I have lived in the area since 1957 and have never eaten at Hulls. I have bought Chilean Sea bass there and took it home and prepared it myself. Very expensive, but I knew it would be and it was worth every penny. However! I went there on a rare day off when my wife had to work and took the opportunity to try it out. I went there to get some broiled Chilean Sea bass, but they didn't have it that day, but did offer deep sea Bass. I ordered the platter "Broiled with butter and garlic only" Baby limas and cole slaw sides. First the fish did not look like the sea bass I saw in the fish market next door, which was about an inch thick. The fish I was served was a half inch thick in two peices. The cook put some kind of spicy seasoning on it which tasted like a light coating of blackening seasoning, which I do not like. The was not tender or flakey like Sea Bass is and it didn;t have the sweet taste of Sea Bass. I would hate to accuse them of switching fish on me, but I swear it tasted and had the consistancy of Talapia. I will give them the benefit of the doubt, as they do have a very good reputation. As a matter of fact my wife and I were regulars at Billy's. Monk the owner always came to visit with us every friday night and he said his seafood was so good because it came directly from Hulls. It could be I was unlucky enought to get some edge peices which were thinner than normal and it was slightly overcooked. It doesn't excuse them putting seasoning on my fish when I distinctly requested butter only with a little garlic. The limas were cooked from scratch not canned, but were undercooked and not tender, but were al dente, which is good for pasta, not beans. They were grainy and starchy. I love green limas and couldn't eat them. The slaw was good and also the hush puppies. Overall I was really disappointed. I drove all the way from S. Daytona just to eat my first fish meal there, and was not happy. I can't say I will go there again. If the price wasn't so high, I might have given them another chance, but my meal was $20 not including tip. I can think of several nice upscale restaurants I could have eaten at and had better service, better atmosphere and certainly better fish. I don't care about the atmosphere, or the fishy smell because of the close location to the fish market next door and I don't even care it was not full service. If the fish had been what I expected, I would have been happy with all of it including the price. I hope it was just a bad day, or a new cook or some explanation. I like the fact they have been around for so long and want them to continue. But just trying to be real! read more
