Today we decided to try a new sushi restaurant we went to Hugo's. I have been seeing a lot of things about this place and I wanted to give it a try. It's a family owned operation which is pretty awesome to see. The restaurant had a good atmosphere. The waitress was amazing and super nice. I started off with a baked green muscles that had a little kick to it but nothing crazy the spicy mayo with the green onions was really good. I feel like it's hard to find bakery out here and this place was a spot to have it. The waitress gave us a complementary cucumber salad. It was very nice refreshing and sweet. I ordered two rolls and then she said it was buy two get one free so I got three. I got a Sunset. roll a Toro roll and then a king roll which I was told was the most popular. My wife got the lemon chicken with fried rice. and then of course, my son got chicken and fries, which was Dino nuggets. The rules are pretty good. My only complaint was there very small kind of gave me a feel that it would be like an all you can eat with the size but still wasn't bad. My wife liked her lemon chicken, but the sauce was a little thick she said all in all is a great meal.

Me and the midget felt like sushi. We were both having a rough week, and thought sushi was a great idea for a pick me up. If you have love food, in a healthy way, you know that sometimes good food can serve as a little pick me up. Well....wrong place to choose. It actually put us in a worse mood. Love the decor, the staff was adequate. Well the food was just a no. We started with calamari, chicken yakitori, and soft shell crab. The calamari was so thickly breaded, with no seasoning, and overcooked, that unless you knew you were ordering calamari you would have thought they were flavorless onion rings. The soft shell crab was the same thing. No seasoning and the crab tasted off. In the best restaurants that cook these items the breading is light and lets the ingredients shine through. They aren't fried and breaded to oblivion. The yakitori at least used the right cut of meat, but it felt more like a skewer with some weird sauce. Not traditional at all. My son order the Godzilla roll, and I decided to order bulgogi because honestly I got scared. When my son said his sushi was just a little better than heb, that's a problem. Here is the deal with sushi. It's driven by the quality of your ingredients. We mostly tasted cream cheese. The bulgogi was ok. Not great, but not bad. Overall we will not be coming back. Not cheap either, but if the food was better may not have been such a big deal. Will not be back.

San Antonio has a huge amount of sushi places, which makes it difficult to choose. This was my first time eating at Hugo's and I really enjoyed my meal. The place is clean and sparsely decorate. Service is good and food came out in a timely manner. I ordered two rolls to share and a cucumber salad. Portions were perfect for sharing and food was delicious. Prices were equivalent to other sushi places, so not cheap, yet food was well prepared. Hugo's was a good place to enjoy sushi.

Hugo's Sushi and Asian Cuisine might not grab your attention from the outside, but step in, and you'll find a cozy, inviting, and modern atmosphere. I visited during the lunch special and tried the sushi sampler, which included one roll and three pieces of nigiri. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and extremely satisfying. We also had the sesame chicken with fried rice, an egg roll, and miso soup. While enjoyable, it wasn't particularly memorable. The service, however, was a highlight--our server was friendly and even humored my friend's endless dad jokes. While Hugo's wouldn't be my absolute first choice for sushi, it's definitely a spot I'd visit again. Solid option for a relaxed and enjoyable meal!

The ambiance here is very relaxing and service is alway great. They offer sushi and sashimi. I had a poke bowl and it was delicious! Plenty of different rolls and other entrees if you are not a fan of sushi. My husband likes the Mongolian beef! Diamond poke bowl was very tasty!

Shirt review: Yes I would recommend this place, the gyozas were good, the egg rolls were tasty, and the sushi was very good. Food - the food was very good, I ordered the Texas Heat Roll and Tempura Roll. Also ordered the Gyoza and Egg Rolls for appetizers. Eel sauce wasn't the best, but I do recommend this sweet red sauce they serve with the enrolls. All I can say is that I will be back and you should visit. Service - the service was really good, very attentive and good customer service. Ambiance - the restaurant was very clean and the environment was very casual, the music and tv's in background are low enough to where you can have a conversation with someone. Very nice ambiance and layout of the restaurant.

Hugo's is located in small shopping strip. At. A glance, it doesn't look like a sushi restaurant. They offer sushi, poke and Japanese entrees. Some sushi rolls are traditional, but some are unique to them. I had the king roll, which was a typical sushi roll. My friend had a fried roll, the Texas heat. We both enjoyed our rolls. They have happy hour M-F 3-6pm. Our waiter was great. He was fast and friendly. Parking is available on site, but shared with the other businesses.

Saw this place on Instagram and wanted to check it out. Super glad I did. It was very fresh tasting. So delicious. A huge variety to choose from which I love bc I want to be able to come back. Service was exceptional - speedy and friendly. Finally the atmosphere was very clean and moderate. I appreciate that they had lower lighting (not the abrasive fluorescent light) but not so low it felt like I am eating in the dark. I don't have a single bad thing to say about Hugo's. Really wasn't expecting this. Food was excellent. Service was excellent. Price was completely reasonable for the amount and quantity of sushi recurved. Visited this place looking for a good sushi restaurant and found this place on Yelp. It has limited reviews but good reviews so I decided to be my own judge and give it a try and I'm glad I did. The sushi was fresh and the rolls were good. I got the Strawberry roll and the RED roll. I was a bit surprised with the great presentation on the rolls and the quality since this looked like a little small mom and pop restaurant that is barely starting out. Nonetheless the service was excellent, the rolls were good and tásty and the fresh ingredients were great. I will definitely be back to visit this place. If you are in the area give this place a try. It was very good and I would definitely recommend. I would have to say if anything the price on the rolls were a little higher than other places but might because of the quality of the fish. read more

Went here for my birthday dinner and selected this place based on the reviews. The waiter was on point and it's a nice little place. The sushi was good, my oldest ordered Ramen and he liked it, kids chicken nuggets my youngest didn't care for, but our 11 yr old loved the General Tao chicken with fried rice. read more

Food is descent. A little on the high side compared to other places. Went today for Happy hour Menu and is not served on holidays. Did not have it on the menu before or on website. I decided to try a new sushi place for lunch with a friend and came across Hugo's based on its ratings. Customer service was good, the gentleman helping us was kind and patient as we took our time to order. I had gyoza to start which were ok. My friend had the spicy edamame which were good. I also ordered the spider roll and the spurs roll. Both rolls were good, great flavor & portions. There was a generous selection for sushi, also poke bowls and even plates. The prices were pretty fair and average to other sushi restaurants. The area is a little sketchy but other than that I enjoyed my experience here. read more

Tried this place for the first time this evening. Service was fantastic. Very attentive and polite. We were looking for a new sushi stop close to home. We first had fried calamari as an appetizer. It was only average and the dipping sauce was virtually tasteless. My son and daughter-in-law got the tempura roll and the rainbow roll with tempura ice cream to share for dessert. Both rolls looked beautiful and the kids said they were good. I went with the Korean dish Bibimbap. This was a little less authentic than when I've had it at a couple of other restaurants in San Antonio, but it was served good and hot and was fresh. It had more meat than I'm used too in bibimbap and though different it was quite good. My grandson devoured the only kids menu item--chicken nuggets and fries. I would go back here again. read more

After reading all the really good reviews I was disappointed to say the least. I ordered the Godzilla Roll and it just taste like mush no flavor and the shrimp in the fried rice was sooo over cooked; the overall flavor of the fried rice was really good. Sushi is good but this is not where you want to go if you want anything close to authentic or what Americans would consider traditional Japanese restaurant dining. There were a few things I'm used to ordering at sushi restaurants that they did not have on the menu. The service was decent, I had to ask for a refill 10 minutes after I needed one... that's my one pet peeve. I honestly doubt I would come back because it won't come up in my mind again when I think about Japanese food read more

Normally this is a 5-star visit. But on this trip I might have possibly had a new unseasoned waiter. When he came up initially.. he greeted me but didn't give his name. When I asked for a recommendation on a plentiful roll, he replied with "I don't eat sushi rolls, but you should try a California roll". Wasn't very attentive throughout my meal, then after 15 mins of waiting for my bill.. I had to walk up to the hostess to pay. The food as always was on point and delicious! They don't do lunch specials to go. Difficult for people who leave the office to have a sit down restaurant during lunch. Rolls don't come with soup or salad Rolls are not packed tightly. Rice doesn't haven't consistency of sushi rice. read more

Excellent sushi and service at this gem of a restaurant in this strip mall. We had the king roll and the red dragon roll in the picture. Also not pictured was the general tsos chicken and a bottle of peach sake. Finally we had fried tempura ice cream. Our bill was $65 before tip. Not bad for drinks, meals, and dessert. Ordered ramen, got chicken noodle soup with zucchini and broccoli. It was good, but I wanted Japanese ramen, not mexican-American calabacita chicken soup. Took 30 minutes to prepare my food. I could have microwaved it in 3 minutes. The chicken in the soup appears to be prepackaged chicken slices. The chicken broth doesn't taste like anything special and could be a prepackaged broth. Good place for people who hate Japanese food, but have friends who want sushi. read more

Came here to try something different. Everything lacked flavor. I told my server I didn't like my meal and asked to switch it and he said no and offered nothing to accommodate my meal. The chicken had a weird texture and nothing had any seasoning. I would not recommend this place. read more

LOVE this place! They never disappoint. The only two negative feedbacks I have are the lemonade could taste better, and they ran out of Dr Pepper and Coke. Besides that their food was delicious. I had the heart attack roll which was so so good! Their deep fried soft shell crab was delicious. My boyfriend loved his food. If this place was closer to me I would be there every week. read more

Ordered a couple rolls(a rainbow roll and a salmon maki roll) and a miso soup to go. The miso soup was good, but the sushi rolls were terrible. Sushi rice was undercooked. Not enough fish. More rice than fish and just a terrible experience. Will definitely not go back again. Hostess was rude and not very helpful. The restaurant was busy and full of people which was very surprising considering how awful the sushi is. read more

The truffle creamy miso soup was warm & comforting with just the right amount of depth and the Asian pear cucumber salad was perfect to cleanse the palate after the soup. The Hawaiian ono was another standout that absolutely delivered. That cilantro oil and the yuzu dance together well with the soft & silky ono. I also really enjoyed the scallop crudo, it also has cilantro oil but this time with ponzu foam. This combination was so good that I absolutely had no shame sipping the married liquid components on the plate between each bite of scallop. Lastly, the wagyu mochi gnocchi is unreal--rich, melt in your mouth mochi gnocchi, savory shrimp and tender wagyu, and this velvety sauce that's semi addicting. This surf-and-turf style dish with seafood and wagyu is where Yozora really flexes; every bite felt balanced, indulgent, and beautifully plated. (This particular evening the sauce on the mochi gnocchi was a touch spicier for me than the first time I visited but I enjoyed every last bite nonetheless). I went a little ham and didn't have room for dessert this time unfortunately. Next time Huge shoutout to my server Annabelle, who made the entire night seamless. My water never even got close to empty, her recommendations were spot on, and she somehow balanced taking care of the bar while still making her tables feel attended to. The rest of the staff even tag teamed service throughout the dining room which I always enjoy seeing. It says a lot about how well the staff and overall concept works together there.
