Earls Kitchen + Bar is one of my favourite Canadian chain restaurants for a reason - it never disappoints; everything is always on point and satisfying (from the food and service to ambiance). The menu has something for everyone, and they do every dish really well (taste, quality, portion size, fresh ingredients, balance of flavours). Service is always very friendly, helpful, and efficient,l. This Sherway Gardens location was no exception. We got there during a busy weekend afternoon, and we were told our table would be ready in 10 minutes. While waiting, we got complimentary drinks (choice of mimosa, guava juice, or water). No other restaurant serves glasses of free mimosa while waiting for a table! The wait wasn't even that long.
I liked the open kitchen in this restaurant, where we could see the chefs cooking. It looked like they had the logistics pinned down very well, as every ready-to-serve dish was picked up very quickly by the servers.
Every Earls location seems to have greeneries - pots of plants and decorations (both inside and outside of the restaurant) that makes you feel you're eating in some sort of garden-like environment. There are a full bar, regular dining area, and patio for warmer months.
Their menu changes from time to time, and they always introduce new items and have a "Featured Items" section in their menu, but the categories usually remain the same (they always have mains, salad and noodle bowls, burgers, pizza, plant-based options, desserts). They have a small brunch menu that's served on weekends and holidays until 2 pm, but they serve the regular lunch & dinner menu all day long.
Dishes that we tried this time around:
1) Oysters on the Half Shell (half dozen) (comes with mignonette, horseradish, and lemon) - Very small compared to most other raw oysters I've had in other restaurants. It was okay though, as seafood wasn't their main focus here (although they do serve very good other seafood dishes - see below).
2) Sesame Citrus Noodle Bowl (chilled ube noodles, Asian pear slices, fresh herbed greens, crushed peanuts, crispy onions, citrus chili dressing) + Ahi Tuna - Very refreshing, herbaceous, and healthy-tasting. This was perfect for hot summer days (or any day, really). The chilled ube noodles reminded me of a cross between the Korean potato / glass noodles (with the slippery feel) and Japanese shirataki noodles (translucent noodles made of konjac roots - light and low in calories). These ones were made from ube, so they had a light purple hue. The slippery noodles mixed really well with the herbed greens, while the crushed peanuts, crispy onions, and Asian pear slices added a nice crunch and balance of textures. You get to choose to add a protein such as tofu, chicken, or ahi tuna.
3) Cajun Blackened Oven-Roasted Salmon (with seasonal vegetables - broccolini and steamed jasmine rice) - The salmon size was pretty big, and the cajun spices had a bit of a kick (but not overly spicy). It was served on a bed of jasmine rice (which was flavourful with the addition of scallion and crispy onion) and seasonal vegetables (broccolini this time). We asked for extra vegetables and they were able to make that addition for us.
4) Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes + Greens (caper remoulade, prawns, fennel salad, garden greens, lemon vinaigrette) - BEST DISH IN THE HOUSE, in my opinion. One of the best crab cakes I've had. Unlike other crab cakes that contained a lot of filler (to hold the crab cake together), this one was a little crumbly but it was mostly pure lumps of crab meat and prawns, corn, scallion, and other fresh ingredients. The top and bottom were nice and crispy, while the inside was pure heaven (soft, lots of real crab chunks and prawns, and very tasty). It went really well with the side green salad. You can get the crab cakes as an appetizer, main (you get the salad with the main), or add-on to another dish. read more
