I stop here every time I travel. I can't understand why they always try to hide their value menu. You shouldn't have to constantly ask for it. Come on owners get your together. They advertise the crap out it. Also get some more help. Way too slow. Even for down south!

8/2021 We only dropped by while traveling. Never been in a Huddle House before. This stop certainly will encourage us to stay next time and seek out other Huddle House's while traveling. Payton was amazing! She was patient with us, being rookies, and helped us through things. We had a semi complicated to go order but she got us through it and fixed everything up. Payton smiled a lot and was quite pleasant and encouraging. She made it a bright stop on our trip! The food was good. Loved the Onion Rings and Tater Tots! The atmosphere was fun. Loved reading the signs. And loved the backs of the staff T-shirts. I posted a few of them here.

I would like to start by saying that I don't know that I have ever gone to a restaurant and left wanting to write a negative review before. I typically give people the benefit of the doubt and try to understand that no one Is perfect, sometimes things don't go as planned, etc. With that being said, I do want to say that our very young waitress did the very best she could and was apologetic and very sweet. The restaurant was not overly busy and had several empty tables. We ordered and after not receiving our food at the 55 min mark, I asked our waitress if she could check on it for us, as we were traveling and wanting to get back on the road soon. She apologized and said that it really should not be taking this long. She went to check on it and came back and told us it would be out in five minutes. We waited another 30 minutes and still no food. The entire time we sat there, we listened to the older man who was clearly frustrated and the only cook, yelling and talking down to the other staff. He also did not wear a mask or gloves the entire time he was cooking and we were there 1 1/2 hours total. I got up to use the restroom and we decided that if the food wasn't there when I returned, we were leaving. On the way to the restroom, I passed by the kitchen and that's when I knew we were leaving. It was completely disgusting with open food and containers sitting out everywhere and the refrigerator doors were just wide open with unsealed food in them. We told our waitress we were leaving at that point and walked out. We witnessed several others get frustrated and walk out as well while we were there. If you are looking for a quick meal in a clean place, this restaurant is not for you!

Way over priced for what they serve. Same things as Waffle House, but 3x as much. Save your money and go a few more exits to a WH.

I was on a road trip up from Florida to Wisconsin with a friend. We were going through Springfield, Illinois, so we could visit the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum & Library. So that's how I ended up in this neck of the woods. Needed a spot for dinner and this popped up as an option and sure glad it did. My friend & I both opted for the Fried Chicken dinner and this place makes the best fried chicken I've had in decades! OMGOSH! The meat was fully cooked, but still so incredibly juicy. The crispy skin and coating was unreal, it was so good - it was truly "finger-lick in' good". While I'm borrowing that old slogan, The Ariston Cafe's fried chicken is like the fried chicken ideal of perfection. They have a classic salad bar and that hit the spot, especially on a road trip where you're not often getting enough veggies. I'm writing this review some weeks later after getting back home. If the place had been average, I wouldn't bother, but when a reminder to do a review popped up, I had to do this as the waitresses and cooks deserve it, as do the owners & all the staff. Waitresses were all nice as could be and helpful. It's like walking back in time when you go inside, and it reminded me of great restaurants in the area I grew up in. If I make it back up that way again, I'll plan my travels to include another stop in at The Artisan.

Felt that the boneless wings could use more buffalo sauce and noted the interesting breading as used on the fried chicken. The salmon was decent but the highlight was the red-skinned potatoes with amazing flavor but the rice was a little dry. Decided to go for the pot roast sandwich and it was very tasty but wish it had an Au Jus to dip it in. Overall would gladly go back just because how kind the staff were and for how professional the situation was handled (which with the response of such can be an instant indicator as to the prospects of returning).

Waited over 15 min for drinks and menus and than 15 more min before she even came back to get our order an then rudely asked if we was gonna order food or not. Ordered food and it came out fairly quickly but food was not made right, asked for the shredded cheese to be put on top of the nachos not on the bottom. When asked waitress Brenda for extra shredded cheese to put on top . She said it on there and I told her when I ordered it was to be on top and she got mad went to the kitchen window and told the cook " and said She wants extra cheese cook states he put it in there and brenda states she don't need it just look at her" and cook gave her the bowl of shredded cheese she brought it back and shoved it at me . she was to busy with flirting with other customers to even come ask us if we needed refills and checking on us. She then removed my other guess plate before he had time to answer if he wanted a box for his left over chicken and fries. The server that checked us out was super nice and pleasant to deal with . Highly recommend to request another server if you get Brenda .

They also have daily specials to augment their regular menu or to offer a lower price on thier regular fare The service is usually good but there is a turnover in staff mainly because waitressing is not considered as a full time job for most people But it is not crowded so two waitresses can usually handle the amount of people there. The kids could sometimes be seen working there and were popular and well liked in the community. The furniture blends seemlessly into the theme of the menu or some such. There are other times when you are content to walk into a clean, simple space where the decor has been put together over the years by many different people, with different quirks and fancies. The furniture is functional, might not even all match...all good. Route 138 Cafe is that second kind of place. The name alone, is so plain sense Midwest, practical. It not some whimsical thought excercise like Nutmeg Hutch or some such. There are no fancy uniforms, the staff might have on T-shirts from the restaurant. We have had no issues with any of the staff, they have been nothing but pleasant, effective and welcoming. We have been here a few times now since moving to the area, this was the first time for lunch. I had a breaded pork tenderloin sandwich with seasoned fries, my wife got a BLT with same. Do splurge for the "special" fries vs. the standard crinkle cut. Somehow crinkle cut fries take me back to elementary school, and no matter how hot and great they may be in this present time, they take me back to luke warm unsalted punishment on a plastic tray. There is nothing fancy about anything I have eaten here. It's not perfect, what is- it is also obviously put together with care. That goes a long way. I have had beautiful, expensive meals and left hungry and full of regret. We left Saturday afternoon feeling full, comfortable and starting to fit in to our "fly-over" retirement.

As someone with experience managing bars and restaurants all over St. Louis, the fault here lies with the owners or management. The staff were not set up for success. There should absolutely be a manager on duty. In fact, it's the law - in illinois you must have certified food protection manager on sight at all times. Not having a second cook on duty sounds like ownership trying to cheap out on overhead. The food was ok. Not bad, and not good. I'm not sure how this place passed a health inspection.
