Despite the long wait the food I had ordered was very good. The soup tasted just right and was very warm which hit the spot on a cold night. The General Tao's Chicken I ordered was well decorated on to the plate and had a sensational taste. The chicken was glazed with a thick spicy Asian sauce which had just enough spice to give it flavor but not too much to make your mouth feel on fire. The chicken had a coating around it and had a very nice crunch to it. I ate as much as I could and still had several pieces of chicken left to take home so I was very pleased with how much you are served. The next day I had the chicken and it tasted just as good as the night before. Overall I liked eating at Hunan, but with it being a busy night the service could be better. read more
