I haven't had my eyes checked since I was a little kid. Now that we have vision insurance, my husband and I decided we both should go. This was one of the closest places that took our insurance and they were able to get us new patient appointments. We had a great experience. The staff were very friendly and the Dr was great. I've never been a fan of going to an optometrist, especially the pupil dilation, so my mind was blown that Dr. Harbeck dilated my pupils simply by turning off the lights. It was a small and comfortable office, where the digital eye chart displayed pretty pictures when not showing the chart, with easy parking, and a stocked cooler. All the staff were extremely pleasant, and they had a nice selection of frames to choose from, at various levels. I learned quite a bit of how the pupil increases, as we age, so that the nice crisp, infinite focus, starts to get more and more blurry. In addition, the muscles in the eye weaken, so it gets hard and hard to focus for extended periods of time. They have become my new opticians. read more

I started going to Hughes by the recommendation of a coworker. This was three years ago and I will continue to return to Hughes for my eye needs. The staff (all of them) are very friendly, knowledgeable, and honest. I always have a hard time picking out glasses, even with my boyfriend there to help. I will pick a few that I like and the girls up front will help me decide from the ones I pick. If something doesn't look good, they will tell you. They are not trying to just sell you something, and that deserves stars alone. I had an issue with a pair of glasses where something decorative fell off. They were jot able to repair it and all of the ones they received from the manufacturer had the same defect. They let me swap the pair out for another of similar price. Hughes has a large supply of designer frames (Gucci, Prada, Tiffany & Co, Tom Ford, etc). They have a limited supply of insurance covered frames, so if that's what you are looking for, I suggest you find another place covered by your insurance (this is where they lost a star). With one pair of glasses and 6 months of contacts, I leave there paying out of pocket a minimum of $300 (due to the frames I choose). I love Hughes and and the experience I have there. I will continue to return as long as my pocket allows me to. read more

I've been a customer of Hughes Opticians for many years. I have always found them to be very amiable and professional, until now. Two years ago I purchased high end glasses there. Last week the frame broke. I called in and was told that the template arm was no longer covered by warranty ( of course, isn't how that always happens) but that the two arms could be replaced for $80. The next day I called and was told the price was now $170. The original cost was over $800 two years ago. Then I spoke to the manager and was told $120 and that's the best the factory rep would do. My disappointment is based on the fact that my loyalty to a local business was misplaced. I expected that loyalty to be a two way street. It was one way with a toll of $120. When one purchases a high end frame I would expect that both the retailer (Hughes) and the manufacture would stand behind their product. Clearly, they would not. BUYER BEWARE ..... Wrote much too long of a review before, I wrote it when was disappointed. Still am. I ordered specialty frames. Had a really through exam, the dr. was very nice and extremely knowledgeable. Problem was when I needed the lenses drilled, did it in the wrong place and took another month to get them right. I wanted, did make it a point to mention I would like titanium's. The frame I asked for, wasn't in stock. They did have something close, but was not explained to me they weren't titanium. Bummer. Update: Glass need repair: pieces keep popping out of lens holes and allergic to the metal. See if they could trim cables ends and cap them.q Such a unique item, nobody can or would attempt to fix them. Will contact Hughes to see if they would repair. read more

In this day and age, it is increasingly rare that one finds caring, personalized service. At Hughes Optical this is not at all rare, it is the norm. From the moment you walk in, through the eye exam, frame selection, and final adjustments, you are greeted with friendly, capable service. Insurance is handled deftly and all your questions are addressed and needs are met. I have purchased glasses in other places but have never enjoyed such service. When my frames became unadjustable after nearly a year, they suggested a replacement and obtained it quickly at no cost to me. We are fortunate to have this gem for our vision needs. Stopped at Hughes to price glasses( NONE of the frames are priced, you have to ask). I got a price on frames. I went back to order the glasses, but was given a substantially different price. I questioned the price and was told I pay more, because I have a vision plan. Aubrey told me that it is to help people that do not have insurance. So, after they raised the price of my glasses and took off my vision plan allotment, I pay the same price as somebody that doesn't have insurance. Dr. Kerry Harbeck conducted my exam and immediately suggested a better brand/type of contacts. Hughes is bar none, the best opticians in Albany. and probably the state. I had gone to them previously but strayed this year at my mothers request and went to a horrible awful, no good, eye doctor. I went into Hughes initially to pick up a receipt for flex spending, and ended up telling Michelle about what had happened. She was so sympathetic and sweet and encouraged me to file a complaint with my insurance company, she even got on the phone with my insurance! Fast forward a few weeks and my insurance denied my claim for a new eye appointment. I had kept in touch with Hughes and let Aubrey know it had been denied, and i asked what the flat rate was cause i would just pay out of pocket to go to them. Aubrey gave me an incredible discount and made my appointment. The doctor, I don't recall his name at the moment, was so nice and friendly! He tried fixed my prescription and sent me on my way with more than enough sample contacts, with an appointment to recheck the following week.The following week i had expressed my concerns with the prescription not being strong enough and he assured me I had been way over corrected and needed to come down but my eyes weren't ready so he brought me up and my vision is now fabulous. I went in to order my glasses and sure enough, they price match other glasses! Is there anything they don't do to make their customers happy? Oh, and I have an extra box of contacts from last year,and they're exchanging them! I love Hughes, I will be a customer as long as I live in the area. I knew what I wanted but wasn't sure was going to find, as not many people like big and funky; but the sales people instantly got exactly what i was looking for and the ones they brought out were so spectacular I ended up having the hardest time choosing. They even asked if I wanted to think about it and call back the following Monday. They were SO friendly, so attentive, and let me know why they liked some and not others so I never felt like I was being "sold" something that really didn't look good (and if I was, then they are also great actors). In the end, I got two pairs, with progressive lens and transition; so forget any home improvements this spring (only mildly joking, but the cost of progressives isn't the store's fault). Just picked them up earlier this week and am absolutely thrilled. I really wasn't looking forward to getting glasses, had put off for as long as I could; but they made the experience so pleasant, I will definitely use them and/or recommend them again. Oh yes, the doctor too (and I've been to many) made me completely comfortable, i didn't feel rushed or stupid (like I normally do). He even said my sight was still legal driving but that I would definitely notice a difference. And because I have started to notice a harder time driving at night, that difference means a lot. I went to Hughes for many years. I thought that paying premium prices would include service if something went wrong. In my experience, that did not happen. I went in with lenses with a deteriorating glare coating and left with lenses so badly scorched that they need to be trashed. Their attitude was a cavalier 'oh well', they needed to be replaced soon anyway. No responsibility on their part and don't hold your breath waiting for a return phone call. read more

Wonderful service! I'm very particular about my doctors and my eyeglass frames. I am so happy I found this place! The doctor explained everything to me and we had a real discussion about my vision and preference on strength of lenses (In in between prescriptions). The ladies up front were amazing too, quickly found my insurance in their system since I originally just popped in to see their frames and didn't have my insurance card. They also helped me work through the benefits of using each of my insurances - I ended up getting new glasses with one insurance and just replacement lenses through my other. I love my outrageously stylish lenses and prescription. If you have Davis vision don't limit your options by thinking you can only go to Empire Vision. Go to Hughes instead!!! read more

DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE. "Family own and operated" apparently means nothing to these people. My great uncle (for whatever reason) goes to this location for exams. (Which they make him pay out of pocket even though he has insurance and they claim they take it??) Well, the glasses were too expensive for him to pay on his own even though he has insurance. So, we decided to take his Rx else where. Upon arriving to another facility they discovered the idiots running Hughes Opticians gave him the wrong Rx! When the pleasant people at the other establishment (I'm leaving the name out on purpose) called to get this corrected the woman who answered the phone basically told them to go screw off. So, I had to take matters into my own hands and drive ALL THE WAY back to their location. Only to be given the same attitude. If this is how your family acts, I want no part of it. I suggest you find any where else to go. If I could've given it 1/2 a star or 1/4 of a star I would have. read more
