Luckily, they have a tuck shop downstairs, so we were able to buy some British cookies to tide us over before our shashuka and English breakfast came. I'm only docking one star because the baguette slices that came with the shakshuka weren't enough to get all of that super delicious tomato sauce! I had a pretty positive experience for brunch here a while back, all the staff were super pleasant. i will say, not the most attentive, but that's pretty standard for a busy weekend brunch in Toronto. I didn't love the food, but the ambiance left me with a good impression! I came back recently just for some drinks and snacks with family. We sat down and just realized it wasn't the vibe we wanted and decided to head out - i know this isn't the most polite thing to do, but if i'm spending an hour or so somewhere, I want to feel comfortable. At no fault of the restaurant, because it was midafternoon on a weekday, the two other tables were both solo guests which isn't ideal because we'd be the only ones talking. Just my prerogative. We apologised, but the server basically demanded an explanation, which we obviously couldn't give without insulting the other patrons. I understand requesting feedback, but it really felt like an interrogation. I wasn't going to write a review, but after seeing that the business owners respond to negative reviews with paragraphs upon paragraphs of rebuttal, I think they should cool it a bit on challenging negative experiences... even if you know they're in the wrong, publicly disputing them doesn't make you look good. Had the server not done that before we left, I definitely would have been back, but now I've written it off. read more

I celebrated my milestone birthday at Hugs & Sarcasm Restaurant and it was a great time and our first time there. I absolutely loved their full English Style Breakfast! It's called the Proper Fry Up and it was so delicious and filling! 2 eggs, strip bacon, sausage, tomato, mushrooms, baked beans, fried bread, black and white pudding & home fries. My friend enjoyed their Veggie Fry Up: 2 eggs, roasted tomato, chickpea smash, mushrooms, baked beans, toast & home fries The ambiance of the back deck was so cozy and so sunny too. Big thanks to Olivia for the excellent service! She also surprised us with this little birthday treat made with Jaffa Cakes from UK. Walked in for brunch this weekend. There are 2 floors and we were able to grab a table upstairs. I think there were only 2 servers working so service was a bit slow and a couple requests that were missed but I feel for them with how busy it was! I tried the veggie fry up and it was really good. They offered ketchup and hot sauce but the hot sauce only had a tiny bit left. My friend anticipated needing salt but after trying her food she was pleased with the seasoning and didn't need it. Overall, their menu had a ton of options and some distinctly English drinks and meals. It was very nice. My only qualm was the service being slow but again, they seemed understaffed. read more

Clever name. Queen West attitude. Average brunch. Under the category of "I shouldn't have ordered that", there is something unsettling about eating an omelette with pieces of chicken in it. It was the special that I ordered without much thought and ended up playing with my head...I mean, that's so meta, but in a gruesome kind of way. H Bar is a tiny little spot just a stone's throw from Trinity Bellwoods Park, and one of the only places on bougie Queen West to grab some cheap and cheerful pub grub. I've been here a few times over the years for a quick after-work drink or to pick up lunch on Ritual, but last weekend I came and sat in to eat. My friends and I were freezing cold after skating on the Bentway and craving a glass of wine and some carbs! The place was pretty dead for a Sunday afternoon, but we were glad to get the bench seat in the window -- a prime location for people watching. As 3 vegetarians looking for pub food, we knew it was a tall order, but were glad to see that H Bar had a number of options for us, including jackfruit tacos, cauliflower fritters, and a veggie burger. We went with the cauliflower fritters, nachos with jackfruit on top (instead of chicken or beef, which were other options), and fries. Everything was delicious and the service was great. H-Bar isn't fancy, but sometimes that's exactly what you need, and I appreciated them knowing that sometimes vegetarians crave junk too! ;) read more

Great little spot! We were walking along Queen West, desperately looking for some shade, a drink and a quick bite. Also complicating matters, we had a tiny dog in tow that would have to either be on the patio with us or tied within arm's reach. Enter, H Bar's tiny 4-seater patio. Apparently there is a back patio too but with the front, we had no dog issues! The back patio may be licensed soon as well, hot tip. Tried the deep fried pickles and spinach dip and I was really impressed! The picked were perfect little coins, like chips, in a yummy ranch dip to cool it all down. The snack menu is not too big, but had all the favourites. I also came here once for a birthday party! The birthday girl was able to rent out the whole top floor and it was perfectly suited for everyone. Centrally locations, not too expensive drinks, space upstairs and downstairs. Woohoo, a place that has a proper English breakfast! Ordering was easy, friendly service, they do their own delivery and have a cute British tuck shop inside. Also loads of gluten free options. Also comes with fried bread, which is a weird English thing that maybe I'm not too crazy about but am glad I tried?! DECEPTIVE menu. It says "BOTTOMLESS MIMOSA THROUGHOUT BRUNCH"! but they charge you $38 for the Mimosa's! We were shocked by the huge bill at the end of our otherwise good meal. When we brought it up with the waiter and the owner, there was NO REACTION from the owner although the waiter was apologetic. They need to put the price on the menu. It is misleading to make people think MIMOSAs are free and bottomless. We will not be returning. Also, service was very slow although the waiter was apologetic and we still tipped him. read more

Ordered the omelette of the day - noticed it had marble cheese inside of it - the kind you get at the grocery store. The meal was pretty basic. The coffee was sour and sad. Basic food that deserves 2 stars out of 5. The main reason I'm writing this review is the poor service. We were waited on by a large woman, red curly hair, dressed up for halloween. She kept coming to the table asking us if we had selected our drinks or food, despite letting her know we were still waiting for some other friends. She never had a smile on her face and treated us like we were a nuisance and was looking down on us. At the end of the meal, she started whining and yelling at some of us for tipping less than 10% - basically she was having a tantrum for losing out on $1. This made our group end our brunch on a sour note - a brunch we had planned for over a month ago to celebrate one of us finishing grad school. What a shame. Due to this terrible service, I have no choice but to rate this place a 1 star. read more

This place came highly recommended by a guy who is a regular. He brought us here for food and drinks. He promised that the food was incredible, the service was quick and friendly, the atmosphere was fun, the beers were unique! All of this may have been more true if I had gotten super drunk like the majority of our party. But some of us have work every day and not just on weekdays. Beers were average. I got a Canadian lager that tasted just like Blue Moon. My buddy and I were nonplussed. We got fries to share and the maple aioli that comes with them is awful. Overly sweet for a savory food. I asked for ranch and that was also homemade: watery with too much dill. I then asked for ketchup. I do not like ketchup. Everybody got sliders. "Best sliders in Toronto," the guy says twenty times as we peruse the menu. Okay, I got three different types. It took over 45 minutes to get them. I know because I timed it. And I was starving. So I was hungry and mean. The sliders are okay flavor-wise, but have way too much bread. I already forgot the kind I ordered because they were forgettable. The fries are okay. And I've already explained why the dipping sauces are lacking. To be fair, the server was very friendly. And that's why this isn't one star. read more

We ordered from H Bar through JustEat for delivery after reading and hearing great things about the restaurant. I got the fried cauliflower and my partner and friend each got an assortment of sliders. After a very long wait for the food it arrived cold and soggy. The cauliflower was complete mush and tasted like the fryer oil hadn't been changed in quite a while. The sliders, despite being an assortment, all tasted the same and were burnt. The menu options sounded wonderful, but none of the items we ordered seemed to be made with any care. We ended up throwing everything in the garbage after a few bites. I called to ask for a refund and spoke with one of the owners. She was very polite and open to hearing the criticism, she assured us that we would be fully refunded for the order. It has now been almost three weeks with no follow up or refund. I am as disappointed in their customer service as I was with their meal. read more

Great local bar with superb food, and wonderful service. I searched along Queen st. for a sports bar to watch with Raptors game while having a quick bite and a drink. There is a $15 burger + beer special for Raptors games (and another special for Leafs games, and one for NFL games, so most of your major sports games are covered here). The server noticed I was watching the Raps game on one of their 2 decently-sized screens without sound, so she considerately asked me if I wanted to change the sound system from background music to the game - and of course I said yes. The I ordered the burger + beer special, and added the BBQ trimmings which included excellent BBQ sauce and caramelized onions, which was an extra $2. I opted for a side garden salad (instead of fries), which had a good variety of greens, and came with a balsamic vinaigrette which was thankfully not overwhelming. The burger came out perfectly charred on the outside, and tender on the inside - the charred flavour is key! The poppy seed bun was was fresh and nicely dense. The server summarized the beers on tap very well, and I went for a local selection, which was lightly hoppy and easy going. Overall a pleasant surprise along crowded Queen West, with good food,and a great option to watch the game with a solid meal. read more

Stopped by tonight on New Year's night and everything was amazing. Service is still amazing by the regular staff, they always make conversation and constantly check up on you. We got some sliders and a few drinks, the food never lets us down. The Raptors game was also being played on the big screen. We noticed this time there are some board games for us to play and that is a fun touch!! It made our night even more lovely. We also stopped by a few months ago for free Bar Trivia which they host every Tuesday night. It was a great experience and a live crowd. Full of laughter and jokes. They sometimes have themes like Doctor Who, Orange Is The New Black and Stranger Things. They do take reservations, so I suggest calling in advance to book a table!! read more

this place hosted my friend's fundraising event and the upstairs space was big enough for the people that turned out, ~30. we went on a thursday so they had their special 2oz for $6 on bar rails and it was amazing! the drinks were not watered down and really effective and friendly service by Melissa. she's wonderfully welcoming and a hugger. i also got medium-sized wings and tried their fries and deep fried cauliflowers. we got hot honey and dry rub for the wing flavours and they were full of flavours! i was a bit disappointed in the size of the wings themselves...very small! i have nothing bad to say about the cauliflower...done to perfection! i didn't check out the music downsrairs but they had live music. would recommend this place for a group or just a small gathering read more

A few of my friends had a joint birthday on the 2nd floor of H bar. The staff were so attentive, so accommodating, and so much fun! The drinks were awesome and a great price, and while I didn't have anything to eat, a few other guests at the party did, and they said the food was great. We thought it would be a great idea to pick up a picnic basket of their gold package before our date at Trinity Bellwoods one night. The basket was cute but the contents inside were not. The roast beef had so much fat on it that only 1/8 of the portion they gave us was actually edible. The "selection of meat" consisted of that fatty roast beef that my 4-year-old daughter could have made better and chicken that was dry AF (there was only enough chicken to make one sandwich btw). The bread was rock hard. They were "out" of potato salad and did not bother making more, forcing us to change to a boring garden salad. Their "selection of cheeses" consisted of goat cheese and cheap mozzarella (who likes goat cheese anyway?) Oh and they were also "out" of the donuts and the replacement sounded so bad we opted out. Overall a great idea, but a terrible execution. I highly DO NOT recommend this place for their picnic baskets. You're better off to go to Loblaws and get your own fresh and delicious ingredients for half the price. The gold package should instead be called the charcoal package, just sayin'. read more
