Spaghetti portofino
Thomas S.

Items ordered Appetizer: Creole crab + spinach dip Mains: 1. Rob's crispy chicken sandwich with truffle fries 2. Spaghetti portofino To start off I went to Cactus Club on a Saturday night around 8:20pm and it was packed inside. They only had bar seating available so I opted for that to get seated ASAP. I don't typically like crab or seafood, but I really enjoyed the creole crab and spinach. It didn't taste fishy, but I must admit it was very creamy and cheesy. As a frequent at Cactus Club, I usually go for the Rob's crispy chicken sandwich with truffle fries, but I was able to get a taste of the spaghetti Portofino and actually enjoyed that more than my meal. The spaghetti was creamy and flavourful and I'm glad it wasn't a dry butter sauce. This was a solid meal and a great location. I highly recommend the crab dip and spaghetti!

Red Curry with Chicken ($24.25): tasty!

=== 1. VERDICT/VALUE No matter where you are in Canada, the Cactus Club is a pretty solid choice for food and atmosphere: the food is decent, as are the wait staff, music, and TVs (especially hockey games)! === 2. FOOD During this particular visit, I had the: - Prawn Crunch Roll ($20) which is decent for one person or easily shared between 2-3 people with its 8 pieces. - Red Curry with Chicken ($24.25): pretty chunky and flavourful, maybe not as authentic as one would like, but still good. === 3. SERVICE Tinna served us and she was happy, professional, and constantly coming around to assist / refill drinks. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's abuzz with activity: sound is coming at you from the music on the speakers, visuals from the TVs, or the din of the packed house of people and wait staff all around you. Wheelchairs and strollers would do better in the traditional-height tables. Parking is plentiful at the mall parking lot.

We came here because everyone always talks about cactus club. We went during the holiday season, so the place itself was very busy. We had a reservation so there wasn't really a long wait. The food took forever to come out, typically the apps come out pretty fast. But nope, not at this place. The server rarely stop by to take our orders for mains. We had to flag them down when we can. My tuna poke bowl was extremely disappointing. It was mostly filled with lettuce (very usually in a poke bowl). There was barely any tuna in it. The environment itself it's really dark, it was a struggle to see what we were eating.

Could someone please explain why there never is Kopparepare (Marlborough New Zealand) ® SAUVIGNON BLANC!!! white wine ever. If you never can get it. Why is it on the menu?? At least you would have consistency with Kim Crawford. It's been 3 years now we go for 1/2 price wine bottles and never available . I would appreciate when it's available for an another let down. My friend has had medical issues and it's the only wine she can drink . Are you ever seeing the representative again? Or did they ghost you ? Please let us know when it's available. Thanks

We'd been talking about checking out the Cactus Club Cafe for ages, so when it came time to book a restaurant for a night out, the place seemed like a logical choice. We arrived right on time for our 6:00 reservation and the place was packed. We were soon shown to a nice booth in the middle of the restaurant. (I do love me a nice booth.) (I should add that the ambiance, though very nice, isn't exactly conducive to a romantic, date-night feel. The place feels like an after work type joint, which is fine but not quite what we were looking for.) For our appetizer, we decided to try the Tuna Stack ("ocean wise ahi, citrus tamari vinaigrette, nori, sesame, avocado, microgreens, wonton crisps"). This is one delicious concoction. The presentation is really impressive, and it tastes just as good as it looks. There are plenty of really interesting flavors going on, and it's the e type of thing where you discover something new with every bite. We were about halfway through that dish when our mains showed up, which I found rather amateurish and annoying. It really contributed to the vibe that the staff was trying to rush us out of there so they could turn over the table quicker. Anyway, for my main I went with the Steak Frites ("8oz CAB sirloin, kale salad, horseradish cream, sea salted fries"). This is pretty much a perfect version of the venerable dish, as the steak was cooked perfectly and was full of flavor. (It was also the most tender steak I can remember eating in recent history.) The fresh, tasty fries and surprisingly delicious salad complemented the steak really well, too. Finally, we decided to share the London Fog Crème Brûlée ("blueberries, brown sugar, vanilla"). It sure looked appetizing when it arrived to the table, but my first bite told me something had gone awry in the preparation stage. The flavor is nice but there's an underlying saltiness that I found really unpleasant and off-putting. I ate a couple of bites and threw in the towel. It was an unfortunate ending to an otherwise delicious meal. I'm not sure if we would ever head back to Cactus Club Cafe on a date night, but if I was in the mood for something a little more boisterous and rowdy, I think the place would be a good option. (And I might totally have to go back for that awe-inspiring steak.)

Avocado dip
Neha D.

Hear me out, I hate tofu but this was soy- chilli tofu and it was SOOO yummy! The bowl was so incredibly refreshing and filling- I highly recommend for my vegetarians out there. Also got the avocado dip which was awesome! Not as thick as I usually like it but still really yummy! Cactus always tends to be pricey but honestly food is usually worth it! If you're on a budget, skip out on the drinks as they are quite pricey! Service and ambiance are pretty great- as always!

If you are reading this review it means you are trying to decide if you should eat here. Trust me, you do! This location is attached to the mall, parking right out front. The food was so fresh and tasty. It felt very light and refreshing, "clean eating" the way it should be at a restaurant. Definitely check this place out. Minutes away from downtown Toronto if you need a bite before heading into the fray.

Mini burgers, and truffle fries hiding behind an 8oz Malbec.

We called in for lunch to celebrate my wife's birthday. A short wait and we were shown to our table. The staff were excellent and Carmen B, our server was exemplary. The timing was perfect as was the food. This is a great place for dining with enough space between tables to ensure some privacy. Furnishings and decor are contemporary but not flashy. We had a light lunch with Prawn Crunch Roll and an order of mini burgers with a shared side of truffle fries. A glass of Malbec and a Caesar were our drinks of choice. As it was my wife's birthday she was treated to a generous slice of raspberry cheesecake. I thoroughly recommend this place. Lots of parking, accessible and clean washrooms as well.

There are also nightly and weekend happy hours, but we came here after work. - The white sangria is awesome! My former manager reached out to me about a few work-related questions. It was nice hearing from him. It's my usual self to ask if he'd like to go out for a meal. He was game with either the two of us, or past and current writers. I went with the latter, as it would be nice to have a happier meetup than what we did in November when he was let go. I hadn't been to Earls in a long time. I was a fan of this western Canadian chain when I lived in Winnipeg. Back then. it wasn't as upscale as it seems to be these days. The food was yummy and I liked dropping by. I asked him if he was good with this Earls across from CF Sherway Gardens. He was. There were a total of four folks who said yes. Another colleague said that he'd drop by to say hi. I didn't account for him in the reservation, as he'd be there briefly. I reserved online through OpenTable. It was party of four for 4:30 pm. It was great getting the occasional text message to confirm that we were still good to be here on a Wednesday at 4:30 pm. I was the first to make it here. I had no problem finding a parking spot and backed into an available one. I walked into the eatery. I was greeted by a friendly woman. I said that I had a reservation for four under my name. She found me and led me me to a booth. I looked at the happy hour menu. Red and white sangria were available. I went with the latter. It had peaches and oranges in it. It was delightful. We got water with ice. I waited for my friends and colleagues to arrive. Two of my friends had arrived, followed by the hi-and-bye friend. Two of them looked at my white sangria and order the same thing. Our other friend got a Moscow mule. My former manager texted me. He said that he was stuck in traffic on the 401 and he'd be late. I said that we'd be here. He eventually made it. Yay! He saw that most of us had sangria. He ordered the red sangria. Alcohol does hit him fast. Luckily, we were here for a few hours, so it eventually wore off. Even our server asked if he was okay, which was kind. Service was great. Our female server was attentive, making sure that our water was refilled and we were good. The manager came over and was looking for me. He said that to thank me for my "loyalty," he wanted to give us a complimentary Nashville crispy chicken and pickle skewers. I said that I wouldn't say no to free food! This appetizer was excellent. The pickle was a bit spicy. The crispy chicken was tender and not spicy. It was such a nice gesture. Our table got these items: - Baja taco (me) - Szechuan shrimp and pork dumplings (me) - Aburi salmon sushi press - Clam chowder - Bigger better burger with fries - Truffle tortellini I loved my baja taco. The fish was generous and flaky. It had a light, crispy batter. It was delicious. The szechwan shrimp and pork dumplings were excellent. The chili sauce had a ton of flavour. My former manager's aburi salmon sushi press needed more flavour. This place doesn't have wasabi. Instead, I said to dip his sushi in the szechwan sauce. He did and said it was much improved. I got to try a bit of his sushi and I also dipped it in the sauce. Yummy! My friends loved their meals. Everything was off the happy hour menu, except for the truffle tortellini that looked amazing. For dessert, we got these items: - Lemon meringue pie - Sticky toffee chocolate pudding with vanilla ice cream Our friend had left, so we were a table of four. We devoured both desserts in five minutes. It was quite the feat to witness! The lemon meringue pie is seasonal. It should be on the menu all the time. It was fantastic. The lemon had the perfect tartness. The meringue was light and perfect. The sticky toffee chocolate pudding was moist and decadent. We loved the vanilla ice cream and the crispy wafer. Since I'm the fruit person, I had all the sliced strawberries. So good! We got separate bills. I paid with a credit card at the table. I tipped and tapped. Done! A few of us used the washroom before we left. The women's was clean and inviting. No complaints! My former manager was waiting outside. He noticed that my car was still there. It felt like old times chatting for a bit before heading our separate ways. The food and drink were excellent at this eatery. The company was perfect. Service was wonderful. I'd return here for more good eats and drinks. (147)

Brought a small group here expecting the same amazing food we usually have here…read more Service was great. Both appetizers (crispy tofu and spinach dip) were great. The kale and mushroom pizza that I had just a few months ago, has changed. Now, it's overcome by a thick layer of cheese, while the scant sprinkle of mushrooms and kale had zero flavour, and the usually amazing crust was dry and too hard to eat. The Nashville chicken sandwich was ho-hum at best. Over-fried, not much flavour and no sign of the promised Nashville spice. Sad to see the tofu tacos have left the menu, and hoping Earls can get back to consistently good food. Tip: Order the crispy tofu appetizer as your main. Best plant-based item on the menu. Our whole group (omnivores and herbivores) devoured these!

Overall, they have great portions and value for their food and the interior feels very private and intimate. We were here as a party of 4 and were truly stuffed and needed to take home quite a bit of food. The apps and starters can all be shared as the portions are quite large and heavy. Everything has extra cheese, cream, and/or oil added. Ordering was quick and the first course came out around 10 mins after ordering and the mains about 30 mins or so. - bread and butter as well as water is available at the start of the meal - the seafood chowder (fish) was super rich and creamy, it was the highlight of the meal, sharing one is enough for 4 (we had two and with the rest of the meal was too much) - the italian salad was refreshing, but also heavy with dressing, one was good to share - the poseiden calamari was super fresh and crispy, a great app and again sharing one is enough (we ordered two and it was too much) - the veal ossobuco was very well seasoned and the saffron risotto is rich and creamy (very shareable for two people) - the fettuccine sea and land was packed with protein and perfectly done (again shared between two people is best) - the linguine of the sea in cream sauce was topped with a load of seafood and perfect as well (sharing would be ideal) Overall, a great place to have a long night of enjoying food and company, but the food is heavy and oily. Share basically everything with another person or just take the leftovers home to enjoy. Will be back for the calamari and chowder again as well as trying their pizza. Great go-to option for all occasions.
